Inspiring the Spiritual Strength to Advance Chinese-Path Modernization

Spirit is the soul on which a nation relies for long-term survival. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized in the report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC: “Promote the spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists, which originates from the great founding spirit of the Party.” [1]1 The “great founding spirit of the Party” refers to the spirit of the Communist Party of China formed during its founding in 1921, characterized by adherence to truth, ideals, and the original aspiration and founding mission. The spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists embodies the Party’s fine traditions and work style, providing an inexhaustible source of spiritual strength for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. To advance Chinese-path modernization, we must vigorously promote the spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists originating from the great founding spirit of the Party, draw forward momentum from it, and inspire Party members and cadres to forge ahead with enterprise and innovation, continuously achieving new breakthroughs and progress in the development of our cause.

精神是一个民族赖以长久生存的灵魂。习近平总书记在党的二十大报告中强调：“弘扬以伟大建党精神为源头的中国共产党人精神谱系”。中国共产党人精神谱系集中体现党的优良传统和作风，为实现中华民族伟大复兴提供了源源不断的精神力量。推进中国式现代化，要大力弘扬以伟大建党精神为源头的中国共产党人精神谱系，从中汲取前进动力，激励广大党员干部锐意进取、开拓创新，不断取得事业发展新突破新进展。

Maintain an unshakable ideal and conviction. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “The reason I constantly emphasize firm ideals and convictions is that this is a fundamental issue concerning the spiritual strength and future destiny of a Marxist political party and a socialist country.” [2]2 This quote is from a speech by Xi Jinping, emphasizing the centrality of ideals and convictions to the Party’s survival and success. The spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists is rich in content, and upholding ideals and convictions is a very important part of it, the key to its ability to transcend time and space and radiate eternal brilliance. Throughout our Party’s journey, it has experienced countless hardships and trials, but no difficulty has been able to crush us, precisely because of the unswerving convictions of millions of Party members and their absolute loyalty to the Party. Ideals and convictions have always been a powerful spiritual pillar for our Party’s pioneering and enterprising efforts, and a beacon for the career and life of every Party member. On the new journey, facing complex and volatile international and domestic situations and various uncertain and unpredictable risks and challenges, it is all the more necessary to consolidate the foundation of ideals and convictions and strengthen the confidence and resolve to overcome risks and challenges. We must arm our minds with the Party’s new theories for the New Era, and build ideals and convictions on the foundation of the scientific truth of Marxism. We must comprehensively study and grasp Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully and systematically master its basic viewpoints and scientific system, understand its worldview and methodology, and adhere to and apply the positions, viewpoints, and methods that run through it. We must deeply comprehend the series of requirements in this important thought regarding firming up ideals and convictions, raising the realm of thought, and strengthening Party spirit, and firm up our faith in Marxism, our belief in socialism with Chinese characteristics, and our confidence in realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We must adhere to the unchanging path and unwavering will, and firmly take the only correct path of Chinese-path modernization for building a strong country and achieving national rejuvenation.

保持坚如磐石的理想信念。习近平总书记指出：“我之所以不断强调坚定理想信念，是因为这是事关马克思主义政党、社会主义国家的精神力量和前途命运的根本问题。”中国共产党人精神谱系内涵丰富，坚守理想信念是其十分重要的内容，是其能够跨越时空、绽放恒久光芒的关键。我们党一路走来，经历了无数艰险和磨难，但没有任何困难能压垮我们，靠的就是千千万万党员坚贞不渝的信念、对党的绝对忠诚。理想信念始终是我们党开拓进取的强大精神支柱，是每一个党员事业和人生的灯塔。新征程上，面对错综复杂的国际国内形势、各种不确定难预料的风险挑战，更加需要夯实理想信念之基，增强战胜风险挑战的底气和信心。要用新时代党的创新理论武装头脑，把理想信念建立在马克思主义科学真理基础上。全面学习领会习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想，全面系统掌握其基本观点、科学体系，把握好其世界观和方法论，坚持好、运用好贯穿其中的立场观点方法。深刻领会这一重要思想关于坚定理想信念、提升思想境界、加强党性锻炼等一系列要求，坚定对马克思主义的信仰、对中国特色社会主义的信念、对实现中华民族伟大复兴的信心。坚持道不变、志不改，坚定走好中国式现代化这条强国建设、民族复兴的唯一正确道路。

