To date, the published works in Volume 8 include five titles: *The Root Causes, Lessons, and Implications of the Collapse of the Soviet Union and the Demise of Its Party*; *A Brief History of China’s Socialist System*; *The History of New China Is a Required Course for Upholding and Developing Socialism with Chinese Characteristics*; *The Second International and the Theory and Practice of the World Socialist Movement*; and *Several Fundamental Issues in the Marxist Theory of Productive Forces — Reflections Based on the Subjectivity of Labor*. These works conduct research around the core issues of socialist theory and practice, respectively analyzing the root causes and lessons of the Soviet Union’s party collapse and state dissolution, sorting out the developmental
《居安思危·世界社会主义小丛书》第八辑，由当代中国出版社陆续出版。目前，第八辑已出版的作品包括《苏联亡党亡国的根本原因、教训与启示》《中国社会主义制度简史》《新中国史是坚持和发展中国特色社会主义的必修课》《第二国际与世界社会主义运动的理论和实践》《马克思主义生产力理论若干基本问题——基于劳动主体性的思考》等5种。这些著作围绕社会主义理论与实践的核心议题展开研究，分别剖析苏联亡党亡国的根源教训、梳理中国社会主义制度的发展脉络与独特优势、阐明学习新中国史对坚持和发展中国特色社会主义的重要意义、聚焦第二国际的兴衰及其对世界社会主义运动的影响、阐释马克思主义生产力理论的核心内涵与现实价值。
This series is edited by Li Shenming as chief editor and Chen Zhihua as executive editor. Since its inception in 2012, the series has been published up to the eighth volume, comprising 75 titles. It is a set of theoretical reading materials offered to the broad readership by the World Socialism Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, aimed at popularizing the common knowledge of scientific socialism, and also a set of serious theoretical works carefully written by relevant experts and scholars from within and outside the academy over long-term research. Although it is a "pocket" series, it addresses major theoretical and practical issues both domestically and internationally, primarily introducing innovations in the basic theories and important viewpoints of scientific socialism, major historical events and key leading figures in the international communist movement, and the current theories, practices, and development trends of communist parties in major countries. It mainly reflects socialist theory and practice abroad today, while also including the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics. To adapt to the fast pace of modern life, each book is generally limited to around 40,000 characters. Such a length helps readers finish reading it in one sitting during their spare time or while traveling.
该丛书由李慎明任主编、陈之骅任执行主编。自2012年问世以来，丛书已出版到第八辑第75本。这是中国社会科学院世界社会主义研究中心奉献给广大读者的一套普及科学社会主义常识的理论读物，也是我们集中院内外相关专家学者长期研究、精心撰写的一套严肃的理论著作。虽是一套“小”丛书，涉及的却是国内外重大理论和现实问题，主要介绍科学社会主义基本理论及重要观点的创新、国际共产主义运动中重大历史事件和重要领袖人物、各主要国家共产党当今理论实践及发展趋势等，以反映国外当今社会主义理论与实践为主，同时包括中国特色社会主义伟大事业。为适应快节奏的现代生活，每册书的字数一般限定在4万字左右。这样的篇幅，有助于读者在工作之余或旅行途中一次看完。

It is also a set of serious theoretical works, the fruit of long-term research and careful composition by relevant experts and scholars both within and outside the Academy.

This is a “small” book series, yet it addresses major theoretical and practical issues both at home and abroad. It primarily introduces innovations in the basic theories of scientific socialism and important viewpoints, major historical events and key leading figures (including negative characters) in the international communist movement, and the current theoretical practices and development trends of communist parties in major countries. It also answers related perplexing questions that often arise in people’s minds. The series focuses mainly on reflecting contemporary socialist theory and practice abroad, while also covering China’s revolution, construction, and reform and opening up.
这是一套“小”丛书，涉及的却是国内外重大理论和现实问题。主要介绍科学社会主义基本理论及重要观点的创新、国际共产主义运动中重大历史事件和重要领袖人物（其中包括反面角色）、各主要国家共产党当今理论实践及发展趋势等，兼以回答人们心头常常涌现的相关疑难问题，并以反映国外当今社会主义理论与实践为主，兼顾我国的革命、建设和改革开放事业。
In a certain sense, popular theoretical works are more difficult to write. Focusing on a series of major theoretical and practical issues concerning scientific socialism, especially world socialism, and within a limited space, using popular, fresh, and vivid language to clearly explain the essence and laws of things—covering the argument, evidence, and reasoning process—so as to attract and persuade readers, is truly no easy task. This is undoubtedly a challenge for professional theoretical workers. Nevertheless, we are willing to make the effort.
