An Analysis of the Root of the Party’s Self-Revolutionary Spirit in Fine Traditional Chinese Culture
Xi Jinping has pointed out: “Fine traditional Chinese culture is the cultural root of the Chinese nation; the ideological concepts, humanistic spirit, and moral norms it contains are not only the core of our Chinese thought and spirit but also of great value for solving human problems.” The Communist Party of China is a faithful inheritor and promoter of fine traditional Chinese culture. It has always focused on drawing wisdom for governing the country and managing affairs from traditional culture, and it is also adept at applying the ideological concepts, humanistic spirit, and moral norms of traditional culture to its own construction. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit is a vivid embodiment and important achievement of the “Second Integration” [1]1 The “Second Integration” refers to the integration of the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s fine traditional culture, a concept formally proposed by Xi Jinping. in the field of Party building. An in-depth study of the compatibility between the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit and fine traditional Chinese culture, and an exploration of the root significance of fine traditional Chinese culture for the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit, have important theoretical and practical significance for thoroughly studying and implementing Xi Jinping’s important thought on the Party’s self-revolution and advancing the great practice of comprehensive and strict governance of the Party in the New Era.
I. The “Historical Cycle,” the Party’s Self-Revolutionary Spirit, and the Chinese Nation’s Vigilance in Times of Peace
The “historical cycle” refers to the historical phenomenon in dynastic changes where a regime “rises abruptly and falls abruptly.” [2]2 This phrase originates from the Zuo Zhuan, describing the rapid rise and fall of a regime. In July 1945, Huang Yanpei and other social democratic personages visited Yan’an. He posed to Mao Zedong the question of how the Communist Party of China could break out of the “historical cycle.” Mao Zedong gave the answer of “a new path of democracy.” [3]3 Huang Yanpei (1878–1965) was a Chinese educator and political figure. His question to Mao Zedong in 1945 is known as the “Huang Yanpei Question” or the “historical cycle question.” The Communist Party of China has always regarded breaking out of the “historical cycle” as a historic issue concerning the governance of the Party and the country, continuously exploring and seeking answers. In November 2021, Xi Jinping pointed out in his speech at the Second Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC: “Through a century of struggle, especially the new practice since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, our Party has given a second answer, and that is self-revolution.” In October 2022, Xi Jinping further pointed out in his summary of the great achievements of the New Era over the past decade in the report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC: “Through unremitting efforts, the Party has found self-revolution as the second answer to breaking out of the historical cycle of rise and fall.” Through sustained reflection and unremitting exploration of the major issue of the “historical cycle,” our Party has proposed two answers: the new path of democracy and self-revolution. This fully embodies the strong sense of vigilance of the Communist Party of China. “Be vigilant in times of peace; vigilance leads to preparedness, and preparedness ensures safety.” (Zuo Zhuan, Duke Xiang, 11th Year) [4]4 The Zuo Zhuan is a Chinese historical text covering the Spring and Autumn period. The quote is attributed to the statesman Wei Jiang. The sense of vigilance in times of peace is an important spiritual quality of the Chinese nation and a significant component of traditional Chinese humanistic spirit. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit is deeply rooted in the strong sense of vigilance of the Chinese nation.
First, “Do not forget danger in times of safety, do not forget ruin in times of survival, do not forget chaos in times of order” (Zhou Yi, Xici II). [5]5 The Zhou Yi (I Ching) is an ancient Chinese divination text and classic. The Communist Party of China has always maintained a sense of vigilance throughout its century-plus struggle. A sense of vigilance is an important concept of the Chinese nation. If an individual lacks a sense of vigilance, they will lose their subjectivity. Similarly, if a country or nation lacks a sense of vigilance, it will also lose its subjectivity. Not forgetting danger in times of safety, not forgetting ruin in times of survival, and not forgetting chaos in times of order—this is a clear manifestation of the Chinese nation’s sense of vigilance. Xu Fuguan pointed out: “The sense of vigilance is the expression of the human spirit beginning to directly assume responsibility for things, that is, the expression of the spirit beginning to have human self-awareness.” [6]6 Xu Fuguan (1903–1982) was a Chinese historian and philosopher. The Chinese Communists are the epitome of the Chinese national spirit and character. Looking at their great journey of leading the Chinese people to strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, it can be seen that the Chinese nation’s sense of vigilance has merged with the Communist Party of China’s century-plus history of struggle. At the symposium commemorating the 120th anniversary of Comrade Mao Zedong’s birth, Xi Jinping, focusing on the major proposition that “the key to realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation lies in the Party,” emphasized the need to “remember the ancient adage ‘thrive in adversity, perish in comfort,’ and earnestly address the historic issue of ‘rising abruptly and falling abruptly.’” [7]7 The phrase “thrive in adversity, perish in comfort” is from Mencius. The sense of vigilance, as the Party’s subjective self-awareness and clear consciousness in contemplating and answering the question of the “historical cycle,” has become an excellent quality and unique advantage formed by the Communist Party of China over a century of forging. “Our Party was born amidst internal and external troubles, grew up amidst hardships and setbacks, and strengthened itself amidst overcoming risks and challenges, always maintaining a strong sense of vigilance and risk awareness.” The Communist Party of China answers and resolves the issue of the “historical cycle” with “self-revolution,” advances self-revolution with sober determination, and promotes social revolution through self-revolution, demonstrating a strong sense of vigilance.
