Advancing the High-Quality Development of the Marxist Theory Discipline in the New Era — A Summary of the Symposium on the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Marxist Theory Discipline

On September 21, the symposium on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Marxist theory discipline, co-hosted by the Subject Evaluation Groups for Marxist Theory and for CPC History and Party Building under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and Xinjiang University, was held at Xinjiang University. This symposium aimed to review the two-decade development process of the Marxist theory discipline, summarize its achievements, and explore major theoretical and practical issues such as the connotative development path of the Marxist theory discipline in the New Era, its supporting role in ideological and political course construction, and the construction of an independent knowledge system, thereby pooling wisdom and building consensus to promote high-quality development of the discipline.

9月21日，由国务院学位委员会马克思主义理论、中共党史党建学学科评议组与新疆大学共同举办的马克思主义理论学科创立20周年主题研讨会在新疆大学举行。此次研讨会旨在回顾马克思主义理论学科二十载发展历程，总结马克思主义理论学科发展成就，探讨新时代马克思主义理论学科的内涵式发展路径、对思政课建设的支撑作用以及自主知识体系构建等重大理论和实践问题，为推动学科高质量发展汇聚智慧、凝聚共识。

Historical Retrospect: The Strategic Position and Outstanding Contributions of the Marxist Theory Discipline

历史回眸：马克思主义理论学科的战略地位与卓著贡献

Participating experts reviewed the achievements of the Marxist theory discipline since its establishment and unanimously agreed that over the past 20 years, the discipline has achieved a leap from laying a foundation to flourishing development, yielding fruitful results in disciplinary layout, theoretical innovation, and talent cultivation, while also promoting the construction of an autonomous, multi-level disciplinary system.

与会专家回顾了马克思主义理论学科创立以来取得的成就，一致认为，20年来，马克思主义理论学科实现了从奠基起步到繁荣发展的跨越，在学科布局、理论创新、人才培养等方面硕果累累，并推动了自主性、多层次的学科体系构建。

Wu Huaichun, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Degree Management and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Education and Deputy Director of the Office of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, pointed out that the Marxist theory discipline is a foundational and leading discipline that highlights Chinese characteristics, Chinese style, and Chinese manner, bearing the major mission of systematically studying the basic principles of Marxism, implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education [1]1 "Fostering virtue through education" (立德树人) is a fundamental task of education in China, emphasizing the cultivation of moral character and talent., and providing theoretical support for national governance and social development. Professor Jin Nuo of Renmin University of China proposed that the significant development of the disciplinary system and layout, the construction of an excellent teaching staff, the establishment of an integrated undergraduate-master-doctoral talent cultivation system, and the deepening of Marxist theoretical research are notable markers of the discipline's 20-year development achievements. Professor Huang Rongsheng of Southwest University argued that disciplinary construction is a fundamental requirement for flourishing philosophy and social sciences, and also a crucial lever for implementing the Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project [2]2 The Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project (马克思主义理论研究和建设工程) is a major national initiative launched in 2004 to strengthen the study, interpretation, and dissemination of Marxism in China. and strengthening ideological and political education for university students.

教育部学位管理与研究生教育司副司长、国务院学位委员会办公室副主任吴怀春指出，马克思主义理论学科是彰显中国特色、中国风格、中国气派的基础性和引领性学科，肩负着系统研究马克思主义基本原理、落实立德树人根本任务、为国家治理和社会发展提供理论支撑的重大使命。中国人民大学靳诺教授提出，学科体系和布局的大发展、优秀师资队伍的建设、本硕博一体化人才培养体系的建立以及马克思主义理论研究的深化，是学科20年发展成就的显著标志。西南大学黄蓉生教授认为，学科建设是繁荣哲学社会科学的根本要求，也是实施马克思主义理论研究和建设工程、加强大学生思想政治教育的重要抓手。

