The 12th World Socialism Forum Held in Beijing

On December 21, the 12th World Socialism Forum was held in Beijing. The forum’s theme was “Upholding Fundamental Principles and Breaking New Ground for Marxism in the 21st Century.” Gao Xiang, Vice President and Deputy Party Secretary of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, President and Party Secretary of the Chinese Academy of History; Jiang Hui, Vice President and Party Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies and President of the Academy of Marxism; Guo Yezhou, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; and Carlos Miguel Pereira, Cuban Ambassador to China, attended the forum’s opening ceremony.

Gao Xiang pointed out that deeply studying the spirit of the “Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the Major Achievements and Historical Experience of the Party over the Past Century” (hereinafter referred to as the “Resolution”) adopted at the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC [1]1 The Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC was held in November 2021; it adopted the third historical resolution of the Party, summarizing the Party’s major achievements and historical experience over its century-long history., and further deeply comprehending and grasping Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, holds particularly important significance for advancing the cause of world socialism. In the historical process of the world situation undergoing profound changes, contemporary Chinese Communists must unswervingly hold high the great banner of Marxism, transform the Two Establishments [2]2 The Two Establishments refers to establishing Comrade Xi Jinping’s core position on the Party Central Committee and in the Party as a whole, and establishing the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. into the political, ideological, and actional consciousness of the Two Upholds [3]3 The Two Upholds refers to upholding Comrade Xi Jinping’s core position on the Party Central Committee and in the Party as a whole, and upholding the authority and centralized, unified leadership of the Party Central Committee., and become firm believers in 21st-century Marxism; they must strengthen their ideals and convictions and become faithful practitioners of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context; they must take building a community with a shared future for mankind as their guide and become unremitting actors in promoting peace and development for humanity and building a better world.

高翔指出，深入学习中共十九届六中全会通过的《中共中央关于党的百年奋斗重大成就和历史经验的决议》（以下简称《决议》）精神，进一步深刻领会把握习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，对于推进世界社会主义事业，有着特别重要的意义。在世界形势不断发生深刻变化的历史进程中，当代中国共产党人要矢志不渝高举马克思主义的伟大旗帜，把“两个确立”转化为“两个维护”的政治自觉、思想自觉、行动自觉，做21世纪马克思主义的坚定信仰者；要坚定理想信念，做马克思主义中国化的忠实实践者；要以构建人类命运共同体为指引，做促进人类和平与发展、建设更加美好世界的不懈行动者。

Jiang Hui pointed out that as we enter the third decade of the 21st century, an increasingly recognized landmark fact and development trend is that the world is undergoing changes unseen in a century, and China has become the main driving force of these great global changes. The development miracle and tremendous contributions of the New Era of socialism with Chinese characteristics are a splendid chapter in China’s historical process and a great creation in the history of human social development. Socialism with Chinese characteristics has shattered the myth of so-called “universal values” and the “only choice,” providing Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions for the development of human society and the exploration of a better social system, offering a new direction, a new choice, and a bright future.

姜辉指出，进入21世纪第三个十年的时候，人们越来越认同的一个具有标志性的重要事实和发展趋势是：世界处于百年未有之大变局，而中国则成为世界大变局的主要推动力量。中国特色社会主义新时代的发展奇迹和巨大贡献，是中国历史进程中的精彩篇章，也是人类社会发展史上的伟大创造。中国特色社会主义打破了所谓“普世价值”的神话和“唯一选择”，为人类社会发展和对更好社会制度的探索提供了中国智慧和中国方案，提供了一个崭新的方向，一种全新的选择，一个光明的前途。

Guo Yezhou stated that upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground for Marxism in the 21st century, as well as the development of socialism, must be observed and advanced within the coordinates of world history and the broad international stage. Currently, under the interactive influence of changes unseen in a century and the COVID-19 pandemic, the cause of world socialism still has a long way to go. Strengthening exchanges and cooperation among Marxist political parties on the basis of seeking common ground while reserving differences, mutual respect, and mutual learning is of great significance for upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground for Marxism in the 21st century and for the further revitalization of the world socialist movement.