Second, “Deal with things before they happen; bring order before chaos arises” (Dao De Jing, Chapter 64). [8]8 The Dao De Jing is a foundational text of Daoism attributed to Laozi. The Communist Party of China has always maintained a bottom-line thinking of self-alertness throughout its century-plus struggle. “The superior man is constantly diligent and, as if in danger, cautious and reflective, thus free from blame.” (Zhou Yi, Qian Hexagram) [9]9 The Qian Hexagram is the first hexagram in the I Ching. Maintaining diligence without slackness, being cautious and introspective, allows one to calmly cope even when facing danger. Whether a party, a country, or a nation possesses a sense of self-alertness is an important indicator of its maturity. Xi Jinping pointed out at the ceremony marking the centenary of the Communist Party of China: “We must use history to reflect on the present and look into the future.” Maintaining reverence for history is not only a manifestation of our Party’s self-alertness and sense of vigilance regarding its own future and destiny but also a summary of the successful experience of our Party’s century-plus struggle. Correctly handling the relationship between history, reality, and the future, and grasping the initiative to “make the first move,” are important contents of our Party’s reflection on and answer to the issue of the “historical cycle.” Since its founding, whenever the Communist Party of China has faced life-or-death tests, it has been able to turn danger into safety and continue to advance. The winning formula is its distinct bottom-line thinking and the self-alertness consciousness contained within it. So-called bottom-line thinking means preparing for the worst while striving for the best, as Xi Jinping pointed out: “Achieve ‘dealing with things before they happen, bringing order before chaos arises,’ so that our Party will forever remain invincible.” Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has proposed strengthening the Party’s own construction through the Party’s self-revolution and elevated self-revolution to the strategic height of the “second answer” for our Party to break out of the historical cycle. This reflects the Communist Party of China’s strong sense of self-alertness and bottom-line thinking.
Finally, “Preparing for unforeseen events is the constant way of governing a country” (Zhenguan Zhengyao, Volume 2, Direct Remonstrance). [10]10 The Zhenguan Zhengyao is a Tang dynasty text recording the governance of Emperor Taizong. The Communist Party of China has always focused on enhancing its sense of vigilance through risk prevention throughout its century-plus struggle. Mozi believed: “Strength leads to order, weakness leads to chaos; strength leads to peace, weakness leads to danger; therefore, one dare not be negligent.” (Mozi, Feiming III) [11]11 Mozi (c. 470–391 BCE) was a Chinese philosopher and founder of Mohism. Preparing for unforeseen events is the constant way of governing a country; making advance preparations for possible unexpected risks is basic common sense in state governance. With the accelerated evolution of changes unseen in a century, we are in the midst of world changes, epochal changes, and historical changes where various risks are superimposed and intensifying. Crises and risks give rise to a sense of vigilance. The Communist Party of China, in responding to the “three changes,” possesses the courage and wisdom to turn crises into opportunities and foster new opportunities, enabling it to act boldly and achieve success in complex domestic and international situations. Enhancing risk awareness is a clear manifestation of the Party’s adherence to a sense of vigilance and advancement of self-revolution in the New Era. Adhering to a strong risk awareness in contemplating and responding to the issue of the “historical cycle” reflects the high degree of compatibility between the Communist Party of China’s self-revolutionary spirit and the Chinese nation’s sense of vigilance. Xi Jinping pointed out: “Facing a rapidly changing world and China, if we stick to old ways, become rigid in thinking, lack the courage for theoretical innovation, and cannot scientifically answer the questions of China, the world, the people, and the times, not only will the cause of the Party and the country be unable to move forward, but Marxism will also lose its vitality and persuasiveness.” [12]12 The “four questions” are a formulation by Xi Jinping referring to the questions of China, the world, the people, and The “four questions” are a new interpretation and new application of “preparing for unforeseen events is the constant way of governing a country” in the New Era. They are also the way to strengthen the country and the Party in the New Era, jointly constituting an important part of the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit.
