The reason why the Communist Party of China is capable and why socialism with Chinese characteristics works is, in the final analysis, because Marxism works. Recently, General Secretary Xi Jinping issued important instructions on the project of studying and developing Marxist theory in the New Era, stating that “the project of studying and developing Marxist theory is a foundational and strategic project for the Party’s ideological and theoretical building,” that “we must uphold fundamental principles and break new ground, focus on studying, propagating, and implementing the Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and strive to deepen systematic and theoretical research and interpretation,” and that “we must make greater contributions to adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.” Marxism is the fundamental guiding ideology for building the Party and the country, and for rejuvenating the Party and the country; it is the soul and banner of our Party. The 20-year development of the project of studying and developing Marxist theory, along with the large number of high-quality research results it has produced, constitutes a solid theoretical foundation for us to exercise historical initiative and steadfastly create the future. We must fully, accurately, and comprehensively grasp the new requirements for promoting the study and development of Marxist theory on the new journey of the New Era, deeply comprehend and implement the guiding ideology, content support, and strength foundation of the project’s implementation in the New Era, further consolidate the guiding position of Marxism in the ideological domain, and open up new horizons for the study and development of Marxist theory.

Persisting in integration with the best of traditional Chinese culture means strengthening historical confidence and cultural confidence, adhering to making the past serve the present and weeding through the old to bring forth the new, linking the essence of Marxist thought with the cream of fine traditional Chinese culture, and integrating it with the common values that the people use daily without conscious awareness, thereby continuously endowing scientific theory with distinct Chinese characteristics and continuously consolidating the historical and mass foundations for theoretical innovation. Constructing an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences is the historical mission entrusted to Marxist theoretical workers by the Party and the people. The *Decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Further Deepening Reform Comprehensively to Advance Chinese-Path Modernization* [2]2 The *Decision* was adopted at the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC in July 2024, outlining major reforms to advance Chinese-path modernization., adopted at the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC, states: “Innovate the project on Marxist theoretical research and development, implement an innovation project for philosophy and social sciences, and construct an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences.” The questions of China, the world, the people, and the era express the historical context and basic orientation for constructing China’s independent knowledge system. Based on the new journey of comprehensively deepening reform and advancing Chinese-path modernization, constructing an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences is of greater significance and richer connotation. Adhering to the guidance of Marxism is the fundamental hallmark that distinguishes contemporary Chinese philosophy and social sciences from other philosophy and social sciences. Persistently using the Marxist stance, viewpoint, and method to observe and interpret the vivid practice of Chinese social change and economic development, promptly summarizing the fresh experience created in the vivid practice of comprehensively deepening reform, and using practice to nurture theoretical innovation while using theoretical innovation to promote practical development—this is the most basic theoretical support and practical basis for the innovative development of Marxism. Advancing Chinese-path modernization is a great practice unprecedented in history, providing vast space and abundant energy for theoretical creation and academic prosperity. Only by not forgetting the past can we open up the future; only by being good at inheritance can we better innovate. Facing new situations, new tasks, and new requirements, Marxist theoretical research must continuously strengthen the theoretical and systematic construction of China’s independent knowledge system. The reason Marxism has vigorous vitality and remains the most influential great thought in the contemporary world is that it reveals the basic laws of the development of human society and points the direction for human society to move towards a better future. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasizes: “Continue to combine the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture, so that Marxism presents more Chinese characteristics, Chinese style, and Chinese manner, and write a new chapter in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.” [3]3 This quote is from Xi Jinping’s speech at the symposium on the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China on July 1, 2021, emphasizing the “Two Integrations” of Marxism with Chinese reality and traditional culture. Based on the past and facing the future, embracing China while looking at the world, Marxist theoretical research and development must make efforts in systematically refining and summarizing iconic concepts and original theories. Continuously strengthen the construction of the disciplinary system and textbook system for philosophy and social sciences guided by Marxism, persistently deepen the normalized research on major theoretical and practical issues facing China’s development and the Party’s governance, and gather important landmark achievements that possess both ideological and theoretical depth and decision-making reference value. It is necessary to combine the continuous deepening of research on the basic tenets of Marxism, focus on the key research and interpretation of the principled theoretical achievements among the new concepts and new judgments proposed by the Party, deeply answer China’s specific practical problems, deeply excavate the rich connotation and contemporary value of the best of traditional Chinese culture, and continuously stimulate the vitality of theoretical creation.