从一定意义上讲，理论普及读物更难撰写。围绕科学社会主义特别是世界社会主义一系列重大理论和现实问题，在有限的篇幅内，把立论、论据和论证过程等，用通俗、清新、生动的语言将事物本质与规律讲清楚，做到吸引人、说服人，实非易事。这无疑是对专业理论工作者的一个挑战。然而，我们愿意为此作出努力。
The root cause of the ongoing deepening international financial crisis is the sharp polarization between rich and poor globally following the drastic changes in Eastern Europe and the collapse of the Party and state in the Soviet Union. The international financial crisis has now lasted a full ten years. But in the author’s view, even after another eight or ten years, the shadow of the international financial crisis will still linger. This is mainly because the new high-tech revolution represented by “Internet + artificial intelligence” and the birth and development of new means of production have greatly enhanced social productive forces on a global scale, but have also exacerbated the polarization of wealth possession and income distribution between rich and poor globally. As Marx emphasized: in capitalist society, “all progress in civilization, or in other words, every increase in social productive forces (or, what is the same thing, in the productive forces of labor itself)—such as advances in science, inventions, the division and combination of labor, improvements in means of communication, the creation of the world market, machinery, etc.—does not enrich the worker but rather enriches capital.” [1] This means that within the framework of capitalist relations of production, in general and in essence, the richer capital becomes, the poorer the broad masses of working people inevitably become; the poorer the broad masses of working people become, the more effective social demand inevitably decreases. The economic globalization led by the Western capitalist world, with the United States at its head, inevitably makes the broad masses of people globally increasingly poorer, sharply reducing relative social demand. We can also make this prediction: in the next twenty to thirty years, on a global scale, a large number of intelligent robots will increasingly crowd out existing manual jobs, and unmanned factories will spring up like mushrooms around the world. This process may be much faster than ordinary people imagine; its coverage may be far broader than ordinary people imagine. Just think, if capitalists no longer hire workers and ordinary people have no wages, who will buy these high-quality, low-cost products? The brutal competition among monopoly capital groups for high profits—spurring new high-tech development, especially the spread of intelligent robots—leading to massive new unemployment among workers—reduced relative social demand—causing more factory bankruptcies and worker unemployment—further reducing new relative social demand—triggering more factory bankruptcies. This logic will inevitably form round after round of vicious cycles, continuously exacerbating the polarization between rich and poor globally. The international financial crisis that erupted in 2008 is in essence a comprehensive crisis of capitalism’s economy, politics, and cultural values. It is a general eruption of the fundamental contradiction of capitalism between highly developed social productive forces—that is, the socialization of production and even the globalization of production—and the existing relations of production, namely the means of production being owned by a tiny minority. History has repeatedly proven that this fundamental contradiction cannot be resolved within the framework of capitalist relations of production. As this contradiction continues to develop and deepen, it can be asserted that greater financial disasters will inevitably erupt in succession in the years immediately following.
目前这场正在深化的国际金融危机的总根源，是东欧剧变和苏联亡党亡国之后全球范围内贫富两极的急遽分化。国际金融危机已经整整10个年头。但在笔者看来，再过8年、10年，国际金融危机的阴影也仍然挥之不去。主要是因为以“互联网+人工智能”等为代表的新的高科技革命和新的生产工具的诞生与发展，极大地提高了全球范围内的社会生产力，但同时也加剧了全球范围内的财富占有和收入分配的贫富两极分化。正如马克思所强调的：在资本主义社会，“文明的一切进步，或者换句话说，社会生产力（也可以说劳动本身的生产力）的任何增长，——例如科学、发明、劳动的分工和结合、交通工具的改善、世界市场的开辟、机器等等，——都不会使工人致富，而只会使资本致富”。这也就是说，在资本主义生产关系框架之内，从总体和本质上说，资本愈是富有，广大劳动群众则必然愈是贫穷；广大劳动群众愈是贫穷，社会的有效需求则必然愈加减少。以美国为首的西方资本主义世界主导的经济全球化，必然使全球范围内广大民众愈加贫穷，社会的相对需求急遽减少。我们还可以作出这样的预言：在未来二三十年内，在全球范围内，大量的智能机器人会更多地挤占现有的人工工作岗位，无人工厂会如雨后春笋般地在世界各地涌现。这一进程，可能比我们常人所想象的要快得多；其覆盖面，可能比我们常人想象的要更为广阔。试想，资本家都不雇佣工人了，普通百姓都没有工资了，谁来购买这些物美价廉的产品呢？各垄断资本集团之间追寻高额利润的残酷竞争——引发新的高新科技发展特别是智能机器人的普及——导致新的工人大量失业——社会相对需求减少——引发更多工厂破产和工人失业——加剧减少新的社会相对需求——进一步触发新的工厂破产，这一逻辑必然会形成一轮又一轮的恶性循环，不断加剧全球范围内的贫富两极分化。2008年爆发的国际金融危机在本质上就是资本主义的经济、政治和文化价值观的全面危机，是高度发达的社会生产力即生产社会化乃至生产全球化与现存的生产关系即生产资料被极少数人占有这一资本主义基本矛盾的一次总爆发。历史已经反复证明，这一基本矛盾在资本主义生产关系的框架内根本无法解决。随着这一矛盾的不断发展和深化，可以断言，更大的金融灾难必将在紧随其后的一些年内接连爆发。
Leaning on the railing, quietly listening to the drizzling rain, the world’s people are deep in thought. [2] This crisis is driving people from all countries and all walks of life—especially ordinary people in developed countries and the vast number of developing countries—to think further and more deeply. It can be said that another spring breeze of a great ideological liberation of humanity has already risen from the tips of green duckweed. [3] However, spring often brings “late spring cold snaps”; under specific conditions, human society may also encounter new and greater disasters, and world socialism may yet step into new and deeper troughs. But we firmly believe that green hills cannot hide it—after all, it will flow eastward. [4] Around the middle of the 21st century, world socialism is highly likely to see another incomparably splendid spring. Our small book series aspires to be the heralding bird of this spring.