II. The Consciousness of Facing Problems, the “Unique Challenges of a Large Party,” and the Chinese Nation’s Moral Character of Prudence and Self-Reflection
As the world’s largest Marxist ruling party, the Communist Party of China is unique and unprecedented in both its organizational scale and the number of its Party members. Since its founding, the Party has taken the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as its unswerving goal of struggle. This grand vision guides Chinese Communists to forge ahead and strive unremittingly. The Communist Party of China is a political party with significant international influence. Xi Jinping pointed out: “Our Party is the largest political party in the world. Being large means it must have the bearing befitting its size, and being large also brings its own difficulties.” [13]13 The “six issues of how to always” (六个如何始终) refers to six challenges facing a large Marxist ruling party: how to always maintain the original aspiration and founding mission, how to always unify thinking, will, and action, how to always possess the ability to lead and govern, how to always maintain the vitality of the Party, how to always overcome risks and challenges, and how to always remain clean and honest. This kind of self-judgment and self-awareness embodies and reflects the moral character of prudence and self-examination of the Chinese nation. “The superior man is cautious about what he does not see, and fearful about what he does not hear. There is nothing more visible than what is hidden, and nothing more manifest than what is subtle; therefore the superior man is watchful over himself when alone.” (The Book of Rites, “The Doctrine of the Mean”) In fine traditional Chinese culture, “being watchful over oneself when alone” is a kind of moral self-discipline and ideological self-awareness, as well as a method of self-reflection and self-improvement in life cultivation. “What the superior man does must be cautious when he is alone. For the petty man, a moment of leisure becomes the breeding ground for all evils, but the superior man is good at turning back to himself.” Compared with the inner striving of “self-examination,” “being watchful over oneself when alone” highlights the consciousness of behavior, not only giving full play to the moral subjectivity of the person but also unifying moral self-examination with rational practice, with the ultimate goal being the coordination of self-pursuit and self-realization. Confucius’s “self-accusation,” Zengzi’s “three daily examinations,” Mencius’s “seeking the cause in oneself,” and Zhu Xi’s “preserving the mind and examining the self” all reflect the character of prudence and self-examination of ancient sages. As a major world party, our Party not only needs the supervision of the people but also needs to achieve self-strengthening through self-discipline and self-examination, bravely facing its own problems, and forging itself with the spirit of self-revolution. In the report to the 20th National Congress of the
“Looking into a bright mirror, blemishes and flaws do not linger on the body” (Wang Can’s Collection: Imitating Lianzhu [13]13 The “six issues of how to always” (六个如何始终) refers to six challenges facing a large Marxist ruling party: how to always maintain the original aspiration and founding mission, how to always unify thinking, will, and action, how to always possess the ability to lead and govern, how to always maintain the vitality of the Party, how to always overcome risks and challenges, and how to always remain clean and honest.), making good use of the weapon of criticism and self-criticism to maintain the health of the Party’s organism. Facing one’s own problems squarely, and achieving the effect of setting an example for subordinates through self-moral improvement and rectification of one’s own conduct, was regarded in ancient China as a quality of the junzi (exemplary person). In the view of Chinese Communists in the New Era, possessing the self-awareness to face problems squarely is the essential meaning of daring to engage in self-revolution and strengthening one’s own building. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit focuses on solving the Party’s own problems and the difficulties in national development, continuously exploring and innovating mechanisms for problem-solving, adhering to a problem-oriented approach, and promoting the organic integration of Party building with the governance of the state. Criticism and self-criticism are our Party’s fine tradition, providing us with a scientific methodology for discovering our own shortcomings and facing our own problems squarely. Xi Jinping pointed out: “Criticism and self-criticism must be made the
