November 16–17, 2013: “Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Forum (2013 · International Marxism) – Socialism and the Contemporary World” International Academic Symposium Held in Beijing

Sponsored by the Presidium of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and co-organized by the Academic Division of Marxist Studies and the Institute of Marxism, the “Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Forum (2013 · International Marxism) – Socialism and the Contemporary World” was held in Beijing on November 16–17, 2013. Nearly one hundred experts and scholars from the United States, Russia, France, Canada, Japan, Cuba, Turkey, and other countries, as well as from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Minzu University of China, Beijing Language and Culture University, Capital Normal University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Nankai University, and other universities and research institutions, attended this forum. Li Jie, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Deng Chundong, President of the Institute of Marxism, delivered addresses respectively. Cheng Enfu, Director of the Academic Division of Marxist Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Editor-in-Chief of the English quarterly *International Critical Thought*, presided over the opening ceremony.

由中国社会科学院学部主席团主办，马克思主义研究学部、马克思主义研究院联合承办的“中国社会科学论坛（2013年·国际马克思主义）--社会主义与当代世界” 于2013年11月16—17日在北京召开。来自美国、俄罗斯、法国、加拿大、日本、古巴、土耳其等国以及中国社会科学院、中联部、中国现代国际关系研究院、清华大学、北京师范大学、中央民族大学、北京语言大学、首都师范大学、上海财经大学、南开大学等高校、科研单位近百位专家学者出席了本届论坛。中国社会科学院副院长李捷和马克思主义研究院院长邓纯东分别致辞，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究学部主任、《国际思想评论》英文季刊主编程恩富主持开幕式。

In his address titled “Meeting the Challenges of the Times and Promoting the Continuous Innovation and Development of Marxist Theory,” Li Jie emphasized that in today’s era of economic globalization, the future of socialism is closely bound up with the economic and social development of the contemporary world. After the global financial crisis, world economic development remains unstable and uncertain, and the neoliberal economic, political, and cultural model has reached an impasse. Against this backdrop, jointly discussing the development of Marxism in the twenty-first century and new trends in socialism has major theoretical and practical significance. Marxism possesses the theoretical quality of advancing with the times; its adaptation to the times, to national conditions, and to the masses must be closely integrated with the practice of each country’s socialist reform and opening up and with the practice of world socialism. Only by standing at the forefront of the times, answering the questions of the times, and meeting the challenges of the times can it continuously develop and innovate. Socialism with Chinese characteristics follows and develops scientific socialism; it is still in the process of development and improvement. Although it still faces many risks and challenges, practice has proven and will continue to prove that it is the best choice and the only path to realize the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We are in an era of unprecedented major adjustment, major collision, major change, and major development. To be fully prepared to meet the future, we must always maintain Marxist theoretical clarity and theoretical consciousness, and continuously promote Marxist theoretical innovation, practical innovation, disciplinary innovation, and discourse system innovation.

李捷在“迎接时代挑战，推进马克思主义理论的不断创新发展”的致辞中，强调在经济全球化的今天，社会主义的前途和当代世界经济社会发展息息相关。全球金融危机后，世界经济发展仍处于不稳定不确定中，新自由主义的经济、政治、文化模式陷入僵局。在此背景下，共同研讨21世纪马克思主义的发展与社会主义的新动向，具有重大的理论和现实意义。马克思主义具有与时俱进的理论品质，其时代化、本土化、大众化，必须紧密结合本国社会主义改革开放实践和世界社会主义实践，勇立时代潮头、解答时代问题、应对时代挑战，才能不断发展创新。中国特色社会主义是科学社会主义的遵循和发展，还在发展和完善之中，尽管还面临着诸多风险和挑战，但实践已经证明并将继续证明，它是实现中华民族伟大复兴中国梦的最佳选择和必由之路。我们正处于一个前所未有的大调整、大碰撞、大变动、大发展的时代，要充分做好应对未来的准备，就必须时刻保持马克思主义的理论清醒和理论自觉，不断推动马克思主义的理论创新、实践创新、学科创新、话语体系创新。

In his welcome address, Deng Chundong said that the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China had just concluded a few days earlier. This plenary session reviewed and approved, and has now published in full, the “Decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Several Major Issues Concerning Comprehensively Deepening Reform,” which makes an overall plan for China’s comprehensive deepening of reform at a new historical starting point and is a programmatic document for China’s comprehensive deepening of reform in the new period. This decision provides top-level design and planning for the improvement of all systems and mechanisms of socialism with Chinese characteristics and for ensuring the sustained and healthy development of the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. In the next step, the entire Party and the people of all ethnic groups across the country will earnestly study, implement, and carry out the spirit of the plenary session, closely unite around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as General Secretary, forge ahead with determination and overcome difficulties, write a new historical chapter in the great cause of reform and opening up, and strive to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects, continuously win new victories for socialism with Chinese characteristics, and realize the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation! At such a historical moment, scholars from all over the world gathering together to jointly explore issues of Marxism, socialism, and the contemporary world will certainly have important theoretical value and positive practical significance.

