“Belt and Road” China-Serbia Cooperation Prospects International Forum Held in Belgrade

Chinese and Serbian experts and scholars gathered together to discuss strengthening China-Serbia cooperation.

International Online Report (China Radio International reporter Zhao Hongchao): The “Belt and Road” China-Serbia Cooperation Prospects International Forum, jointly hosted by the Institute of Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Confucius Institute at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia, and the China-Serbia Cultural Exchange Association, was held on the 6th in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. More than thirty scholars and professors from Chinese social research institutions, along with Serbian experts and scholars, conducted discussions around the theme of “Strengthening International Cooperation between China and Serbia.”

Deng Chundong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Institute of Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, interpreted the foundation of China-Serbia friendship at the opening ceremony: First, Serbia was once part of the socialist camp, and there is traditional friendship between China and Serbia; second, after the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia continued to maintain close ties with China, and China has also been very concerned about the situation in Serbia; finally, during the NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, China-Serbia friendship withstood the test of blood and fire and grew stronger over time. He pointed out that in recent years, under the advocacy of President Xi Jinping, China-Serbia relations have been further elevated. He expressed the hope that this forum could achieve the following goals: First, further promote friendly cooperation and people-to-people friendship between the two countries; second, under the Belt and Road Initiative, promote new achievements in China-Serbia cooperation; third, hope to strengthen exchanges, cooperation, and friendship with the Communist Party of Serbia in various aspects.

It is not only beneficial to China’s neighboring countries but also significant for the global resolution of current problems facing the world and regional economies.

Ivana Radivka, a researcher at the Serbian Institute of International Politics and Economics, also presented her thoughts on the Belt and Road Initiative during the discussions. She stated that the Belt and Road Initiative promotes the development of relevant countries and fosters the economic integration of China with countries around the world; it is a long-term development strategy. “16+1” [2]2 “16+1” refers to the cooperation framework between China and 16 Central and Eastern European countries, launched in 2012, later expanded to “17+1” with the inclusion of Greece in 2019. is a political dialogue platform conducive to strengthening cooperation between China and Central and Eastern Europe. Serbia has a historical friendship with China, and its special geographical location determines that Serbia is an important link in the Belt and Road. China and Serbia can further cooperate in areas such as trade, people-to-people exchanges, energy, and telecommunications.
