General Secretary Xi Jinping, proceeding from the overall perspective of the development of the Party and the state’s undertakings, has proposed “shouldering the cultural mission of the New Era.” [1]1 “Shouldering the cultural mission of the New Era” refers to Xi Jinping’s call, particularly articulated at the 2023 Forum on Cultural Heritage and Development, to develop a socialist culture with Chinese characteristics and promote the creative transformation and innovative development of China’s fine traditional culture. This is a profound grasp of the laws governing the development of Chinese civilization and provides a theoretical guide for developing socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the New Era. Regarding questions such as what civilization is and how to develop socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the New Era, if one does not use the stance, viewpoint, and method of historical materialism to study and answer them, and if one does not grasp the Marxist view of civilization, one will fail to understand them clearly and will be unable to comprehend the true connotation and significance of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important discourse on shouldering the cultural mission of the New Era.

The classical writers of Marxism did not produce specialized works to systematically expound on the issue of social civilization. However, from their classical expositions that touch upon social civilization, one can study, understand, and thereby extract and summarize the basic stance, viewpoint, and method they upheld, and comprehend and sort out the Marxist view of civilization. Historical materialism is the theoretical basis of the Marxist view of civilization, and the Marxist view of civilization is a component part of historical materialism.

When the classical writers of Marxism used terms such as “civilization,” “civilized system,” “civilized country,” “civilized nation,” “civilized society,” “industrial and civilized society,” “modern civilization,” “civilized peoples,” and “European civilization” in specific contexts, generally speaking, the word “civilization” specifically referred to capitalist social civilization and the capitalist “civilized system.” They explicitly defined capitalist social civilization as “bourgeois civilization” and “the civilization of capital,” focusing on exposing the brutal facts of the exploiting class oppressing and exploiting the exploited class and nations under “bourgeois civilization” and “the civilization of capital.” They used historical materialism to conduct the most thorough, yet also the most historically dialectical, exposition, critique, and exposure of capitalist social civilization. They revealed the class nature of civilization in class societies and elucidated that the history of human civilization since the emergence of class societies is the history of class struggle.

First, when Marx and Engels used the word “civilization” in their analysis of capitalist society, under normal circumstances, it referred to capitalist social civilization and the capitalist “civilized system.”

In the 1848 *Communist Manifesto*, Marx and Engels used the term “civilization.” They stated: “The bourgeoisie, by the rapid improvement of all instruments of production, by the immensely facilitated means of communication, draws all, even the most barbarian, nations into civilization. The cheap prices of commodities are the heavy artillery with which it batters down all Chinese walls, with which it forces the barbarians’ intensely obstinate hatred of foreigners to capitulate. It compels all nations, on pain of extinction, to adopt the bourgeois mode of production; it compels them to introduce what it calls civilization into their midst, i.e., to become bourgeois themselves. In one word, it creates a world after its own image.” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 2, pp. 35-36) [2]2 The citation is from the *Manifesto of the Communist Party* (1848). The “civilization” they refer to here is precisely capitalist social civilization, elucidating that capitalism draws all nations into the “civilization” of capitalist society, “creates a world after its own image,” a capitalist “civilized” world.

In the 1880 work *Socialism: Utopian and Scientific*, Engels, borrowing Fourier’s terminology, regarded capitalist society as a “civilized system” and conducted a thorough critique of the capitalist “civilized system” (see Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 3, p. 532), [3]3 The reference is to Engels’s *Socialism: Utopian and Scientific* (1880), which draws on Charles Fourier’s critique of “civilization” as a system of social antagonism. pointing out the attribute of the capitalist social system inherent in capitalist social civilization.

Second, Marx, Engels, and Lenin profoundly exposed the class exploitation nature of capitalist social civilization, indicating that capitalist social civilization is precisely “bourgeois civilization,” a civilization built on the foundation of class opposition and class exploitation.