邓纯东在欢迎辞中说，中国共产党十八届三中全会刚刚闭幕几天，这次全会审议通过并已全文公布了《中共中央关于全面深化改革若干重大问题的决定》，对新的历史起点上我国全面深化改革作出了总体性部署，是新时期中国全面深化改革的纲领性文件。这个决定对于中国特色社会主义各方面体制机制的完善，确保中国特色社会主义事业持续健康发展，作出了顶层设计和规划。下一步，全党全国各族人民将认真学习贯彻落实全会精神，紧密团结在以习近平同志为总书记的党中央周围，锐意进取、攻坚克难，谱写改革开放伟大事业的历史新篇章，为全面建成小康社会、不断夺取中国特色社会主义新胜利、实现中华民族伟大复兴的中国梦而奋斗！在这样的历史时刻，来自世界各地的学者齐聚一堂，共同探讨马克思主义、社会主义与当代世界问题，一定会有着重要的理论价值与实践上的积极意义。

This forum brought together influential well-known scholars from various disciplinary fields around the globe. Centering on the theme “Socialism and the Contemporary World,” they jointly discussed the development of Marxism in the twenty-first century and new trends in socialism. David Kotz, Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; Michael Perelman, Professor of Economics at California State University, Chico; David Laibman, Professor at the City University of New York and Editor of *Science & Society*; Kenneth Surin, Professor of Literature, Religion, and Critical Theory at Duke University; Janell Watson, Editor of *The Minnesota Review*; Elinor Cobern, Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and the American University of Paris and Editor of *Socialism Studies*; Viktor Alekseyevich Yefimov, Rector and Professor of Economics at St. Petersburg State Agrarian University; Vladimir Mikhailovich Zaznobin, Professor at St. Petersburg State Agrarian University; Kenji Morinaga, Professor at the Graduate School of Economics and Management, Tohoku University; Ingar Solty, Special Research Fellow at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation; Sasaki Tsutomu, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and Professor at the School of Humanities, University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Fan Jianxin, Hu Leming, Jin Minqing, Liu Shuchun, Feng Yanli, Xin Xiangyang, and Yu Bin, researchers and professors at the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, along with other well-known scholars from relevant fields at home and abroad, delivered keynote speeches at the conference. This forum also held group discussions on three topics: critical thought and the contemporary world; critique of and resistance to globalized capitalism; and the development and practice of Marxism. Participating scholars engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on related issues. During the conference, an expanded meeting of the editorial board of the English quarterly *International Critical Thought*, founded by the Academic Division of Marxist Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was also held. Scholars from various countries conducted in-depth discussions on how to run *International Critical Thought* well and promote exchanges in Marxist and left-wing academic thought.

本次论坛汇聚了全球各学科领域有影响力的知名学者，围绕主题“社会主义与当代世界”，共同研讨21世纪马克思主义的发展与社会主义的新动向。美国马萨诸塞大学安默斯特分校经济系教授大卫·科茨、美国加州州立大学奇科分校经济系教授迈克·佩罗曼、美国纽约城市大学教授、《科学与社会》主编大卫·莱伯曼、美国杜克大学文学、宗教与批判理论教授肯尼思·苏林、美国《明尼苏达评论》主编哲奈尔·华生、巴黎高等社会科学院与巴黎美国大学教授、《社会主义研究》主编伊琳·科伯恩、俄罗斯圣彼得堡国立农业大学校长、经济学教授维克多·阿列克西耶维奇·叶菲莫夫、俄罗斯圣彼得堡国立农业大学教授弗拉基米尔·米哈伊洛维奇·扎兹诺宾、日本东北大学经济与管理研究生院教授守建二、德国卢森堡基金会特聘研究员英格尔·索尔泰、日本东京大学荣誉教授、中国科学院大学人文学院教授佐佐木力、中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院樊建新研究员、胡乐明教授、金民卿研究员、刘淑春研究员、冯颜利研究员、辛向阳研究员、余斌教授等国内外相关领域的知名学者在会上作了主题发言。本届论坛还围绕批判思想与当代世界、对全球化资本主义的批判与抵抗、马克思主义的发展与实践等三个专题进行了分组讨论，与会学者对相关问题展开了深入地交流和研讨。会议期间，还举行了由中国社会科学院马克思主义研究学部创办的国际英文季刊《国际思想评论》杂志编委扩大会议，各国学者对如何办好《国际思想评论》杂志、促进马克思主义及左翼学术思想的交流，进行了深入的研讨。
