October 9: President and Party Secretary Deng Chun-dong Meets Spanish Scholars in Madrid

On October 9, 2016, Deng Chun-dong, President and Party Secretary of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, held a frank and in-depth exchange in Madrid, Spain, with Mr. Rafael Bueno, Director of the Department of Politics, Economy and Education of the Spanish “Asia House,” and his delegation, who are co-organizers of the Spanish session of the “China Path” Europe Forum, regarding the preparations for the Spanish session of the “China Path” Europe Forum and topics of mutual concern.

2016年10月9日，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院院长、党委书记邓纯东在西班牙马德里，与“中国道路”欧洲论坛西班牙会场合办方代表——西班牙“亚洲之家”政治、经济与教育部主任拉法尔·布宜诺（Rafael Bueno）先生等一行，就“中国道路”欧洲论坛西班牙会场的筹办情况及双方各自关心的话题，进行了坦诚而深入的交流。

Spanish representatives participating in the discussion also included Ms. Georgina Higueras, President of the Spanish Association of Chinese Alumni; Researcher Miguel Otero-Iglesias of the Spanish Royal Elcano Institute; Professor Pedro A. García Bilbao of King Juan Carlos University, Senior Researcher of the China-Spain Think Tank; Professor Maximiliano Fernández; and Mr. Chen Wenjun, representative of the China-Spain Think Tank, along with other prominent Spanish scholars and institutional representatives on China-related issues.

President Deng Chun-dong first explained in detail to the attending Spanish scholars the original intention and significance of convening the “China Path” Europe Forum. President Deng Chun-dong pointed out that China’s thirty years of reform and opening up have achieved accomplishments that have attracted worldwide attention, and that interpreting the successful experience and reasons of the “China Path” and offering suggestions for China’s response to the challenges of globalization are the unshirkable responsibilities of Chinese scholars. He expressed a keen expectation that this trip to Spain would elicit valuable opinions and suggestions from Spanish academia on the China Path and the “China Path” Europe Forum itself.

邓纯东院长首先向与会的西班牙学者详细介绍了举办“中国道路”欧洲论坛的初衷和意义。邓纯东院长指出，中国改革开放三十年取得了举世瞩目的成就，诠释“中国道路”的成功经验和原因、为中国应对全球化挑战出谋划策是中国学人义不容辞的责任，此次西班牙之行热切期待西班牙学界能对中国道路及“中国道路”欧洲论坛本身提出宝贵的意见建议。

Ms. Georgina Higueras stated that the China-Europe Forum provides an excellent platform for exchange between Chinese and European, especially Chinese and Spanish, scholars on major contemporary issues such as China-Europe relations, regional situations, and the global landscape. Researcher Miguel Otero-Iglesias believed that China is playing an increasingly important role in the international political and economic order, that China’s confident and open attitude is a powerful rebuttal to European protectionism, and that China and Spain have many experiences worth exchanging and learning from in areas such as reform and opening up. Professor Pedro A. García Bilbao argued that China and Spain face many common development challenges, that all sectors of Spanish society urgently need to understand a China “without any filtering,” and that Sino-Spanish academic exchanges should be based on direct bilateral dialogue rather than learning about each other through information from third countries.

乔治娜·依格拉斯女士表示，中欧论坛为中欧尤其是中西学者交流中欧关系、地区形势、世界格局等重大的时代议题提供了绝佳的交流平台。米盖尔·奥特洛·伊格莱西亚研究员认为，中国在国际政治经济秩序中发挥着越来越重要的国际影响力，中国自信开放的态度对欧洲保护主义是一个有力的回击，中国和西班牙在改革开放等领域有许多值得交流互鉴的经验。佩德罗·加西亚教授认为，中西两国面临许多共同的发展挑战，西班牙各界亟待了解一个“未经任何过滤”的中国，中西学术交流应立足于双边直接对话，而非借助第三国的资讯了解彼此。

President Deng Chun-dong expressed sincere gratitude for the relevant views and suggestions put forward by the Spanish scholars and conveyed his willingness to further strengthen cooperation and exchanges with Spanish academia.

邓纯东院长对西班牙学者提出的相关看法和建议表示衷心感谢，并表达了与西班牙学界进一步加强合作交流的意愿。

Researcher Tang Zhou-yan, Party Secretary of the Shandong Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Qin Xuan of the School of Marxism Studies at Renmin University of China; Researcher Lü Wei-zhou, Director of the International Communist Movement Department of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Professor Li Ji-xing, Director of the China Balance Theory Research Center at Peking University, along with other Chinese representatives, also participated in the discussion.
