“2022 National Forum on Basic Principles of Marxism” Academic Seminar Held at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

To study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC, promote exchange and the display of achievements among experts and scholars engaged in the research and teaching of the basic principles of Marxism, and advance the classical inheritance and innovative development of the basic principles of Marxism, the “2022 National Forum on Basic Principles of Marxism and Seminar on the Basic Principles of Marxism and the Study of the Spirit of the 20th National Congress,” sponsored by the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Editorial Department of *World Socialism Studies*, and the Beijing Collaborative Innovation Center for the Study of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (China University of Political Science and Law), and hosted by the School of Marxism of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Base of the Jiangsu Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, was convened at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on November 6, 2022. The theme of this seminar was: “Study and Application of the Basic Principles of Marxism: Studying the Spirit of the 20th National Congress.” Specific topics included: (1) the thought on economic construction in the New Era in the report of the 20th National Congress; (2) the thought on political construction in the New Era in the report of the 20th National Congress; (3) the thought on cultural construction in the New Era in the report of the 20th National Congress; (4) the thought on social construction in the New Era in the report of the 20th National Congress; (5) the thought on ecological civilization construction in the New Era in the report of the 20th National Congress; (6) the thought on international issues in the report of the 20th National Congress; (7) contemporary application of the basic principles of Marxism; (8) disciplinary construction of the basic principles of Marxism; and others.

为学习贯彻党的二十大精神，促进广大从事马克思主义基本原理研究和教学工作的专家学者互相交流、展示成果，推动马克思主义基本原理的经典传承与创新发展，由中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院、《世界社会主义研究》编辑部、北京高校中国特色社会主义理论研究协同创新中心（中国政法大学）主办，南京航空航天大学马克思主义学院、江苏省习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想研究中心南京航空航天大学基地承办的“2022年全国马克思主义基本原理论坛暨马克思主义基本原理与学习二十大精神研讨会”于2022年11月6日在南京航空航天大学召开。本届研讨会主题：“马克思主义基本原理学习与运用：学习二十大精神”。具体议题包括：（1）党的二十大报告关于新时代经济建设思想；（2）党的二十大报告关于新时代政治建设思想；（3）党的二十大报告关于新时代文化建设思想；（4）党的二十大报告关于新时代社会建设思想；（5）党的二十大报告关于新时代生态文明建设思想；（6）党的二十大报告关于国际问题思想；（7）马克思主义基本原理当代应用；（8）马克思主义基本原理学科建设；等等。

More than 300 renowned Marxist theory research experts, ideological and political course teachers, and young scholars from universities, Party schools, and research institutions across the country, including the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Jilin University, Shandong University, the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China University of Political Science and Law, and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, participated via a combination of online and offline methods.

南京航空航天大学副校长姜斌致辞

Jiang Bin’s address argued that the 20th National Congress emphasized that only by integrating the basic principles of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with the fine traditional Chinese culture, and by persisting in applying dialectical materialism and historical materialism, can we correctly answer the major questions posed by the era and practice, and can we always maintain the vigorous vitality and strong vitality of Marxism. Deeply studying the spirit of the 20th National Congress and conducting academic discussions on the basic principles of Marxism and their development in the New Era will help advance the education, teaching, research, propaganda, and talent cultivation of Marxist theory. Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics inherits the red gene of serving the country through aviation, adheres to the original aspiration of educating people for the Party and cultivating talent for the country, and always keeps pace with the times. Generations of NUAA people, bearing in mind the “greatest concerns of the state,”[1]1 “Greatest concerns of the state” (国之大者) is a phrase used in official discourse to refer to the most important national interests and strategic priorities that Party members and cadres must keep in mind. have made important contributions to the aerospace industry. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of NUAA, we thank all the experts for coming to guide us.

In his address, Lin Jianhua stated that our forum has developed in step with the New Era and has now reached its tenth session, which is the result of the joint efforts of academic colleagues. He argued that, first, we must study the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC in its original form, word by word and sentence by sentence, focusing on the second part of the report of the 20th National Congress, “Opening Up New Horizons in Adapting Marxism to the Chinese Context and the Needs of the Times,” and deeply comprehend the principles, theories, and philosophies it contains. Second, we must recognize that Marxism is the fundamental guiding ideology for the Party to establish the Party and the country, and to rejuvenate the Party and the country. Possessing the scientific theoretical guidance of Marxism is the fundamental basis for our Party to firmly believe in its faith and grasp the historical initiative, and it is our Party’s distinct political character and strong political advantage. Third, we must not only engage in scholarship within the study but also step out of the study, move toward the vibrant social life, conduct scholarship on the land of China, solve China’s problems, and open up new horizons in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.

