Philosophers Are Not Bystanders of Society

Philosophy is not a reverie outside the world. True philosophy and philosophers are products of their era. Chen Xianda truly inherited the practical character and critical spirit of Marxist philosophy, advocating that "philosophers are not bystanders of society." Chen Xianda's academic thought highly valued and profoundly embodied the practicality and reality of philosophical research and interpretation, making him an outstanding exemplar of grasping the era through the mode of philosophy.

Philosophy must reflect the demands of the development of the times and social progress. The article "Practical Verification and Logical Proof," published in *Teaching and Research* Issue 4, 1963, was a paper Chen Xianda revised from a lecture manuscript on dialectical logic he taught at Peking University. The article explained from multiple aspects the relationship between practical verification and logical proof, illustrating the important role of logical proof in the cognition of truth. Chen Xianda recalled: At the time, this article was merely a pure academic piece with little influence. "Many years later, rereading this article, I deeply felt that any theoretical critique or philosophical critique only possesses practical significance and exerts a major effect on reality when it represents the demands of social progress... For Marxist philosophy, any practice of indulging in abstract speculation and being trapped within the besieged city of pure concepts, unable to break out, runs counter to the very nature of Marxism. Such a person can become a scholar, but will not become a Marxist theorist."

Marxist philosophy must promptly absorb new achievements in scientific development. As early as the 1980s, Chen Xianda pointed out: "It goes without saying that the reputation of Marxist philosophy among some youth in socialist countries has already exposed the fact that it has failed to keep pace with the steps of world historical development and scientific progress today. This is what people are accustomed to calling a 'new test' or a 'new challenge'... Marxist philosophy... must rapidly provide scientific answers to the new questions raised by the natural and social sciences. This is an arduous task."

Emphasizing practice and focusing on real-world issues are the most prominent characteristics of Marxist philosophy. "Philosophy must absolutely not become a useless art of dragon-slaying [1]1 “High monk in the desert” (沙漠里的高僧): A metaphor for a philosopher who isolates himself from society and practical life, engaging only in abstract, esoteric speculation.; rather, it should be the art of dismembering an ox as practiced by Cook Ding [2]2 “Gathas” (偈语): A Buddhist term for a verse or stanza, often a short, cryptic saying conveying a spiritual insight; used here to criticize empty, mystical philosophizing.. Enter the Way through technique, and transform the Way into technique. If philosophy merely involves picking apart concepts, engaging in groundless empty talk, and debating utterly meaningless things, even if it is lively, it is actually fooling outsiders and is useless." "A cook who cannot dismember an ox but only possesses a cleaver in name; a locksmith who holds a key but cannot open a lock—both are unworthy of their titles. The same applies to philosophers. Do not be a philosopher in name only; you must be adept at opening locks, that is, facing reality, analyzing problems, and truly playing the role of philosophy as a telescope and microscope, capable of both seeing far and wide and detecting things before they sprout." In Chen Xianda's view, Marx and Engels called their philosophy "new materialism" precisely because it was "new" in its emphasis on practice, avoiding abstract speculation. Chen Xianda unified knowledge and action, actively practicing this philosophical concept throughout his life.

Exploration Marching into the Depths of History

Chen Xianda was one of the main pioneers in China's academic circles to earliest conduct research on the history of Marxist philosophy. His methodology and related intellectual achievements in the study of the intellectual history of Marx and Engels attracted considerable attention in the academic world. Before the 1980s, research on Marxist philosophy in China was mainly confined to the introduction of classic works and the explanation of basic principles, lacking systematic research on the intellectual history of Marxist philosophy, especially research on Marx's early thought. In the mid-1980s, the work *The Intellectual History of Marx and Engels*, with Chen Xianda as the lead author, was published, becoming the first monumental work in China to systematically study the intellectual history of Marxism. The co-authored book *Research on Marx's Early Thought* by Chen Xianda and Jin Huiming became the pioneering work in China on the study of Marx's early thought. In particular, *Marching into the Depths of History*, which Chen Xianda called his "first personal monograph," is widely recognized as a classic work organically combining the history and theory of historical materialism in China and is listed as a required professional reading book for graduate students at many universities.

