October 15: 2016 China Road Europe Forum (Italy Session) Held in Rome

On October 15, 2016, the “2016 China Road Europe Forum (Italy Session)” was held in Rome, co-hosted by the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Italian Association for the Political Culture of 21st-Century Marx, the Italian publishing house “21st-Century Marx,” and the Italian Communist Party.

2016年10月15日，由中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院、意大利二十一世纪马克思政治文化协会、意大利“二十一世纪的马克思”出版社、意大利共产党共同主办的“2016中国道路欧洲论坛（意大利会场）”在罗马举行。

The forum took as its theme “The Five Development Concepts and the China Road.” [1]1 The “Five Development Concepts” (五大发展理念) refer to innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing, introduced by the CPC leadership in 2015 as guiding principles for China’s development during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016–2020). The Chinese expert delegation, led by Deng Chundong, President of the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, comprised nearly 40 people from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Shandong and Anhui provincial academies of social sciences, and more than 30 Chinese universities including Tsinghua and Renmin University.

本届论坛以“五大发展理念与中国道路”为主题，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院院长邓纯东率领的近40人的中国专家代表团，分别来自中国社会科学院、山东省与安徽省社科院及清华、人大等30多所中国高校。

The newly elected General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party, Mauro Alboresi; the editor-in-chief of *21st-Century Marx*, Andrea Catone; the President of the Italian Association for the Political Culture of 21st-Century Marx, Domenico Losurdo; the President of the Italian Gramsci Foundation Research Institute, Silvio Pons; and other Italian political and academic experts and scholars, together with over one hundred people from various sectors of Italian society, attended the forum.

新当选的意大利共产党总书记玛乌罗·阿尔伯莱西、《二十一世纪马克思》主编安德烈·卡托内、二十一世纪马克思政治文化协会主席多米尼克·洛苏尔多、意大利葛兰西基金会研究院院长西尔维奥·彭斯等意大利政治学术界专家学者意大利社会各界相关人士共一百余人与会。

President Deng Chundong first expressed his gratitude to the co-hosts of this China-Europe Forum. In his opening address, he introduced to the guests the original intention and development process of the co-sponsored “China Road Europe Forum” since 2014, and presented the achievements made in friendly exchanges and in publicizing the China Road between China and Italy. He proposed further expanding the topics for discussion at the “China Road Europe Forum”: first, he hoped that Chinese and Italian scholars would conduct in-depth discussions on the current situation in Europe, the difficulties it faces, the role of the European Union and important issues of global governance, and the current state and development trends of the contemporary world socialist movement; second, he hoped that the Chinese and Italian sides would each provide more introductions to their own national conditions, including the work of the Communist Party of China and the Italian Communist Party, as well as domestic and foreign policies, and that through conference exchanges, mutual understanding among various sectors of Chinese and Italian society would increase, so as to enhance the understanding, comprehension, and mutual trust between the peoples and social sectors of the two countries; third, he hoped that the “China Road Europe Forum” would propose some practical and feasible measures and content for further strengthening academic and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Italy.

邓纯东院长首先向本届中欧论坛的主办方表示感谢。他在开幕式致辞中向各位来宾介绍了2014年以来合作创办“中国道路欧洲论坛”的初衷和发展历程，并介绍了中国和意大利两国在友好交流和宣传中国道路方面取得的成果。他建议进一步拓展“中国道路欧洲论坛”的研讨议题：一是希望中意双方学者就当前欧洲的情况、面临的困难、欧盟的作用和全球治理的重要问题、当代世界社会主义运动现状和发展形势展开深入研讨；二是希望中意双方各自对本国状况，包括中国共产党和意大利共产党等的工作情况、内外政策等问题多作介绍，并通过会议交流增加中意双方社会各界对彼此的认知，以便增加两国人民、社会各界对彼此更多的了解、理解和互信；三是希望“中国道路欧洲论坛”就进一步加强中意两国如何开展更多学术、文化上的交流和合作，提出一些切实可行的措施和内容。

Mauro Alboresi first congratulated the successful convening of this forum. He believed that Italy’s understanding of China, of the Communist Party of China, and of socialism with Chinese characteristics is very limited, and that this situation must be changed through Sino-Italian exchanges and cooperation.

玛乌罗·阿尔伯莱西首先对本届论坛的成功召开表示祝贺。他认为，意大利对中国的了解，对中国共产党和中国特色社会主义的了解甚少，必须通过中意的交流合作改变这种状况。

Multiple participating experts and scholars conducted in-depth discussions on topics including the crisis of the European Union and how to overcome it, the internet and global governance, China-Europe, China-Russia, and China-US relations, the future of Marxism and socialism, how to oppose hegemonism and safeguard world peace, how to break the information monopoly of certain media, and how to strengthen China-Europe cooperation under the conditions of globalization.

与会多位专家学者围绕欧盟危机及如何克服，互联网及全球治理，中欧、中俄、中美关系，马克思主义和社会主义的未来，如何反对霸权主义、维护世界和平，如何打破某些媒体的信息垄断，如何在全球化条件下加强中欧合作等问题展开深入研讨。

Participating scholars generally held that: the American model has failed, and the universal values that the United States imposes on the world can only lead to crisis and turmoil; it is no longer feasible for the United States to seek global hegemony alone; the crisis of the European Union objectively exists, and relying on a single country like Germany or France to dominate the EU is unrealistic; the 21st century is the century of the Chinese people, and China is the guarantee of world peace and human progress in the 21st century, as well as a powerful guarantee against global injustice; to establish a new system of international governance, China’s active role must be brought into play, and China-Europe cooperation must be valued.

与会学者普遍认为：美国模式已经失败，美国强加给世界的普世价值只能导致危机动乱，美国一国欲称霸全球不再可行；欧盟危机是客观存在的，依靠德、法某一个国家主宰欧盟是不现实的；21世纪是中国人的世纪，中国是21世纪世界和平、人类进步的保障，是全球反不公正的有力保证；要建立新的国际治理体系， 必须发挥中国的积极作用，必须重视中欧合作。
