Promoting the Great Spirit of the Chinese Nation, Building the Shared Spiritual Homeland of the Chinese Nation

In his speech at the National Conference on Commending Model Units and Individuals for Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that efforts should be made to build the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation, so as to provide strong spiritual and cultural support for advancing the building of the Chinese national community. As a product of the long historical accumulation of Chinese civilization, the great spirit of the Chinese nation plays an important role in shaping national identity, maintaining social harmony, and promoting national prosperity and development. Accurately grasping the inherent logical connection between the great spirit of the Chinese nation and the shared spiritual homeland is the core pathway to forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

习近平总书记在全国民族团结进步表彰大会上的讲话中指出，着力构筑中华民族共有精神家园，为推进中华民族共同体建设提供强大精神文化支撑。作为中华文明长期历史积淀的产物，中华民族伟大精神，对塑造民族认同、维护社会和谐、推动国家繁荣发展有着重要作用。准确把握中华民族伟大精神和共有精神家园的内在逻辑关联，是铸牢中华民族共同体意识的核心路径。

With its tenacious will, profound wisdom, and inclusive and open-minded character, the Chinese nation has nurtured a unique great spirit. The great spirit of the Chinese nation runs through every era of Chinese civilization. It is not only the spiritual pillar and driving force of the Chinese nation but also the solid foundation for building the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation.

中华民族以其坚忍不拔的意志、博大深邃的智慧和包容开放的胸襟，孕育出了独特的伟大精神。中华民族伟大精神，贯穿于中华文明的每一个时代，不仅是中华民族的精神支柱和动力源泉，更是构筑中华民族共有精神家园的坚实基石。

The sharing of spiritual connotation. The great spirit of the Chinese nation is the core of the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation; it embodies the core values and spiritual pursuits of the Chinese nation. The great spirit of the Chinese nation not only inherits the cultural genes of "ceaseless self-renewal" [1]1 "Ceaseless self-renewal" (自强不息) is a classical Chinese idiom from the *I Ching* (Book of Changes), describing the unyielding and self-motivating character of a noble person. and "great virtue of embracing all things" [2]2 "Great virtue of embracing all things" (厚德载物) is a classical Chinese idiom from the *I Ching*, describing the capacity to bear responsibility and be inclusive, like the earth supporting all things., but also manifests the value core of patriotism and collectivism in the New Era, jointly constituting the spiritual pillar and cultural foundation of the Chinese nation. The word "shared" in the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation contains an emphasis on and identification with the common spiritual connotation of the Chinese nation. The elements of excellent traditional culture contained in the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation, while constantly nourishing and enriching the great spirit of the Chinese nation, also integrate the great spirit of the Chinese nation into all aspects of social life, making it the common spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation.

精神内涵的共享。中华民族伟大精神是中华民族共有精神家园的内核，它体现了中华民族的核心价值观和精神追求。中华民族伟大精神既传承了“自强不息”“厚德载物”的文化基因，又在新时代彰显了爱国主义、集体主义的价值内核，共同构成了中华民族的精神支柱和文化底蕴。中华民族共有精神家园中的“共有”一词，蕴含着对中华民族共同精神内涵的强调和认同。中华民族共有精神家园蕴含的优秀传统文化元素，在不断滋养和丰富中华民族伟大精神的同时，又将中华民族伟大精神融入社会生活的各个方面，使之成为中华民族共同的精神家园。

The inheritance of history and culture. The great spirit of the Chinese nation is a precious spiritual wealth formed by the Chinese nation in its long historical development. It has been inherited and promoted through various forms such as oral transmission, written records, and artistic expression, becoming the common cultural identity of the Chinese nation. The continuous innovation and development of the great spirit of the Chinese nation impels the Chinese nation to constantly adapt to the changes and needs of the times, always maintaining vitality and vigor. Through cultural symbols, historical memories, and other forms, the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation carries the inheritance of the Chinese national spirit, strengthens the cultural consensus of the people of all ethnic groups across the country, continuously promotes the inheritance, development, and innovation of the great spirit of the Chinese nation, enhances the formation of a common cultural identity among the people of all ethnic groups across the country, becomes an important foundation for forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, and gathers immense spiritual strength for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

历史文化的传承。中华民族伟大精神是中华民族在长期历史发展中形成的宝贵精神财富，它通过口耳相传、文字记载、艺术表现等多种形式得以传承和弘扬，成为中华民族共同的文化认同。中华民族伟大精神的不断创新和发展，促使中华民族不断适应时代的变化和发展，始终保持活力与生命力。中华民族共有精神家园通过文化符号、历史记忆等多种形式，承载中华民族精神的传承，强化全国各族人民的文化共识，不断推动中华民族伟大精神的传承、发展和创新，增进全国各族人民形成共同的文化认同，成为铸牢中华民族共同体意识的重要基础，为实现中华民族伟大复兴凝聚磅礴精神伟力。

