First World History Frontier Forum Held in Beijing

China Social Sciences Net News (Reporter Wang Chunyan) On September 12–13, the First World History Frontier Forum was held in Beijing. Gao Xiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Chinese Academy of History; Rebecca Lemos Igreja, Secretary-General of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences; and Costas Gouliamos, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

中国社会科学网讯（记者王春燕）9月12—13日，首届世界历史学前沿论坛在京召开。中国社会科学院院长、中国历史研究院院长高翔，拉丁美洲社会科学院秘书长丽贝卡·莱莫斯·伊格莱哈，欧洲科学与艺术学院院士、中国政府友谊奖获得者科斯塔斯·古利亚莫斯出席开幕式并致辞。

Gao Xiang pointed out that the historical culture of a country or nation, especially its core civilizational elements, always centrally manifests that country’s and nation’s value pursuits and historical character, becoming the deep inner support for that country’s and nation’s choice of path. Every civilization is irreplaceable in human history; the value concepts and ways of life of every country and nation should be respected, and each has the right to choose a development path suited to its own national conditions. Exchange and mutual learning should be promoted with a spirit of equality, respect, and tolerance, and the future should be won through exchange and mutual learning. At present, the dark clouds of Cold War mentality, hegemonism, and protectionism have not dispersed; new threats and new challenges are increasing rather than decreasing; the world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation; global governance has come to a new crossroads; and human society needs to draw on historical wisdom more than ever before. Historians must strengthen research on the development process of human civilization, scientifically analyze the past and present of different civilizations, and reveal the inner logic of civilizational evolution. With a lofty sense of responsibility and mission, they must grasp the direction of human civilization by looking back at history, scientifically answer the questions of the world, the people, and the times, explore paths for the coexistence and common prosperity of different civilizations, and contribute historical scholarship to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

高翔指出，一个国家、民族的历史文化，尤其是核心文明元素，总是集中彰显着这个国家、民族的价值追求和历史品格，成为这个国家、民族道路选择的内在深厚支撑。每一种文明在人类历史上都是不可替代的，每一个国家、民族的价值理念、生活方式都应该被尊重，都有权选择符合自身国情的发展道路。要以平等之心、尊重之心、宽容之心推动交流互鉴，在交流互鉴中赢得未来。当前，冷战思维、霸权主义、保护主义阴霾不散，新威胁新挑战有增无减，世界进入新的动荡变革期，全球治理走到新的十字路口，人类社会比以往任何时候都更需要汲取历史的智慧。历史学家要加强对人类文明发展历程的研究，科学辨析不同文明的过去和现在，揭示文明演进的内在逻辑。要以崇高的责任意识和使命担当，在回望历史中把握人类文明前进方向，科学回答好世界之问、人民之问、时代之问，探寻不同文明共生共荣的路径，为构建人类命运共同体贡献史学力量。

Rebecca Lemos Igreja stated that history is closely linked to the present and the future. Telling historical stories well is of great significance for different countries to join hands in addressing challenges in the future. World history should be written in a more pluralistic way; in particular, those marginalized historical cultures should not be ignored or forgotten. This requires our joint efforts to engage in cross-cultural dialogue. This forum has built a platform for communication and exchange, enabling scholars from different countries and regions to break through geographical and linguistic barriers, rethink world history from new perspectives, and thereby enhance mutual understanding, deepen cooperation, and promote the development of the discipline of history.

丽贝卡·莱莫斯·伊格莱哈表示，历史同现实、未来息息相关。讲好历史故事，对于未来不同国家携手应对挑战具有重要意义。世界历史应该以更加多元的方式书写，尤其是那些被边缘化的历史文化不应被漠视、被遗忘。这需要我们共同努力，展开跨文化对话。此次论坛搭建了沟通与交流的平台，不同国家和地区的学者突破地理、语言的障碍，以全新的视角重新思考世界历史，必将增进彼此间理解，深化彼此间合作，促进历史学科发展。

Costas Gouliamos stated that civilization is a “catalyst” for human progress. Throughout human history, civilization has always evolved through dialogue and exchange. Different civilizations need to understand each other, exchange and learn from one another, and jointly promote humanity toward a more balanced and inclusive future. In the 21st century, humanity is more closely connected than ever before. We should deeply study how different civilizations have influenced each other, and pursue peace, harmony, and cooperation while respecting civilizational diversity. Research methods from disciplines such as history, archaeology, anthropology, and sociology should be combined to deeply study the common heritage of humanity and promote the construction of a more inclusive global narrative.

科斯塔斯·古利亚莫斯表示，文明是人类进步的“催化剂”。纵观人类历史，文明始终在对话与交流中演进。不同文明需要彼此理解、交流互鉴，共同推动人类走向更加平衡与包容的未来。21世纪的今天，人类比以往任何时候都更加紧密相连。我们应深入研究不同文明之间是如何相互影响的，在尊重文明多样性的前提下追求和平、和谐、合作。要结合历史学、考古学、人类学、社会学等学科研究方法，深入研究人类共同遗产，推动构建更加包容的全球叙事。

This forum was themed “Civilizational Inheritance and Historical Paths.” Nearly 300 experts and scholars from China, the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Egypt, Japan, and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions participated in the forum. They engaged in in-depth dialogue, exchange, and intellectual collision around topics including “Diverse Models of the Origin and Development of Civilization,” “Civilizational Evolution and the Formation of Historical Paths,” “Modern China and the World in the Collision of Civilizations,” “Civilizational Diversity and the Choice of Different Historical Paths,” “The Historical Process and Contemporary Value of Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning,” “Cultural Integration and Dialogue and a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind,” and “Historical Paths and the Future of Human Civilization.”

此次论坛以“文明传承与历史道路”为主题。来自中国、美国、俄罗斯、法国、德国、埃及、日本等国家及港澳台地区的近300名专家学者参加论坛，围绕“文明起源与发展的多元模式”“文明演进与历史道路的形成”“文明碰撞中的近代中国与世界”“文明多样性与不同历史道路的选择”“文明交流互鉴的历史进程与时代价值”“文化交融对话与人类命运共同体”“历史之路与人类文明的未来”等议题深入对话交流、碰撞思想。

This forum was hosted by the Chinese Academy of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and organized by the Institute of Archaeology, Institute of Ancient History, Institute of Modern History, Institute of World History, Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies, Institute of Historical Theory, and the University of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