Chen Xianda put forward many unique insights on the methodology of studying the history of Marxist philosophy. First, Chen Xianda particularly emphasized the importance of the intrinsic connection between history and logic. In his view, two tendencies easily arise in the study of the history of Marxist philosophy: one tendency is to focus only on studying the life and revolutionary activities of the classic writers and the objective historical conditions for the formation and development of Marxist philosophy, while neglecting to study the evolution of their thought from the perspective of their original works; the other tendency is to focus solely on the study of original works, adopting a method of arranging classic works chronologically into a book. Both tendencies are unacceptable. "The intellectual history of Marx and Engels' philosophy is based on their classic works, but as a science of intellectual history, it should grasp the intrinsic logical connections of intellectual development from in-depth study of the original works, clarifying the driving forces, laws, and mechanisms of intellectual development." "The two main lines of history and logic are equally important and cannot be neglected." If they are separated from each other, both sides will become dead or ossified things. "History is the premise for understanding logic; likewise, only by accurately grasping logic can one understand history more profoundly."

Historical research is closely connected with reality. “All historical research can find its motivation in the needs of reality. Marxist philosophy is a science that is playing a role in reality, so the study of the history of Marx and Engels’ philosophy should be closely integrated with reality, paying attention to various urgent social issues raised in reality, and conducting scientific research with a clear aim. The method of studying history purely for the sake of history is not advisable, and it is also unworkable in reality. However, this does not mean that one can arbitrarily and subjectively fabricate history. Historical research, like all scientific research, must respect objective facts. Yet, all scientific research discovers its topics from the needs of reality, so the study of Marx and Engels’ philosophical thought also needs to proceed from reality.”

Under such requirements, studying the history of Marxist philosophy can avoid dogmatism. “By studying the formation and development of Marx and Engels’ thought, we will grasp the vivid historical picture of the development of Marxist philosophy. In this historical picture, the ins and outs of every important proposition and basic category are very clearly presented. Thus, its basic concepts will not be regarded as rigid and immutable. It was, and should be in the future, a timely study of new situations, constantly developing through summarizing and generalizing new achievements in the natural and social sciences. Once this kind of historical understanding is formed, dogmatism loses its foothold.”

Second, Chen Xianda emphasizes the holistic study of the history of Marxist thought, which is another important feature of his methodology in the study of intellectual history. “In the study of the history of Marxist philosophical thought, we must also establish a holistic concept.” *The History of Marx and Engels’ Thought* [1]1 “High monk in the desert” (沙漠里的高僧): A metaphor for a philosopher who isolates himself from society and practical life, engaging only in abstract, esoteric speculation., from the perspective of vertical history, treats Marxism as a whole for discussion, which was pioneering in Chinese academia at the time. Chen Xianda points out: “The history of Marx and Engels’ thought is the history of the emergence, development, and maturation of the basic principles of Marxism, and also the history of the mutual promotion and mutual demonstration of the three component parts of Marxism.” The history of Marx and Engels’ thought presents the scientific system of Marxism. Marxism is not a compilation of some ready-made principles and conclusions, but an organic and unified whole. Not only are the three component parts unified, but the proposal of each principle is also combined with the historical conditions of the time and continuously enriched with the development of practice. “In the history of Marx and Engels’ thought, we can not only learn the important conclusions of Marxism, but more importantly, learn the methods of how they reached these conclusions and developed them. In this way, we can gradually master the standpoints, viewpoints, and methods of Marxism, summarize new experiences, solve new problems, adhere to principles, and prevent ideological rigidity.”

*A Study of Marx’s Early Thought* [2]2 “Gathas” (偈语): A Buddhist term for a verse or stanza, often a short, cryptic saying conveying a spiritual insight; used here to criticize empty, mystical philosophizing. filled a blank area in the Chinese philosophical community’s study of Marx’s early thought. Through the study of the history of the development of Marx’s early thought, this book reproduces the real process of the formation of Marxism; it elucidates the completeness of the Marxist theoretical system from the organic unity of logic and history, theory and practice, and the various components and basic principles of Marxism; it responds to some influential viewpoints raised in academia, especially analyzing some misinterpretations of Marx’s early thought, and refutes the erroneous view of using “young Marx” to negate mature Marxism. “An important characteristic of the formation of the materialist conception of history lies precisely in replacing Hegel and Feuerbach’s interpretation of historical phenomena with ‘alienation’ by a rigorous scientific conception of history, that is, a theory and doctrine about the structure and laws of development of human society. The issues of alienation and man can be studied, but only based on the principles of historical materialism can a scientific explanation be given to issues concerning man and alienation. Turning human history into a history of man’s ‘self-alienation’, explaining all social phenomena with man’s essence, and attempting to replace the Marxist materialist conception of history with a ‘humanistic conception of history’ is fundamentally untenable.”