The strengthening of national identity. The great spirit of the Chinese nation, as the spiritual treasure of Chinese civilization, is an important source for inspiring national pride and a sense of identity. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that it is necessary to adhere to the correct view of Chinese national history and enhance the sense of identity with and pride in the Chinese nation. As a carrier of value consensus, the great spirit of the Chinese nation activates the historical memory of interactions, exchanges, and integration among all ethnic groups, leading the people of all ethnic groups to firmly establish the concept of the Chinese national community. Promoting the great spirit of the Chinese nation systematically advances the concrete practice of the concept of the "four commonalities" [3]3 The "four commonalities" (四个与共) refers to the concept that all ethnic groups in China share common territory, common history, common culture, and common destiny., enhancing the sense of identity with and belonging to the Chinese nation and Chinese culture among the people of all ethnic groups across the country. Building the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation, through various cultural activities and forms of exchange, enriches the cultural connotation of the Chinese nation, enabling all ethnic groups to unite more closely under a common cultural identity, and further enhancing the sense of belonging to and identity with the big family of the Chinese nation among the people of all ethnic groups.

民族认同的强化。中华民族伟大精神，作为中华文明的精神瑰宝，是激发民族自豪感和认同感的重要源泉。习近平总书记指出，必须坚持正确的中华民族历史观，增强对中华民族的认同感和自豪感。中华民族伟大精神作为价值共识载体，激活了各民族交往交流交融的历史记忆，引领着各族人民牢固树立中华民族共同体理念。弘扬中华民族伟大精神，系统推进“四个与共”理念的具象化实践，增强全国各族人民对中华民族和中华文化的认同感和归属感。构筑中华民族共有精神家园，通过各种文化活动和交流形式，丰富中华民族文化内涵，使各民族在共同的文化认同中更加紧密地团结在一起，进一步增强各民族群众对中华民族大家庭的归属感和认同感。

The resonance of value pursuits. The great spirit of the Chinese nation is the soul of the nation that unites hearts and minds and makes the country strong. The patriotism, collectivism, and core socialist values contained in the great spirit of the Chinese nation coalesce the value consensus of all ethnic groups. They not only shape the spiritual core of Chinese civilization but also lay the value foundation for building the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation. Its common values here govern the moral norms within the cultural pattern of "unity in diversity" [4]4 "Unity in diversity" (多元一体) is a concept used by Chinese scholars, notably Fei Xiaotong, to describe the pattern of the Chinese nation as a unified entity composed of diverse ethnic groups., bearing the deepest value pursuits of all sons and daughters of the Chinese nation. Under this, all ethnic groups jointly participate in the construction of socialist modernization and jointly realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

价值追求的共鸣。中华民族伟大精神是凝心聚力的兴国之魂、强国之魂。中华民族伟大精神蕴含的爱国主义、集体主义、社会主义核心价值观，凝聚了各民族价值共识，不仅塑造了中华文明的精神内核，更为建设中华民族共有精神家园奠定了价值基础。其共同价值观念在此统摄了“多元一体”文化格局中的道德准则，承载着中华各族儿女最深层次的价值追求，各民族在此共同参与到社会主义现代化建设中，共同实现中华民族伟大复兴。

As the core symbol of Chinese civilization, the great spirit of the Chinese nation embodies the historical wisdom jointly created by the people of all ethnic groups. Through five thousand years of civilizational evolution, it has been continuously tempered and sublimated, becoming the spiritual cornerstone supporting the great cause of national rejuvenation. It stimulates the nation's innovative vitality and struggle enthusiasm, enhances national cohesion, strengthens national identity, injects unique spiritual characteristics and cultural endowments into the Chinese national community, and becomes a powerful spiritual driving force that inspires the Chinese nation to continuously advance.

作为中华文明的核心标识，中华民族伟大精神凝聚着各族人民共同创造的历史智慧，在五千年文明演进中不断淬炼升华，成为支撑民族复兴伟业的精神基石。它激发了民族创新活力和民族奋斗热情，增强了民族凝聚力，强化了民族认同感，为中华民族共同体注入了独特的精神特质与文化禀赋，成为激励中华民族不断前进的强大精神动力。

Promote the great spirit of creation, stimulate the nation's innovative vitality. Only reformers advance, only innovators are strong, and only those who reform and innovate prevail. The great spirit of creation is the most distinctive endowment of the great spirit of the Chinese nation. It runs through the past, present, and future of the Chinese nation's development. It is not only an inexhaustible driving force for promoting the innovative development of Chinese culture but also the key to maintaining the national spiritual bond and enhancing cultural confidence. The great spirit of creation has promoted the continuous growth and expansion of Chinese civilization, enhanced the confidence of the people of all ethnic groups in Chinese civilization, promoted the development of cultural diversity and inclusiveness, provided continuous impetus for the construction of the shared spiritual homeland, and contributed more wisdom to the process of human civilization development. In the New Era, promoting the great spirit of creation gathers the powerful strength of the Chinese nation to pursue dreams and create the future, stimulates the cultural creativity of the entire nation, promotes cultural prosperity and development, writes the contemporary chapter of Chinese civilization, advances the progress of human civilization, and ensures that the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation always maintains vitality and appeal.