On the new journey, the strategic position of the Marxist theory discipline is increasingly prominent. Professor Dong Hui of Huazhong University of Science and Technology pointed out that General Secretary Xi Jinping's important expositions on the Marxist theory discipline have clarified its strategic positioning; the construction of the Marxist theory discipline embodies the most distinctive foundation of Chinese universities, serves as the main front for consolidating the guiding position of Marxism in the ideological domain, and constitutes a foundational and strategic project for the Party's ideological and theoretical construction. Professor Luo Yuting of Wuhan University and Boyuan Strategic Talent of Xinjiang University pointed out that the Marxist theory discipline has played an important role in advancing theoretical innovation, exerting the core function of mainstream ideology in establishing the foundation for the nation and the soul for the people [3]3 "Establishing the foundation for the nation and the soul for the people" (为国家立心、为民族立魂) is a phrase emphasizing the role of ideology in providing a spiritual foundation and guiding principles for the country and its people., implementing the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, and strengthening international communication and enhancing international discourse power.

新征程上，马克思主义理论学科的战略地位日益凸显。华中科技大学董慧教授指出，习近平总书记关于马克思主义理论学科的重要论述明确了学科的战略定位，马克思主义理论学科建设体现了我国大学最鲜亮的底色，是巩固马克思主义在意识形态领域指导地位的主阵地，是党的思想理论建设的基础性、战略性工程。武汉大学教授、新疆大学博峰战略人才骆郁廷指出，马克思主义理论学科在推进理论创新，发挥主流意识形态为国家立心、为民族立魂的核心作用，落实立德树人根本任务，以及加强国际传播、增强国际话语权等方面都发挥了重要作用。

The conference also discussed the supporting role of the Marxist theory discipline for ideological and political theory courses in higher education. Professor Ai Silin of Tsinghua University argued that the Marxist theory discipline provides important support for ideological and political course construction in terms of layout, platforms, faculty, and achievements. He proposed that this supporting role should be further strengthened by reinforcing the promotion mechanism between disciplinary construction and course construction, constructing a high-quality disciplinary evaluation system, coordinating the development of Marxist theory and CPC history and Party building disciplines, and distinguishing between academic and professional talent cultivation models.

会议还讨论了马克思主义理论学科对高校思想政治理论课的支撑作用。清华大学艾四林教授认为，马克思主义理论学科在布局、平台、师资和成果方面为思政课建设提供了重要支撑，并提出，应通过强化学科建设与课程建设的促进机制、构建高质量学科评价体系、统筹马克思主义理论与中共党史党建学科协调发展、区分学术型和专业型人才培养模式等途径，进一步强化支撑作用。

Upholding Fundamental Principles and Breaking New Ground: The Core Essence and Path Exploration of High-Quality Development

守正创新：高质量发展的核心要义与路径探索

Adhering to upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground is an important guideline for advancing the high-quality development of the Marxist theory discipline in the New Era. Professor Jin Nuo pointed out that disciplinary development must adhere to upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground, focus on solving prominent problems such as insufficient research innovation and unbalanced development, and comprehensively improve the effectiveness of ideological and political course teaching, as well as the quality and international perspective of the integrated undergraduate-master-doctoral talent cultivation system. Professor Wang Yonggui of Nanjing Normal University argued that promoting high-quality disciplinary development should integrate research directions and optimize disciplinary layout, proposing that ideological and political course teaching should organically combine technological empowerment with value guidance. Professor Wang Shuyin of Beijing Normal University pointed out that disciplinary construction should systematically examine and scientifically define the construction scope and research directions of the discipline of basic principles of Marxism; ideological and political course teaching requires comprehensive support and synergistic empowerment from various secondary disciplines; and the secondary disciplines and their research directions should be scientifically planned to enhance internal logical consistency and theoretical persuasiveness. Professor Luo Yuting proposed that promoting disciplinary development should properly handle several pairs of relationships: between connotative development and denotative expansion, between theoretical research and practical application, between independent construction and open reference, and between disciplinary construction and ideological and political course teaching. Professor Zang Xiuling of Shandong University, focusing on the topic of refining the discipline's signature concepts by returning to the classics and grounding them in practice, discussed specific links for promoting high-quality disciplinary development from a micro level.

