The delegation members included researchers Sun Yingshuai, Zhang Jian, Zeng Xiankui, and assistant researcher Lou Yu from the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

From June 17 to 20, the delegation conducted academic exchange in Spain, holding discussions with institutions and scholars engaged in contemporary China studies, left-wing think tanks, and the Communist Party of Spain, to investigate the current state of overseas contemporary China studies, how to tell China’s story well, the development of left-wing political parties, and the development trends of contemporary world socialism.

The delegation visited the East Asia Research Center at the Autonomous University of Madrid and the East Asia Research Center at the Complutense University of Madrid, to learn about the teaching and library collections related to contemporary China studies. Associate Professor Lin Yue from the Autonomous University of Madrid teaches courses on China’s social economy and China’s foreign investment. Associate Professor Luo Huiling from the Complutense University of Madrid teaches courses on modern and contemporary Chinese culture and an introduction to political and cultural exchange between China and Spain. Both teachers have long been engaged in translating Chinese academic works into foreign languages, actively spreading Chinese culture in Spain. The delegation held discussions with Lin Yue and Luo Huiling respectively, exchanging views on topics such as overseas Chinese studies, Spanish academia and the public’s perception of contemporary China, and the dissemination and reception of contemporary Chinese publications in Spain. They also exchanged ideas on how to strengthen the telling of China’s story abroad, build an external discourse system, and enhance the international communication power of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

The delegation held a discussion with Marcelo Muñoz, President of the Foundation of the well-known Spanish China studies think tank “Cátedra China,” and Marta Montoro, Director of Institutional Relations, on how to tell China’s story well in Europe. In 2012, Marcelo Muñoz founded “Cátedra China,” a think tank composed of scholars, entrepreneurs, and former political figures engaged in China’s political and economic research and cooperation with China, serving as an important platform for various sectors in Spain to understand China. The “Cátedra China” Foundation highly identifies with China’s political, economic, and social development model and plays an active role in enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries and deepening exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

Rovetta has made outstanding contributions to spreading Chinese culture to Spanish-speaking countries, introducing contemporary China, and promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and foreign countries. In 2016, Rovetta was awarded the Spanish Order of Civil Merit. This medal is a government-level award signed and conferred by King Felipe VI of Spain, recognizing Rovetta’s outstanding contributions to promoting Spanish culture and cultural exchange between China and Spanish-speaking countries. From June 21 to 22, the delegation conducted academic exchanges in Portugal, holding discussions with contemporary China studies scholars and the Portuguese Communist Party on how to tell China’s story well, enhance China’s overseas image, and the current situation and development trends of the Portuguese Communist Party.

Accompanied by Professor Antônio dos Santos Queirós of the University of Lisbon, the delegation visited the University of Lisbon Library, the Confucius Institute, and the Faculty of Arts, with a focus on understanding library documents related to China studies.

He also offered suggestions on how to better promote China’s propositions, China’s wisdom, and China’s solutions, and to facilitate academic exchanges between China and foreign countries. Over several decades, Queirós has actively publicized the great achievements of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the economic, political, social, and ecological fields. He established the Portugal-China Cooperation and Development Association, bringing together people who understand and are friendly toward China, making positive contributions to telling China’s story well and building a good overseas image of China.