The great spirit of struggle is deeply rooted in the extensive and profound Chinese civilization, embodying the spiritual outlook of the Chinese nation's ceaseless self-renewal and courageous striving. It is the most abundant spiritual force of the Chinese nation and also the solid cornerstone of the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation. The great spirit of struggle inspires the people of all ethnic groups to constantly pursue progress, be brave in innovation, and dare to strive. It is an important driving force for promoting national progress and civilizational development. The great spirit of struggle, through Chinese cultural identity, mobilizes the people of all ethnic groups to participate in the great practice of realizing the Chinese Dream [5]5 The "Chinese Dream" (中国梦) is a political slogan introduced by Xi Jinping, referring to the, and, guided by common ideals and beliefs, impels all ethnic groups to walk together with one heart on the path of rejuvenation. In the New Era, promoting the great spirit of struggle gathers the immense power of unity and struggle among all ethnic groups, stimulates the struggle enthusiasm of the entire nation, encourages the people of all ethnic groups to be indomitable and forge ahead courageously in the face of difficulties and challenges, and provides a continuous source of power for building the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation.

弘扬伟大奋斗精神，激发民族奋斗热情。伟大奋斗精神深深根植于博大精深的中华文明，体现了中华民族自强不息、勇于拼搏的精神风貌，是中华民族最丰沛的精神力量，也是中华民族共有精神家园的坚实基石。伟大奋斗精神激励着各族人民不断追求进步、勇于创新、敢于拼搏，是推动民族进步和文明发展的重要动力。伟大奋斗精神，以中华文化认同动员各民族人民投身中国梦的伟大实践，以共同理想信念为指引推动各民族在复兴道路上同心同行。新时代弘扬伟大奋斗精神，凝聚起各民族团结奋斗的磅礴伟力，激发起全民族的奋斗热情，鼓励着各族人民在面对困难和挑战时不屈不挠、勇往直前，为构筑中华民族共有精神家园提供了源源不断的动力。

It is rooted in the historical soil of the long-term common life of the Chinese nation and is the spiritual bond for all ethnic groups to jointly resist foreign aggression, jointly overcome natural disasters, and jointly create a splendid civilization. The great spirit of unity not only embodies the collective wisdom and strength of the Chinese nation but is also an important cornerstone for maintaining ethnic harmony and promoting cultural integration. It is the lifeline of the people of all ethnic groups in our country. The great spirit of unity provides common spiritual pursuits and value orientation for the joint struggle of all ethnic groups, and moreover provides solid spiritual support for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In the New Era, promoting the great spirit of unity enhances the identification of the people of all ethnic groups across the country with the Chinese nation and Chinese culture, stimulates the common sense of responsibility and belonging of all ethnic groups, strengthens national cohesion and centripetal force, encourages all ethnic groups to seek commonality on the basis of respecting differences, consolidates the root of ethnic unity and the soul of ethnic harmony, ensures that the shared spiritual homeland of the Chinese nation maintains its charm, and makes the Chinese national community more indestructible.

The great spirit of the dream is an excellent cultural gene integrated into the bloodline of the Chinese nation, containing the spiritual core of the Chinese nation’s ceaseless self-renewal and courageous struggle. It is the common spiritual pillar of hundreds of millions of Chinese sons and daughters and the soul of the shared spiritual home of the Chinese nation. The great spirit of the dream originates from the long history and profound culture of the Chinese nation; it is the unremitting pursuit formed by the Chinese nation in the long process of development for national prosperity, national rejuvenation, and the happiness of the people. The great spirit of the dream encourages people of all ethnic groups to maintain firm faith and courage when facing difficulties and challenges, to realize the organic integration of personal dreams and national dreams through concrete actions, and always guides the development and progress of the Chinese nation. In the New Era, carrying forward the great spirit of the dream strengthens the sense of identity of people of all ethnic groups with the big family of the Chinese nation, and is of great significance for building the shared spiritual home of the Chinese nation and forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation. [6]6 The term “community for the Chinese nation” (中华民族共同体) refers to the political, economic, cultural, and emotional unity of all ethnic groups in China, a concept central to contemporary CCP nationality policy.