*Towards the Depths of History* [3]3 “Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times and its popularization” (马克思主义中国化时代化大众化): A standard CPC formulation for the process of making Marxist theory relevant to Chinese conditions, contemporary realities, and accessible to ordinary people. is a masterpiece of Chen Xianda’s diligent exploration of Marx’s conception of history. The book takes humanity’s exploration of the laws of history as its prelude, focusing on studying how Marx broke through the limitations of previous conceptions of history and moved towards the depths of history, that is, the process of discovering the laws of history itself. It thereby profoundly reveals the epoch-making significance of Marx’s conception of history in the transformation of the human conception of history. In particular, it conducts a very valuable pioneering exploration of the important categories, theoretical value, internal contradictions, and the inevitability of leading to the materialist conception of history in the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844* [4]4 Ai Siqi (1910-1966) was a Chinese Marxist philosopher famous for his work *Popular Philosophy* (1936), which made Marxist philosophy accessible to a broad audience through simple language and everyday examples., which had a significant impact in the field of Marxist philosophy and the study of the history of philosophy. The important value of this book lies in deepening the understanding of the history of the formation of the materialist conception of history through the study of intellectual history and responding to the issues of the times. On the one hand, it not only delves into the history of the development of Marx’s thought to study the history of Marxist philosophy but also combines it with a broad history of Western thought and the history of human social development to conduct a profound study of the prehistory of Marx’s conception of history and his philosophical thought. On the other hand, by combining the study of the issues raised by the era of free capitalism and the needs of the proletariat’s liberation struggle, it expands and deepens the understanding of the history of the formation of the materialist conception of history. In short, by integrating the intellectual historical background, the conditions of the times, and the situation of the research subject in which the materialist conception of history emerged, it reveals how Marx moved from the surface of history, wrapped in layers of complex ideologies, motives, and contingencies, to the depths of history.

Third, Chen Xianda emphasizes perfecting the understanding of the issue of theoretical sources in the in-depth study of the prehistory of the materialist conception of history. In this regard, he has put forward many quite profound insights on the theoretical sources of the materialist conception of history. First, the sources of the materialist conception of history should be “things that Marx indeed critically absorbed, the basis for which is Marx’s own works, especially his reading notes,” “just as minerals buried underground do not constitute real wealth, theories that have not been studied cannot serve as the source of Marx’s historical theory.” Second, the direct and indirect sources of the materialist conception of history are multi-channel, including the critical inheritance of all outstanding cultural heritage of humanity; the comprehensive absorption of Western European social theories of the 19th century; and the inspiration from mutual influence in scientific exploration with contemporaries. Third, the sources of the materialist conception of history are not singular or purely philosophical, “just as inbreeding is not conducive to the development of a species, a creative philosophical theory will inevitably break through the limitation of going from philosophy to philosophy. The creation of the materialist conception of history extensively absorbed achievements from non-philosophical fields,” “the achievements of Marx’s predecessors in philosophy, economics, and political science formed a comprehensive force, a theoretical resultant force.” This is also a supplement and perfection to the holistic understanding of Marxism.