Cultivate the most sincere and genuine feelings for the people. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “The people are the greatest source of confidence for our Party’s governance, the solid foundation of our republic, and the fundamental basis for strengthening our Party and rejuvenating our country.” [3]3 This quote underscores the people as the foundation of the Party’s legitimacy and strength. From the great founding spirit of the Party’s commitment to living up to the people, to the Yan’an Spirit’s wholehearted service to the people; from the Jiao Yulu Spirit’s closeness to and love for the people and selfless dedication, to the Lei Feng Spirit’s service to the people and delight in helping others; from the spirit of the fight against poverty’s unity of purpose from top to bottom, to the great spirit of fighting COVID-19’s putting life above all else, the series of great spirits forged by Chinese Communists distinctly manifest the most sincere and genuine feelings for the people. Chinese-path modernization is the modernization of a huge population, and the modernization of common prosperity for all the people. Only by always trusting the people, firmly relying on the people, and fully mobilizing the initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm of the broad masses can we gather the mighty force to advance Chinese-path modernization. We must always adhere to the people-centered development philosophy, safeguard the fundamental interests of the people, improve people’s wellbeing, and ensure that the fruits of modernization benefit all the people more and more fairly. We must practice the mass line of the Party in the New Era, vigorously promote the practice of investigation and research, achieve the diagnosis of problems and the dissection of typical cases, and come up with practical measures and methods to solve problems. Starting from the most difficult groups and the most prominent issues, we must promptly respond to the demands and expectations of the people, adopt more measures to benefit people’s livelihoods and warm their hearts, and exchange our “toil index” for the people’s “happiness index.”

厚植至真至诚的人民情怀。习近平总书记指出：“人民是我们党执政的最大底气，是我们共和国的坚实根基，是我们强党兴国的根本所在。”从伟大建党精神的不负人民，到延安精神的全心全意为人民服务；从焦裕禄精神的亲民爱民、无私奉献，到雷锋精神的服务人民、助人为乐；从脱贫攻坚精神的上下同心，到伟大抗疫精神的生命至上，中国共产党人铸就的一系列伟大精神，鲜明彰显至真至诚的人民情怀。中国式现代化是人口规模巨大的现代化，是全体人民共同富裕的现代化。只有始终相信人民，紧紧依靠人民，充分调动广大人民的积极性、主动性、创造性，才能凝聚起推进中国式现代化的磅礴力量。要始终坚持以人民为中心的发展思想，维护人民根本利益，增进民生福祉，让现代化成果更多更公平惠及全体人民。践行新时代党的群众路线，大兴调查研究之风，做到把脉问诊、解剖麻雀，拿出切实解决问题的办法和措施。从最困难的群体和最突出的问题抓起，及时回应人民群众诉求和期盼，采取更多惠民生、暖民心举措，用“辛苦指数”换来群众的“幸福指数”。

Hone the spirit of struggle to advance courageously. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “Over the past century, in responding to various difficulties and challenges, our Party has tempered its backbone and character of fearing no formidable enemy, fearing no risk, daring to struggle, and daring to win.” [4]4 This quote highlights the Party’s historical cultivation of a fighting spirit through adversity. Throughout its journey, the Communist Party of China has encountered the test of blood and fire, experienced countless ordeals of life and death, and relied on a spirit of revolution plus hard work to endure hardships and thrive unceasingly. The spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists was forged by generations of Communists through overcoming difficulties and tenaciously striving. Daring to take responsibility and daring to struggle demonstrate the spiritual demeanor and willpower of Chinese Communists, who cannot be crushed by difficulties or broken by hardships. Chinese-path modernization is a great and arduous undertaking. Only by actively taking on responsibilities and daring and being adept at struggle can we victoriously advance this historic cause. We must consciously think about and plan our work within the overall context of the Party and the state’s development, find our own position, and carry out work creatively with the spirit of daring to be the first, the courage for self-reform, the thinking of enterprising innovation, and the spirit of vigorous endeavor, fulfilling our duties and responsibilities well for the Party and the people. We must strengthen our awareness of potential dangers, adhere to bottom-line thinking, firm up our will to struggle, and enhance our ability to struggle. We must be highly vigilant against “black swan” events, while also preventing and defusing “gray rhino” events, [5]5 “Black swan” events are rare, unpredictable occurrences with severe consequences; “gray rhino” events are highly obvious but neglected threats. These terms are used in Chinese political discourse to describe risk categories. actively recognize, respond to, and seek change, and rely on tenacious struggle to open up new horizons for the development of our cause.