“In dealing with others, seek not perfection; in examining oneself, fear lest one fall short” (The Book of Documents, “Instructions of Yi”) — strengthening self-cultivation and self-discipline, being cautious when alone and attentive to small matters, forever preserving the political本色 of Communists. Chinese Communists possess the character of “being cautious when alone and engaging in self-reflection,” adhering to the principle of strict self-discipline, just as Xi Jinping pointed out at the democratic life meeting of the Political Bureau of the 19th Central Committee: “Comrades of the Political Bureau must cultivate themselves and discipline themselves, be cautious to the end, always respect themselves, examine themselves, warn themselves, and encourage themselves, achieving caution when alone, caution at the start, caution in small matters, and caution in friendships.” Over more than a century of struggle, the Communist Party of China has carried forward and developed the character of “being cautious when alone and engaging in self-reflection.” Liu Shaoqi pointed out in On the Cultivation of Communists: “We Communists… in such study, reflection, and self-examination, eliminate all our incorrect ideological remnants, even the faintest sprouts that are unsuitable for the interests of communism.” Since the New Era, our Party has made inspection tours a strategic institutional arrangement for strengthening intra-Party supervision, adhering to the political orientation of inspection tours, giving full play to the role of inspection tours as a sharp weapon of the state and the Party, and through inspection tours internalizing Party discipline into norms that Party members use daily without conscious awareness, preserving the Party’s advanced nature and purity, and consolidating the political foundation for the Party’s long-term governance. The inspection tour system has laid a solid institutional foundation for solving the unique problems of a large party and resolving the “six issues of how to always,” [13]13 The “six issues of how to always” (六个如何始终) refers to six challenges facing a large Marxist ruling party: how to always maintain the original aspiration and founding mission, how to always unify thinking, will, and action, how to always possess the ability to lead and govern, how to always maintain the vitality of the Party, how to always overcome risks and challenges, and how to always remain clean and honest. reflecting the inheritance, promotion, and innovative development by Chinese Communists in the New Era of the Chinese nation’s character of “being cautious when alone and engaging in self-reflection.”
“Only by being able to correct faults is considered capable; not by being without faults is considered valuable” (Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government, “Tang Records”) — upholding truth, correcting errors, ensuring the Party’s enduring prosperity and continuous growth and development. Confucianism advocates that “men are not sages, who can be without faults?” — correctly understanding and facing one’s own shortcomings, taking discovering problems and correcting mistakes as an important part of life cultivation. Wang Yangming believed: “Do not regard being without faults as the height of sages, but regard correcting faults as the learning of sages” (Reply to Xu Chengzhi). Courage in correcting faults is a self-cultivation path consistently advocated by Confucianism. The essence of correcting faults is reflected in the individual’s comprehensive reflection, revision, and shaping of thoughts and behaviors, emphasizing the elevation and perfection of personality at the spiritual level, and focusing on the unity of words and deeds and not repeating mistakes at the behavioral level. For Communists, daring to face problems directly and being courageous in correcting errors is a compulsory course for strengthening Party spirit. Xi Jinping pointed out: “A Marxist political party… must ‘take mending faults as its intention, seeking faults as urgent, being able to correct faults as good, and being able to hear of one’s faults as wise.’” Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee has continuously carried out intra-Party centralized education campaigns of far-reaching significance, reflecting the high unity of the Communist Party of China in self-awareness in cognition and self-action in practice, laying a solid ideological foundation for the Communist Party of China to solve the unique problems of a large party and forever preserve the Party’s advanced nature and purity.