He believes that understanding the logical process of thought in the creation of historical materialism helps to understand Marx’s theory of alienated labor. “From the perspective of the logical process of thought in Marx’s creation of historical materialism, it underwent a process from alienation to alienated labor, and then from alienated labor to the comprehensive creation of historical materialism. This is consistent with the process by which Marx started from the superstructure, gradually delved into labor and the sphere of production, and discovered the ‘ultimate cause’ of history. This is a continuous, arduous process of theoretical exploration, containing contradictions and self-sublation.” [1]1 “High monk in the desert” (沙漠里的高僧): A metaphor for a philosopher who isolates himself from society and practical life, engaging only in abstract, esoteric speculation. A historical and concrete analysis of Marx’s process of thought helps us to understand relatively correctly major theoretical issues debated worldwide, such as alienation and humanism. The book *Toward the Depths of History* [2]2 “Gathas” (偈语): A Buddhist term for a verse or stanza, often a short, cryptic saying conveying a spiritual insight; used here to criticize empty, mystical philosophizing. fully demonstrates Chen Xianda’s profound understanding of the basic content and internal logic of Marx’s conception of history. This book overcomes the common methodological shortcoming of the separation of history and theory, that is, the disconnection between historical research and theoretical research. Chen Xianda emphasizes using theory to guide history and combining history with theory. He strives not only to grasp the theoretical structure of Marx’s conception of history in its crystallized form, but also to explore the logical thread of the evolution of Marx’s conception of history in its fluid form, and organically integrates the study of the history of thought with the study of specific theoretical topics, presenting a three-dimensional picture of the development of Marx’s thought.

He points out that historical research needs to be guided by historical materialism. Entering the 21st century, Chen Xianda, targeting problems in historical research, especially the trend of historical nihilism, profoundly elucidated the methodology of historical research based on historical materialism. He successively published works such as “The Historical Function of Historical Materialism: On Historical Facts, Historical Phenomena, and Historical Laws,” “History and the Writing of History,” and “Gleanings on History and Theory,” reaffirming that historical materialism contains not only a historical ontology concerning the essence of history and historical laws, but also a historical epistemology, historical methodology, and historical axiology. These two aspects are unified. It is necessary to clarify the relationship between historical facts and the writing of history, and between historical phenomena and historical laws; the writing of history cannot aim at deviating from historical facts. Denying the objectivity of history and its laws inevitably leads to historical nihilism. These works fully demonstrate Chen Xianda’s profound foundation in the study of the philosophy of history.

Promoting the Study of Chinese Marxist Philosophy Guided by Problems

Problems are the driving force for the development of thought or the creation of ideas. The epochal and national characteristics of philosophy are manifested through attention to theoretical and practical problems. Chen Xianda often uses “problems in philosophy” in correspondence to “philosophy in problems” to express philosophical attention to practical problems, and points out that these two types of problems are interrelated. Here we use “problem philosophy” to summarize Chen Xianda’s philosophical research and its paradigm, which emphasizes being guided by problems, especially practical problems.

Problems are the voice of the times. Adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times must pay attention to the problems of the era. In his article “Marx, the Giant of Human Thought,” published in *Guangming Daily*, Chen Xianda pointed out: “Being problem-oriented is the tradition of Marxist theoretical thought and is also an essential characteristic of Chinese Marxism. The adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context, in the final analysis, means basing oneself on China’s reality and taking solving China’s problems as the guide.” “The integration of the universal truth of Marxism with China’s concrete reality fundamentally means integrating with solving the fundamental problems China faced in different periods, thereby forming the corresponding Chinese path.”

Chen Xianda used Marxist philosophical viewpoints to promptly respond to and profoundly analyze some major theoretical and practical problems, generating broad and significant social impact. Among these, his analysis and response to cultural issues are particularly prominent.

Cultural issues became a hot topic in the 1990s. Chen Xianda was among the first to conduct fruitful in-depth explorations of the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture. In 1997, Chen Xianda published the article “The Contemporary Value of Traditional Chinese Culture” in *Social Sciences in China*, [3]3 “Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times and its popularization” (马克思主义中国化时代化大众化): A standard CPC formulation for the process of making Marxist theory relevant to Chinese conditions, contemporary realities, and accessible to ordinary people. conducting an in-depth analysis of the relationship between adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the modernization of traditional Chinese culture in the process of modernization. He pointed out, “The adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the modernization of traditional Chinese culture can be seen as two aspects of the same process. Marxism cannot be adapted to the Chinese context without integrating the excellent essence of traditional Chinese culture, while traditional Chinese culture, clinging to tradition and refusing to be researched and explored using Marxist standpoints, viewpoints, and methods, cannot be modernized. The modernization of traditional Chinese culture is by no means the elimination of tradition, but rather a rethinking of traditional culture from a contemporary standpoint using Marxist methods, extending, updating, and enriching tradition under new conditions.” Therefore, we value traditional Chinese culture, especially Confucian culture, for its value to China and even the world, critically inherit this precious human cultural heritage, and carry it forward. Accomplishing this historic task is a new contribution to world culture by the Chinese people, who are building socialism with Chinese characteristics. Chen Xianda analyzed and criticized views such as the theory of cultural conflict and cultural conservatism, arousing widespread attention and response in society.

