Moving at the “Star’s” Behest: The Spiritual Predicament of College Students’ Online Astrology and Measures to Resolve It
The development of internet communication technology has broken the spatial and temporal limits of information dissemination, allowing more individualized modes of identification to flourish among the younger generation, profoundly altering college students’ cognitive styles and channels of information absorption. Astrology and tarot card divination, which rely on internet platforms as their transmission vehicle, have gradually gained popularity among youth groups. Taking Bilibili, a comprehensive video platform active among young users, as an example, the topic “tarot” (塔罗) has been viewed over 16 million times, with some interactive tarot card divination videos reaching as many as 3.921 million views; the topic “zodiac signs” (星座) has been viewed over 19 million times, with total views exceeding 200 million. Using Baidu Index for data analysis of population profiles, it can be seen that among netizens searching for the keyword “zodiac signs,” those aged 19 and under account for 13.77%, and those aged 20 to 29 account for 41.64%, indicating that youth, primarily represented by college students, are the main focus group for zodiac sign theories. Astrological culture, typified by zodiac signs and tarot cards, has become prevalent among college students via internet platforms. As a product of digital platforms that blend Western ideology with internet culture, it exhibits strong nihilistic and transcendental characteristics, representing an important manifestation of Western cultural infiltration. Through zodiac signs or tarot card divination, college students obtain a set of “reasonable explanations” for their current state or anxious issues, providing themselves with psychological comfort and spiritual support. This behavior rigidly attributes the causes of real-life circumstances to fate or divine will, guiding college students to deconstruct and reconstruct themselves in a fragmented manner, thereby leading to blind worship of online astrology and a belittling and weakening of their own abilities.
Driven by both technological development and globalization, “our country’s development has entered a period in which strategic opportunities and risks and challenges coexist, and uncertain and unpredictable factors are increasing, with various ‘black swan’ and ‘gray rhino’ events possibly occurring at any time.” [1]1 This quotation is from the Report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC (2022), which describes the current period as one of heightened uncertainty and risk. As an important vital force in advancing Chinese-path modernization, college students’ ideals and beliefs bear on national security and the rejuvenation of the nation; therefore, the ability to guard against and resolve risks to youth ideals and beliefs must be enhanced. The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC again emphasized “focusing on building a strong socialist culture, upholding the fundamental system of Marxism’s guiding position in the ideological domain, promoting cultural prosperity, and enriching the people’s cultural-ethical life.” [2]2 This is a reference to the resolution of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC (July 2024), which focused on further deepening reform and advancing Chinese modernization, including cultural policy. This is both an effective response to the current situation where the surge of social information flows challenges the formation and maintenance of individual beliefs, and an important deployment for consolidating college students’ Marxist faith and communist ideals and beliefs, and for cultivating “new-era good youth who have ideals, dare to take responsibility, can endure hardship, and are willing to struggle.” [3]3 This phrase, “new-era good youth” (新时代好青年), is a standard formulation from Party documents, notably the 20th National Congress report, outlining the desired qualities of young The education of college students’ ideals and beliefs is a crucial link in implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue and nurturing people [立德树人], and among it, strengthening Marxist faith is key to the education of college students’ ideals and beliefs.
I. Research Methods
This study adopts a social survey method primarily based on questionnaire surveys, supplemented by interviews, aiming to objectively analyze the multiple manifestations of online astrology obscuring college students’ ideals and beliefs, and to propose corresponding recommendations from the perspectives of college students themselves, higher education institutions, and society at large. First, using the questionnaire survey method, 2,100 college students (full-time undergraduates, junior college students, and master’s students) from some higher education institutions in Dalian were selected as survey subjects, with the focus of the investigation being “a survey of zodiac sign and tarot card divination among college students in online spaces.” The questionnaire consisted of 25 questions in total, of which the first 4 focused on the personal circumstances of the respondents, and the remaining 21 questions progressively examined college students’ level of cognition, emotional attitudes, and behavioral reasons regarding online astrology from three dimensions: cognition, emotion, and behavior (see Table 1).
A total of 2,110 questionnaires were distributed, and 2,100 valid questionnaires were recovered, with a validity rate of 95.2% for the recovered questionnaires. The gender structure of the survey sample was relatively balanced, with males accounting for 48.87% and females 51.13%. In terms of political affiliation, Communist Youth League members accounted for 37.86%, Party members 38.26%, non-party masses 20.58%, and members of democratic parties 3.28%. Regarding educational level distribution, undergraduates accounted for 95.24%, master’s students 3.86%, covering disciplines such as humanities, sciences, and engineering, which can accurately reflect the divination practices and behavioral motivations of the college student group (see Table 2).
Second, using the interview method, we further accurately grasped the real thoughts and psychological needs of college students engaging in zodiac sign and tarot card divination. Between October 2022 and September 2023, 20 college students with typical characteristics were selected for in-depth interviews, including 8 males and 12 females, aged 18 to 24. Respondents were coded using the format “serial number – gender,” with males using “M” as a suffix and females using “F” as a suffix (see Table 3).
