Chinese Academy of Social Sciences News (Reporter Gao Ying) From December 26 to 27, the academic symposium on “Continuously Advancing the Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese Context and the Needs of the Times and the 20th Anniversary of the Founding of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences” was held in Beijing. Gao Xiang, President and Party Group Secretary of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, attended and delivered a speech. Jin Minqing, member of the Academy’s Party Group and Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, delivered a keynote report.

Gao Xiang stated that since the 18th National Congress of the CPC [1], the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has attached great importance to Marxist theoretical research and construction work. With a high degree of theoretical self-awareness and profound theoretical insight, General Secretary Xi Jinping has delivered a series of important discourses and issued a series of important instructions on strengthening Marxist theoretical research, profoundly answering a series of directional, fundamental, and long-term questions concerning upholding and developing Marxism, and systematically elucidating the direction, objectives, basic principles, fundamental tasks, and key work of Marxist theoretical research and construction, providing scientific guidance and fundamental follow-up for Marxist theoretical research work in the New Era. The Party Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has deeply studied and implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions and the decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee, adhered to taking the study and interpretation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the primary political task, theoretical task, and academic task, and adopted a series of powerful measures to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of the Academy’s Marxist theoretical research work.

高翔表示，党的十八大以来，以习近平同志为核心的党中央高度重视马克思主义理论研究和建设工作。习近平总书记以高度的理论自觉、深邃的理论洞见，围绕加强马克思主义理论研究，发表一系列重要论述，作出一系列重要指示，深刻回答了坚持和发展马克思主义的一系列方向性、根本性、长期性问题，系统阐明了马克思主义理论研究和建设的方向目标、基本原则、根本任务、重点工作，为新时代马克思主义理论研究工作提供了科学指引和根本遵循。中国社会科学院党组深入学习贯彻习近平总书记重要指示精神和党中央决策部署，坚持把研究阐释习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想作为首要政治任务、理论任务和学术任务，采取一系列有力措施，推动全院马克思主义理论研究工作不断提质增效。

Gao Xiang emphasized that adhering to the guidance of Marxism is the inevitable choice of 20th-century Chinese history and Chinese scholarship, and is also the fundamental hallmark distinguishing contemporary Chinese philosophy and social sciences from other philosophy and social sciences. It is necessary to always uphold the guiding position of Marxism in the field of philosophy and social sciences in our country, adhere to studying Marxism with a scientific attitude, deeply advance the systematic and scholarly research and interpretation of the Party’s innovative theories, and accelerate the construction of the basic theoretical system of the Marxist theoretical discipline; keep in mind the “greatest concerns of the country” [2], adhere to a global perspective, firmly stand on the people’s side, promote the fine style of study that integrates theory with practice, and continuously improve the ability and level to serve the overall situation of the Party and the country’s development; resolutely build a solid line of defense for ideological security, consolidate the platform for Marxist theoretical research and propaganda, and comprehensively enhance the international discourse power of adapted Marxism. The Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is the country’s first comprehensive research institution for Marxist theory, established under the direct care of the Party Central Committee. Standing at a new historical starting point, it must fully carry forward its fine academic traditions, further improve the disciplinary layout, build disciplinary clusters, promote academic innovation, strive to create a Marxist theoretical school with Chinese characteristics that takes Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its banner and soul, gather and cultivate a theoretical academic iron army loyal to Marxism and dedicated to the cause of Marxist research, constantly open up new horizons for the cause of Marxist theoretical research, and make new and greater contributions to comprehensively advancing the building of a strong country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through Chinese-path modernization.

高翔强调，坚持以马克思主义为指导，是20世纪中国历史、中国学术的必然选择，也是当代中国哲学社会科学区别于其他哲学社会科学的根本标志。必须始终坚持马克思主义在我国哲学社会科学领域的指导地位，坚持以科学的态度研究马克思主义，深入推进党的创新理论体系化学理化研究阐释，加快构建马克思主义理论学科基础理论体系；胸怀“国之大者”，坚持全球视野，站稳人民立场，弘扬理论联系实际的优良学风，不断提高服务党和国家事业发展大局的能力水平；坚决筑牢意识形态安全防线，巩固马克思主义理论研究和宣传平台，全面提升中国化马克思主义国际话语权。中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院是在党中央直接关怀下成立的全国首家马克思主义理论综合性研究机构，站在新的历史起点上，要充分发扬优良学术传统，进一步完善学科布局、构建学科集群、推进学术创新，努力打造以习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想为旗帜和灵魂、具有中国特色的马克思主义理论学派，凝聚和培养一支忠诚于马克思主义、献身于马克思主义研究事业的理论学术铁军，不断开创马克思主义理论研究事业新境界，为以中国式现代化全面推进强国建设、民族复兴伟业作出新的更大贡献。