Subsequently, Chen Xianda conducted long-term, continuous follow-up research on the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture, the results of which had a broad and profound impact in academic circles. On July 3, 2015, *Guangming Daily* published Chen Xianda’s nearly 10,000-word article “Marxism and Traditional Chinese Culture” as the lead story on its front page. The article pointed out that the current view in the ideological sphere that Marxism and traditional Chinese culture are mutually exclusive, like fire and ice that cannot coexist in the same furnace, is theoretically wrong and practically harmful. Chen Xianda explicitly stated that the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture should be examined from the height of the replacement of social formations. He used “old state, new mandate” [4]4 Ai Siqi (1910-1966) was a Chinese Marxist philosopher famous for his work *Popular Philosophy* (1936), which made Marxist philosophy accessible to a broad audience through simple language and everyday examples. as a key to clearing the fog and unraveling the debate on the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture. “Socialist China is the contemporary existence of an ancient China with a history of over five thousand years. China is an old state, an ancient country, but contemporary China is a new China under a socialist form different from traditional China.” “Only by examining it from the height of the transformation of social formations can we firmly establish what the guiding ideology of the Communist Party of China and socialist society is, and how to handle the major issue of the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture.” “When discussing the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture dominated by Confucianism, we must never forget this major historical and practical reality of the transformation of social formations, and must not forget the ‘old state, new mandate’.” “Only by inheriting the excellent traditional Chinese culture can Marxism achieve victory in China.” “For China to revolutionize, to transform, and to escape the desperate situation of national survival, it must take Marxism as its guiding ideology. But Marxism cannot replace traditional Chinese culture.” “The great power of Marxism lies in its integration with China’s reality, including its integration with Chinese history and traditional culture.” “To enable Marxism to have a fertile soil of thought and culture for its growth in China, to maintain the Chinese national characteristics of the Chinese people, and to give Chinese people a Chinese heart,” it is necessary “to cultivate the Chinese people with the excellent traditional culture and excellent morality of the Chinese nation.”

Chen Xianda believes that the creative transformation of traditional Chinese culture is the pivot for correctly handling the relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture. And the theoretical and methodological principle of creative transformation is to adhere to the guidance of Marxism's basic theories and methodology. "Do not abstractly debate the relationship between Marxist guidance and traditional Chinese culture, especially non-historically debate the superiority or inferiority, praise or blame of Marxism versus Confucianism. One is the theoretical guidance for thought in the Chinese revolution and socialist construction, the other is the spiritual lifeline of the Chinese nation and the cultural root of the Chinese nation." [1]1 “High monk in the desert” (沙漠里的高僧): A metaphor for a philosopher who isolates himself from society and practical life, engaging only in abstract, esoteric speculation. The relationship between Marxism and traditional Chinese culture should be handled using the viewpoint of historical materialism, and cultural nihilism should be opposed. Chinese Marxism can obtain intellectual resources, wisdom and inspiration from the essence of traditional Chinese culture, but one must also guard against the resurgence of conservative trends that, under the banner of exalting traditional culture, oppose Marxism and reject advanced Western culture. Chen Xianda has successively published important monographs such as *Marxism and Traditional Chinese Culture*, *Tradition and the Contemporary in Cultural Confidence*, and *Twelve Lectures on Marxism and Traditional Chinese Culture*, and has published dozens of important theoretical articles on this theme, providing us with an important method for correctly understanding the relationship between the Party's guiding ideology and the cultural root of the Chinese nation. In the academic field, he was among the first to propose the organic integration of Marxism with traditional Chinese culture, which is undoubtedly far-sighted.

