Professor Michael Brie of Germany Visits the Academy of Marxism for Academic Exchange

On the morning of October 15, 2025, Professor Michael Brie, a member of the Advisory Committee of the German Left Party and former senior researcher at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, visited the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for an academic exchange on the topic “Rethinking the Concept of Socialism: The Era of China’s Rise and the Crisis of Western Civilization.”

2025年10月15日上午，德国左翼党顾问委员会委员、罗莎·卢森堡基金会原资深研究员米歇尔·布里教授来中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院，就“社会主义观念的再思考：中国崛起与西方文明危机的时代”问题进行学术交流。

Researcher Yu Bin, Director of the Department of Studies on Marxism Abroad at the Academy of Marxism, chaired the meeting. Researcher Yuan Xiuli, Director of the Department of Studies on the International Communist Movement, Researcher Liu Haixia, Deputy Director of the same department, and some relevant research personnel attended the meeting.

马克思主义研究院国外马克思主义研究部主任余斌研究员主持会议，国际共产主义运动研究部主任苑秀丽研究员、副主任刘海霞研究员及部分相关研究人员参加了会议。

Professor Brie examined the causes of the current crisis of Western civilization by tracing the essence of liberalism, the dilemma of left-wing liberalism in developed countries, and misunderstandings of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics. He pointed out that left-wing liberalism misleads left-wing forces into neglecting the innovation of the socialist system, making them accomplices in the Western ideological offensive against China. In fact, China’s practice shows that, under the leadership of the CPC, China has incorporated the market mechanism into the socialist framework through institutional innovation, both unleashing the vitality of capital and curbing its destructiveness. This exploration offers the Global South a new alternative different from the West.

布里教授从对自由主义本质的追溯，审视当前西方文明危机的原因、左翼自由主义在发达国家的两难选择以及对中国特色社会主义制度的误解等。他指出：左翼自由主义误导左翼力量忽视社会主义制度的创新，成为西方对华意识形态的帮凶。事实上，中国的实践表明，中国在共产党的领导下，通过制度创新将市场机制纳入社会主义框架，既发挥了资本的活力又抑制其破坏性。这一探索为全球南方提供了不同于西方的新选择。

The attending scholars and Professor Brie engaged in in-depth and lively discussions on the issues raised in his lecture, including the thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics, the crisis of Western civilization, and left-wing liberalism.

与会学者与布里教授就他讲座涉及的中国特色社会主义思想、西方文明危机、左翼自由主义等相关问题进行了深入热烈的讨论。