III. The Courage to Turn the Blade Inward, the “Four Selfs,” and the Chinese Nation’s Cultural Gene of Discarding the Old and Establishing the New
As a Marxist political party committed to the eternal cause of the Chinese nation, the Communist Party of China has maintained a high degree of self-examination and vigilance for over a century, tempering and enhancing its own governing capacity and leadership level with the spirit of driving a nail, and actively promoting self-purification, self-perfection, self-renovation, and self-improvement with the courage to turn the blade inward. This self-revolutionary spirit contains the cultural gene of the Chinese nation’s “discarding the old and establishing the new.” “Ge means to discard the old; ding means to take up the new” (The Book of Changes, “Miscellaneous Hexagrams”). [14]14 The Book of Changes (周易, Zhou Yi), a classical Chinese divination and philosophical text, is one of the foundational works of Chinese civilization. The “Miscellaneous Hexagrams” (杂卦, Za Gua) is one of its appendices, traditionally attributed to Confucius or his school. Discarding the old and establishing the new means breaking through to establish, pushing out the old to bring forth the new, and winning through the new. Xi Jinping pointed out: “The innovative nature of Chinese civilization fundamentally determines the enterprising spirit of the Chinese nation to uphold the right without clinging to the old, and to respect antiquity without restoring the ancient, and determines the fearless character of the Chinese nation in not fearing new challenges and being brave in accepting new things.” [15]15 Xi Jinping, speech at the symposium on cultural heritage, 2023. That the CPC has promoted earth-shaking changes in Chinese society and advanced self-revolution all benefit from this spiritual endowment of the Chinese nation to discard the old and establish the new. To advance the Party’s self-revolution, it is necessary to “always maintain the firm consciousness of turning the blade inward, to strengthen the bones and nourish the body, to expel toxins and sterilize, to remove disease and heal wounds, and to eliminate decay and regenerate the flesh.” [16]16 Xi Jinping, speech at the 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, 2023. Always maintaining the firm consciousness of turning the blade inward and actively promoting self-purification, self-perfection, self-renovation, and self-improvement—this embodies the struggle spirit of the Party as the subject of self-revolution and is deeply rooted in the cultural gene of the Chinese nation’s discarding the old and establishing the new.
Achieving self-purification means insisting on advancing self-revolution with the courage to turn the blade inward in terms of ideology. Discarding the old and establishing the new is first of all an ideological removal of the old and adoption of the new. Confucius summarized the history of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, emphasizing: “The Yin dynasty followed the rites of the Xia; what was added and what was omitted can be known. The Zhou dynasty followed the rites of the Yin; what was added and what was omitted can be known. Should there be a successor to the Zhou, even a hundred generations hence, it can be known” (The Analects, “Wei Zheng”). [17]17 The Analects (论语, Lun Yu), a collection of sayings and ideas attributed to Confucius and his disciples, is a core text of Confucianism. “Wei Zheng” (为政) is the second chapter. The entire development of history is nothing but the result of the interaction and mutual replacement of “following” and “changing.” “In the process of change, every event has a basis in the past; this is called ‘following,’ and it also differs from the past, adding to or subtracting from the past to adapt to new circumstances; this is called ‘changing.’” [18]18 This quotation is from a modern Chinese scholar’s commentary on the Analects, likely Feng Youlan or a similar figure. [19 The development of history is precisely through the mutual supplementation of “following” and “changing” that it can be “known even after a hundred generations.” In Party building, self-purification is the primary task of self-revolution. There is “breaking” and “establishing”: “breaking” refers to eliminating all ideological viruses that erode the health of the Party’s body, consciously cutting open the lesion, purifying the political ecosystem, and enhancing the Party’s own immunity; “establishing” refers to establishing firm ideals and convictions, strengthening intra-Party supervision and extra-Party supervision, and creating a multi-dimensionally integrated model of self-purification. Firm ideals and convictions are the cornerstone for enhancing the capacity for self-purification and maintaining the Party’s purity. The CPC insists on using lofty ideals and convictions to lead the entire Party, deepening education on the original aspiration and founding mission of Party members, and through a series of centralized intra-Party education activities, continuously strengthens the spiritual pillar of the Party membership, achieving the unity of “establishing” and “breaking” in self-purification. Xi Jinping emphasized: “The emergence of various problems among some Party members and cadres is, in the final analysis, due to confusion in faith and spiritual loss.” [19]19 “Continuously deepening the understanding of the laws of self-revolution, and integrating comprehensive and strict governance of the Party into the new layout of Party building”: A formulation from official CPC documents, referring to the systematic integration of strict Party discipline into all aspects of Party construction (ideological, organizational, stylistic, etc.) in the New Era. In Party building, the Party’s purity and the ideals and convictions of Party members and cadres face the “Four Tests” and the “Four Dangers,” [20] which require the entire Party to give full play to the spirit of discarding the old and establishing the new, to take achieving self-purification as the primary task of self-revolution, and to persistently carry out theoretical and belief education.