Chen Xianda has profoundly expounded on the adherence to cultural confidence in the construction of a socialist culture. Regarding the issue of cultural confidence and how to treat traditional Chinese culture, he also published long articles in the *Guangming Daily* column, including "The Consciousness and Institutionalization of Cultural Heritage," "Politics and Academia in Cultural Confidence," "On the Foundation of Cultural Confidence," "The Essence and Contemporary Significance of Cultural Confidence," and "Consolidating the Theoretical and Practical Foundation of Cultural Confidence," which had a positive, broad and far-reaching impact on society. He elucidated where the foundation of cultural confidence comes from: "The foundation of contemporary Chinese cultural confidence comes not only from the richness of our profound and extensive traditional culture, its inclusiveness of harmony in diversity and its creative spirit, but also from the revolutionary nature of the red culture embodying the national spirit of ceaseless self-improvement, and the advanced nature and guiding orientation of socialist culture." [2]2 “Gathas” (偈语): A Buddhist term for a verse or stanza, often a short, cryptic saying conveying a spiritual insight; used here to criticize empty, mystical philosophizing. "Traditional Chinese culture is the root of cultural confidence; the Communist Party of China and Marxism are the mainstay of cultural confidence; the great achievements of socialism with Chinese characteristics are the foundation of cultural confidence; and correct cultural policy is the institutional guarantee for maintaining cultural confidence. Only by placing the foundation of cultural confidence within the overall environment of contemporary China, especially within the dialectical relationship among confidence in the path, confidence in the theory, confidence in the system, and cultural confidence, can we continue to strive with a new mental state in the new stage of development of socialism with Chinese characteristics, at the critical juncture of completing the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects." [3]3 “Adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times and its popularization” (马克思主义中国化时代化大众化): A standard CPC formulation for the process of making Marxist theory relevant to Chinese conditions, contemporary realities, and accessible to ordinary people. To adhere to cultural confidence, one must clarify "who is confident." "Cultural confidence is certainly not the self-confidence of culture itself. Culture is not the subject; the subject is people. In contemporary China, the subject of cultural confidence is the Communist Party of China and the Chinese nation." "The cultural confidence of the Communist Party of China is simultaneously the confidence of the Chinese nation and the confidence of the Chinese people. The subject of cultural confidence is the unity of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people, and the Chinese nation." Chen Xianda also pointed out "what to believe in" regarding cultural confidence. "If one asks what exactly cultural confidence believes in, the answer can be given with certainty: it believes in the Chinese spirit, Chinese wisdom, and Chinese concepts contained within excellent traditional Chinese culture; it believes in the revolutionary spirit and communist ideals and convictions within red culture; it believes in the advanced nature of socialist culture that elevates the nation, society, and individuals under the guidance of the core socialist values." He also put forward holistic reflections on how to strengthen cultural confidence. "Cultural construction is not equivalent to ideological construction, but ideological issues do exist within it. Cultural construction belongs to construction within the ideological sphere; it cannot be de-ideologized, de-politicized, or de-Sinicized. Cultural construction requires both consolidating the guiding position of Marxism in the ideological sphere, adhering to the guidance of Marxism and upholding the stance of Chinese culture, and also needs to be based on contemporary reality, combined with the conditions of the times, to create high-level cultural products that possess contemporary value and reflect the people's aspirations."

Cultural confidence is also reflected in the education of Marxist theory. Chen Xianda has long stood at the forefront of Marxist teaching and research, willingly acting as a "disseminator of the sacred fire of Marxism." He advocates that we should treat the teaching of Marxist courses as a socialist undertaking. The classroom may be small, but the responsibility is great. One of our major historical tasks is to use classroom teaching to arm and shape people with Marxist theory. Firmly believing in Marxism is of paramount importance for Marxist instructors. "For us, Marxist teaching is not only a profession but also a belief; it is the unity of belief and profession. What we teach is consistent with what we believe. If belief and profession are separated, and what we teach is something we ourselves do not believe, if what we say with our mouths differs from what we think in our hearts, not only will we fail to teach well, but it will also be a kind of pain, always feeling lacking in conviction and strength. Therefore, a good Marxist instructor must believe in Marxism and must combine the power of faith with the power of theory."

Chen Xianda is a banner for upholding and defending Marxist theory. Whenever various erroneous social trends opposing Marxism or distorting Marxism appear in society, he always fights at the forefront with the stance of a steadfast Marxist warrior. He does not consider himself a "bystander of society," but consistently insists on closely linking Marxist philosophy with socialist modernization, and uses his philosophical thinking to express concern for the fate of the nation, writing articles to criticize clearly and unequivocally: "Theory must be able to explain contemporary world problems and explain China's problems. If it cannot explain China's real problems, and one is dazzled by a profusion of choices, one often becomes lost and experiences the collapse of ideals."

