· · CPC History & Party Building · CPC History Studies, 2025, no. 2 · 12 min read

Since the new period of reform and opening up, with the high regard of the Party and the state and the unremitting efforts of numerous scholars, research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance has achieved fruitful results and significant progress, becoming an important period and field in the study of CPC history. Currently, academia increasingly focuses on studying the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance from an international perspective and multiple viewpoints, causing it to gradually shift from a single-dimensional political and military history toward a more three-dimensional, pluralistic overall history. In order to continue promoting, deepening, and innovating research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance in the context of the New Era, on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the academic symposium “Research on the History of the CPC’s War of Resistance from the Perspective of Overall History,” jointly hosted by the editorial department of *CPC History Studies* and the School of Marxism of Harbin Institute of Technology, was held on November 16, 2024, at the Shenzhen campus of Harbin Institute of Technology. More than 30 experts and scholars from multiple domestic universities, Party schools, military academies, and research institutes, as well as editors from several academic journals, attended the meeting.

This symposium placed equal emphasis on both reviewing papers and conducting roundtable discussions in the form of keynote speeches. During the paper review session, a total of 8 papers were selected for discussion, with research scope covering multiple regions such as North China, Central China, and South China, and research content involving multiple dimensions including military strategy, organizational mobilization, social life, weaponry, relations between the Kuomintang and the CPC, and international factors. Scholars generally agreed that research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance is increasingly showing trends of diversification and refinement in terms of perspectives, methods, fields, and the discovery and utilization of historical materials. Specifically, as related research continuously expands into new fields such as society, culture, and organizational building, traditional research in military, political, and economic fields is also being further deepened. Beyond existing historical narratives, new theoretical frameworks and research methods are widely adopted. The collection and organization of historical materials, the development and construction of databases, and other efforts have also led to significant progress in research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance. Within this academic development trajectory, the perspective of overall history has not only become a possibility but also possesses full necessity. Scholars believed that despite many advances, compared to the historical significance of the War of Resistance for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and its impact on the progress of world civilization, there remains considerable room for improvement in the existing research achievements, scope, and depth of the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance. To this end, scholars focused on new perspectives, new viewpoints, new materials, and new methods, conducting discussions from aspects such as macro theory, international perspective, multi-party interaction, and academic orientation. Many views held high academic value, contributing academic wisdom to advancing research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance.

How to promote research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance from the perspective of overall history was the focus of this conference. Scholars generally agreed that the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance should be examined within the entire international environment and context, scrutinized within the history of human society and the development of world civilization, and deepened in understanding the role and status of the CPC’s War of Resistance in important fields such as politics, economy, military, diplomacy, society, and culture by applying knowledge of world history. In particular, research on the relationship between China’s War of Resistance and the world should be strengthened. Only in this way can the vision and breadth of research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance be broadened, and its charm and brilliance be displayed. Scholars mentioned that when studying certain issues in the history of China’s War of Resistance, attention should be paid to comparisons with Europe, America, and countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. For example, one could analyze the latter’s coping strategies and results when facing aggression, thereby exploring the characteristics of China’s War of Resistance and the CPC’s War of Resistance. Regarding the reasons for the CPC’s great development during the War of Resistance period, some scholars emphasized adopting a holistic and coherent perspective, examining the War of Resistance and the War of Liberation [1]1 The War of Liberation (1945–1949) refers to the Chinese Civil War between the CPC and the Kuomintang, which followed the War of Resistance. along a single line, particularly focusing on the CPC’s political program and strategic tactics during this period. When studying the evolution and application of the CPC’s specific strategies in different regions during the War of Resistance period, it is necessary to note that some regions require “looking forward,” while others require “looking backward.” Specifically, some scholars pointed out that academic research on the history of the War of Resistance in Northeast China before August 1945 is still insufficient, and research on areas such as the Central Plains, Central China, and Shandong after August 1945 is also relatively lacking. In particular, most studies on the situation in various base areas from August 1945 to June 1946 are not sufficiently thorough. When studying the historical periodization of the 14-year War of Resistance [2]2 The “14-year War of Resistance” is the official Chinese periodization, dating the conflict from the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931 to Japan’s surrender in 1945, rather than the more common 8-year period starting in 1937., it should be discussed within the overall context of the World Anti-Fascist War, with a focus on examining the impact of the full outbreak of World War II and the outbreak of the Pacific War. Regarding the CPC’s role as the mainstay in the War of Resistance, some scholars emphasized that the Chinese battlefield should be viewed as a whole, comprehensively considering the situation on both the frontal battlefield and the enemy’s rear battlefield, and further strengthening detailed research on specific issues such as losses on the enemy’s rear battlefield and the quantity of weapons and equipment during the War of Resistance period.