II. Crisis Examination of Online Astrology’s Infiltration of College Students’ Ideals and Beliefs
Ideals and beliefs concern the future direction of college students’ development and serve as the ideological backbone for their growth and success. College students’ ideals and beliefs imply their expectations and pursuits regarding future careers, social roles, and personal values, profoundly influencing their value judgments and value choices. As the four important links in the formation and development of ideals and beliefs—cognition, emotion, will, and action—are closely interconnected, they profoundly affect the process of forming college students’ ideals and beliefs. Zodiac signs and tarot card divination, with their deceptive, transcendental, and covert nature, subtly infiltrate college students’ daily ideological dynamics, easily fostering worship of and belief in superhuman forces among college students whose worldviews are not yet fully formed, enhancing their psychological dependence on “foreseeing the future” and gradually weakening their intrinsic drive for rational thought. Online astrology not only weakens college students’ spirit of self-reflection and exploration at the emotional-attitudinal level but also intensifies their dependence on an illusory future, dismantling their pursuit of a real and better future at the practical level. Through rhetorical guidance, it suggests to college students the illusion of “feeling the same way,” thereby leading to deviations in their value judgments and value choices, and exposing their ideals and beliefs to the risk of “soft-bone disease.” [4]4 The phrase “jointing and booting” (拔节育穗) is a metaphor from agriculture, referring to the growth stages of grain crops; here it is used figuratively to describe the critical developmental period of college students.
(I) Cognitive Dimension: Constructing the Self through Labeling Symbols
Cognition is an important prerequisite for the formation of ideals and beliefs, bearing on the future direction of practice in terms of “belief” and “action.” College students, using zodiac signs and tarot card divination tinged with occult overtones, examine themselves and look to the future with a strong individualism. In this process, through the labeled symbols provided by zodiac signs and tarot card divination, students understand their own and others’ personalities, behaviors, and destinies, and thereby cognize and position themselves. First, within the discourse system of zodiac signs and tarot card divination, students define themselves with abstract, one-sided language, which both dissolves their own uniqueness and fosters a fragmented mode of thinking. When asked, “Would you deliberately do something because of advice from zodiac signs or tarot card divination?” 7.75% of respondents said yes, and 50.78% said sometimes. In addition, 53.24% of respondents agreed that “after understanding one’s fortune and other aspects, one can play to strengths and avoid weaknesses”; 40.78% of respondents said that “since coming into contact with zodiac sign and tarot card tests and learning their divination results, they have become more convinced that zodiac signs and tarot cards can test fortune.” Zodiac signs and tarot card divination, using abstract and vague descriptions as personality templates, cause the audience, under the inducement of fuzzy definitions, to actively classify themselves into different types of “cocoons.” College students firmly believe in the clever wording of zodiac signs and tarot card divination, internalize abstract statements about their own personalities, and mold themselves into the conceptualized self depicted by zodiac definitions, hoping in this way to find a relatively clear self-positioning and personality construction for themselves. Second, tarot cards are often regarded by diviners as a magical key to exploring the individual’s inner world. Relying on tarot cards, students may gain a deeper understanding of their own emotions, wishes, and potential motives, thereby influencing their cognition of the world. When asked whether zodiac signs and tarot card divination affect decision-making, 50.78% of respondents believed that zodiac signs and tarot card divination sometimes affect decision-making, and 7.75% believed that they affect decision-making. Once students find points of resonance similar to themselves in zodiac concepts or tarot card divination, they accordingly believe that they have indeed glimpsed their own future fortunes from zodiac signs and tarot card divination, thereby misleading their judgment and decisions. Third, students who worship zodiac signs and tarot card divination also use them to display individuality and seek like-minded peers, labeling themselves. For example, a person who considers themselves a “Leo” may accept Leo traits such as confidence and strong leadership as self-labels. Zodiac signs and tarot cards, with psychologically suggestive positive discourse, dissolve students’ psychological defenses and create the illusion of group belonging and spiritual resonance. Labeled linguistic symbols are both a mode of verbal expression that captures typical characteristics, simplifying the complexity and uncertainty of cognition by grasping commonalities, and a mode of communication within a group or circle, reflecting the group’s shared thinking and quickly narrowing the distance in communication. Zodiac signs and tarot card divination skillfully use labeled linguistic symbols as a communication medium, guiding student believers to achieve self-construction in a fragmented and stereotyped form.
(2) Emotional Dimension: Weakening Scientific Spirit through Enchanted Worship
Zodiac signs and tarot cards exert complex and multidimensional effects on college students’ ideals and beliefs at the emotional level. By providing emotional support through covert means, they subtly weaken students’ scientific spirit, becoming a hotbed for blind worship of superhuman forces. Scientific spirit and scientific methods are important qualities that college students should possess, and are the spiritual driving force for creating a better life. However, indulgence in zodiac signs and tarot card divination is a “superstition” about the illusory and transcendent, a departure by this advanced group from its own essence, sending it back into the shackles of enchantment. First, the college stage is the period of jointing and booting in life [n4]; students harbor confusion in various aspects such as career planning, academic development, and interpersonal relationships. Zodiac signs and tarot card divination seize this opportunity, in the name of predicting the future, to provide students with a method for alleviating the sense of the unknown and countering risk anxiety, becoming a main tool for exploring and shaping the future, thereby narrowing the possibilities and diversity of students’ meeting challenges and expanding their futures. Second, students face heavy academic, study, and employment pressures. Driven by multiple pressures, they use zodiac signs and tarot card divination as a medium to seek psychological comfort, finding meaning and experiential value for themselves in a fast-paced life. The personality traits and behavioral tendencies described by zodiac signs help students gain a sense of being understood, thereby generating emotional identification. This sense of identification prompts students to attribute their life realities—from their future development down to the day’s fortune—to ordinary yet mysterious divinatory forces, causing them, in a critical period when they should be tempering their will and forging their character, both to neglect self-analysis and to fail to draw lessons from practice. Finally, students are in a temporal-spatial field where they leave the shelter of their original families to study and live alone. When encountering daily problems or life confusions, they find it difficult to communicate promptly and effectively with their parents or find ways to resolve issues. This lag or absence in communication also leads to the inability of some students’ negative emotions to be promptly relieved, resulting in a situation where some students may overly rely on zodiac signs and tarot cards to guide their emotions and decisions, which can easily affect their independent thinking about ideals and beliefs and the maturation of self-cognition. When asked, “What do you think are the influencing factors that lead more and more people to believe in zodiac sign and tarot card tests and pay attention to them?” the factor “existence of dependence, luck, curiosity, and herd mentality” scored an average of 3.51. The operating principle of zodiac signs and tarot card divination is to make believers deeply convinced of vague, general summaries, thereby obtaining psychological comfort and achieving a certain degree of stress relief. In this mutual struggle, zodiac signs and tarot cards may become a way for students to emotionally invest, helping them escape real problems. However, excessive reliance may lead students to neglect practical action and real challenges, thereby affecting the realization of ideals and beliefs. Faced with the ambiguous results of zodiac signs and tarot card divination, students not only find it difficult to discern truth from falsehood with a critical eye but also spontaneously shroud them in a veil of mysticism, blindly believing and following the divination results, lacking a strong reflection on the divination conclusions and real life.
