The fate of youth has always been closely linked to the times. The outbreak of the May Fourth Movement brought about a great awakening of people’s pursuit of truth and progress, promoted the spread of Marxism in China, opened the prelude to the New Democratic Revolution, demonstrated that Chinese youth became the vanguard force driving social change in China, and brought the Chinese revolution into a brand-new period. The power of youth, the surge of youth, and the creativity of youth have always been the mighty force driving the Chinese nation forward courageously. A history of national rejuvenation is also a history of youth struggle. From the New Democratic Revolution period’s struggle for national independence and people’s liberation, to “dedicating youth to the motherland” after the founding of New China, from the “unite and revitalize China” of the reform and opening up period to the “rest assured, Party; a strong nation depends on me” of the New Era, the broad masses of young people have always been of one heart with the Party and followed the Party in struggle, scattering their youth on the journey of national rejuvenation, composing stirring and magnificent youth movements. History and practice have fully proven that Chinese youth have lofty ideals and aspirations, profound family and national feelings, and great creativity, and have always been the vanguard force for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

When the youth thrive, the nation thrives; when the youth are strong, the nation is strong. When a generation of youth has ideals, ability, and a sense of responsibility, the country has a future and the nation has hope. Since the May Fourth Movement, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and inspired by the May Fourth spirit of patriotism, progress, democracy, and science, generation after generation of Chinese youth have continued to struggle, using their youthful selves to create a youthful China and a youthful nation, composing stirring youth movements in the process of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Looking back at the May Fourth Movement, what we see is not only a weighty history but also a spiritual driving force inspiring us to march toward Chinese-path modernization. Commemorating the May Fourth Movement, inheriting and carrying forward its spirit, is not only about remembering history and honoring our predecessors, but also about fearing no difficulties and forging ahead, contributing youthful strength in advancing the great cause of building a strong country and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

With the passion of youth, the broad masses of young people have sounded the strong voice of the times, “Pure love, only for China,” and with the actions of youth, they have fulfilled the solemn oath, “Rest assured, Party; a strong nation depends on me.” On the eve of May Fourth, the results of the 28th “China Youth May Fourth Medal” selection were announced. Among the winners, some are dedicated to scientific research, striving for excellence, displaying youthful vigor in promoting high-level technological self-reliance and self-strengthening; some have crossed oceans, opened roads and built bridges, demonstrating youthful responsibility in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative; some have gone deep into grassroots, assisted agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, unlocking the youthful code of rural revitalization; some have taken root in deserts, embracing the countryside, playing the youthful movement of lucid waters and lush mountains being invaluable assets; some have devoted themselves to education, fostering virtue and nurturing people, crossing mountains and seas to guard youthful dreams; and some have explored the origins of Chinese civilization, continuing cultural roots, composing a youthful chapter of cultural confidence.

Facing the difficulties, obstacles, and even stormy waves that may be encountered on the road ahead, responding to major challenges, resisting major risks, overcoming major resistance, and resolving major contradictions, the mission entrusted by the times is incomparably glorious and the responsibility is arduous and heavy. This requires young people in the New Era to display the youthful quality of being pioneers. The vast majority of young people must face difficulties head-on, step forward, and shoulder their responsibilities. On the magnificent journey of advancing Chinese-path modernization, the vast majority of young people are born at the right time and bear heavy responsibilities. The stage for displaying their talents is incomparably broad, and the prospects for realizing their dreams are incomparably bright. Young people in the New Era must seize opportunities, focus on the main battlefield, and anchor themselves on the new track, achieving outstanding results that live up to their youth, the times, and the people in this century-spanning youthful long-distance race.

They must bravely act as pacesetters and the fresh force in all fields and aspects, including scientific and technological innovation, rural revitalization, green development, social services, and defending the borders. Laborers are the most active factor in the productive forces. What matches the new quality productive forces is no longer ordinary laborers who mainly engage in simple repetitive labor, but rather scientific and technological talents capable of creating new quality productive forces and applied talents who can proficiently master new quality means of production. Youth are the main force in forming and developing new quality productive forces and should naturally be at the forefront of innovation and creation. Rural revitalization is a stage that calls for youth and at the same time cultivates youth, that calls for talent and at the same time cultivates talent. Rural revitalization is an important task in building a strong agricultural country, and young talent is the backbone of rural revitalization. Young people in the New Era must bravely shoulder the era’s responsibility for rural revitalization, letting their youth shine brightly on the stage of rural revitalization. Young people in the New Era must establish a consciousness of the community of life between humans and nature, become advocates of the new development philosophy, practitioners of a green lifestyle, and explorers of green development. Young people in the New Era must actively engage in social services, be enthusiastic about volunteer service and public welfare activities, and assist in grassroots social governance work. “With the ambition of a young man holding a long tassel, military uniform bears the sentiment of home and country.” Young people in the New Era must cherish the “great affairs of the state”[3]3 “Great affairs of the state” (国之大者) is a phrase used by Xi Jinping to refer to the fundamental, long-term interests and strategic priorities of the Party and the country., actively join the military, dedicate themselves to national defense, and write the era’s chapter of protecting the country with their youth and blood.