Scholars put forward many constructive opinions and topics regarding the further expansion of research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance into dimensions such as regional War of Resistance history, social history, and cultural history. Regional War of Resistance history, especially the games among multiple political forces within various regions, has received widespread attention from academia. Starting from the relationship between the military and local areas, some scholars analyzed the impact of the military on local society from a historical sociological perspective, as well as the role of the military in Party-mass relations, thereby revealing the mechanisms of military-local cooperation and the ebb and flow of military-local contradictions in different regions. Other scholars, starting from the relationship between the military and schools, argued that the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political University [3]3 The Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political University (Kangda) was a CPC military academy established in 1936 in Yan’an to train cadres for the war effort. was a key link in the development of the People’s Army during the War of Resistance period, but the attention it receives from academia does not match its important role in the history of the People’s Army, and the excavation of historical materials and academic research should be deepened. The rear area is an important component of regional War of Resistance history. Some scholars pointed out that although research on the rear area is increasingly flourishing, problems remain, such as insufficiently high positioning, unclear orientation, and inadequate attention to and excavation of grassroots historical materials. In-depth research and comprehensive consideration should be given to relationships in the CPC’s rear area work, such as the whole and the part, openness and secrecy, domestic and international, upper levels and grassroots, inside and outside the Party, political and other aspects, and institutional and non-institutional forms. Furthermore, social history has become a new growth point in research on the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance. Some scholars expressed that concern for “people” should be strengthened, particularly in-depth research on social life topics such as combat and women, the War of Resistance and film, as well as medical and health care, and the care and resettlement of demobilized soldiers. Other scholars further emphasized that historical research aims to seek truth, and factors such as emotion, human nature, and interpersonal relationships should be fully considered to present the complexity and multifaceted nature of the history of the CPC’s War of Resistance. Cultural history is also an important field of concern for scholars. Some scholars pointed out that existing research has not paid sufficient attention to the CPC’s work in protecting cultural relics and historical sites during the War of Resistance period. For example, the transfer and protection of historical materials by the Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee [4]4 The Southern Bureau of the CPC Central Committee was the Party’s leading organ in the Kuomintang-controlled area (primarily Chongqing) during the War of Resistance, responsible for united front work and intelligence. is quite worthy of study.

As research on the CPC’s War of Resistance continues to deepen in traditional fields such as military affairs, politics, and economics, participating scholars believe that attention should be paid to re-examining and restarting research on traditional fields and conventional issues. Military history is a foundational component of War of Resistance research. Scholars, focusing on topics such as strategy and tactics, ordnance production, and weaponry and equipment, seek to reveal how the CPC’s War of Resistance was waged and how victory was achieved. Some scholars argue that when studying the formation of the New Fourth Army’s military strategy, full consideration must be given to the uniqueness of the “New Fourth Army” as a regional military concept, examining its strategic development and changes from the two dimensions of regional expansion and war evolution. Other scholars point out that to make military history research more precise and accurate, the completeness and richness of researchers’ knowledge structures are crucial. For example, the military industry in the anti-Japanese base areas was an important force supporting their development, but the academic community generally lacks a knowledge base in areas such as management, technology application, and product production. Participating scholars believe that a perspective from the history of technology can be adopted, focusing on the production processes, manufacturing techniques, and typical products of weaponry and equipment. Through a review of the development of the military industry, the CPC’s ability to mobilize and integrate under extreme material conditions can be examined. As an important stage of political change in modern China, the situation of popular democratic participation in politics during the War of Resistance period has always received attention. Some scholars point out that when studying the characteristics of the council system [5]5 The council system (参议会制度) refers to the representative assemblies established in the CPC’s anti-Japanese base areas during the War of Resistance, intended to implement a form of united front democracy., it is necessary to introduce a temporal factor, examining the system’s emergence, development, and evolution over the long duration of the War of Resistance. Regarding the economic history of the anti-Japanese base areas, some scholars advocate combining quantitative and qualitative research to further clarify basic economic data such as population, agricultural production, peasant burdens, and currency issuance in the base areas, thereby systematically presenting the complete historical picture of base area development. Other scholars believe that further research should be conducted on the gestation and development process of the theory of New Democracy [6]6 The theory of New Democracy (新民主主义理论) is Mao Zedong’s theoretical framework for a transitional stage between the semi-colonial, semi-feudal society and socialism, first fully articulated in 1940., clarifying the gestation and proposal process of “confiscating monopoly capital” among the three major economic programs of the New Democratic Revolution.