磨砺勇往直前的斗争精神。习近平总书记指出：“一百年来，在应对各种困难挑战中，我们党锤炼了不畏强敌、不惧风险、敢于斗争、勇于胜利的风骨和品质。”一路走来，中国共产党遭遇了血与火的考验，经历了无数生与死的洗礼，凭着一股革命加拼命的精神，方能饱经磨难而生生不息。中国共产党人精神谱系是一代代共产党人在攻坚克难、顽强拼搏中铸就的。敢于担当、勇于斗争，展现了中国共产党人困难压不倒、苦难击不穿的精神风范和意志品格。中国式现代化是一项伟大而艰巨的事业，唯有积极担当作为，敢于善于斗争，才能胜利推进这一历史伟业。要自觉在党和国家事业发展大局中思考谋划工作、找准自身定位，以敢为人先的锐气、自我革新的勇气、进取创新的思维、奋发有为的精神创造性开展工作，为党和人民履好职、尽好责。增强忧患意识，坚持底线思维，坚定斗争意志，增强斗争本领，既高度警惕“黑天鹅”事件，也防范化解“灰犀牛”事件，主动识变应变求变，依靠顽强斗争打开事业发展新天地。

Forever maintain the distinctive character of self-revolution. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “Courage in self-revolution is the most distinctive character of our Party and also its greatest strength.” [6]6 This quote defines self-revolution as the Party’s core mechanism for maintaining its integrity and vitality. For over a hundred years, externally, the Party has relied on developing people’s democracy and accepting the supervision of the people; internally, it has relied on comprehensive and strict governance of the Party and advancing self-revolution. It has had the courage to uphold truth and correct errors, and the courage to turn its blade inward and scrape the poison from the bone, ensuring that the Party remains prosperous and grows stronger over the long term. The spirit of self-revolution runs through the spiritual lineage of Chinese Communists, and is a powerful spiritual support for our Party to avoid degeneration, discoloration, and loss of flavor, and to forever maintain its vitality. On the new journey, we must use the spirit of self-revolution to strengthen our work style and build up our Party’s physique, continuously enhancing the Party’s capacity for self-purification, self-improvement, self-reform, and self-enhancement. We must highlight a problem-oriented approach, regularly conduct self-examination and self-correction, clean away political dust, and correct behavioral deviations. We must draw nourishment from the Party’s extraordinary history, undergo tempering in strict inner-Party political life, continuously elevate our realm of thought, use the spirit of self-revolution to inspire a state of mind that never slackens, and continuously strengthen the drive for concrete action and hard work.

永葆自我革命的鲜明品格。习近平总书记指出：“勇于自我革命，是我们党最鲜明的品格，也是我们党最大的优势。”一百多年来，党外靠发展人民民主、接受人民监督，内靠全面从严治党、推进自我革命，勇于坚持真理、修正错误，勇于刀刃向内、刮骨疗毒，保证了党长盛不衰、不断发展壮大。自我革命精神贯穿于中国共产党人的精神谱系，是我们党不变质、不变色、不变味，永葆生机活力的强大精神支撑。新征程上，要以自我革命精神强作风、壮肌体，不断增强党的自我净化、自我完善、自我革新、自我提高的能力。突出问题导向，经常对照检查，打扫政治灰尘，纠正行为偏差。从党的非凡历史中汲取滋养，在严格的党内政治生活中经受淬炼，不断提升思想境界，以自我革命精神激励永不懈怠的精神状态，不断增强真抓实干、埋头苦干的动力。