In the 1848 *Communist Manifesto*, Marx and Engels pointed out: capitalist social civilization “makes barbarian and semi-barbarian countries dependent on civilized ones, makes peasant nations dependent on bourgeois nations, makes the East dependent on the West.” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 2, p. 36) In the 1853 work *The Future Results of British Rule in India*, Marx explicitly used the term “bourgeois civilization.” He pointed out: “When we turn our gaze from the home country of bourgeois civilization to its colonies, bourgeois civilization’s extreme hypocrisy and its barbaric nature stand before us nakedly, for at home it puts on a respectable appearance, while in the colonies it is completely unashamed.” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 2, p. 690) He indicated that capitalist social civilization is “bourgeois civilization,” a civilization built on the foundation of brutal exploitation and naked plunder of colonies and semi-colonies.

In the *Grundrisse der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie* (Outlines of the Critique of Political Economy) (1857–1858 manuscript), Marx pointed out: “The progress of civilization only increases the power of the objective power over labor.” (Marx/Engels Complete Works, Vol. 30, p. 267) [4]4 This refers to Marx’s *Grundrisse* (1857–1858), a preparatory manuscript for *Capital*. In Chapter 12 of Volume 1 of *Capital* (1867), Marx used the term “industrial and civilized society.” Citing Adam Smith’s statement that “in every industrial and civilized society this is the natural condition of the laboring poor, i.e., of the great majority of the people” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 5, p. 419), Marx pointed out that “the division of labor in manufacture not only develops the social productive forces of labor for the capitalist instead of for the worker, but also develops them by crippling the individual worker. It produces new conditions for the domination of capital over labor. Therefore, on the one hand, it appears as a historical progress and a necessary developmental factor in the economic formation of society, and on the other hand, it appears as a civilized and refined means of exploitation.” (Ibid., p. 422) The “civilization” in Marx’s “industrial and civilized society” specifically refers to capitalist social civilization. He exposed how capitalism uses “civilized and refined means of exploitation” to force the poor working masses into a state of being exploited and oppressed.

In the 1875 *Critique of the Gotha Programme*, Marx used the term “civilized countries.” He explicitly stated: “‘Modern society’ is the capitalist society that exists in all civilized countries, more or less free from the admixture of medieval elements, more or less modified by the particular historical development of each country, more or less developed. ‘The modern state,’ on the other hand, varies with the state border. It is different in the Prussian-German Empire from what it is in Switzerland, different in England from what it is in the United States” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 3, p. 444). “But the different states of the different civilized countries, despite their motley diversity of form, all have this in common: they are based on modern bourgeois society, only one more or less capitalistically developed.” (Ibid.) The “civilized countries” Marx uses here refer to civilized states built on the foundation of modern bourgeois society. He explicitly states that all “civilized countries” of modern society are “based on modern bourgeois society” (Ibid.).

In the 1885 Preface to Volume 2 of *Capital*, Engels pointed out: “Why Marx’s theory of surplus value struck like a thunderbolt from a clear sky in all civilized countries.” (Marx/Engels Collected Works, Vol. 6, p. 19) The meaning of “civilized countries” used by Engels here is evidently the same as “civilized countries,” and the “civilization” it refers to still means capitalist social civilization.

In the preface to the second German edition of *The Condition of the Working Class in England* (1892), Engels used the term “civilized society” in expounding the theory of surplus value. He said: “The value produced by the worker’s additional hours of surplus labor is surplus value. This surplus value costs the capitalist nothing, yet it falls into the capitalist’s pocket. This is the foundation of a system that increasingly splits civilized society into, on the one hand, a handful of Rothschilds and Vanderbilts, who own all the means of production and consumption, and, on the other, the great mass of wage workers, who own nothing but their labor power.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 368) He held that capitalist civilized society is a “civilized society” built on the class exploitation of the working class by the bourgeoisie and on the opposition between the two great classes, and that its civilization is a civilization built on a social system based on the exploitation of the surplus value of the working class.

In the “Draft Theses on the Basic Tasks of the Second Congress of the Communist International” (1920), Lenin exposed the fact that the most civilized capitalist countries pursued “militarism and imperialism” and oppressed “colonies and weak countries” (see *Complete Works of Lenin*, Vol. 39, p. 184). In his “Report on the Current Situation” (1918), Lenin pointed out that those capitalist countries that styled themselves “civilized societies,” “civilized nations,” and “civilized worlds” boasted that “the ‘civilized,’ ‘cultured’ capitalist world is heading toward an unprecedented collapse” (*Complete Works of Lenin*, Vol. 34, p. 409). Lenin exposed the essence of class exploitation in capitalist social civilization, its hypocrisy, and its inevitable tendency toward extinction.

