The Academy of Marxism Holds a Study Report Meeting on “General Secretary Xi Jinping’s Speech at the Commemoration of the Centenary of the May Fourth Movement”

This year marks the centenary of the May Fourth Movement. On 30 April 2019, the “Commemoration of the Centenary of the May Fourth Movement” was solemnly held in the Great Hall of the People. General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping attended the meeting and delivered an important speech.

今年是五四运动100周年，2019年4月30日“纪念五四运动100周年大会”在人民大会堂隆重举行，中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平出席大会并发表重要讲话。

The Party Committee of the Academy of Marxism required all research personnel to watch General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speech at the first opportunity on the morning of 30 April and to earnestly study and comprehend it.

马研院党委要求全体科研人员于4月30日上午第一时间收看习近平总书记的讲话，并认真学习领会。

On the morning of 6 May, the Academy of Marxism organized a “Study Report Meeting on General Secretary Xi Jinping’s Speech at the Commemoration of the Centenary of the May Fourth Movement.” The meeting was chaired by Xin Xiangyang, Vice President and Researcher of the Academy of Marxism, and all research personnel of the Academy of Marxism attended the meeting.

5月6日上午，马研院组织召开“习近平总书记在纪念五四运动100周年大会上的讲话”学习汇报会。会议由马研院副院长辛向阳研究员主持，马研院全体科研人员参加会议。

Vice President Xin Xiangyang first pointed out that, in implementing the requirement of Comrade Jiang Hui, member of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, and concurrently Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Academy of Marxism, that all comrades of the Academy of Marxism thoroughly study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech at the Commemoration of the Centenary of the May Fourth Movement, the Academy of Marxism had focused on organizing young research personnel to conduct study reports on the General Secretary’s speech. At the meeting, six young research personnel representatives gave report speeches.

辛向阳副院长首先指出，落实社科院党组成员、当代中国研究所所长兼马研院党委书记、院长姜辉同志关于马研院全体同志深入学习贯彻习近平总书记在纪念五四运动100周年大会上的重要讲话精神的要求，马研院重点组织青年科研人员围绕总书记讲话进行学习汇报。会上，六位青年科研人员代表做汇报发言。

Liu Daoyi, Assistant Researcher in the Department of Principles, believed that to deeply understand and grasp the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech, one must reflect on and review the great contributions of the May Fourth Movement from the level of its spiritual core, and recognize that the ultimate foothold of the May Fourth Movement lies in realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. One must insist on viewing social change from a historical perspective, and the key lies in truly implementing the responsibility and commitment of youth. He also believed that it is necessary to grasp the historical mission of youth in the New Era in conjunction with the critical, progressive, practical, people-oriented, and enduring nature of the *Communist Manifesto*.

原理部助理研究员刘道一认为，深入领会和把握习近平总书记的重要讲话精神，要从精神内核的层面来反思和回顾五四运动的伟大贡献，要认识到五四运动最终的落脚点正在于实现中华民族伟大复兴的中国梦，必须坚持以历史的眼光看待社会变革，关键在于真切落实青年的责任担当。他还认为，有必要结合《共产党宣言》的批判性、先进性、实践性、人民性、永续性来把握新时代青年的历史使命。

Liu Yan, Assistant Researcher in the Department of Sinicization, starting from her identity as a Marxist theoretical worker, believed that to inherit and carry forward the May Fourth spirit, one must adhere to the combination of the basic principles of Marxism with China’s actual conditions and the characteristics of the times, continuously enrich and develop Marxism, and specifically explained how to solve the problems of truly understanding, truly believing in, and truly applying Marxism, and of whom Marxism relies on and whom it serves, from four aspects: strengthening academic faith, straightening the academic backbone, clarifying academic positions, and enhancing the explanatory power and dissemination capacity of academic discourse.

中国化部助理研究员刘燕从马克思主义理论工作者身份出发，认为继承和弘扬五四精神，必须坚持马克思主义基本原理与中国实际和时代特征相结合，不断丰富和发展马克思主义，并从坚定学术信仰、挺起学术脊梁、明确学术立场、增强学术话语的解释力和传播力四个方面具体阐释如何解决好真懂、真信、真用马克思主义和马克思主义依靠什么人、为什么人的问题。

Liu Zhichang, Associate Researcher in the Department of Development, speaking on the historical significance and contemporary spirit of the May Fourth Movement and the historical mission of youth, stated that one must deeply understand the historical significance of the May Fourth Movement and strengthen the Four Confidences; carry forward the May Fourth spirit and become a firm patriot; and, starting from oneself, strive hard to build a great modern socialist country.

发展部副研究员刘志昌围绕五四运动的历史意义和时代精神、青年的历史使命谈到，要深刻认识五四运动的历史意义，坚定四个自信；发扬五四精神，做坚定的爱国主义者；从我做起，为建设社会主义现代化强国努力奋斗。

He Qin, Associate Researcher in the Department of the International Communist Movement, with the title “Forging a New Youth and New Spirit for the New Era through Struggle,” combined with her own experience and reflections, stated that in the face of the constantly changing and developing New Era, our generation of youth must adhere to historical materialism and dialectical materialism, uphold the positions, viewpoints, and methods of Marxism, properly grasp the relationship between the individual and the times, thereby forming a correct worldview, outlook on life, and value system, scientifically understand the stage-specific characteristics of the New Era, and consciously devote themselves to the times and dedicate themselves to the motherland.

