On October 11, 2016, the “2016 China Road Europe Forum (France Session)” was held in Paris, co-organized by the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the French Communist Party, the Gabriel Péri Foundation of France, the French Research Center on Social Thought, and the French journal *La Pensée*, with support from the French newspaper *L’Humanité*, the Theory Department of the Chinese *People’s Daily*, the Editorial Office of the Chinese journal *Studies on Marxism*, and the Marxism Editorial Office of the *Journal of Social Sciences in China*.

The forum was themed “The Five Development Concepts and the China Road.” [1]1 The Five Development Concepts (五大发展理念) refer to innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing, introduced by the CPC leadership in 2015 as guiding principles for China’s development. The nearly 40-member Chinese expert delegation, led by Deng Chundong, President of the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, came from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Shandong and Anhui provincial academies of social sciences, and more than 30 Chinese universities including Tsinghua University and Renmin University of China.

Over 100 representatives and relevant experts and scholars from the Gabriel Péri Foundation, the Research Center on Social Movements and Thought, the journal *Le Projet*, the French newspaper *L’Humanité*, the Executive Committee of the Party of the European Left, the Economic and Social Solidarity Committee of the French Communist Party, the Institute of Marine Ecology and Environment, the Central Committee of the French Communist Party, the Socio-Economic Committee of the French Communist Party, and the European Parliament attended.

President Deng Chundong raised several hopes for the China Road Europe Forum jointly organized by China and France: first, he hoped that Chinese academia and the French Communist Party could exchange views on issues of development and governance and propose countermeasures to solve problems; second, he hoped to use the forum to promote mutual understanding between the Chinese and French peoples and enhance bilateral exchanges, cooperation, and friendship; third, he hoped that the Communist Party of China and the French Communist Party, as comrades sharing common ideals and beliefs, could maintain a clear understanding of the era they inhabit and, under new historical conditions, have a clear grasp of the lines, principles, and policies to be adopted, as well as the prospects and trends of the socialist movement.

Alain Obadia, President of the Gabriel Péri Foundation, pointed out that China’s geopolitical situation determines that China needs to cooperate with developing countries to change the post-war international order. Progressive French figures are paying attention to this development and engaging in discussions between leaders and researchers. The financial crisis since 2008 has weakened Europe’s economy and political power, even plunging it into a survival crisis. Under these circumstances, the relationship between China and Europe is particularly important.

The conference was divided into four sessions. Participating experts and scholars discussed topics including the Belt and Road Initiative and new developments in China-Europe relations, the Five Development Concepts and the driving forces of global transformation, the Paris Agreement and the establishment of a fair and reasonable climate change governance mechanism, and the implementation of an innovation-driven development strategy and the building of an innovative country, while interacting with the audience.

Finally, President Deng Chundong summarized the forum. He pointed out that although the countermeasures proposed by China and France for the common problems they face each have their own merits, both sides offered good suggestions on how Europe can escape the crisis. When France discusses China-related issues, it demonstrates a belief in Marxism, an adherence to Marxist positions, viewpoints, and methods, and a pursuit of the communist cause. We feel we have found kindred spirits.

Patrick Le Hyaric, Member of the European Parliament and head of the French newspaper *L’Humanité*, expressed gratitude to the Chinese comrades. He pointed out that the exchanges between China and France fully reflect the profound friendship and mutual willingness to understand between the two countries. He hoped that cooperation, exchanges, and dialogue between China and France could continue, so that France can better understand the current situation in China and the world and find new ideas for solving problems and overcoming crises.
