On October 7, Dean and Party Secretary Deng Chundong Holds Discussion with Eva Solla, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Galicia
On the morning of October 7, 2017, the day after the conclusion of the Fourth China Road Europe Forum in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Researcher Deng Chundong, Dean and Party Secretary of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, led a portion of the Chinese delegation to a dedicated discussion with Eva Solla, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Galicia and Vice President of the Parliament of Galicia.
Dean Deng Chundong expressed profound respect for Eva Solla and the Communist Party of Galicia she leads, thanked her for attending this forum, and offered opinions on several important issues. Eva Solla candidly answered questions of concern to the Chinese scholars. Eva Solla pointed out that the Communist Party of Galicia’s contact with the Chinese side has mainly occurred in recent years. The Spanish people initially had doubts about the Chinese government’s “Belt and Road Initiative,” fearing that Chinese enterprises would come to Spain to plunder and seize resources; after several years of practical interaction, these doubts have been dispelled, and they have seen that the Belt and Road Initiative is different—it is not a replica of colonialism. Eva Solla believes that the West must understand the Chinese path, but it is difficult to do so while carrying Western biases and prejudices. One must see through phenomena to grasp the essence, and truly understand China starting from its specific national conditions. China is a populous country, facing both the heavy task of ensuring the basic needs of 1.3 billion people and serious imbalances in social development. Solving these problems is itself a remarkable achievement. On the issue of religion, Eva Solla stated that Spain is a country that advocates religious freedom, and the majority of the population believes in Catholicism. However, the Communist Party of Spain recommends that every Party member should be an atheist; in Galicia, over 90% of Party members do not practice religion. Eva Solla expressed hope for more opportunities for cooperation and exchange between the Chinese and Spanish Communist Parties, and for the establishment of permanent exchange institutions.
Also participating in the discussion were Li Chunhua, Party Secretary of the Institute of Urban Development and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Researcher Xin Xiangyang, Deputy Party Secretary of the Institute of Information Studies; Researcher Chen Zhigang of the Academy of Marxism; Researcher Hao Lizhong, Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Shandong Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Yu Li of the School of Public Administration of Zhengzhou University; Professor Lan Hanlin, Party Secretary of the School of Marxism of Zhejiang University of Technology; Professor Julio Oriz, Honorary Dean of the Galician Institute of International Analysis and Documentation; and Eva Solla’s assistant.