林建华在致辞中表示，我们的论坛与新时代同步发展，迄今恰好是第十届，这是学术界同仁共同努力的结果。他认为，一是要原原本本、逐字逐句学习党的二十大精神，重点学习二十大报告第二部分“开辟马克思主义中国化时代化新境界”，深刻领会蕴涵道理学理哲理。二是要认识到马克思主义是我们党立党立国、兴党兴国的根本指导思想，拥有马克思主义科学理论指导是我们党坚定信仰信念、把握历史主动的根本所在，是我们党鲜明的政治品格和强大的政治优势。三是既要做书斋里的学问，更要走出书斋，走向火热的社会生活，把学问做在中国的大地上，解决中国问题，开辟马克思主义中国化时代化新境界。

Gao Huanyue expressed her reflections using three pairs of keywords. The first was welcome and gratitude, expressing thanks on behalf of the sponsoring units to all experts and scholars. The second was mission and responsibility. The contemporary value of Marxism has been fully demonstrated in the socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics. This forum delves deeply into the various thoughts in the report of the 20th National Congress, fully undertaking the historical mission and responsibility of Marxist researchers. It is timely and of great significance. The third was expectation and confidence. This conference brings together many experts and scholars from numerous universities, making it a high-end grand gathering in the field of Marxist theory, which is inspiring. The sponsoring units possess strong academic strength, promote research on the basic principles of Marxism, consolidate the guiding position of Marxism in philosophy and social sciences, jointly advance the regularization of the National Forum on Basic Principles of Marxism, accumulate rich theoretical resources, and achieve fruitful theoretical results.

Cheng Enfu, Member of the Academic Division of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chief Professor of the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Member of the Education, Science, Culture, and Public Health Committee of the National People’s Congress, delivered the keynote report. Utilizing his profound theoretical and academic foundation, a clear Marxist stance, viewpoint, and method, and integrating the spirit of the 20th National Congress and the Party’s innovative theory and practice, Professor Cheng Enfu proposed that the Party’s self-revolution must oppose five erroneous viewpoints, namely: opposing and resisting erroneous ideological trends that deviate from Marxism; opposing and resisting individualism that deviates from establishing the Party for the public good; opposing and resisting bureaucratism that is divorced from the masses; opposing and resisting formalism that is divorced from reality; and opposing and resisting escapism that fears struggle. Professor Cheng Enfu emphasized that Marxist scholars should be adept at organically combining academic research, theoretical propaganda and education, and policy discussion, and should take on the responsibilities of the era.

Professor Zhao Ling of the School of Marxism at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Professor Zhang Guoxian, Director of the Center for Innovative Marxist Studies at the School of Marxism of Shanghai International Studies University; Professor Zhang Xiuhua of the School of Marxism at China University of Political Science and Law; Professor Jin Jiaxin of the School of Marxism at China Pharmaceutical University; Professor Zhang Fuwen of the School of Marxism at Shanghai University; Professor Su Zhenfeng of the Party School of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the CPC; Professor He Hahun of the School of Marxism at Hunan First Normal University; Professor Xia Yonglin of the School of Marxism at Xidian University; and Professor Fang Guangshun, former Dean of the School of Marxism at Liaoning University, each delivered reports titled: “The Institutional Basis and Livelihood Value of People’s Consumption Democracy,” “The Great Founding Spirit of the Party Is the Spiritual Driving Force for Advancing Chinese-Path Modernization,” [4]4 The Great Founding Spirit of the Party (伟大建党精神) refers to the spirit of the CPC’s founding, officially defined as: upholding truth and ideals, staying true to the original aspiration and founding mission, daring to struggle and sacrifice, and being loyal to the Party and faithful to the people. “The Integration of the Scientific Spirit and the Craftsmanship Spirit from the Perspective of Marx’s Practical Philosophy,” “Theoretical Innovation and Practical Development of the Party’s Ideology Since the 18th National Congress,” [5]5 The 18th National Congress of the CPC was held in 2012, marking the beginning of the New Era under Xi Jinping’s leadership. “An Analysis of the CPC’s Strategic Understanding of Major Historical Issues,” “A Study of the Content System of Xi Jinping’s Important Discourse on Scientific and Technological Innovation,” “The Logic of Capital Expansion and Its Prevention and Cure — Revisiting Marx’s Critique of Capital,” “Continuing to Advance the Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese Context and the Needs of the Times in Confidence,” and “The Value Purport and Path of Promoting the Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture of Clean Governance.”

Researcher Zhang Jianyun, Director of the Office of Marxist Philosophy at the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered the conference summary. She reviewed the ten-year development history of the “National Forum on the Basic Principles of Marxism” series of conferences, noting that it has played an important and positive role in promoting the academic community’s intensive study of Marxist classics, in-depth elucidation and applied research on the basic principles of Marxism, and in advancing the construction of the discipline of basic principles of Marxism and the work of theoretical propaganda. It has built a platform for Marxist theory scholars and teachers of ideological and political courses in universities to learn from each other and exchange achievements, serving as a spiritual home for Marxist theory researchers, propagandists, and educators. This forum, with the theme of the basic principles of Marxism and the study of the spirit of the 20th National Congress, focused mainly on daring to struggle and being adept at struggle, Chinese-path modernization, upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, youth and ideological-political work, the Two Integrations, and the application of the basic principles of Marxism in the New Era. The forum achieved complete success. Professor Zheng Jingbin, Vice Dean of the School of Marxism at Shandong University, spoke on behalf of the next host institution; the 2023 National Forum on the Basic Principles of Marxism will be held in Jinan, Shandong.
