At present, the theme-based education on studying and implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is being carried out across the entire Party, and “studying the thought” is the primary aspect of the general requirements for carrying out the theme-based education. As the Marxism of contemporary China and the Marxism of the twenty-first century, as the quintessence of Chinese culture and the Chinese spirit for the times, and as the latest achievement in the Party’s innovative theory, Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era possesses a unique and distinct theoretical character, which centrally reflects the worldview and methodology of this thought and manifests its features and strengths. Deeply grasping the theoretical character of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as a whole is the foundation for “comprehensively and systematically mastering the basic viewpoints and scientific system of this thought, grasping its worldview and methodology well, and adhering to and applying the standpoints, viewpoints, and methods that run through it,” and is also the prerequisite for “continuously enhancing political, ideological, theoretical, and emotional identification with the Party’s innovative theory.”

The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC points out: “The people-centered nature is the essential attribute of Marxism; the Party’s theory is a theory that comes from the people, serves the people, and benefits the people, and the people’s creative practice is the inexhaustible source of theoretical innovation.” The Communist Party of China, guided by Marxism, has since its founding set “striving to make the common people live a good life” as its goal of struggle, maintaining flesh-and-blood ties with the masses of the people, and singing a deep song of sharing hearts, breathing, and destiny with the people. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has remained true to its original aspiration and founding mission, always adhered to a people-centered approach, and committed itself to safeguarding, realizing, and developing the fundamental interests of the broadest majority of the people. Whether it is “not a single person can be left behind” in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, or “not a single person can be allowed to fall behind on the road to common prosperity,” or adhering to “putting the people and their lives above all else” in fighting major epidemics, all vividly demonstrate the sincere sentiment of being close to the people, loving the people, worrying about the people, and serving the people. The people-centered governing practice benefits from the governing concept of putting the people first. The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC points out: “What we are engaged in is a great cause unprecedented in history; only by upholding fundamental principles can we avoid losing our direction and committing subversive errors, and only by breaking new ground can we grasp the times and lead the times.” The Communist Party of China has inherited the spiritual tradition of the Chinese nation of upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, endowing it with richer contemporary connotations under the guidance of Marxism. Over the more than one hundred years since its founding, the Party has adhered to emancipating the mind, seeking truth from facts, advancing with the times, and being realistic and pragmatic; on the basis of upholding truth and following laws, it has continuously promoted theoretical innovation and practical development, opened up new realms for the development of Marxism, and achieved brilliant successes in the development of the Party and the country. This thought is the result of upholding truth, testing truth, and developing truth, achieving a historic leap and creative sublimation in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times; it has also guided practice, bringing about historic changes and historic achievements in the cause of the Party and the country, which in turn fully proves the scientific nature and truth of this thought. The Communist Party of China has grown and strengthened in the process of continuously discovering, facing, analyzing, and solving problems, and has also advanced adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times by adhering to a problem-oriented approach, thereby resolving various contradictions and leading the Chinese people from standing up and growing rich to becoming strong. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, based in the New Era, has answered a series of major contemporary issues concerning the Party’s long-term governance, the country’s lasting peace and stability, and the people’s well-being and security with a strong problem awareness and a clear problem-oriented approach; resolved a series of prominent contradictions and problems that had accumulated over a long period or newly emerged; and pushed the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation into an irreversible historical process. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has taken the systems perspective as a foundational mode of thinking and working method, adhering to forward-looking thinking, overall planning, strategic layout, and holistic advancement, pushing the cause of the Party and the state to new heights, and leading the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics to achieve great historic accomplishments. On the whole, Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is itself a rigorous and complete ideological system, comprehensively and systematically answering a series of major theoretical and practical issues facing the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the New Era, manifesting the systematic, comprehensive, holistic, and logical nature of this thought; specifically, whether it is emphasizing “focusing on the systematic, comprehensive, and coordinated nature of reform,” or highlighting “establishing the idea of a national chessboard,” or clearly coordinating the “Four Greats” [1]1 The “Four Greats” (四个伟大) refers to the great struggle, the great project, the great cause, and the great dream., promoting the Five-Sphere Integrated Plan in a coordinated way, and advancing the Four-Pronged Comprehensive Strategy in a coordinated way, or putting forward the concept of keeping in mind the “Two Overall Situations” [2]2 The “Two Overall Situations” (两个大局) refers to the overall situation of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the overall situation of changes unseen in a century., and so on — these are not only concrete applications and contemporary manifestations of Marxist dialectical materialism, but also vivid interpretations of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era’s adherence to the systems perspective, manifesting the rigorous mode of thinking of this thought.

The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC points out: “The Communist Party of China is a party that seeks happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenation for the Chinese nation, and it is also a party that seeks progress for humanity and harmony for the world.” Guided by Marxism, a scientific theory that pursues human emancipation, the Communist Party of China has possessed a global vision and humanistic concern since its inception. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core has adhered to combining a foothold in China with a global perspective, paying attention with keen strategic vision to the major trends of human development, the great changes in the world landscape, and the grand history of China’s development. It has put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, promoted the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, shared China’s development dividends with the world, provided Chinese ideas for solving the global development deficit, and contributed Chinese solutions to the common problems facing humanity, enabling China to integrate into the world and the world to benefit from China. Reflected in theoretical construction, it not only specifically elucidates the close relationship between China and the world, but also, with a strong sense of responsibility as a major country, profoundly answers major questions concerning the future and destiny of humanity, such as “What is wrong with the world?”, “Where is humanity heading?”, and “What should we do?” It is imbued with deep reflection and sincere concern for world peace and development and the future and destiny of humanity, becoming an important content that manifests the grand vision of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. These contents not only inherit the concept of “all under heaven are one family” from fine traditional Chinese culture, but also carry forward the Communist Party of China’s spirit of responsibility of “taking the world as one’s own duty,” and expand the Marxist value pursuit of “seeking liberation for humanity,” displaying the broad-mindedness and global vision of Chinese Communists in the New Era, and becoming a prominent theoretical character of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.
