Speech by Dean and Party Secretary Deng Chundong at the Founding Conference of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

尊敬的各位领导、各位同志：

Today, the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is formally established. We feel very pleased, we are greatly encouraged, and we are aware of the heavy responsibility.

今天，中国社会科学院习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想研究中心正式成立，我们感到十分高兴，我们受到很大鼓舞，我们意识到责任重大。

First, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, to express sincere gratitude and heartfelt respect to the leaders and scholars both within and outside the academy who have provided much guidance, support, and assistance to the work of the Academy of Marxism and to our research on Marxism and its adaptation to the Chinese context.

首先，我想借此机会，代表中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院向长期以来对马研院的工作，对我们进行的马克思主义及中国化的研究给予了很多指导、支持和帮助的院内外的领导和学者们表示真诚的感谢和由衷的敬意！

The 19th National Congress of the CPC [1]1 The 19th National Congress of the CPC was held in October 2017, where Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was written into the Party Constitution. summarized the Party’s innovative theory as Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and established it as the guiding ideology that the Party must uphold for the long term. This has far-reaching historical significance for our Party building and for the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era has elevated our Party’s understanding of the laws of governance by the Communist Party, the laws of socialist construction, and the laws of the development of human society to a new theoretical height. Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era systematically answers the major contemporary question of what kind of socialism with Chinese characteristics to uphold and develop in the New Era and how to uphold and develop it. It is a powerful ideological weapon guiding our Party in carrying out the great struggle, building the great project, advancing the great cause, and realizing the great dream [2]2 "The great struggle, the great project, the great cause, and the great dream" is a standard four-part slogan from the 19th National Congress, referring respectively to the struggle against various challenges, Party building (the "great project"), the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation., and it is the guiding ideology that our Party must uphold for the long term.

党的十九大把党的创新理论概括为习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，并确立为党必须长期坚持的指导思想。这对于我们党的建设，对于中国特色社会主义伟大事业都具有深远的历史意义。习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，使我们党对共产党的执政规律、社会主义建设规律和人类社会发展规律的认识达到了新的理论高度。习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想系统回答了新时代我们坚持和发展什么样的中国特色社会主义、怎样坚持和发展中国特色社会主义这个重大时代课题，是指导我们党进行伟大斗争、建设伟大工程、推进伟大事业、实现伟大梦想的强大思想武器，是我们党必须长期坚持的指导思想。

The establishment of our academy’s Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is a major event in China’s philosophy and social sciences circles, opening a journey for our academy to concentrate its superior forces on researching Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. With the unfolding of the Research Center’s work, the study, research, dissemination, and interpretation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences will inevitably enter a new stage. The establishment of the Center and the conduct of its work will positively promote the construction of our academy into a strong bastion of Marxism, better serving as a think tank for the Party and state decision-making, and will positively advance the construction of the disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of philosophy and social sciences disciplines guided by Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

我院习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想研究中心的成立是中国哲学社会科学界的一件大事，开启了我院集中优势力量研究习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的征程。随着研究中心工作的展开，中国社会科学院对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的学习、研究、宣传和阐释必将进入新的阶段。中心的成立及工作的开展对于把我院建设成为马克思主义坚强阵地、更好地发挥为党和国家决策服务的思想库作用，对于中国社会科学院构建以马克思主义为指导的哲学社会科学各个学科的学科体系、学术体系、话语体系都必将产生积极的推动作用。

As a specialized research institution for Marxism, all comrades of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences bear a sacred responsibility in studying, disseminating, and interpreting Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. Our academy must, under the organization and overall planning of the Party Leadership Group of the academy, conscientiously fulfill this responsibility and actively participate in the work of the Center. First, we ourselves must earnestly study Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. From now on, we will treat this study as the foundation and prerequisite for the professional work and academic activities of all comrades in our academy. On the basis of several years of earnest study, combined with the study of the spirit of the 19th National Congress, we will conduct it more systematically and more deeply, striving to master the scientific system, precise meaning, and essential substance of this thought.

作为马克思主义专门研究机构，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院的全体同志在学习宣传和阐释习近平中国特色社会主义思想方面，肩负着神圣的责任。我院要在院党组的组织和统筹下，认真履行这个责任，积极参与中心的工作。首先是我们自己要认真学习好习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想。今后，我们将把这个学习当作我院全体同志业务工作和学术活动的基础和前提，在近几年认真学习的基础上，结合十九大精神的学习，更加系统地、更加深入地进行，要努力掌握这个思想的科学体系、准确含义、精神实质。

Second, we must treat research on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the primary scientific research task of the Academy of Marxism in the future, as the main line of future scientific research work. The establishment of annual innovation projects, disciplinary settings, and academic activities must all take this as an important basis. At the same time, applications for major projects of the academy and the National Social Science Fund must also select topics around this content.

其次，是要把对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的研究当作马研院今后的首要科研任务，当作今后科研工作的主线，每年创新课题的设立、学科设置、学术活动开展都要以此为重要的根据。同时，申报院重大课题、国家社科基金也要围绕这个内容选择项目。

Third, we must vigorously disseminate and interpret Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. In recent years, the Academy of Marxism, implementing the requirements of the Party Leadership Group, has created and formed a series of forum brands in disseminating and interpreting the Party’s innovative theories, including the more than ten forums on adapting Marxism to the Chinese context held annually in China, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project forums, and the China Path forums we hold respectively in Europe and in Central and Eastern European countries. In the future, we will continue to use these forums as vehicles, connecting with domestic experts and scholars in Marxist research and teaching as well as foreign left-wing scholars, and continue to make efforts to run these forums well each year. At the same time, we will actively participate in the tasks of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ ideological and theoretical writing groups, publish as many articles as possible in various domestic and international media and academic activities, and make efforts in disseminating and interpreting Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in multiple ways, so that scholars of the Academy of Marxism can make due and greater contributions to arming the whole Party, educating the people, advancing work, and influencing the world with this scientific theory.

其三，是要大力宣传和阐释习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，近几年来马研院落实党组要求，在宣传、阐释党的创新理论方面已经打造、形成了系列的论坛品牌，包括我们每年在国内举办的10多个马克思主义中国化论坛、中国社会科学院马工程论坛和我们分别在欧洲、在中东欧国家举办的中国道路论坛。今后，我们将继续以这些论坛为载体，联系国内马克思主义研究和教学的专家、学者及国外左翼学者，每年持续、努力办好这些论坛。同时，还要积极参与中国社会科学院思想理论写作组的任务，在国内外各类媒体、各类学术活动中，尽可能多地发表文章，以多种方式在宣传、阐释习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想方面作出努力，为使这个科学理论更好地武装全党、教育人民、推动工作、影响世界做出马研院学者应有的、更多的贡献。
