Fruitful Results in Exploring the Cultural Dimension of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind

The history of human society is an evolutionary process in which “real individuals” and nature, as well as society, mutually achieve and constrain one another. Humans promote social development in the course of forming and transcending themselves; under the influence of real conditions, human society gradually evolves from a “natural community” to an “illusory community” and then to a “true community,” and culture likewise undergoes a transformative process from communication barriers and ethnic conflicts to crossing boundaries and moving toward identification. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, [1]1 The 18th National Congress of the CPC was held in 2012, marking the beginning of the New Era under Xi Jinping’s leadership. in response to the major question of what kind of world to build and how to build it, General Secretary Xi Jinping has put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and has made a series of important expositions and deeply advanced concrete practices around this concept. The monograph *Research on the Cultural Construction and International Identification of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind* by Professor Liu Tongfang, recently published by the People’s Publishing House, is precisely a fruitful result centered on this important concept.

人类社会的历史是“现实的人”与自然界、社会相互成就、相互制约的演进过程。人类在形成自我并超越自我的过程中推动社会发展，人类社会在现实条件作用下逐渐实现从“天然共同体”到“虚幻共同体”以至“真正共同体”的演进，文化也随之经历从交流障碍、民族冲突到跨越边界、走向认同的蝶变进程。党的十八大以来，面对建设一个什么样的世界、如何建设这个世界的重大课题，习近平总书记提出构建人类命运共同体理念，并围绕这一理念作出一系列重要论述，深入推进具体实践。人民出版社近期出版的刘同舫教授专著《人类命运共同体的文化构建与国际认同研究》，正是围绕这一重要理念推出的有益成果。

It manifests a realistic concern for problem-orientation and practical construction. Taking problems as its guide and based on a long-term, multi-ethnic historical investigation, the book explores from a macro level how culture shapes the international identification of a community with a shared future for mankind. The author precisely grasps the overall positioning of the current global cultural environment and the pattern of world civilization, clarifies the realistic direction and contemporary tasks of the cultural construction of a community with a shared future for mankind, and demonstrates a historical self-consciousness in conducting theoretical research with a problem-orientation. The book is divided into two volumes, with main contents including: preliminary clarification, “mother” resources and their innovation, realistic direction and contemporary tasks, historical evolution and principle confirmation, realistic possibilities and construction strategies, and so on. These parts are interlinked and progressively layered, moving from a review of the many “community” categories and their status in Marx’s era, to a reflection on the existing forms of social ideals in traditional Chinese thought, and then grasping the community with a shared future for mankind as a product of the Two Integrations, [2]2 The Two Integrations refers to the integration of the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture. revealing its historical connection with Marx’s “true community” and the traditional culture of the Great Harmony society, thereby uncovering the relationship between realistic construction and the theory of historical philosophy. By elucidating the core issue of “cultural construction as a historical existence and practical mode of humanity,” the book clarifies the universal historicity of humanity’s practice of constructing communities, demonstrating the author’s historical awareness in examining practical issues through the lens of philosophical and social scientific methods.

彰显问题导向与实践建构的现实观照。该书以问题为导向，立足长时段、多民族的历史考察，从宏观层面探讨文化如何塑造人类命运共同体的国际认同。作者在书中精准把握当今全球文化环境和世界文明格局的总体性定位，明确人类命运共同体文化构建的现实指向与当代任务，彰显了以问题导向展开理论研究的历史自觉。全书分为上下两卷，主要内容包括：前提性阐明、“母体”资源及其创新、现实指向与当代任务、历史演变与原则确证、现实可能与构建策略等。这些部分环环相扣、层层递进，从对马克思所处时代诸多“共同体”范畴及现状的回顾，到对中国传统思想中社会理想的存在形态的省思，进而把握人类命运共同体作为“两个结合”的产物，与马克思“真正的共同体”和传统文化大同社会之间的历史关联，揭示了现实建构与历史哲学理论的关系。该书通过阐释“文化构建作为人类的历史性存在与实践方式”这一核心问题，阐明了人类建构共同体实践的普遍历史性，展现了作者运用哲学社会科学方法审视实践问题的历史意识。

Combining the history of social development with the history of philosophy, the book conducts in-depth reflection on practical issues based on the era, exploring the epochal background faced by the cultural construction of a community with a shared future for mankind: it both analyzes the overall development status of world history based on the grand epochal background of changes unseen in a century, and, grounded in the phased background of socialism with Chinese characteristics entering a New Era, dissects the realistic circumstances at the economic, political, and cultural levels, reflecting an academic concern and responsibility that closely follows the themes of the times, examines modern society, and looks toward the future of humanity. The book opens with “Preliminary Clarification of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind,” sorting out and analyzing the community with a shared future for mankind and related views on social forms from the perspective of historical materialism. From the overall process of world history, researchers in different periods have had vastly different understandings of “community.” The book treats the cultural thesis of a community with a shared future for mankind as a topic of “the era grasped in thought,” analyzing practical issues and contemporary missions from three dimensions: the foundation of ontology, the support of epistemology, and the standpoint of axiology. It displays an open vision of comparative thinking and mutual learning among civilizations. A community with a shared future for mankind is a concept of human social development proposed under the guidance of the Marxist theory of world history and the view of civilization, deeply grasping the laws of contemporary global development, while also being established on the basis of a dialectical sublation of traditional Chinese thought and Western theories. Comparative thinking naturally becomes an important method for exploring the cultural construction and international identification of a community with a shared future for mankind. The book examines the cultural construction of a community with a shared future for mankind in comparison with various cultural forms of the world, and on this basis explores the continuous characteristics of Chinese civilization, the reasons for the interruption of other civilizations, and the future direction of human social existence and civilizational creation. The first volume, by discussing the actual state of the world civilizational order and the generation of cultural construction and community legitimacy, reveals the trend of transformation from cultural encounter to mutual learning among civilizations in the process of human civilizational history—that is, the state in which different national cultures gradually form co-existence and equal interaction through construction; the second volume, by elucidating the connotative direction in the dialectical movement of the “self” and the “other,” uncovers the internal laws of the continuous generation of meaning in the process of mutual learning among different civilizations. This reflects the author’s world vision in being adept at summarizing universal laws through pluralistic comparison. When explaining the international community’s identification with a community with a shared future for mankind, the author deeply studies the internal connections among common values, cultural construction, and international identification, confirming the inevitable process by which different countries recognize common values, actively participate in cultural construction, and reach a world consensus in concrete practice, thereby confirming the overall trend of promoting mutual learning among civilizations and realizing the symbiosis of cultural meaning.

In summary, starting from clarifying the historical positioning of a community with a shared future for mankind and explaining the dialectical relationship between cultural construction and international identification, the book advances layer by layer in its discourse, unfolds in an orderly manner in its logical thread, and from the perspective of human social development and civilizational progress, deeply studies the theoretical construction and realistic path of a community with a shared future for mankind. It is an excellent work that integrates history and reality, facts and values, the era and currents of thought into an organic whole in a crisscrossing manner.