郭业洲表示，21世纪马克思主义的守正与创新以及社会主义的发展都要放在世界历史坐标以及广阔的国际舞台去观察和推进。当前，在百年未有之大变局和新冠肺炎疫情的交互影响下，世界社会主义事业的发展依然任重道远。马克思主义政党在求同存异、相互尊重、互学互鉴的基础上加强交流合作，对于21世纪马克思主义的守正创新、对于世界社会主义运动进一步走向振兴具有重大意义。

Carlos Miguel Pereira stated that the historical achievements of the Communist Party of China over its century-long journey fully prove that the CPC has always been able to maintain a firm political and revolutionary stance, safeguarding the interests of the Chinese nation with reason, advantage, and restraint. This enables the CPC to face enormous challenges and tests and unswervingly lead the Chinese nation along the socialist path. The important experiences China has gained in the process of socialist construction hold significant reference value for Cuba and other socialist countries.

卡洛斯·米格尔·佩雷拉表示，中国共产党在百年历程中取得的历史成就充分证明，中国共产党始终能够保持坚定的政治和革命立场，有理有利有节维护中华民族的利益。这使中国共产党能够面对巨大的挑战和考验，坚定不移地带领中华民族走社会主义道路。中国在社会主义建设进程中获得的重要经验对古巴和其他社会主义国家具有重要的借鉴意义。

Li Shenming, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Director of the World Socialism Research Center, stated that the “Resolution” adopted at the Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC points out the need to “uphold and develop Marxism.” In today’s China, as long as the entire Party and the whole country adhere to a people-centered approach, focus on the new and immensely magnificent and rich practices, seek truth from facts in summarizing experiences and lessons from all aspects, and, under the strong and correct leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, unify upholding and developing Marxism, we will surely realize Comrade Mao Zedong’s grand wish for the Chinese nation to make greater contributions to humanity.

Li Wentang, Member of the School Committee and Director of the Department of Literature and History Teaching and Research at the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance), stated that Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era exhibits a strong historical consciousness and concern for civilization, achieving a new leap in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context. Building on the three major narrative discourses of revolution, nation, and modernization formed during the previous two leaps [4]4 The “two previous leaps” refer to the first leap in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context (the formation of Mao Zedong Thought) and the second leap (the formation of the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, including Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development)., it has strengthened the discourse of civilization, making the Chinese path and national rejuvenation more prominent in terms of historical subjectivity and the internal logic of civilization, centrally embodying the civilizational awakening of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese nation. The development of 21st-century Marxism in China requires, academically, further shedding the imprint of Western-centrism and constructing a Chinese discourse and narrative system based on Chinese civilization.

Egon Krenz, former General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of the German Democratic Republic, remarked that looking back, how many political parties once set out full of hope, only to be abandoned by the wheel of history along the way. The Communist Party of China has withstood the test of history; now she stands tall, leading the country forward. The CPC integrates Marxism-Leninism with China’s actual conditions and continuously develops Marxism-Leninism, and the historical and contemporary impact of this has international significance. China’s example holds a future value that cannot be underestimated.

前民主德国统一社会党总书记埃贡·克伦茨谈到，忆往昔，曾经有多少政党充满希望地踏上征程，途中却被历史的车轮抛弃。中国共产党经受住了历史的考验，如今她巍然屹立，率领国家不断前行。中国共产党将马克思列宁主义与中国实际相结合，并且不断发展马列主义，其产生的历史和现实影响具有国际意义。中国的榜样具有不可低估的未来价值。

Zhang Quanjing, former Minister of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, former President of the National Research Association for Party Building, and Advisor to the World Socialism Research Center, sent a written congratulatory message to the forum. Chen Li, Director of the Academic and Editorial Committee of the Institute of Party History and Literature of the Central Committee of the CPC, delivered a written speech. Xin Xiangyang, Party Secretary and Vice President of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, presided over the forum. Chinese and foreign guests, both online and offline, engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including the major achievements and experience of the CPC’s century-long struggle, the contribution of the political development path of socialism with Chinese characteristics to human political civilization, the lessons and revelations from the collapse of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Soviet Union 30 years ago, and upholding and developing 21st-century Marxism.