要在科技创新、乡村振兴、绿色发展、社会服务、卫国戍边等各领域各方面勇当排头兵和生力军。劳动者是生产力中最活跃的因素，与新质生产力匹配的不再是以简单重复劳动为主的普通劳动者，而是需要能够创造新质生产力的科技人才和能够熟练掌握新质生产资料的应用型人才。青年是形成和发展新质生产力的主力军，理应走在创新创造前列。乡村振兴是一个呼唤青年同时造就青年、呼唤人才同时造就人才的舞台。乡村振兴是建设农业强国的重要任务，青年人才是乡村振兴的中坚力量。新时代青年要勇于担负起乡村振兴的时代责任，让青春在乡村振兴的舞台上熠熠生辉。新时代青年要树立人与自然生命共同体意识，做新发展理念的倡导者，做绿色生活方式的践行者，做绿色发展的探索者。新时代青年要积极投身社会服务，热心于志愿服务和公益活动，助力基层社会治理工作。“手持长缨少年志，戎装不负家国情”，新时代青年要胸怀“国之大者”，积极投身军旅、献身国防，用青春和热血书写保家卫国的时代篇章。

Without ideals and faith, one will suffer from spiritual ‘calcium deficiency’.”[4]4 “Spiritual ‘calcium deficiency’” is a metaphor used by Xi Jinping to describe a Young people in the New Era must carry forward the May Fourth Spirit[5], hold high the torch of ideals, keep their feet on the ground, aim high, closely integrate personal ideals with the destiny of the country, and make unremitting efforts to realize the great cause of building a strong country and rejuvenating the nation. Chinese youth in the New Era must cherish this era, shoulder the mission of the times, temper themselves through responsibility, and grow through fulfilling their duties. Advancing Chinese-path modernization is an unprecedented pioneering undertaking, which will inevitably encounter various risks, challenges, difficulties, obstacles, and even stormy waves. The vast majority of young people must never be bystanders of the times; they must shoulder the mission of the times, bravely take on heavy burdens, overcome difficulties, and engage in practice, maintaining the vigor and courage of a newborn calf that is not afraid of tigers and the more difficult the situation, the more forward they press. They must temper themselves through responsibility and grow through practice. In youth, choosing hardship means choosing gain; choosing dedication means choosing nobility. Contemporary youth must inherit and carry forward the spirit of enduring hardship, hard work, self-reliance, and arduous struggle, abandon the “arrogance and pamperedness”[6], and gain growth in the process of “seeking hardship for oneself”[7]. Experiencing more setbacks, failures, and tests in youth is conducive to walking the road of life well. Struggle is not just a loud slogan; it is manifested in doing every small thing well, completing every task, and fulfilling every duty. The road of struggle will not be smooth sailing; it is often full of thorns and bumps. The strong always rise from setbacks and never lose heart. Only a youth of passionate struggle, only a youth of tenacious拼搏, only a youth dedicated to the people, will leave behind fulfilling, warm, lasting, and regretless youthful memories. Young people cherish lofty aspirations, and the time for striving is now. The road of life is broadened by struggle. Chinese youth in the New Era must make struggle the brightest底色 of youth, take the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as their own mission, integrate their youth and dreams into the cause of the country and the nation, and struggle passionately on the track of realizing national rejuvenation. At the opening ceremony of the spring 2024 semester training class for young and middle-aged cadres at the Central Party School (National Academy of Governance), General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward the “Five Consciousnesses”[8] requirements for young cadres, namely, “consciously being a firm believer and practitioner of the Party’s innovative theories, consciously being a model practitioner of loyalty and honesty to the Party, consciously being a selfless contributor dedicated to benefiting the people, consciously being an unremitting striver who dares to take responsibility and act, and consciously being a powerful promoter of a good political ecosystem.” Young cadres are the “key minority” within the youth group; they must strive to practice the requirements of the “Five Consciousnesses” and play a leading and exemplary role.

