“Upholding Fundamental Principles and Innovating Marxist Theory — Symposium on Cheng Enfu’s Academic Thought” Held in Beijing

On 22 September 2020, the “Upholding Fundamental Principles and Innovating Marxist Theory — Symposium on Cheng Enfu’s Academic Thought” was held in Conference Room 218 of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Jiang Hui, Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, and President of the Academy of Marxism, attended and delivered a speech. Xin Xiangyang, Vice President of the Academy of Marxism, presided over the symposium. More than forty experts and scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences attended the symposium.

Jiang Hui, Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Academy of Marxism, extends congratulations to Academic Division Member Cheng Enfu on his 45 years of teaching.

中国社科院党组成员、马研院院长姜辉向学部委员程恩富从教45年表示祝贺

Comrade Jiang Hui pointed out in his speech that Academic Division Member Cheng Enfu has for decades devoted himself to pioneering research and forward-looking exploration in political economy, insisting on systematic analysis of economic methods, principles, and policies, promoting the development of modern political economy in the direction of internationalization, application, and mathematization, and playing a leading role in academic circles at home and abroad. Professor Cheng Enfu has played a unique role in offering advice and suggestions for the Party and the state. In the past decade or so, he served as a deputy to the 11th and 12th National People’s Congress and as a member of the Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress, actively offering advice and suggestions for reform, opening up, and development using political economy theory, which was highly valued by the leadership of the National People’s Congress, the State Council, and relevant ministries and commissions. During his tenure as head of the Academy of Marxism and the Academic Division of Marxism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Cheng Enfu actively implemented the strategic deployment of the Academy’s Party Leadership Group regarding the Project for the Study and Development of Marxist Theory [1]1 The Project for the Study and Development of Marxist Theory (马克思主义理论研究和建设工程) is a major state-led initiative launched in 2004 to strengthen the theoretical foundation of the Chinese Communist Party by producing authoritative textbooks and research on Marxism, with the aim of guiding ideological and educational work., and did a great deal of work in promoting innovation in basic theoretical research, strengthening the Academy through management, talent cultivation, academic journals and think tank forums, and advancing the internationalization of Marxist research. Professor Cheng Enfu equally emphasized writing books and educating people, and over his 45 years of teaching, he has cultivated a large number of talents for Marxist theoretical research and education for the country.

姜辉同志在致辞中指出，程恩富学部委员数十年来一直致力于政治经济学的开拓性研究与前瞻性探索，坚持经济学方法、原理和政策的系统分析，推动现代政治经济学向国际化、应用化、数学化的方向发展，在国内外学界发挥了领军作用。程恩富教授为党和国家建言献策发挥了独特作用。近十几年来他担任第十一届和第十二届全国人大代表、第十三届全国人大教科文卫委员会委员等，运用政治经济学理论为改革开放发展积极献言献策，全国人大和国务院领导及有关部委高度重视。程恩富教授主持中国社科院马研院和马研学部工作期间，积极落实社科院党组关于马克思主义理论研究与建设工程的战略部署，在推动基础理论研究创新、管理强院、人才培养、学术期刊和智库论坛建设及推动马克思主义研究国际化合作等方面均做了大量工作。程恩富教授著书和育人并重，从教45年来，为国家培养了一大批马克思主义理论研究和教育人才。

Comrade Jiang Hui emphasized that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is currently at a critical juncture; this is an era that needs thought and theory and is certain to produce thought and theory. There is great potential for the development and innovation of Marxist theory. We must unswervingly take Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as our guide and make new contributions to developing Marxism for contemporary China and Marxism for the 21st century. To fulfill this historical mission, we need a group of Marxist scholars with firm positions, superb professional skills, a talent for innovation, and a sense of responsibility, who will pool their wisdom and efforts and work together. We wish Professor Cheng Enfu to scale new heights and continue to play the leading and exemplary role of an academic leader.

姜辉同志强调，当前中华民族伟大复兴处于关键时期，这是需要思想理论也一定产生思想理论的时代。马克思主义理论发展创新大有可为。我们要坚定不移地以习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想为指导，为发展当代中国马克思主义、21世纪马克思主义做出新的贡献。为实现这样的历史使命，需要一批立场坚定、业务精湛、善于创新、敢于担当的马克思主义学者，群策群力，共同奋斗。祝愿程恩富教授再攀高峰，继续发挥学术领军人物的引领示范作用。

Tian Xinming, former Director of the Social Science Development Research Center of the Ministry of Education; Wen Kui, former President of Capital University of Economics and Business, and senior professor Ding Bing; Bai Baoli, Director of the Contemporary Economic Theory Research Center at Beijing Normal University; Xiao Guiqing, Vice President of the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University; Song Chaolong, Vice President of the School of Marxism at Peking University; Guo Fei, Director of the China Economic Development Research Center at the University of International Business and Economics; Tian Chenshan, Professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University; Li Chengxun, former Vice President of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Zhang Shunhong, former Director of the Institute of World History; Zhou Suyuan, former Party Secretary of the Institute of Modern History; and Feng Yanli, Vice Director of the Institute of Philosophy, were among the well-known scholars who spoke at the symposium. Personnel from *People’s Daily* and Economic Science Press also attended the symposium.

The attending experts discussed Professor Cheng Enfu’s writing of books and establishment of theories, teaching and educating people, participation in and deliberation on political affairs, international pioneering work, scientific research management, and construction of academic groups. They generally agreed that Professor Cheng Enfu has made special contributions to upholding fundamental principles and innovating Marxism, especially political economy.

与会专家围绕程恩富教授的著书立说、教书育人、参政议政、国际化开拓、科研管理和学术团体建设等方面进行了研讨，普遍认为程恩富教授为守正创新马克思主义特别是政治经济学作出了特殊贡献。
