October 11: Dean and Party Secretary Deng Chun’un Holds Discussion with Major Leaders of the Italian Left Party

On the afternoon of October 11, 2017, a nine-member delegation led by Researcher Deng Chun’un, Dean and Party Secretary of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, held an in-depth and candid discussion with Giuseppe De Cristofaro, a major leader of the Italian Left Party and a senator, and former Senator Claudio Grassi.

2017年10月11日下午，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院院长、党委书记邓纯东研究员一行9人，与意大利左翼党主要领导人、参议员朱塞佩•德•克里斯托法罗，以及前参议员克劳迪奥•格拉西进行了深入坦诚的座谈交流。

Dean Deng Chun’un first expressed gratitude to De Cristofaro and Grassi for attending the meeting despite their busy schedules, and praised the increasingly important role the Italian Left Party is playing in Italy’s national political life. De Cristofaro and Grassi welcomed the visit of Dean Deng Chun’un’s delegation. The two sides exchanged views on issues of common concern. De Cristofaro introduced the history and current situation of the Italian Left Party and the crisis currently facing the European Union, and offered his views on the rise of populism in Europe and the United States and the growth of right-wing forces. De Cristofaro argued that China’s social progress is not only economic but also significant in all other respects. In Europe, however, there are problems with democracy and human rights; democracy has not advanced but has instead shrunk, with very low voter turnout. Grassi candidly pointed out that the Italian Left Party is currently in a difficult period and that they are working hard to propose solutions to the problems. Both sides expressed a shared desire to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

邓纯东院长首先对克里斯托法罗和格拉西能够在百忙之中出席会谈表示感谢，并对意大利左翼党在意大利国家政治生活中正在发挥愈益重要的作用表示称赞。克里斯托法罗和格拉西对邓纯东院长一行的来访表示欢迎。双方就共同关心的问题进行了交流。克里斯托法罗介绍了意大利左翼党的历史、现状和欧盟当前面临的危机，并对欧美民粹主义的抬头和右翼实力的发展发表了看法。克里斯托法罗认为，中国社会的进步不仅仅是在经济方面，在其他各方面的进步也都是显著的。而欧洲在民主和人权方面也存在问题，民主不但没有进步，反而有所萎缩，选民的投票率很低。格拉西坦诚地指出，意大利左翼党当前处于困难时期，他们正在努力提出解决问题的方案。双方都共同表达了要进一步加强交流合作的愿望。