(3) Behavioral Dimension: Deconstructing Practice through Transcendent Belief
The operational logic of superstitious belief is to “follow one’s own main line of faith,” constructing for its adherents a theoretical system that exerts influence on the composition and operation of the universe, the changes and development of the world, and individual circumstances. This naturally becomes an important way for college students to attribute their personal experiences and everything around them. As a transcendental belief, the mysterious forces of zodiac signs and tarot card divination cannot be verified by empirical facts; they exist in a suspended state at the practical level. In the process of divination practice, they presuppose the practical outcomes of the subject, drawing conclusions in a manner that cannot be corroborated by scientific laws, thereby negating the subject’s practical agency. This results in the deconstruction of the methodology of dialectical materialism, producing complex and insidious harms. On the one hand, zodiac signs and tarot card divination themselves have a strong psychological suggestive effect, easily causing a crisis of faith among college students and hindering the firming of their ideals and convictions. “When faced with difficult decisions, I choose to refer to the information given by zodiac signs and tarot card divination (05-M).” “Zodiac signs and tarot card divination can, to some extent, provide everyone with some ‘spiritual support,’ giving us some guidance for action (20-F).” In interviews, most respondents indicated that when encountering difficulties, although they trust their own strength, they also refer to the opinions given by divination. Ancient astrology, cloaked in a utilitarian guise, becomes a discourse system rich in mystical overtones, focusing on vague narratives of individual unique problems, thereby neglecting the interpretation and generalization of the power of organizations and teams. Precisely because of the influence of this feudal dregs discourse system, some college students easily identify with distorted discourses, attributing subjective creativity and effort to esoteric words, thus severing the close connection between the collective and the individual, giving rise to some college students with traits of refined egoism. On the other hand, zodiac signs and tarot cards may affect college students’ behavioral patterns; for example, certain zodiac signs are considered more inclined toward teamwork, which may influence their performance in team projects. “Paying attention to zodiac signs does affect my daily life. For instance, if the zodiac says my lucky color today is orange, and I have something particularly important that day, I will deliberately put on an orange item of clothing, and it turns out to be quite effective. Another example: I am a Cancer, so I really like water signs. If I meet someone of a water sign, I will subconsciously give them extra points in my mind (13-F).” Zodiac signs and tarot card divination often use delicate language that can justify itself, exhibiting a “placebo effect.” The sense of identification when results are accurate is infinitely amplified, while the sense of disappointment when results are inaccurate is easily overlooked by people. Based on this, some college students develop a recognition and close bond with zodiac signs and tarot card divination at a spiritual level, akin to kinship. 80% of surveyed students indicated that after viewing the analysis of divination predictions, they unconsciously accept the psychological suggestions conveyed to them. This suggestion has a strong sense of immersion, likely causing the subject’s behavior to develop according to the predicted results, showing a strong coupling between the two, whereby behavioral outcomes become more consistent with the predictions. When college students frequently participate in zodiac sign and tarot card divination and repeatedly receive positive feedback, they become more convinced that this behavior can correctly guide their practice. Over time, this dependency tendency easily distorts college students’ originally correct worldview, outlook on life, and values. It not only leads to the neglect of individual personality development and a loss of ideals and convictions but also represents a form of alienation between the individual and self-development.
III. An Analysis of the Reasons for Online Astrology’s Intervention in College Students’ Ideals and Convictions
The process of integrating the socialist market economy into globalization is deepening day by day, accompanied by the influx of various cultural trends and the penetration of diverse information. In the era of network information technology, big data and new media have fueled this trend. The interweaving and coexistence of various ideologies may weaken college students’ ideals and convictions, placing their value judgments and value choices in a new situation. Individual college students who have not yet developed rational judgment abilities are highly susceptible to confusion in mainstream value judgments when faced with a wealth of diverse and mixed information. Increasingly fierce social competition not only causes a sharp rise in college students’ psychological pressure but also triggers an imbalance between the natural rhythm of individual time and social time. Entrusting one’s feelings to zodiac signs and tarot card divination is a typical manifestation of college students falling into a predicament of value judgment. Regarding why divination is popular, academia has already provided relevant theoretical explanations from a psychological perspective, such as the Barnum effect and survivorship bias. However, compared to why divination is popular, more attention should be paid to the reasons why college students favor divination, understanding their psychological state and behavioral motivations from the perspective of the subject.