坚持守正创新是新时代推进马克思主义理论学科高质量发展的重要遵循。靳诺教授指出，学科发展必须坚持守正创新，着力解决好科研创新不足、发展不平衡等突出问题，全面提升思政课教学实效性及本硕博一体化人才培养的质量和国际视野。南京师范大学王永贵教授认为，推动学科高质量发展应整合研究方向、优化学科布局，提出思政课教学应将技术赋能与价值引领有机结合。北京师范大学王树荫教授指出，学科建设应系统审视并科学界定马克思主义基本原理学科的建设范畴与研究方向，思政课教学需要各二级学科的综合支撑与协同赋能，应科学规划二级学科及其研究方向，增强学科内部逻辑一致性与学理说服力。骆郁廷教授提出，推动学科发展应妥善处理好内涵发展与外延拓展、理论研究与实践应用、自主建设与开放借鉴、学科建设与思政课教学等几对关系。山东大学臧秀玲教授则围绕提炼学科标识性概念应回归经典、立足实践的话题，从微观层面探讨了推动学科高质量发展的具体环节。

To promote high-quality and innovative development of the Marxist theory discipline, it is necessary to adhere to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as the guide and take the Two Integrations as the fundamental path. Professor Lin Jinping of Sun Yat-sen University pointed out that understanding and developing the basic principles of Marxism requires considering secondary disciplines and dimensions such as the history of Marxism, the study of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context, and the study of Marxism abroad, while also focusing on incorporating important contemporary concepts to respond to the issues of the times. Professor Yan Lianfu of Xi'an Jiaotong University argued that the Marxist theory discipline already possesses the conditions for constructing an independent knowledge system; it should be based on China's actual conditions, respond to the questions of the times, use Marxism to activate the vital factors within excellent traditional Chinese culture and endow them with new contemporary connotations, thereby solidifying the academic foundation.

推进马克思主义理论学科高质量、创新性发展，必须坚持以习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想为指导，以“两个结合”为根本路径。中山大学林进平教授指出，理解和发展马克思主义基本原理，需兼顾马克思主义发展史、马克思主义中国化研究、国外马克思主义研究等二级学科和维度，并注重吸纳当代重要概念以回应时代问题。西安交通大学燕连福教授认为，马克思主义理论学科已具备自主知识体系构建条件，应立足中国实际，回应时代之问，用马克思主义激活中华优秀传统文化中富有生命力的优秀因子并赋予其新的时代内涵，筑牢学术根基。

The characteristic development of Marxist theory discipline construction in local universities was also a focus of the symposium. Professor Zhu Huanghe of Jiangxi Normal University argued that local universities need to find their positioning based on actual conditions, refine their characteristics, focus on talent cultivation, and strengthen inter-collegiate exchange and cooperation. Professor Li Youxin of Xiangtan University further pointed out that local universities developing the Marxist theory discipline should combine regional characteristics, red cultural resource characteristics, and industry background characteristics, while also paying attention to the integrity and standardization of content.

地方高校马克思主义理论学科建设的特色发展也是研讨会关注的焦点。江西师范大学祝黄河教授认为，地方高校马克思主义理论学科需根据实际情况，找准定位，凝练特色，注重人才培养，加强院际交流合作。湘潭大学李佑新教授进一步指出，地方高校发展马克思主义理论学科要结合区域特色、红色文化资源特色、行业背景特色，同时注重内容上的整体性、规范性。

Charting the Future: Construction of an Independent Knowledge System and Enhancement of International Discourse Power