Jin Minqing pointed out that Marxism is an open theory that is constantly developing. Only through localization can it take root, and only by keeping pace with the times can it be full of vitality. The more than 100-year struggle of the Communist Party of China is a process of continuously advancing the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times and achieving one theoretical leap after another. This magnificent historical process has not only produced rich theoretical innovation achievements but also accumulated scientific experience in theoretical innovation. These experiences include: must adhere to putting the people first and correctly handle the relationship between the Party’s theoretical innovation and the practice of the people; must adhere to confidence and self-reliance and correctly handle the relationship between independence and learning from others; must adhere to upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground and correctly handle the relationship between upholding and developing; must adhere to a problem-oriented approach and correctly handle the relationship between problems and doctrines; must adhere to a systems perspective and correctly handle the relationship among the various elements of theoretical innovation; must adhere to a global vision and correctly handle the relationship between China and the world. On the new journey of advancing the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, inheriting successful experiences, deepening understanding of the laws, and serving the Party’s theoretical innovation are the important responsibilities and glorious missions of the vast number of Marxist theoretical workers.

金民卿指出，马克思主义是不断发展的开放的理论，只有本土化才能落地生根，只有时代化才能充满生机。中国共产党一百多年的奋斗历程，就是不断推进马克思主义中国化时代化、实现一次又一次理论飞跃的过程。这一波澜壮阔的历史进程，不仅产生了丰富的理论创新成果，也积累了科学的理论创新经验。这些经验包括：必须坚持人民至上，正确处理党的理论创新和人民群众实践的关系；必须坚持自信自立，正确处理自主和借鉴的关系；必须坚持守正创新，正确处理坚持和发展的关系；必须坚持问题导向，正确处理问题和主义的关系；必须坚持系统观念，正确处理理论创新诸要素之间的关系；必须坚持胸怀天下，正确处理中国和世界的关系。在推进马克思主义中国化时代化的新征程上，传承成功经验，深化规律性认识，服务党的理论创新，是广大马克思主义理论工作者肩负的重要职责和光荣使命。

中国社会科学院原副院长、世界社会主义研究中心主任李慎明表示，在毛泽东同志诞辰132周年之际，回顾中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院20年来发展历程，共同探讨新时代马克思主义理论研究重大问题，具有特殊且重要的意义。习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想是马克思主义中国化时代化最新成果，习近平总书记提出的以人民为中心的发展思想同毛泽东同志所说的“为什么人的问题”一脉相承。“为什么人的问题”是哲学社会科学研究的根本性、原则性问题，哲学社会科学工作者应该时刻牢记这一问题，始终坚持为人民做学问，自觉将个人学术追求融入时代洪流。

Jin Nuo, convener of the Subject Evaluation Group for Marxist Theory and the Discipline of Party History and Party Building under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and former Party Secretary of Renmin University of China, stated that in 2005, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education made the major decision to adjust and add Marxist theory as a first-level discipline; in the same year, the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences was formally established, forming a strategic synergy between the two. Over the past 20 years, the discipline and the institute have advanced hand in hand, traversing a highly extraordinary journey and achieving remarkable results. Practice has proven that establishing Marxist theory as a first-level discipline and setting up specialized research institutions were far-sighted and visionary major strategies, which consolidated and strengthened the guiding role of Marxism in the field of philosophy and social sciences in China, powerfully promoted innovation in ideological theory and ideological construction, laid a solid foundation for building an independent knowledge system of China, and provided a strong guarantee for cultivating new generations capable of shouldering the mission of national rejuvenation.

国务院学位委员会马克思主义理论、中共党史党建学学科评议组召集人，中国人民大学原党委书记靳诺表示，2005年，国务院学位委员会、教育部作出了调整增设马克思主义理论一级学科的重大决策；同年，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院正式成立，二者形成了战略协同。20年来，学科与研究院携手共进，走过了一段极不平凡的历程，取得了令人瞩目的成绩。实践证明，设立马克思主义理论一级学科和建立专门研究机构是具有远见卓识的重大战略，巩固和加强了马克思主义在我国哲学社会科学领域的指导地位，有力推动了思想理论创新和意识形态建设，为构建中国自主知识体系奠定了坚实基础，为培养担当民族复兴大任的时代新人提供了有力保障。

Cui Weihang, President and Deputy Party Secretary of the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, stated that after 20 years of development, the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has become a national-level comprehensive research institution for Marxist theory with profound influence and broad leading capacity both domestically and internationally. All comrades of the Institute of Marxism will, under the strong leadership of the Party Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, continue to uphold the correct political direction and academic orientation, take serving General Secretary Xi Jinping and the Party Central Committee as the primary task to be implemented and grounded, carry through the spirit, attitude, and style of seeking truth from facts to the end, unite their hearts and minds, strive with vigor and achievement, and write an academic chapter worthy of this great era with even more outstanding results.

Luo Wendong, Party Secretary of the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered the concluding remarks of the conference. The conference featured a keynote speech session and four parallel sub-forums. Leading comrades from the functional departments of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the various units of the Academic Division of Marxist Studies, members of the Subject Evaluation Group for Marxist Theory and the Discipline of Party History and Party Building under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and experts and scholars in the field of Marxist theoretical research in China attended and participated in the discussions.