To deepen research on the CPC’s War of Resistance, participating scholars put forward many profound insights on methodology and research approaches. Scholars emphasized the importance of “comprehending the changes of past and present” [7]7 “Comprehending the changes of past and present” (通古今之变) is a classical Chinese historiographical ideal, originating from Sima Qian’s *Records of the Grand Historian*, emphasizing the understanding of historical change over time., arguing that temporal and spatial factors play a core role in exploring the causes and processes of historical events. They advocated strengthening the dialogue between history and reality, reflecting on historical issues from a contemporary perspective. Some scholars advocated introducing methods from global history research to broaden research horizons, enrich research content, and enhance problem awareness, arguing that while exploring specific issues, attention should also be paid to constructing macro-theoretical frameworks. Some scholars suggested organically integrating disciplines such as history, political science, and Marxist theory to strengthen the elucidation of the CPC’s theoretical achievements. For example, it is necessary to systematically re-sort and summarize the theoretical contributions of leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Liu Shaoqi, as well as the military contributions of generals such as Zhu De. Other scholars believe that domestic academic research on the CPC’s War of Resistance can draw on Western scholars’ perspectives on the history of cultural concepts, but when doing so, critical thinking should be strengthened, paying attention to the sources of theories and their application in Western academia, including Japanese academia. Furthermore, some scholars argue that field investigation helps to discover geographical factors, mass foundations, social environments, and other conditions that are difficult to perceive through archival research alone, and is very important for the study of anti-Japanese base areas. At the same time, with the development of technology, some scholars proposed combining written materials with cultural relics, using virtual reality technology to reconstruct the industrial production processes of the War of Resistance period, in order to verify the accuracy of memoir historical materials. Other scholars emphasized the importance of various types of maps in the study of the CPC’s War of Resistance, arguing that existing research has not paid sufficient attention to such historical materials, and that greater emphasis should be placed on the role of historical and geographical factors.

From the perspective of overall history, the excavation and utilization of new historical materials, both domestic and international, are extremely important for expanding the research field and broadening research perspectives on the CPC’s War of Resistance. Some scholars stated that efforts should be based domestically while extensively, deeply, and comprehensively collecting historical materials worldwide, such as archives, diaries, letters, and photographs related to the CPC’s War of Resistance from foreign libraries, making foreign documents a powerful supplement for deepening the study of China’s War of Resistance. Some scholars emphasized that “peripheral data” such as Japanese-language materials can reflect important decisions and deployments of the CPC during the War of Resistance; Russian-language materials also have high research value, reflecting the Soviet Union’s strong support for the construction of anti-Japanese base areas in areas such as medicine, technology, and ordnance. Regarding strengthening the use and interpretation of Japanese materials, some scholars cautioned against being trapped within them, arguing that it is necessary to both restore historical facts and consider contemporary realities. Re-examining the study of the CPC’s War of Resistance from the perspective of overall history helps to identify gaps and weak points in historical materials. Participating scholars believe that the excavation and utilization of historical materials on several new topics should be strengthened, with particular attention to grassroots-level historical materials. For example, diaries, due to their directness and empathetic power, have unique value in historical research, especially serving as a supplement when archives are not fully open. However, currently, more diaries related to the CPC’s War of Resistance in North China have been collected, while those from Central and South China are relatively scarce, and Japanese-language diaries from the Kuomintang-controlled areas and enemy-occupied areas are particularly rare. The work of excavating relevant diaries shows a process of change from focusing on high-level decision-making to focusing on the political operations and daily life of the middle and lower levels of society. The academic community should pay attention to the diaries of middle- and lower-level intellectuals, whose records of grassroots society can provide new perspectives for the study of the CPC’s War of Resistance. Some scholars suggested using methods from historical anthropology to excavate materials, fully utilizing ancestral halls, temples, inscriptions, diaries, and letters to compensate for the insufficiency of archival materials. Other scholars pointed out that the work notes of military industry system leaders and New Fourth Army technical personnel are valuable research materials for the history of technology. Regarding the screening and use of memoirs, some scholars stated that, given the subjectivity and selectivity of memoirs, the historical facts within them need to be carefully discerned, combined with multi-angle materials for critical analysis, thereby avoiding “survivorship bias.”

In summary, at this symposium, experts and scholars expressed their views freely, jointly discussing frontier issues, weak links, and development directions in the study of the CPC’s War of Resistance. This injected new impetus into continuing to promote, deepen, and innovate research on the War of Resistance, especially the CPC’s War of Resistance, on the new journey of the New Era [8]8 The New Era (新时代) refers to the period beginning with the 19th National Congress of the CPC in 2017, characterized by the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.. Participating scholars pointed out that future research on the CPC’s War of Resistance should proceed from the perspective of overall history, further broaden the scope of research, and explore new topics such as war and the ecological environment, war and social security, ideology, culture and education, and laws and regulations; attention should be paid to the integrated application of interdisciplinary theories and methods, promoting the cross-fertilization of history and other social sciences; and the pursuit of “heterogeneity” should be maintained, breaking down rigid frameworks to discover what is changing and unique in history. Looking ahead, as disciplinary integration continues to deepen, research on the CPC’s War of Resistance will inevitably become more comprehensive and detailed, revealing more historical threads and contemporary significance, and making new academic contributions to understanding the historical process of the Chinese nation and the development of world history.