擘画未来：自主知识体系构建与国际话语权提升

Looking ahead to the future development of the discipline, participating experts unanimously agreed that efforts should focus on multiple dimensions under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, including deepening theoretical innovation, optimizing talent cultivation, properly handling internal disciplinary relationships, and enhancing international discourse power. Professor Liu Honglin of Fudan University argued that the fundamental principle of integrating theory with practice and applying knowledge to practical affairs should be upheld, and disciplinary boundaries and awareness should be maintained. Professor Song Jin of East China Normal University proposed that disciplinary self-awareness should be continuously enhanced through historical, knowledge-based, and international perspectives. Professor Zhang Shihai of Shandong University argued that strengthening the systematic and theoretical research and interpretation of the Party's innovative theories is the foundation for enhancing theoretical support. Professor Wang Binglin of Beijing Normal University pointed out that to enhance the international discourse power and influence of the Marxist theory discipline, it is necessary to advocate an objective and rational academic attitude, scientifically identify and absorb outstanding achievements from other countries, strengthen international exchange and cooperation, and construct an academic discourse system that integrates China and the West. Professor Wan Meirong of Central China Normal University argued that to improve the quality of talent cultivation in the discipline of ideological and political education, it is necessary to accurately grasp social needs, refine disciplinary directions, optimize the cultivation process, and enhance teachers' academic level and sense of responsibility in educating people.

展望学科未来发展，与会专家一致认为，应在习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想指导下，聚焦深化理论创新、优化人才培养、处理好学科内部关系以及提升国际话语权等多个维度。复旦大学刘红凛教授认为，应守住理论联系实际、经世致用的根本，坚守学科边界和学科意识。华东师范大学宋进教授提出，应以历史视野、知识视野和国际视野，不断提升学科自觉。山东大学张士海教授认为，加强党的创新理论体系化、学理化研究阐释，是提升学理支撑的基础。北京师范大学王炳林教授指出，增强马克思主义理论学科的国际话语权和影响力，需倡导客观理性的学术态度，科学辨识和吸收他国优秀成果，强化国际交流合作，构建融通中西的学术话语体系。华中师范大学万美容教授认为，提升思想政治教育学科人才培养质量，需准确把握社会需求，凝练学科方向，优化培养过程，提升教师学术水平与育人责任感。

Regarding understanding and clarifying the relationship between the Marxist theory discipline and the discipline of CPC history and Party building, Professor Yang Fengcheng of Renmin University of China argued that the discipline of CPC history and Party building and the Marxist theory discipline should cooperate, support, and complement each other; the history part can provide historical support for the Marxist theory discipline, while the Party building part requires theoretical support from the Marxist theory discipline. Professor Cheng Meidong of Peking University suggested that research on frontier issues in the discipline of CPC history and Party building should adhere to the principle of integrating "Party history" and "Party building," serve national strategic needs, and conduct research centered on Chinese-path modernization and other topics.

在理解和厘清马克思主义理论学科与中共党史党建学学科的关系方面，中国人民大学杨凤城教授认为，中共党史党建学与马克思主义理论学科应相互合作、相互支持、相互成就，党史部分可为马克思主义理论学科提供历史支撑，党建部分则需要马克思主义理论学科的理论支撑。北京大学程美东教授建议，中共党史党建学前沿问题研究要坚持“党史”与“党建”相贯通原则，服务国家战略需要，围绕中国式现代化等展开研究。

Participating experts unanimously agreed that, on the new journey, the Marxist theory discipline must take Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its guide, focus on the task of high-quality development, optimize the disciplinary layout and evaluation mechanisms, build a synergy among disciplines, curricula, teachers, and teaching materials, promote the construction of an autonomous knowledge system for the discipline, continuously enhance international communication capacity and discursive power, drive systematic innovation in the content, discourse, and methods of the Marxist theory discipline, provide solid theoretical and talent guarantees for consolidating the guiding position of Marxism in the ideological domain, improving the educational effectiveness of ideological and political courses, serving national governance, and advancing the construction of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, and contribute wisdom and strength to realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