共运部副研究员贺钦以“在奋斗中铸就新时代新青年新精神”为题，结合自身经验体会谈到，面对不断变化和发展的新时代，我们青年一代必须坚持历史唯物主义和辩证唯物主义，坚持马克思主义的立场、观点和方法，把握好个人与时代的关系，从而形成正确的世界观、人生观和价值观，科学地认识新时代的阶段性特征，自觉投身时代、献身祖国。

Tang Fangfang, Assistant Researcher in the Department of Foreign Studies, believed that through understanding the historical significance and contemporary value of the May Fourth Movement, we youth of the New Era have strengthened our determination to take the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. She said that the fundamental principle for understanding the profound impact of the May Fourth Movement on contemporary China is to adhere to a grand historical perspective, understanding and grasping the May Fourth Movement within the context of the over 5,000-year history of Chinese civilization, the over 170-year history of struggle of the Chinese people since modern times, and the over 90-year history of struggle of the Communist Party of China; only by adhering to a grand historical perspective can we clearly see why socialism can take root and continuously improve and develop in China.

国外部助理研究员唐芳芳认为，通过对五四运动的历史意义和时代价值的认识，我们新时代青年坚定了走中国特色社会主义道路的决心。她说，认识五四运动对当代中国深远影响的根本原则是要坚持大历史观，把五四运动放到中华民族5000多年文明史、中国人民近代以来170多年斗争史、中国共产党 90 多年奋斗史中来认识和把握；只有坚持大历史观，才能看清楚为什么社会主义能够在中国落地生根并不断完善发展。

Liu Ying, Assistant Researcher in the Editorial Department of *Studies on Marxism*, combined the spirit of the General Secretary’s speech and the May Fourth spirit to discuss how to be a good social science youth from the perspective of editorial work. Starting from her own study and work experience, she believed that in today’s New Era, being an editor means being an editor who “stands upright between heaven and earth,” “possesses genuine talent and practical ability,” and “speaks for the people.” She said that editorial work requires a “family-country” sentiment, the courage to take responsibility, to stand at the forefront of the times, and to integrate contemporary issues into academic research and editorial activities; to be down-to-earth and do every small thing well; to diligently hone skills, increase talent, solidify the study of theoretical knowledge, and continuously enhance editorial skills; to put the people first, to be able to speak for the people, to “represent” the people, and to speak in language the people can understand.

《马克思主义研究》编辑部刘影助理研究员结合总书记讲话精神和五四精神，从编辑工作的角度谈到如何做好社科青年这一话题。她从自身学习工作经历讲起，认为在新时代的今天，做编辑就要做“顶天立地”“真才实干”“为人民立言”的编辑。她说，编辑工作需要拥有“家国”情怀，勇于担当，立时代潮头，把时代问题融入学术研究和编辑活动中；要脚踏实地，做好每一件小事；要苦练本领，增长才干，扎实理论知识的学习，不断增强编辑技能；要把人民放在第一位，要能为人民立言、为人民“代言”，说人民听得懂的话。

After the representatives’ speeches concluded, Vice President Xin Xiangyang delivered a summary speech. He pointed out that the speeches of all the representatives were very good, with new perspectives, practical relevance, depth, and literary grace. Many of the viewpoints and issues raised in the speeches deserve our in-depth consideration and study.

代表发言结束后，辛向阳副院长作总结讲话。他指出，各位代表的发言都很好，有新角度、有现实针对性、有深度、有文采，发言中的很多观点和提到的问题值得我们深入思考和学习。

He emphasized that studying the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s May Fourth speech requires, on the one hand, integrating it with the study

他强调，学习习近平总书记纪念五四讲话精神，一方面要将它同学习习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想融会贯通，另一方面要把讲话精神能够作为提高我们的科研工作的强大动力。首先，习近平总书记纪念五四讲话内容丰富而且系统，包含的思想博大精深；习近平总书记对五四运动伟大性质、伟大历史作用以及伟大历史遗产作了准确透彻概括，对当代中国青年所提出了六个方面要求，需要我们继续深入学习和不断从理论上进行研究的内容。现在海外存在一些针对五四运动爱国性质的质疑，这些需要我们用马克思主义立场观点方法认真分析、深入探讨并亮明马克思主义的正确立场观点。其次，很多重要问题需要我们进行深入的学术研讨，比如习近平总书记在重庆调研时指出的中国共产党为什么“能”、马克思主义为什么“行”、中国特色社会主义为什么“好”的问题，真正需要我们从学术上进行长期深入的研究。比如，对于中国共产党为什么“能”，我们可以从很多角度去分析，其中最主要的一点就是能够保证国家政治稳定，这是我们最强大的竞争力。最后，对于马克思主义，我们不仅要真学真懂真信，还要能够回答真用的问题，怎么做到真用，这也需要我们从世界观和方法论上进行回答，需要我们马研院的学者来做文章。
