The 2024 Academic Annual Conference of the China Atheism Society and the 12th Forum on Scientific Atheism Convened in Urumqi

In order to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches at the Symposium on Cultural Heritage Development and the National Conference on Religious Work, to forge a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, and to promote the disciplinary construction of scientific atheism, the 2024 Academic Annual Conference of the China Atheism Society and the 12th Forum on Scientific Atheism convened in Urumqi on June 22. This conference was hosted by the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Atheism Society, the Research Center for Science and Atheism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Xinjiang University; organized by the Department of Research on Adapting Marxism to the Chinese Context of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the School of Marxism of Xinjiang University, the Research Base for Forging a Strong Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation of Xinjiang University, and the Institute of Philosophy of Xinjiang University; and co-organized by the editorial office of *Science and Atheism*. The conference theme was “‘The Two Integrations’ and Marxist Atheism in the New Era.” Chen Zhigang, Deputy Director of the Academy of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Editor-in-Chief of *Science and Atheism*; Gong Yun, Party Secretary of the Institute of Finance and Banking of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chair of the China Atheism Society, and Director of the Research Center for Science and Atheism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Dai Bin, Party Secretary of Xinjiang University, attended the conference and delivered addresses.

为贯彻落实习近平总书记在文化传承发展座谈会和全国宗教工作会议上的重要讲话精神，铸牢中华民族共同体意识，推动科学无神论学科建设，中国无神论学会2024年学术年会暨第十二届科学无神论论坛于6月22日在乌鲁木齐召开。本次会议由中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院、中国无神论学会、中国社会科学院科学与无神论研究中心、新疆大学主办，中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院马克思主义中国化研究部、新疆大学马克思主义学院、新疆大学铸牢中华民族共同体意识研究基地、新疆大学哲学研究所承办，《科学与无神论》编辑部协办。会议主题为“‘两个结合’与新时代马克思主义无神论”。中国社会科学院马克思主义研究院副院长、《科学与无神论》主编陈志刚，中国社会科学院金融研究所党委书记、中国无神论学会理事长、中国社会科学院科学与无神论研究中心主任龚云，新疆大学党委书记代斌出席会议并致辞。

In his address, Dai Bin pointed out that this forum will surely and effectively promote intellectual exchange and the sharing of achievements among scholars of atheism research, advance theoretical research and practical innovation in Marxist atheism, further consolidate Marxism’s guiding position in the ideological domain, and manifest the vigorous vitality and robust dynamism of Marxist atheism in the New Era. He expressed the hope that, taking the opportunity of hosting this forum, cooperation and exchange with various departments, research institutions, and experts and scholars could be strengthened, jointly contributing to the advancement of the disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of scientific atheism in the New Era.

In his address, Chen Zhigang emphasized that the atheist ideological resources contained in fine traditional Chinese culture have not only profoundly influenced the national character and spiritual world of the Chinese nation but also provided important cultural soil for the dissemination of Marxism in China. For Marxism, atheism is its premise and foundation, occupying a starting position in the logical construction of Marxist theory. For fine traditional Chinese culture, atheism is a tradition originating in its early period. The two have a natural convergence and compatibility in terms of theoretical status and philosophical mission. The fact that Marxism, after being introduced into China, was warmly welcomed by the Chinese people and ultimately took root in Chinese soil, blossoming and bearing fruit, is also closely related to the profound atheist tradition of Chinese civilization.

陈志刚在致辞中强调，中华优秀传统文化蕴含的无神论思想资源，不但深刻影响了中华民族的民族禀赋和精神世界，也为马克思主义在中国的传播提供了重要的文化土壤。对于马克思主义来说，无神论是其前提和基础，在马克思主义理论的逻辑建构中处于起点的位置，对中华优秀传统文化来说，无神论是发源于其早期的传统，两者在理论地位和哲学使命上有着天然的融通契合之处。马克思主义传入中国后，之所以能够受到中国人民热烈欢迎，并最终扎根中国大地、开花结果，也与中华文明深厚的无神论传统息息相关。

Chen Zhigang further pointed out that the precious atheist ideological resources in fine traditional Chinese culture are a source for promoting research and propaganda-education in Marxist atheism. Atheism research workers in the New Era should naturally take up this responsibility, deeply excavate the atheist resources in fine traditional Chinese culture, use Marxism to activate the atheist elements in fine traditional Chinese culture and endow them with new contemporary connotations, promote the creative transformation and innovative development of a series of atheist resources such as ceaseless self-renewal, people-centeredness, humanistic rationality, and practical application, inject the essence and marrow of Chinese atheism more deeply into Marxist atheism, drive new progress in Marxist atheism research and propaganda-education work, and continuously write a new chapter in adapting Marxist atheism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.

陈志刚进一步指出，中华优秀传统文化中宝贵的无神论思想资源，是推动马克思主义无神论研究和宣传教育的源泉。新时代的无神论研究工作者，理应担负起这个责任，深入挖掘中华优秀传统文化中的无神论资源，用马克思主义激活中华优秀传统文化中的无神论因子并赋予新的时代内涵，推动自强不息、以民为本、人文理性、经世致用等一系列无神论资源的创造性转化和创新性发展，将中国无神论的精髓精华更深层次地注入马克思主义无神论，推动马克思主义无神论研究和宣传教育工作取得新的进展，不断谱写马克思主义无神论中国化时代化的新篇章。

In his address, Gong Yun emphasized that we must fully and accurately understand the scientific connotation of “the Two Integrations,” profoundly grasp the great significance of “the Two Integrations,” and then, guided by “the Two Integrations,” promote the high-quality development of the cause of Marxist atheism in the New Era. We must adhere to the combination of theory and practice, deeply study the basic principles of Marxist atheism, and, from the height of civilization, advance the integration of the basic principles of Marxist atheism with China’s specific realities and with fine traditional Chinese culture. We hope that through our conference, more people will establish the scientific worldview of Marxist atheism, accept the healthy lifestyle of Marxist atheism, consolidate the atheist ideological foundation of the modern civilization of the Chinese nation, and strive to create a new form of human civilization.

In the breakout session segment, participating scholars, guided by Marxism, deeply excavated existing academic achievements and engaged in exchange and discussion around topics such as scientific atheism and Chinese-path modernization, atheist thought in fine traditional Chinese culture, and the necessity and practical pathways of Marxist atheism education, providing multi-dimensional perspectives and multiple pathways for unswervingly carrying out atheism education.

在分论坛环节，与会学者以马克思主义为指导，深入挖掘已有学术成果，围绕科学无神论与中国式现代化、中华优秀传统文化中的无神论思想、马克思主义无神论教育的必要性及现实路径等方面开展交流探讨，为坚定不移开展无神论教育提供了多维角度和多重路径。

In the summary session of the conference, Huang Yanhong outlined three characteristics of this meeting: focusing on disciplinary directions, addressing practical issues, and supporting young scholars. She also summarized the development of the scientific atheism discipline and the status of academic platforms such as the annual conference and forum using six words: "gratitude," "dedication," "persistence," "confidence," "development," and "thanks," encouraging young scholars to join the construction of the scientific atheism discipline. Overall, this forum, centered on the theme of "'the Two Integrations' [3]3 The Two Integrations (两个结合) refers to the principle of integrating the basic tenets of Marxism with China's specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture, as articulated by Xi Jinping. and Marxist Atheism in the New Era," showcased the latest achievements in the theory and practice of scientific atheism in the New Era, helping the academic community advance research on Marxist religious theory, consolidate the guiding role of Marxism in the ideological domain, and demonstrate the vigorous vitality and robust dynamism of Marxist atheism in the New Era.