(I) The Form of Divination: Identity Construction That Aligns with Self-Awareness
Generation Z, also known as the internet generation, refers to the young population born between 1995 and 2009. In terms of material conditions, this group has experienced the rapid development of China’s economy since the 1990s, enjoying material abundance. In terms of emotional needs, Generation Z has a relatively high proportion of only children, relying on the internet to seek self-awareness and identity. In terms of technological conditions, Generation Z has been fully internetized since adolescence, widely influenced by internet culture. Because the material conditions during their growth period are more abundant than those of previous generations, Generation Z college students place greater emphasis on higher-level spiritual needs. They have a strong need for self-constructed identity, pursuing interest-based circles, emotional appeals, and self-realization. Online astrology happens to align with college students’ conscious pursuit of identity construction. In terms of communication forms, short videos about divination on platforms such as bilibili and Douyin are generally 3–5 minutes long, and based on different card group interpretations, viewers can jump directly to the corresponding playback segment, perfectly matching college students’ short-video browsing habits. In terms of aesthetic forms, zodiac signs and tarot cards have different card face patterns, and when combined with other art forms, they can generate various card styles, showcasing the unique aesthetic taste of this group. In terms of social forms, topics centered on zodiac signs and tarot card divination can extend both online and offline, becoming a focal point of communication among college students. Zodiac signs and tarot card divination, originally rooted in the medieval religious discourse system, have skillfully “transformed” through their vague and flexible expressions into an extension and expression of individual personality, group relationships, and emotional states in modern society. College students adjust their behavior around the personality templates and choice tendencies defined by zodiac signs and tarot cards, thereby unconsciously being constrained by the expectations and frameworks shaped by the divination system in the process of shaping their personality and daily interactions. This leads to an artificial fragmentation in their self-cognition and social interactions. On the one hand, the content of online tarot divination often sparks heated discussions in the comment sections of videos, dividing diviners into three or four groups to follow the clues, which can evoke group resonance and provide a sense of social presence and identity. On the other hand, in offline social interactions, zodiac signs and tarot card divination have also become one of the preferred topics for college students to break the ice and make small talk, helping to quickly narrow the psychological distance between individual college students. The development of internet technology has quietly changed traditional social interaction patterns, and the blurred media landscape of the virtual and real subtly organizes and influences college students’ behavioral interaction patterns. Through social topics centered on zodiac signs and tarot card divination, individual self-awareness is fully manifested. As an emerging representative of online subculture, zodiac signs and tarot card divination embody the unique social significance among college student groups.

The American scholar Katz proposed the uses and gratifications theory, emphasizing that people use media to satisfy certain of their own needs. The widespread popularity of星座 and tarot divination among college students lies in the fact that it meets their social needs for self-identity construction, creating a unique self-spectacle in the digital social field. On the one hand, the self-spectacle originates from interpersonal interaction in social communication. “The production of ideas, concepts, and consciousness is initially directly interwoven with people’s material activities, with their material intercourse, and with the language of real life.” [6]6 Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, *The German Ideology* (1845–1846). College students’ self-understanding and self-presentation are generated and developed through the interaction of subject and object in social communication; they are a direct reflection of the social reality and cultural environment in which they live, embodying the interweaving and permeation of self and others. As a new form of youth subculture,星座 and tarot divination are flourishing on the internet. College students use peer-group communication to perfect their identity labels of chasing fashion and fitting in with trends. On the other hand, the self-spectacle is a product of people’s social attributes. As the “looking-glass self,” the individual imagines the image of the self in the eyes of others and imagines others’ judgment of that image, thereby forming a certain self-feeling. College students, still in their youth, crave recognition and praise from others in social interaction.星座 and tarot divination can help them alleviate the anxiety of being under others’ gaze and the elusive emotional attitudes of others, while also enabling them to build a trendy, avant-garde social persona based on it. In social interaction mediated by social media,星座 and tarot divination have become hot new topics. College students gain satisfaction both from using the medium itself and from the context in which they use the medium, promoting positive expectations toward divinatory behavior.
(2) The Content of Divination: Social Symbols That Showcase Aesthetic Taste
In the era of digital media, the social sphere of college students has already broken through the boundaries of reality and extended to the internet. The social function of the interweaving of the virtual network and the real world is increasingly reshaping the social paradigms and interaction modes of young college students in the new era.星座 and tarot divination are no longer limited to traditional offline divination models; instead, they combine with short videos and big data, using platforms such as WeChat public accounts, Xiaohongshu, and Douyin as network carriers, transforming into online astrology and giving rise to a series of new social topics. As one of the social topics of contemporary young people, online astrology is “a continuation of social modes and has now become a new type of social channel.” In the survey, when asked “Why do you use星座 or tarot divination?”, 24.47% of respondents explicitly stated “to expand my social circle and find social topics.”星座 and tarot divination expand the topics and methods of social interaction. The young college students who are the audience like, repost, and comment on content related to星座 and tarot divination on the internet. This behavior, seemingly an independent act based on individual will, is essentially a form of social interaction with social attributes, extending college students’ social field from reality to cyberspace. Taking星座 divination as an example, various星座 bloggers on the internet offer different personality interpretations and fortune analyses for different星座, even detailed to the year, month, week, and day—analytical predictions at different time units—and different星座 have different personalities: water signs are delicate, fire signs are passionate, air signs are changeable. In the process of receiving this information, college students craft their social image, shape their aesthetic taste, and establish virtual social relationships that fit their own personalities and interests. The behavior of星座 and tarot divination is essentially a way for college students to relieve anxiety, release pressure, and express themselves. Through this subcultural behavior of星座 and tarot, college students shape themselves, showcase their individuality, and achieve the goal of integrating into the group by finding common topics, thereby escaping the insecurity of being游离 [7]7 游离 (yóulí): literally “drifting away”; here it means being detached or alienated from a group. outside the group.