A "Lovable and Endearing" Philosophy in Essays

Chen Xianda has made original explorations into the construction of the discourse system for the popularization of Marxist philosophy. Ai Siqi's *Popular Philosophy*, published in 1936, was iconic for the popularization and mass dissemination of Marxist philosophy. [4]4 Ai Siqi (1910-1966) was a Chinese Marxist philosopher famous for his work *Popular Philosophy* (1936), which made Marxist philosophy accessible to a broad audience through simple language and everyday examples. With the continuous advancement of China's reform and opening up, how to continue promoting the popularization of Marxist philosophy under the new and changing circumstances became a major issue requiring urgent resolution. After the 1990s, Chen Xianda explored the construction of a discourse system for the popularization of Marxist philosophy through philosophical essays. He successively published life-oriented and popularized philosophical works such as *Leisurely Reflections*, *Night Talks in the Quiet Garden*, *Philosophical Musings*, and *Returning to Life*, making significant contributions to advancing the construction of a discourse system for the popularization of Chinese Marxist philosophy.

Chen Xianda’s philosophical essays are less a shift in mode of expression than a deepening of the understanding of the relationship between philosophy and life, or rather a philosophical action of discourse system reform that allows philosophy to further enter life and draw close to the masses. The philosophical essays bring together Chen Xianda’s long-standing philosophical reflections and responses to everyday life and the perplexing questions people often raise; the writing is elegant and enduring, the language plain and accessible. Some have described these essays as containing “the wisdom of philosophy, the grace of literature, and the weight of history.” He evaluates himself: “The greatest characteristic of my essays is that they are grounded in reality, focusing on the enlightenment of wisdom.” “When I write essays, I emphasize embodied understanding, using life experience as the base, combining it with knowledge I have gained from books, and making it my own.” He takes the philosophically resonant couplet that Jia Baoyu sees in Qin Keqing’s room in *Dream of the Red Chamber* — “A clear understanding of worldly affairs is all learning; skill in handling human relations is true literature” — as an example to show that philosophy’s “learning” and “literature” are originally reflections of life. “Philosophy should be one’s own. No matter how profound another person’s philosophy is, for you it is only knowledge; to study philosophy, one should study the history of philosophy and know what others have said, but to truly become a philosopher one must know what one is saying oneself. When philosophy becomes one’s own philosophy, it is not simply memorized in the mind, but dissolved into the bloodstream, truly transformed into one’s own mode of thinking and attitude toward life.”

Chen Xianda explains philosophy in a simple, vivid, and lively way. For example, he once used the everyday language of “coming over and going over” to distinguish and explain intuitive reflection theory and active reflection theory. “Cognition is not the object coming over to the subject, but the subject going over to the object. The object coming over to the subject is passive, intuitive reflection theory; the subject going over to the object is active, dynamic reflection theory. It is not that the world opens itself to me, but that I observe the world in practice. Precisely because of this, what is cognized, why it is cognized, and the level cognition can reach depend not on the object, but on the level of human practice. Humans cognize in practice.” Profound philosophical principles and accessible philosophical expression leap off the page.

In *Strolling Reflections*, there is an essay titled “A Marxist Philosopher Cannot Be a High Monk in the Desert,” which provides a vivid and brilliant explanation of the nature of Marxist philosophy and the mission of the philosopher: “A Marxist philosopher should not be a high monk; he cannot be one who merely harbors sharp wit in his belly, utters gathas from his mouth, and talks emptily of wisdom, yet is utterly useless for human cognition and practice.” “The essence of Marxist philosophy does not allow it to become metaphysics, to become speculative philosophy, to distance itself from life, to prattle on about philosophical principles, and to deviate from its mission and tasks.” Marxist philosophy possesses practicality and mass character; it can be grasped and applied by the broad masses. If it distances itself from the masses, “Marxist philosophy will walk into a dead end, and Marxist philosophy workers will become ‘superfluous people.’” These vivid words fully express Chen Xianda’s philosophical stance and philosophical pursuit. The master is truly a model for advancing the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times and its popularization in the contemporary era.

The philosopher has passed away, but his thought remains; a philosophical monument, forever in people’s hearts.