Achieving self-perfection means insisting on advancing self-revolution with the courage to turn the blade inward in terms of institutions. Governing the state and ordering the people lies in rectifying their institutions. For the CPC, self-perfection means focusing on enhancing governing efficacy and leadership level, strengthening institutional building, establishing a systematic and efficiently operating system of laws and regulations, and perfecting the mechanism of power operation to ensure scientific decision-making, effective execution, and thorough supervision. Institutions are fundamental, holistic, and stable, directly affecting the effectiveness of Party governance and Party discipline. The institutional normative system for the Party’s self-revolution is a comprehensive normative system with the Party Constitution as the foundation, democratic centralism as the core, and encompassing multiple forms. “All ways of benefit keep pace with the times” (The Book of Changes, “Yi Hexagram”). [21] Since the New Era, our Party has “insisted on building an institutional normative system for self-purification, self-perfection, self-renovation, and self-improvement,” [22] has successively made three major revisions to the Party Constitution, and has repeatedly revised the Regulations of the Communist Party of China on Disciplinary Sanctions, the Regulations of the Communist Party of China on Intra-Party Supervision, and the Regulations of the Communist Party of China on Inspection Work, [23] continuously perfecting the Party’s institutional building, giving full play to the important position and role of institutional building in Party building, and demonstrating our Party’s inheritance and development of the cultural gene of the Chinese nation’s discarding the old and establishing the new.
Achieving self-renovation means insisting on advancing self-revolution with the courage to turn the blade inward in reform and innovation. “Chinese civilization is a civilization that discards the old and establishes the new, shining with new brilliance day by day, interweaving still waters with surging waves.” [24] The Chinese nation created Chinese civilization by upholding the concept that “although Zhou was an old state, its mandate was renewed” (The Book of Rites, “Daya · King Wen”), [25] and insisted on the thinking of “if you can renew yourself for one day, then renew yourself daily, and again renew yourself” (The Book of Rites, “The Great Learning”) [26] to promote national development and progress. Whether it was Shang Yang’s reform, Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei’s reform, Wang Anshi’s reform, or Zhang Juzheng’s reform, [27] all embody the Chinese nation’s awareness of renovation and the innovative spirit of Chinese civilization. Advancing the Party’s self-revolution with the spirit of reform and innovation is our Party’s conscious inheritance and promotion of Chinese civilization. Xi Jinping pointed out at the celebration of the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up: “Strengthen and perfect oneself with the spirit of reform and innovation, and temper and improve in responding to risks and challenges.” [28] The great practice of reform and opening up is a vivid portrayal of our Party drawing on the spirit of discarding the old and establishing the new from Chinese civilization; advancing the Party’s self-revolution with the spirit of reform and innovation is also a contemporary manifestation of our Party drawing on this spirit. Only reformers advance, only innovators are strong, and only those who reform and innovate prevail. The courage to turn the blade inward, as an important component of the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit, is prominently manifested in the distinct theme of comprehensive and strict governance of the Party in the New Era. The Central Eight-Point Regulations are a powerful move and an innovative strategy for the Party’s self-renovation, and also an effective path for the Party’s self-revolution. On the new journey of the New Era, only by closely centering on the distinct theme of comprehensive and strict governance of the Party, insisting on governing the Party with the spirit of reform and strict standards, and always advancing self-revolution with the courage to turn the blade inward, can we lead the great social revolution with the great self-revolution and ensure that all undertakings of the Party and the state are full of vitality.