Online astrology, as a social symbol for college students to showcase their aesthetic taste, is more like an “online pass” for young people’s virtual communication space, unconsciously revealing college students’ tendency toward group division. Only by mastering this prevalent social symbol can college students better integrate into the group, alleviate the anxiety of identity recognition, and prove their existence to others. On the one hand, college students achieve their own discourse production and emotional communication through discourse related to online astrology. Emotional experience is an important aspect of the mode of belief; any belief necessarily involves emotional experience toward the object of belief. On the other hand, college students use these popular social symbols to display their identity characteristics, striving to highlight their individuality and unique existence. The German-born scholar Han Byung-Chul argues: “The main function of ‘friends’ in social networks is to enhance the individual’s narcissistic self-perception. They form a group of applauding spectators, providing attention to the self, while the self displays itself like a commodity.” [8]8 Han Byung-Chul, *The Agony of Eros* (2012) or a related work; the quote reflects his critique of narcissism in digital sociality. In the context of “cyber belief,” the purpose of college students’ self-existence is no longer to connect with others; on the contrary, the purpose of interaction between individuals is merely self-display and the confirmation of self-worth. The popularity of online astrology has become a code-decoding unique to the youth group of college students, used to confirm each other’s social identities, thereby achieving shared meaning and emotional connection. Online astrology disguises itself in the daily life of college students with a cloak close to youth life. It appears to be a subculture of online entertainment and pastime, but in reality, it is a concentrated expression of the interweaving of multiple social trends such as neoliberalism, nihilism, and modern cynicism. After these social trends, disguised as trendy public opinion and deliberately catering to the psychology of youth groups, are internally combined with entertainment cultures like星座 and tarot divination, the behavior of online astrology is no longer a pastime seeking comfort but becomes a value expression containing political views and ideological concepts, rewriting the life content and mode of existence of college students.
(3) The Purpose of Divination: A Buffer Channel for Relieving Psychological Pressure
In a rapidly changing social and cultural environment, the emotion of time anxiety has swept through individual life and has already become a quite representative social mentality in contemporary China. Meritocracy defines efficiency and diligence as the secrets of success, and the tendency toward social involution [9]9 内卷 (nèijuǎn): “involution,” a term widely used in contemporary Chinese discourse to describe intense, zero-sum competition within a system that yields diminishing returns for individuals. is obvious. Han Byung-Chul argues, “Contemporary society has shifted from a disciplinary society to an achievement society… the excess of work and performance is increasingly severe, until it develops into self-exploitation.” [10]10 Han Byung-Chul, *The Burnout Society* (2010). Driven by a belief in self-improvement, social subjects willingly exploit themselves. College students growing up in this cultural atmosphere are also unconsciously driven by this motivation, falling into the vortex of involution. College students’ divination presents a situation of “being fascinated but not believing.” Seeking星座 and tarot divination mixes multiple psychological states of young people such as anxiety, longing, confusion, and entanglement, and also points to the real dilemmas and existential circumstances of contemporary young people in the era of transformation. College students, who are in the period of “sprouting and heading,” [11]11 拔节育穗期 (bájié yùsuì qī): an agricultural metaphor meaning the “jointing and heading stage” of grain crops, used in Chinese political discourse to describe a critical period of growth and formation in young people’s development. have not had their Marxist ideals and beliefs tested by rigorous practice, and are more easily attracted to illusory divinatory rhetoric, choosing to place their hopes in ethereal beliefs in fate to seek spiritual sustenance and psychological comfort. The negative stress reactions accompanying fierce social competition are an important reason for college students to turn to beliefs in fate for psychological comfort, using illusory beliefs to resolve the spiritual pain suffered in reality. College students should uphold the scientific spirit and hold a negative attitude toward星座 and tarot divination. However, survey facts show that most college students have varying degrees of enthusiasm for星座 and tarot divination. “Tarot cards and星座 have played a major role in regulating my own mindset; many of their divinatory analyses make me face many difficulties in life positively. (12-F)” Time anxiety has become a collective emotion among college students. To adjust the individual’s natural rhythm of time and rebalance it with social time, college students choose to use星座 and tarot divination as a medium, releasing inner pressure through the form of foreknowledge and reconciling the uncertainty about the future.
