【Academic Notice】21st Century Marxism Lecture Hall (First Lecture)

Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, changes in the domestic and international situation and the development of our country’s various undertakings have presented us with a major issue of the times: that is, we must systematically answer, from the integration of theory and practice, what kind of socialism with Chinese characteristics to uphold and develop in the New Era and how to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics. Focusing on this major issue of the times, our Party has adhered to the guidance of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thought of Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development; adhered to seeking truth from facts, keeping pace with the times, and being practical and realistic; adhered to dialectical materialism and historical materialism; closely integrated new conditions and practical requirements of the times; deepened the understanding of the laws of governance by the Communist Party, the laws of socialist construction, and the laws of the development of human society from a new perspective; engaged in arduous theoretical exploration; and achieved major theoretical and practical innovations, establishing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This thought is the latest achievement in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context, is Marxism of contemporary China and Marxism of the 21st century, opens up a new realm for the development of 21st-century Marxism, brings the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context into a new stage, and realizes a new leap. Deeply studying, publicizing, researching, and interpreting Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, deeply researching major theoretical and practical issues of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the New Era, and better serving the era’s task of enriching and developing Marxism of contemporary China and Marxism of the 21st century are the important historical missions of the Academy of Marxism and Marxist scholars nationwide.

党的十八大以来，国内外形势变化和我国各项事业发展都给我们提供了一个重大时代课题，这就是必须从理论和实践结合上系统回答新时代坚持和发展什么样的中国特色社会主义、怎样坚持发展中国特色社会主义。围绕这个重大时代课题，我们党坚持以马克思列宁主义、毛泽东思想、邓小平理论、“三个代表”重要思想、科学发展观为指导，坚持解放思想、实事求是、与时俱进、求真务实，坚持辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义，紧密结合新的时代条件和实践要求，以全新的视野深化对共产党执政规律、社会主义建设规律、人类社会发展规律的认识，进行艰辛理论探索，取得了重大理论和实践创新成果，创立了习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想。这一思想是马克思主义中国化的最新成果，是当代中国马克思主义、21世纪马克思主义，开辟了21世纪马克思主义发展的新境界，使马克思主义中国化进入了新的阶段，实现了新的飞跃。深入学习宣传研究阐释习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，深入研究新时代中国特色社会主义重大理论和实践问题，更好地服务于丰富和发展当代中国马克思主义、21世纪马克思主义这一时代任务，是马研院和全国马克思主义学者的重要历史使命。

The world is undergoing changes unseen in a century, and China is in a critical period for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Starting today, the Academy of Marxism is launching the “21st Century Marxism Lecture Hall” series of lectures. It will periodically invite renowned Marxist scholars from China and abroad to give special lectures on major theoretical and practical issues, broadening our theoretical horizons and enriching our academic cultivation. For the first lecture, we have invited Li Shenming, former Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and a renowned Marxist scholar, whose lecture is titled “A Tentative Discussion on China’s Period of Important Strategic Opportunity.”

世界正经历百年未有之大变局，中国正处于中华民族伟大复兴关键期，从今天起，马克思主义研究院推出“21世纪马克思主义大讲堂”系列讲座，将不定期邀请中外马克思主义著名学者，就重大理论和实践问题做专题演讲，开拓我们的理论视野，丰厚我们的学术涵养。第一讲我们邀请了中国社会科学院原副院长、党组副书记，著名马克思主义学者李慎明研究员，演讲题目为《试论我国重要战略机遇期》。

Li Shenming, former Vice President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Director of the World Socialism Research Center, Researcher, Doctoral Supervisor; former member of the Standing Committee of the 10th, 11th, and 12th National People’s Congress, Vice Chairman of the Internal and Judicial Affairs Committee of the 12th National People’s Congress, delegate to the 16th and 17th National Congresses of the CPC; member and chief expert of the Advisory Committee for the Central Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project; head of the International Issues Group of the Evaluation Committee for the National Philosophy and Social Science Planning Fund Project; member of the Political Science Group of the 6th and 7th Discipline Evaluation Groups of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council; President of the Chinese Association of Political Science; advisor to the National Research Association for Party Building, the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, the China Association for International Friendly Contact, and the Expert Advisory Committee for Reform and Development of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; member of the Expert Advisory Group of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.

李慎明，中国社会科学院原副院长、党组副书记，世界社会主义研究中心主任，研究员、博士生导师；曾任第十、十一、十二届全国人大常委会委员，第十二届全国人大内务司法委员会副主任委员，党的十六大、十七大代表；中央马克思主义理论研究和建设工程咨询委员会委员、首席专家；全国哲学社会科学规划基金项目评审委员会国际问题组组长；国务院学位委员会第六、第七届学科评议组政治组成员；中国政治学会会长；全国党的建设研究会、中国国际战略学会、中国国际友好联络会、国家中医药管理局改革发展专家咨询委员会等顾问；中央统战部专家咨询组成员。

Main research directions: Party building, democratic politics, international strategy, and the history of the CPC, the history of the People’s Republic of China, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the drastic changes in Eastern Europe.

He has published over 300 articles in major central newspapers and periodicals such as *People’s Daily*, *Qiushi* Journal, and *Guangming Daily*. Many of his works have received national awards.