Achieving self-improvement means insisting on advancing self-revolution with the courage to turn the blade inward in being adept at learning. Confucius said: “The gentleman does not seek to eat his fill, nor seek to dwell in comfort; he is quick in action but cautious in speech; he seeks the company of the virtuous to correct himself—this can be called fond of learning” (The Analects, “Xue Er”). [29] Confucius regarded “fondness for learning” as a precious quality and a self-cultivation activity; the ultimate pursuit of “fondness for learning” lies in achieving the quality of the “gentleman,” which is precisely the core meaning of The Analects. As the largest Marxist ruling party in the world, the CPC has always regarded learning as the driving force and source for its own development, growth, and self-perfection. Our Party adheres to the fine style of study of integrating theory with practice, striving to achieve learning for application, using application to promote learning, and enabling mutual growth between learning and application. As a Marxist ruling party, through learning, it achieves its own renovation and improvement, and gains the support and endorsement of the people, reflecting our Party’s pursuit of the spirit of discarding the old and establishing the new. During the Yan’an period, Mao Zedong emphasized: “There is a kind of panic in our ranks; it is not economic panic, nor political panic, but panic about incompetence.” [30] Mao Zedong had long-term reflections and long-range plans for strengthening the Party’s learning, strengthening intra-Party learning by establishing leadership systems and learning systems, and setting an example by taking the lead. The CPC, through learning, continuously deepens its understanding of the “Three Laws” [31] of Communist Party governance, socialist construction, and the development of human society. Throughout its journey, the CPC has used learning to promote self-improvement, and self-improvement to advance self-revolution. This is an inherent requirement for building a Marxist learning party, and also an inherent requirement for advancing the Party’s self-revolution.
IV. Consciousness of Sobriety, the “Taking the Examination” Spirit, and the Chinese Nation’s Unremitting Self-Improvement and Striving Spirit
The striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is the deepest spiritual pursuit and the most resolute individual quality of the Chinese nation. “It is precisely this spirit of reform and openness—‘As Heaven’s movement is ever vigorous, so must a gentleman ceaselessly strive for self-improvement,’ and ‘As the Earth’s capacity is vast and sustaining, so must a gentleman cultivate virtue to carry all things’—that has made Chinese civilization the only brilliant civilization in human history to have continued unbroken for over 5,000 years.” [19]19 “Continuously deepening the understanding of the laws of self-revolution, and integrating comprehensive and strict governance of the Party into the new layout of Party building”: A formulation from official CPC documents, referring to the systematic integration of strict Party discipline into all aspects of Party construction (ideological, organizational, stylistic, etc.) in the New Era. The reason the Chinese nation values the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is that the movement of Heaven, the alternation of the four seasons, and the cycle of day and night are the constant laws governing all things; striving to be strong, seeking self-renewal, and never stopping are manifestations of the virtue of firmness and vigor. The striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is the source of the Chinese nation’s endless vitality and is also a fine tradition formed by the Communist Party of China as it grew from small to large and from weak to strong. Xi Jinping pointed out: “Facing new challenges and new tests on the new journey, we must be highly vigilant and forever maintain the sobriety and caution of those on a ‘road of examination’ (gankao).” [20] The CPC’s emphasis on always maintaining a “sober consciousness” in Party building and self-revolution profoundly embodies the Chinese nation’s striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement and highlights the fine quality of “achieving virtue through self-strengthening.” The CPC’s sober consciousness is a comprehensive and profound self-awareness and grasp of the external environment. On March 23, 1949, Mao Zedong and others left Xibaipo [21] and prepared to go to Beiping. Before leaving, Mao Zedong said: “Today is the day we enter the capital. We are going to the capital to take an examination.” Zhou Enlai replied: “We should all be able to pass the examination and not be sent back.” This dialogue expressed the Party’s profound reflection on the upcoming governing practice and tests. To build a Marxist political party that governs long-term, there must be a “road of examination” spirit, which is also a manifestation of the Chinese nation’s striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement in the New Era. The striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is the inexhaustible source of power that has enabled the Chinese nation to endure long-term prosperity and the CPC to grow from a small party into a large party. Xi Jinping pointed out in his report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC: “The entire Party must bear in mind that comprehensive and strict governance of the Party is always on the way, and the Party’s self-revolution is always on the way.” This is the Party’s sober recognition of deepening self-revolution and also highlights the Party’s firm determination never to stop on the new “road of examination” in the New Era. Our Party, with a high degree of sober consciousness and a firm “road of examination” spirit, is committed to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, a grand cause for millennia, forging itself into a strong Marxist governing party through continuous self-revolution.
