December 4–7, Dean and Party Secretary Deng Chundong Conducts Academic Activities in the United Kingdom

On the evening of December 4 local time, Dean Deng Chundong met with Stephen Perry, Chairman of the 48 Group Club, and Keith Bennett, Vice Chairman of the Group. Dean Deng Chundong and Chairman Perry reached a high degree of agreement on strengthening Party leadership over state-owned enterprises, so that leaders of state-owned enterprises can uphold socialist values while pursuing profitability. Mr. Perry believes that the way for the world to escape the current round of economic and financial crisis lies in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Africa’s economic development. However, the prerequisite for achieving both is the formation of a relative balance of power among China, the United States, Russia, and Europe—the several poles of the world—so as to maintain relative stability in the global political environment. Dean Deng highly commended and sincerely thanked Mr. Perry’s father, Jack Perry, founder and chairman of the 48 Group Club, for being the first Briton to break the Western economic blockade of New China and lead 48 British enterprises to trade with China, expressing the hope that Mr. Perry would continue to help China as always.

On the afternoon of December 5 local time, Dean Deng Chundong met with former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone. The two sides candidly exchanged views on the current economic situation of the European Union and how to strengthen cooperation between China and the EU in areas such as economy, trade, and culture. They also discussed policies on affordable rental housing in modern metropolises. Livingstone argued that building affordable rental housing is an important measure to curb excessively rapid housing price increases in metropolises. Although during his tenure as Mayor of London he envisioned alleviating the rapid rise in London housing prices through the construction of affordable rental housing, due to differences in the political systems of China and the United Kingdom, he lacked the power and resources to build such housing.

On the evening of December 5 local time, Dean Deng Chundong engaged in extensive and in-depth exchanges with ten individuals from various industries and academic disciplines in the United Kingdom on topics including Brexit, the election of Donald Trump as U.S. President, and the political and economic situation in Europe since the 2008 world economic and financial crisis.

On the morning of December 6 local time, Dean Deng Chundong chaired a seminar at the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom on “The Political and Economic Situation in Europe and the United States after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis.” Twelve British scholars participated in this seminar. Prominent British Marxist scholars Sean Sayers, David McLellan, and Michael Burke all argued that the Brexit referendum revealed political divisions within the United Kingdom, and that even within the Conservative Party itself there is no consensus on whether the UK should leave the EU. Economic development disparities among EU member states have intensified; Germany is the main beneficiary of the European single market, while Eastern and Southern European countries have been left behind, posing a risk of EU disintegration. British international relations scholars Jude Woodward and John Ross, among others, also offered views on the direction of U.S. foreign policy after Trump’s inauguration and the characteristics of the international political landscape.

On December 7 local time, Dean Deng Chundong led a delegation of five—including Yu Bin, Director of the Department of Research on Marxist Principles, and researchers Luan Wenlian, Peng Wutang, and Chen Shuoying from the Academy of Marxism—to visit the editorial office of *New Left Review*. This visit was the first contact between this most famous Western left-wing journal and a delegation from the People’s Republic of China since its founding in 1960. Editors of *New Left Review* and the Verso publishing group, established by *New Left Review* in 1970, introduced their recently published works of significant influence. Both sides expressed a vision for strengthening future cooperation.

当地时间12月7日，邓纯东院长率马克思原理研究部主任余斌、马研院科研人员栾文莲、彭五堂、陈硕颖一行五人访问了《新左翼评论》（NewLeft Review）编辑部。这次访问是这家西方最著名的左翼刊物自1960年成立创刊以来第一次与来自中华人民共和国的代表团接触。《新左翼评论》以及由《新左翼评论》于1970年成立的Verso出版集团的编辑介绍了他们最近出版的影响力较大的作品。双方表达了今后加强合作的愿景。