Time gradually imprints the stamp of rules and order on people’s lives, work, and study, thereby triggering individuals’ anxiety over time. Under the influence of science and technology, time is no longer merely a measure for individuals to record the passage of time and arrange their own behavior; it is also closely integrated with mechanical devices, evolving into instrumental rationality and becoming a performance tool for capital to measure efficiency. College students aspire to use time efficiently and realize their life ideals, which in turn intensifies their inner anxiety over time, making it difficult for them to tolerate the waste of time. Online astrology simplifies the time-consuming and procedurally cumbersome traditional horoscope and tarot card divination into online divination, not only streamlining the process, saving time and effort, but also transcending the limitations of time and space, allowing believers to obtain divination results more quickly. Online astrology both hits upon college students’ anxiety over time and effectively releases their pressure from involution [n12]. This stems not only from the high intensity of competition but also from their belief that high-intensity personal effort is not necessarily linked to greater life achievements, leading them to turn to cathartic passive resistance. Under the pressure of an involution society, college students need normal channels for stress relief and healing to obtain spiritual comfort. Online astrology, represented by horoscopes and tarot cards, has emerged as a “substitute” in the absence of some kind of stress-relief buffer mechanism. The vast majority of college students surveyed also clearly stated that they are well aware that turning to the occult is not the best choice, nor will it necessarily yield definite answers; they simply hope to obtain a warm comfort amid pressure and struggle, and to have the motivation to continue striving.
IV. Strategies for the New Era to Dispel the Confusion in College Students’ Ideals and Beliefs
Survey research has found that online astrology, with its simple and fast format, content that fits the daily lives of college students, and its ability to alleviate anxiety, meets college students’ social and emotional needs to a certain extent. College students use horoscope and tarot card divination to understand themselves, seeking and determining the answer to “who I am”; to communicate with peers, build intimate relationships, and express their aspirations and pursuits for a better life. It is worth noting that college students, whose worldview, outlook on life, and values are not yet mature, find it difficult to properly grasp the direction and limits of horoscope and tarot card divination. They are prone to losing themselves in mystical forces, developing risks such as underestimating the active role of practice or even wavering in their Marxist faith. In view of this, the subcultural phenomenon of horoscope and tarot card divination prevalent among college students urgently requires high attention and sustained focus. It is necessary to constantly monitor the development trends of this phenomenon and strengthen directional guidance; moreover, it is essential to deeply reflect on the reasons for the emergence of this phenomenon, exert effort from the source, and strengthen atheist propaganda and education as well as education on ideals and beliefs for college students, so as to achieve the “disenchantment” and “unveiling” of horoscope and tarot card divination.
(I) Improving the Whole-Chain Propaganda and Education on Atheism
Atheism, as the theoretical cornerstone and important foundation of Marxism, and its propaganda and education work are important pathways for strengthening college students’ Marxist faith and ideals and beliefs. The reason college students are trapped in the spiritual predicament of online astrology lies in the confusion of their ideals and beliefs, specifically manifested in a weak atheist worldview. Therefore, it is necessary to correct college students’ erroneous perceptions of subcultures such as horoscope and tarot card divination. On the basis of implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education [n13], Marxist materialism and atheist education should be strengthened [n14], and atheist propaganda and education should be organically integrated into the teaching content of ideological and political theory courses, achieving sustained effort and continuous improvement across the entire chain and all links of atheist propaganda and education. As the main channel for cultivating the soul, enlightening the mind, and nourishing the heart, college ideological and political courses cover all grades. Integrating their teaching content with atheist propaganda and education in a gradual and focused manner, according to the different stages, is a necessary measure that follows the laws of education. In the course “Ideological Morality and Rule of Law,” the spiritual core of Marxist atheism can be integrated. For example, in conjunction with the content of Chapter 1, “Understanding the True Meaning of Life, Grasping the Direction of Life,” relevant topics can be set to refute the passive and escapist attitude contained in theism, focusing on guiding students to fasten the first button of life [n15] at the beginning of college, and to paint a brilliant life through hard work. In the course “Outline of Modern Chinese History,” the basic process of adapting Marxist atheism to the Chinese context can be integrated, introducing the important principles and strategies of the Communist Party of China regarding atheist propaganda and education, as well as the significant achievements in leading the people to eradicate feudal superstition during the revolutionary process. In the course “Basic Principles of Marxism,” while emphasizing dialectical materialism and historical materialism, the stance, viewpoints, and methods of Marxist atheism should be integrated. Specifically, based on knowledge points such as “idealism and materialism” and “social consciousness,” discussions can be expanded on the essence, functions, and social roots of religion, helping college students analyze the illusory nature of modern theism such as online astrology, and piercing the spiritual fog of theism with a firm Marxist faith. In the course “Introduction to Mao Zedong Thought and the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,” the theoretical policies on religion and atheism within the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics can be further elaborated, helping college students clarify the paradox between online astrology and the policy of freedom of religious belief. The course “Introduction to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” can focus on content related to “building socialist culture with Chinese characteristics,” enabling college students to understand that strengthening research and propaganda and education on scientific atheism is an important component of enhancing socialist ideology. In the course “Current Affairs and Policies,” in conjunction with the actual situation of college students’ attention to horoscope and tarot card divination, the atheist knowledge and ideological risks contained therein can be thoroughly interpreted, raising this group’s vigilance against theism such as online astrology. Furthermore, in the ideological and political course teaching at the graduate level, atheist propaganda and education should also be deepened, promoting the coherence and integration of its teaching objectives and educational effects, so that college students increasingly firmly embrace Marxist materialism and atheism. Marxist atheism, as the philosophical foundation of the core value system of socialism, emphasizes spiritual health, optimism in life, and interpersonal harmony. It is not only a materialism that opposes idealism and criticizes theism, but also manifests a positive attitude towards life in the pursuit of a better life. Promoting its deep, thorough, and practical integration into the ideological and political classroom is a targeted and effective strategy to alleviate the current situation where college students use online astrology to seek themselves, express their identity, and relieve stress.
