On October 22, Dean and Party Secretary Deng Chundong Holds a Discussion with Foreign Scholars

On the evening of October 22, Deng Chundong, Dean and Party Secretary of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, held a discussion with some dignitaries and scholars participating in the Seventh World Socialism Forum. Egon Krenz, the last General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of the former East Germany; Mauro Alboresi, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Italy; Igor Karpenko, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus and Deputy Secretary of the Minsk City Committee; Frédéric-David Bocara, member of the National Council of the French Communist Party, lecturer at Paris 13 University, and editorial board member of the French journal *Économie et Politique*; Iliyana Marcheva, researcher at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; and Yaroslav Listov, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation in charge of youth work, spoke on behalf of the foreign participants.

Chinese and foreign scholars engaged in in-depth discussions on the basic characteristics of socialism, the experiences and lessons of 20th-century socialism, the experience of the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Xi Jinping’s thought on governance, the transformation of socialist countries, and the opportunities, challenges, models, and prospects of 21st-century socialism, reaching many points of consensus. The foreign scholars highly affirmed the success of socialism with Chinese characteristics, believing that the key to this success lies in adhering to the basic principles of socialism and the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and that this theory has a positive role in promoting the development of the world socialist movement. Chinese and foreign scholars unanimously agreed that capitalism is already an outdated system, that socialism is a necessary choice for the world, and that confidence in the future of socialism must be maintained. 21st-century socialism should summarize the experiences and lessons of 20th-century socialism, adapt to the new circumstances of the 21st century, especially the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the information revolution, combine the basic principles of socialism with the concrete realities of each country, uphold basic socialist values such as equality, effectively leverage the role of the state, fully bring into play the principal role of the people of each country, and strengthen ties among socialists and left-wing progressive forces worldwide.

中外学者围绕社会主义的基本特征、20世纪社会主义的经验教训、中国特色社会主义道路的经验、习近平治国理政思想、社会主义国家的变革、21世纪社会主义的机遇、挑战、模式和前景等问题进行了深入的讨论,达成了许多共识。外方学者高度肯定了中国特色社会主义的成功,认为中国特色社会主义的成功关键在于坚持了社会主义的基本原则和中国共产党的领导,且这一理论对于世界社会主义运动的发展具有积极推动作用。中外学者一致认为,资本主义已经是一种过期的制度,社会主义对世界来说是一种必要的选择,要对社会主义的未来充满信心,21世纪社会主义应该总结20世纪社会主义的经验教训,适应21世纪的新形势特别是第四次工业革命和信息革命的需要,把社会主义基本原则与各国具体实际结合起来,坚持社会主义的平等等基本价值,有效发挥国家的作用,充分发挥各国人民的主体作用,加强全世界各国社会主义者和左翼进步力量的联系。

In his concluding remarks, Dean Deng Chundong pointed out that the foreign scholars’ full affirmation of socialism with Chinese characteristics greatly encouraged our confidence in persisting on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and further developed the friendly sentiments of the socialist family. Dean Deng Chundong’s proposal to hold similar discussions annually received an active response from the foreign participants.

邓纯东院长在总结发言时指出,这次座谈,外方学者对中国特色社会主义的充分肯定极大地鼓舞了我们坚持走中国特色社会主义的信心,进一步发展社会主义大家庭的友好情谊。邓纯东院长关于希望每年都举办类似座谈的提议得到了外方人士的积极响应。

Other scholars from Bulgaria attending the meeting included: Andrei Krasilnikov, assistant to the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Belarus; Evgeniy Kandilarov, researcher at the Institute of History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; Rolf Berthold, the last ambassador of the former East Germany to China; Francesco Marciolin, deputy director of the International Department of the Communist Party of Italy; Andrea Catone, editor-in-chief of the Italian journal *Il Marxismo del XXI Secolo*; and Dominique Bari, member of the Scientific Committee of the Gabriel Péri Foundation in France and editor-in-chief of the French journal *La Pensée*.
