“Marxism in Contemporary China: Theory and Practice” High-Level Forum Held in Xuzhou

From 17 to 18 November 2018, the “Marxism in Contemporary China: Theory and Practice” High-Level Forum was held in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province. The forum was co-hosted by the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Jiangsu Normal University, and organized by the Research Department of Marxist Development of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the School of Marxism of Jiangsu Normal University, the Belt and Road Research Institute, and the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. The forum was convened to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth and the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, to implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC, to promote the innovative development of Marxist theory and the construction of the discipline of Marxist theory, and to effectively strengthen confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The conference received 95 papers, and more than 100 experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Jiangsu Normal University, Zhejiang University, Nankai University, as well as from *Marxist Studies* and *People’s Daily*, attended the forum.

2018年11月17日至18日，“马克思主义在当代中国的理论与实践”高层论坛在江苏徐州召开。论坛由中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院、江苏师范大学主办，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院马克思主义发展研究部，江苏师范大学马克思主义学院、“一带一路”研究院、人文社会科学研究院承办。这次论坛是为纪念马克思诞辰200周年、中国改革开放40周年，贯彻落实十九大精神，推动马克思主义理论创新发展和马克思主义理论学科建设，切实增强中国特色社会主义道路、理论、制度、文化自信而召开的。会议收到论文95篇，来自中国社科院、江苏师大、浙江大学、南开大学，以及《马克思主义研究》、《人民日报》等单位的百多位专家学者出席论坛。

Professor Cen Hong, Deputy Party Secretary of Jiangsu Normal University, and Researcher Deng Chundong, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered opening remarks in succession. Professor Cen Hong extended a warm welcome to the attending experts and scholars from across the country. She pointed out that the scholars’ collective exchange and discussion of the theory and practice of Marxism’s development in contemporary China holds very important academic and practical significance.

Researcher Deng Chundong expressed the hope that this forum would play an effective role in the following three aspects. First, to promote the study and research of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. He pointed out that the theory and practice of Marxism in contemporary China is precisely the theory and practice of contemporary Chinese Marxism and Marxism of the 21st century, especially Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which has been formed in practice. In recent years, although academia has published many research and propaganda articles, the study and propaganda of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era still need to be intensified. In particular, as professional teachers and researchers of Marxist theory, we must take the lead in studying, understanding, and researching Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, studying it more deeply, and demonstrating a higher level and more precise understanding. To achieve this goal, exchange within the profession is necessary. The forum aims to promote a more accurate understanding

邓纯东研究员希望此次论坛在以下三个方面发挥好作用。一是推动习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的学习与研究。他指出，马克思主义在当代中国的理论与实践，就是当代中国的马克思主义、21世纪的马克思主义的理论与实践，尤其是在实践中形成的习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想。近几年，学术界虽然发表了很多研究与宣传性文章，但是，对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的学习与宣传还需要加大力度。尤其是我们作为专业的马克思主义理论的教学与研究者，对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义的学习、理解与研究，必须走在前头，学得更深入，体现更高水平与更精准的理解。实现这样的目标，业内需要交流，论坛就是要推动学界、教育界乃是全社会对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想更准确理解，对习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想的各方面内容理解的加深，从而带动全社会对这一重要思想的精准把握。二是促进马克思主义科学理论在当代中国更好地坚持和发展、继承和创新。他强调，对马克思主义既要坚持也要发展，是共产党人对待马克思主义的科学态度，也是马克思主义成功实现中国化的基本经验，二者缺一不可，在我们党的历史上也有过这方面教训。如何坚持与如何创新发展，理论界必须要做具体化文章，从理论上给党员、全社会正确地阐述清楚哪些是必须坚持，哪些需要在当代中国创新发展，我们的论坛目的就是致力于做好对当代马克思主义的理解和应用的具体化文章。三是促进马克思主义在当代中国的实践及其经验的科学总结。他指出，马克思主义在当代中国的实践就是中国特色社会主义各方面的事业的发展。“五位一体”就是中国特色社会主义实践的主要内容。改革开放40年来，对中国人民和中国共产党的实践成就如何认识，成功经验如何总结，表现在哪些方面，这些必须搞清楚，如果把经验总结歪了，对我们今后继续深化改革和推进中国特色社会主义发展是极其不利的。当前，在总结改革开放的成果与经验时有两种不好的倾向。一种是否定改革开放的成就。甚至认为中国就是因为学习西方市场经济，才取得了一些成就；另一方面是极端化地认为改革开放导致诸多恶果。认为当前社会凸显出来的一些不健康现象，如在经济社会发展中存在诚信缺失、假冒伪劣、坑蒙拐骗等问题，食品药品安全、社会丑恶现象的存在，把产生这些消极现象的根源都归结为改革开放。马克思主义不回避现实问题，今年全党全国纪念总结改革开放40周年，我们必须以习近平总书记关于改革的若干重要论述为指导，准确地认识我国改革开放的实质、成功经验，从理论上总结提炼成功经验，以便更好地指导中国特色社会主义实践的深入推进，确保中国特色社会主义事业不断取得成功。

At the conference, Professor Yu Sinian of Central China Normal University, Researcher Tang Jianjun, Vice Chairman of the Seventh Committee of the Hunan Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, Researcher Liu Zhiming, Director of the Department of Marxist Development Studies at the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wang Shijin, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of *Marxist Studies*, Professor Shen Zhengping, Executive Deputy Director of the Belt and Road Initiative Research Institute of Jiangsu Normal University, Researcher Li Yang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of *Xinhua Daily*, Professor Chen Yanbin, Director of the Chinese Family Culture Research Institute of Jiangsu Normal University and Lead of the Key Discipline of Marxist Theory in Jiangsu Province, Professor Bu Xiangji of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Jiang Xudong, Director of the Editorial Office of *Research on Marxist Theory Disciplines*, and Zheng Liping, Deputy Director of the Special Theory Division of the Social Science Center of the Ministry of Education, delivered keynote reports on Marxism in contemporary China: theory and practice. Professor Shi Haibing, Dean of the School of Marxism at Jiangsu Normal University, chaired the conference presentations.

At three parallel forums, participating representatives engaged in exchange and discussion on topics including research on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the theoretical development of Marxism in contemporary China, practical exploration and experience summarization, and research on core socialist values. Director Deng Chundong finally delivered the conference summary, fully affirming the achievements of the forum in advancing research on Marxist theory and in summarizing the practical experience of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

在三个分论坛上，与会代表围绕习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想研究、马克思主义在当代中国的理论发展、实践探索与经验总结、社会主义核心价值观研究等专题进行了交流研讨。邓纯东院长最后作会议总结，他充分肯定了论坛在推进马克思主义理论研究、在总结中国特色社会主义实践经验方面所取得的成果。