(II) Strengthening the Subjectivity of College Students’ Ideals and Beliefs
Establishing a scientific and correct faith is an inevitable requirement for contemporary college students to grow and develop. Only by firmly believing in Marxism, adhering to dialectical rational thinking while promoting the scientific spirit of practice, can college students truly become builders and successors of the cause of a great modern socialist country. In the process of ideal and belief education, strengthening the subjectivity of college students essentially means stimulating their subjective initiative, enhancing the firmness of their ideals and beliefs by cultivating their rational thinking. The current education on ideals and beliefs for college students urgently needs to reverse its inadequacies and inefficiencies through the strengthening of subjectivity. It is necessary to respect the characteristics of ideal and belief education and unify it with the inner requirements of college students’ spiritual development, so that it becomes practical and effective. Enhancing the subjectivity of college students’ ideals and beliefs requires not only promoting disenchantment at the knowledge level and the unveiling of value judgments, but also achieving the internalization of Marxism in their minds and hearts. Education on ideals and beliefs must consolidate its theoretical foundation and arm youth with the Party’s scientific theories. As subjects of faith, college students must strengthen the Marxist atheist worldview, clearly recognize the paralyzing and pseudo-scientific nature of zodiac and tarot card divination, and achieve disenchantment with them. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that understanding truth, mastering truth, believing in truth, and defending truth are the spiritual prerequisites for firming up ideals and beliefs. The reason college students are confused by zodiac and tarot card divination is that they cannot view this chaos scientifically and rationally. In response, Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era should be taken as the guide, and the Party’s scientific theories as the directional compass, to help college students arm their minds with truth and guide their practice. College students should proceed from a scientific perspective, adhere to Marxist atheism, correctly understand the cultural origins of zodiac phenomena and tarot divination, and recognize that this cultural phenomenon is merely a belief in fate arising from ignorance in the course of human historical development, not an absolute truth capable of predicting the future or defining personality. Young people with lofty ideals and firm beliefs are an invincible driving force for a country and a nation. College students must uphold the scientific spirit, consciously guide themselves with dialectical materialism, and clearly understand the spiritual guidance and inherent power of Marxist faith. College students’ understanding of Marxist faith should be expressed both at the theoretical level, through intellectual exposition, and at the practical level, with lofty faith as the value orientation. As an important part of subculture, zodiac and tarot card divination are deceptive and serve as cultural tools for Western ideological invasion. The fatalistic views they transmit deny the Marxist view of practice and obliterate the agency of the practical subject; in the final analysis, they are variants of historical nihilism and idealism. Strengthening the subjectivity of college students’ ideals and beliefs is a long-term endeavor. College students must maintain a cautious and self-disciplined heart, constantly “sweep clean” their faith emotions, faith will, and faith behavior, achieving a spotless state in their own ideals and beliefs.
(3) Strengthening the Construction of Ideal and Belief Education in Higher Education Institutions
As the primary task of ideological and political education in higher education institutions, ideal and belief education involves multiple aspects and levels, including public opinion management, learning atmosphere, and campus culture. As General Secretary Xi Jinping stated, the establishment of ideals and beliefs is a rational choice, not a momentary impulse; simple feelings are far from sufficient, and must be supported by profound theoretical faith; otherwise, any disturbance can cause wavering. In the process of improving the construction of ideal and belief education in higher education institutions, we should adhere to Marxism as the guiding ideology, balance theoretical indoctrination with practical guidance, emphasize the combination of cultural cultivation and scientific propaganda, and strive to achieve dual development in ideological leadership and behavioral guidance, enabling students to consciously discard the decadent ideas contained in zodiac and tarot card divination and avoid the erosion and poisoning of harmful social trends. Higher education institutions should implement the individualized and life-oriented concept of atheist propaganda and education, strengthen spiritual and cultural guidance, help college students establish a positive and enterprising attitude toward life, and avoid large psychological gaps caused by the disparity between reality and ideals. General Secretary Xi Jinping encouraged young people to “be diligent in learning, keen on seeking knowledge, focus on internalizing what they have learned into their hearts, form their own opinions, and while specializing in one field, also care about the country, the people, and the world, learning to assume social responsibility.” Faced with academic and employment pressures, college students with little life experience lack psychological preparation and inevitably feel intimidated; this is also an important reason for the prevalence of the “zodiac and tarot card craze” on campus. Based on this, higher education institutions should not simply criticize or blame students for being trapped in the ideological predicament of nihilism and superstition, but should always care for and protect students’ growth, providing technical guidance and preventive training for college students to release psychological pressure. Higher education institutions should build a community for ideal and belief education, fully leveraging collaborative forces in educating people. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized: “We must make good use of the ‘grand
(4) Creating a favorable educational atmosphere for ideals and beliefs