要争做有理想、敢担当、能吃苦、肯奋斗的新时代好青年。习近平总书记强调，“历史和现实都告诉我们，青年一代有理想、有担当，国家就有前途，民族就有希望，实现我们的发展目标就有源源不断的强大力量”“理想指引人生方向，信念决定事业成败。没有理想信念，就会导致精神上‘缺钙’”。新时代青年要发扬五四精神，高擎理想的火炬，脚踏实地，志存高远，将个人理想与国家命运紧密结合在一起，为实现强国建设、民族复兴伟业不懈奋斗。新时代中国青年要珍惜这个时代、担负时代使命，在担当中历练，在尽责中成长。推进中国式现代化，是一项前无古人的开创性事业，必然会遇到各种风险挑战、艰难险阻甚至惊涛骇浪。广大青年绝不做时代的旁观者，要肩负起时代的使命，勇挑重担、勇克难关、勇于实践，保持初生牛犊不怕虎、越是艰险越向前的刚健勇毅，在担当中历练，在实践中成长。青年时代，选择吃苦也就选择了收获，选择奉献也就选择了高尚。当代青年要继承和发扬吃苦耐劳、自力更生、艰苦奋斗的精神，摒弃“骄娇”二气，在“自找苦吃”的过程中收获成长。青年时期多经历一点摔打、挫折、考验，有利于走好一生的路。奋斗不止是响亮的口号，而是要在做好每一件小事、完成每一项任务、履行每一项职责中见精神。奋斗的道路不会一帆风顺，往往荆棘丛生、充满坎坷。强者，总是从挫折中不断奋起、永不气馁。只有进行了激情奋斗的青春，只有进行了顽强拼搏的青春，只有为人民作出了奉献的青春，才会留下充实、温暖、持久、无悔的青春回忆。青年怀壮志，奋进正当时。人生之路，因奋斗而宽广。新时代中国青年要把奋斗作为青春最亮丽的底色，以实现中华民族伟大复兴为己任，把青春和梦想融入国家和民族事业中，在实现民族复兴的赛道上激情奋斗。习近平总书记在2024年春季学期中央党校（国家行政学院）中青年干部培训班开班时对年轻干部提出“五个自觉”的要求，即“自觉做党的创新理论的笃信笃行者、自觉做对党忠诚老实的模范践行者、自觉做矢志为民造福的无私奉献者、自觉做勇于担当作为的不懈奋斗者、自觉做良好政治生态的有力促进者”。年轻干部是青年群体中的“关键少数”，要努力践行“五个自觉”的要求，发挥好率先垂范作用。

They must display youthful achievements, showcase youthful style, and contribute youthful strength. Young people in the New Era must unswervingly listen to the Party and follow the Party, firmly establish confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and contribute youthful wisdom and strength to advancing Chinese-path modernization. Young people in the New Era must unite as one, consciously integrate the youthful struggle of the “small self” into the torrent of the times of the “big self”, and together with the people,凝聚 the strength of China. Young people in the New Era must ride the tide on the new journey, face difficulties head-on. Young people in the New Era must cultivate innovative abilities and hone excellent skills in fiery practice. Young people in the New Era must temper their will and character and accumulate spiritual strength in arduous struggle. Let the flower of youth bloom in the places where the motherland needs it most, and write a uniquely splendid life in the great practice of building a strong country and rejuvenating the nation. Chinese youth in the New Era are in the best period of the Chinese nation’s development, facing both rare life opportunities to make achievements and the era’s mission of “Heaven is about to place a great responsibility on this person”[9]. Realizing the grand goal of building a strong country and rejuvenating the nation requires the entire Party, the entire country, and people of all ethnic groups, including the vast majority of young people, to unite as one, go all out, continue to climb slopes and cross hurdles, and tackle difficulties. The closer we get to the goal of national rejuvenation, the more we must not slack off, the more we must redouble our efforts, and the more we must mobilize the vast majority of young people to struggle. On the new journey of advancing Chinese-path modernization, young people in the New Era are born at the right time and bear heavy responsibilities. The stage for displaying their talents is incomparably broad, and the prospects for realizing their dreams are incomparably bright. Young people in the New Era must remember General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instructions, practice the May Fourth Spirit of “patriotism, progress, democracy, and science” with concrete actions, and strive to write a youth chapter of shouldering responsibility for Chinese-path modernization.

要展现青春作为、彰显青春风采、贡献青春力量。新时代青年要坚定不移听党话、跟党走，坚定中国特色社会主义道路自信、理论自信、制度自信、文化自信，为推进中国式现代化贡献青春智慧和力量；新时代青年要团结一心，自觉把“小我”的青春奋斗融入“大我”的时代洪流之中，同人民群众一道凝聚起中国力量；新时代青年要在新征程上勇立潮头，迎难而上；新时代青年要在火热的实践中，培养创新能力、练就过硬本领；新时代青年要在艰苦奋斗中，锤炼意志品质、积蓄精神力量。让青春之花绽放在祖国最需要的地方，在强国建设、民族复兴的伟大实践中书写别样精彩的人生。新时代中国青年正处在中华民族发展的最好时期，既面临着难得的建功立业的人生际遇，也面临着“天将降大任于斯人”的时代使命。实现强国建设、民族复兴伟业宏伟目标，需要全党全国各族人民包括广大青年团结一致、全力以赴，继续爬坡过坎、攻坚克难。越是接近民族复兴的目标，越不能懈怠，越要加倍努力，越要动员广大青年为之奋斗。在推进中国式现代化的新征程上，新时代青年生逢其时、重任在肩，施展才干的天地无比广阔，实现梦想的前景无比光明。新时代青年要牢记习近平总书记嘱托，以实际行动践行“爱国、进步、民主、科学”的五四精神，奋力书写为中国式现代化挺膺担当的青春篇章。