The Communist Party of China is a Marxist political party dedicated to the grand cause of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation for millennia, and it maintains its vitality and vigor through the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement. The Chinese nation’s striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is deeply rooted in the traditional Chinese worldview and outlook on life, providing the CPC with powerful spiritual motivation for tenacity and daring to change over its more than one hundred years of growth. “There is none who have not a beginning, but few can reach the end” (The Book of Songs, “Daya · Dang”). [22] This is a manifestation of the Chinese nation’s spirit of unremitting self-improvement. Xi Jinping uses this to inspire and call upon all Party
The Communist Party of China is a Marxist political party that insists that “self-revolution is always on the road” and advances on the new “examination” journey of the New Era with the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement. “He who overcomes others is powerful; he who overcomes himself is strong.” (Dao De Jing, Chapter 33) The striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement is a spiritual treasure accumulated over thousands of years of Chinese history, and it is also a powerful support for the CPC to advance steadily on the new “examination” journey and promote the prosperous development of the Chinese nation. Xi Jinping’s important assertion that “the Party’s self-revolution is always on the road” demonstrates our Party’s determination to promote self-revolution with the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement and to forever maintain its advanced nature and purity through continuous self-revolution, and it manifests our Party’s confidence in building a long-term governing Marxist political party. “The Party’s self-revolution is always on the road” means that self-revolution is a continuous process, requiring the entire Party to remain vigilant at all times and unswervingly advance the great new project of Party building. Integrating the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement into the great new project of Party building means that the CPC must always maintain a clear mind, strengthen its determination for self-revolution, and continuously promote the Party’s self-revolution with the spirit of unremitting self-improvement. Comprehensive and strict governance of the Party, as the great practice of the Party’s self-revolution in the New Era, has opened up a new realm for the self-revolution of a century-old major Party. Only by continuously maintaining the mental state that self-revolution is always on the road and shaping the Party’s leadership ability and institutional advantages for long-term governance can we guide the great ship of socialism with Chinese characteristics to brave the wind and waves and sail steadily forward.
The CPC is an advanced Marxist political party tempered through continuous self-revolution, and it is the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement that ensures the Party does not change its nature, color, or flavor. As a Marxist governing party, our Party possesses a high degree of political sobriety in strengthening its own construction and strictly governing the Party; this sober consciousness contains the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement. Since the day the Party was founded, the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement has run through the Party’s century-long struggle journey, been integrated into the Party’s bloodline, and become a core element of the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit. Our Party’s process of pursuing “self-overcoming” clearly embodies the principle that “an advanced Marxist political party is not born naturally, but is tempered through continuous self-revolution.” For Party members, it is necessary to strengthen education in ideals and convictions and Party spirit cultivation, cultivate uprightness, exercise thinking, elevate the realm, and enhance political judgment, political comprehension, and political execution ability; from the perspective of the entire Party, our Party has consistently adhered to the principle of addressing both symptoms and root causes in governing the Party and enforcing strict discipline, and in comprehensively and strictly governing the Party, “continuously deepening the understanding of the laws of self-revolution, and integrating comprehensive and strict governance of the Party into the new layout of Party building,” [19]19 “Continuously deepening the understanding of the laws of self-revolution, and integrating comprehensive and strict governance of the Party into the new layout of Party building”: A formulation from official CPC documents, referring to the systematic integration of strict Party discipline into all aspects of Party construction (ideological, organizational, stylistic, etc.) in the New Era. taking “strictness” as the guide and “practicality” as the foundation, combining efforts to solve current problems with promoting the resolution of fundamental problems, adopting decisive measures to eliminate ills while also focusing on inner cultivation and cultural nurturing to consolidate the foundation and strengthen the roots, persistently using the striving spirit of unremitting self-improvement to continuously purify the Party’s ranks, and forever maintaining the Party’s advanced nature and purity.
Traditional Chinese excellent culture is the crystallization of the wisdom of all Chinese ethnic groups and is also the cultural foundation for the CPC to strengthen its own construction. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit has a high degree of compatibility with the spirits of being vigilant in peace, being cautious and introspective when alone, discarding the old and establishing the new, and unremitting self-improvement found in traditional Chinese excellent culture. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit has enabled the static genes of traditional Chinese excellent culture to achieve a dynamic transformation. Through a process from compatibility to integration and then to fusion between traditional Chinese excellent culture and the Party’s self-revolutionary spirit, the creative transformation and innovative development of traditional Chinese excellent culture have been realized. The Party’s self-revolutionary spirit, rooted in traditional Chinese excellent culture, lays a profound cultural foundation for our Party to govern the Party, rejuvenate the Party, and strengthen the Party in the New Era, and also provides powerful spiritual strength for the New Era to solve the unique problems of a major Party and build a long-term governing Marxist political party.