The ideals and beliefs of college students are closely related to the educational environment in which they are immersed. A favorable environment for ideals and beliefs education helps to guide them, through a process of osmosis, to forge a solid foundation of ideals and beliefs and to forge ahead courageously amid complex risks and challenges. “The ideals and beliefs of young people concern the future of the nation.” [16]16 Xi Jinping, “Speech at a Symposium with Teachers and Students of Peking University,” May 2, 2018. The whole of society should work together to create a favorable atmosphere for ideals and beliefs education, vigorously promote the two major spiritual civilizational guides of Marxist faith education and the core socialist values, integrate ideals and beliefs education with the comprehensive development of college students, and jointly guide them to form refined aesthetic tastes, pursue a healthy spiritual life, and grow into a new generation of good young people with ideals, the courage to take responsibility, the ability to endure hardship, and the willingness to strive. Adhering to the core socialist values to guide the trend of social thought in the New Era and consolidating the Marxist faith will ensure that we do not lose our direction or our foundation. The core socialist values are both the value condensation of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the concentrated embodiment of the contemporary Chinese spirit, embodying the common value pursuits of all the people. Their twenty-four-character essence [17]17 The core socialist values are condensed into twelve terms (24 characters in Chinese): prosperity, democracy, civility, harmony; freedom, equality, justice, rule of law; patriotism, dedication, integrity, friendship. outlines in a concise manner the moral requirements and practical norms for Chinese youth. The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC pointed out: “We will develop advanced socialist culture with the core socialist values as the guide.” [18]18 Xi Jinping, “Hold High the Great Banner of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and Strive in Unity to Build a Modern Socialist Country in All Respects – Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,” October 16, 2022. Zodiac signs and tarot card divination, under the guise of subculture, explore meaning and interpret fortune, and their implicit Western ideology and undesirable social trends are embedded in the behavioral process and outcome orientation of divination. On the one hand, in real life, society should vigorously promote the guiding role of the core socialist values, help college students resist the invasion of backward social trends, and strengthen their Marxist faith and atheist outlook, so that when facing such infiltration of undesirable ideology and culture, they can keep their eyes clear, withstand the test, and resist temptation. On the other hand, in cyberspace, college students, as digital natives, have their daily lives and ideological dynamics closely related to internet information. Creating a clean and upright cyberspace helps to subtly guide college students to strengthen their ideals and beliefs. Trapped in the information cocoon created by algorithmic recommendations, once college students click on a link related to zodiac signs or tarot card divination, similar pushes will flood in, causing them to sink deeper and deeper. Furthermore, “many people, especially young people, basically do not watch mainstream media; most of their information is obtained from the internet. This fact must be faced.” [19]19 Xi Jinping, “Speech at the Forum on Work Related to the Internet and Information Technology,” April 19, 2016. In response, we should actively grasp and apply the laws of online communication, resolve the blocking effects brought by information cocoons, and strive to present more positive mainstream voices and healthy advanced culture in the online vision of college students. We should extend the propaganda and education of atheism into online services and online culture, occupy the high ground of the internet with the core socialist values, purify the online environment with communist ideals, help college students resist the invasion of various decadent ideologies and cultures, and strengthen their scientific Marxist faith.
V. Conclusion
Limited by space, this article cannot fully and accurately reflect the actual situation, but it can still offer a glimpse of the whole, allowing us to understand the emotional attitudes and behavioral choices of college students in the New Era regarding zodiac signs and tarot card divination. The research found that many college students are fascinated by but do not believe in zodiac signs and tarot card divination, treating them as daily pastimes. They are clearly aware that zodiac signs or tarot cards cannot accurately predict the future, yet they yearn to use the guidance of fate to pay attention to their inner feelings. The purpose of their divination is to dispel the uncertainty and insecurity about the future. Living in an involution society, [20]20 “Involution” (内卷, *neijuan*) refers to a state of intense, zero-sum competition where individuals must expend ever-increasing effort just to maintain their position, without any corresponding improvement in outcomes. college students face fierce competition between themselves and others, which brings tremendous psychological pressure. College students are both doubtful about whether they can properly anticipate and respond to changes in the external world and worried that they cannot adapt to the accelerating pace of society, instead falling into a state of lagging development. College students fear losing themselves in the wave of competition and becoming “one-dimensional men” driven by capital. [21]21 A reference to Herbert Marcuse’s *One-Dimensional Man* (1964), which critiques advanced industrial society for producing individuals incapable of critical thought or resistance. When the normal developmental desires of college students are difficult to satisfy for a long time, they will develop strong feelings of frustration and psychological burden, and therefore use the power of the occult to relieve their growing pains. Although college students can consciously analyze the emotional coloring and value tendencies inherent in online astrology, they should not let their guard down about this phenomenon, simply considering it a subcultural phenomenon prevalent among college students. College students use zodiac signs and tarot card divination as spiritual sustenance, seeking a psychological balance point for themselves in the fierce competitive arena, trying to resolve the conflict between personal development and social reality. However, “all social life is in essence practical.” [22]22 Karl Marx, “Theses on Feuerbach” (1845), Thesis VIII. The divinatory interpretations given by tarot cards or zodiac signs are nothing but illusions of flowers in a mirror or the moon’s reflection on water. Each generation has its own Long March. [23]23 A common Chinese political slogan, derived from Xi Jinping’s 2016 speech commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Long March, meaning each generation faces its own historical mission and challenges. This kind of escapist coping method is not only unhelpful for college students to correctly exert their subjective initiative, overcome the complex difficulties on the path of growth and talent, and find a way to break through the dilemmas of growth under the New Era and new challenges, but it also makes them more easily exploited by those with ulterior motives, who use undesirable Western social trends to shake college students’ ideals, beliefs, and Marxist faith. In view of this, it is necessary to promote the coordinated efforts of college students themselves, higher education institutions, and society, guiding college students to clearly distinguish social trends, strengthen their Marxist faith, the common ideal of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the lofty ideal of communism, adhere to rational thinking, be pragmatic and steadfast, and illuminate the path forward with the light of truth.