Third, Marx and Engels clarified that the history of the development of human civilization since class society is the history of class struggle, that it is precisely class struggle that drives the development and progress of human civilization in class society, and they revealed the objective law of the development and progress of human civilization in class society.

In *The Poverty of Philosophy* (1847), Marx pointed out: “From the moment civilization begins, production begins to be founded on the antagonism of ranks, estates, and classes, and finally on the antagonism between accumulated labor and immediate labor. Without antagonism there is no progress. This is the law that civilization has followed up to the present day.” (*Complete Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, p. 104) In the same work, Marx pointed out: “Since the most important thing is not to be deprived of the fruits of civilization (the productive forces already acquired), it is necessary to smash the traditional forms in which those productive forces arose. From then on, the formerly revolutionary class becomes a conservative class.” (Ibid., p. 155) In his 1846 letter to Annenkov, Marx said: “In order not to lose the fruits of civilization, people are obliged to change all the social forms they have inherited as soon as their mode of intercourse [commerce] no longer suits the productive forces already acquired.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 10, pp. 43–44) He held that class struggle, determined by the contradictory movement of productive forces and relations of production, drives the development of civilization in class society.

In *The Principles of Communism* (1847), Engels pointed out that the periodic economic crises of capitalism “are a threat to all civilization: they not only cast the proletarians into the abyss of poverty, but also ruin many bourgeois” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 682), and that “large-scale industry makes the social development of all civilized countries roughly the same, so that in all these countries the bourgeoisie and the proletariat have become the two decisive classes of society, and the struggle between them has become the main struggle of the day” (Ibid., p. 687), which necessarily demands the establishment of an entirely new social formation. In *The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State* (1884), Engels pointed out: “Since the basis of the age of civilization is the exploitation of one class by another, all its development proceeds in constant contradiction.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, pp. 196–197) Here he used the term “age of civilization,” holding that the “age of civilization” is the age of class differentiation and class opposition, the age in which class struggle drives the progress of civilization.

Marx and Engels held that class struggle is the motive force driving the development of civilized society, that capitalist social civilization has produced the contradiction, opposition, and struggle between the two great classes of the bourgeoisie and the working class, and that the struggle of the working class against the bourgeoisie necessarily gives birth to a new social formation, that is, to a new and progressive civilization.

Fourth, in discussing capitalist social civilization, Marx and Engels, from the perspective of historical dialectics, affirmed the progressive side of capitalist social civilization, emphasized “the great civilizing role of capital,” and clearly stated that capitalist social civilization is a more progressive civilization than the social civilizations that preceded it.

In “The Condition of England. The Eighteenth Century” (1844), Engels held that capitalist industrial production itself is a “raising of the level of civilization,” and that it can generate new needs, new branches of production, and new improvements (see *Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 102). In the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844*, Marx used the phrase “the civilization of capital.” He pointed out: “The victory of the civilization of capital lies precisely in the fact that capital discovers and impels human labor, rather than dead things, to become the source of wealth.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 176) In *The Principles of Communism* (1847), Engels emphasized the historical role of capitalist social civilization. He pointed out: “Large-scale industry connects the peoples of all countries with one another, unites all local small markets into a world market, prepares civilization and progress everywhere, and makes everything that happens in the civilized countries necessarily affect all other countries.” (Ibid., p. 680)

In the *Grundrisse* (1857–1858), Marx affirmed various phenomena of capitalist civilizational progress: “All progress of civilization, or in other words all growth of the social productive forces, may also be said to be all growth of the productive forces of labor itself, such as science, invention, the division and combination of labor, the improvement of means of communication, the opening up of the world market, machinery, and so on” (*Complete Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 30, p. 267), all of which are fruits of capitalist social civilization. On this basis, Marx clearly pointed out that the progress of capitalist society reveals “the great civilizing role of capital.” “Hence the great civilizing role of capital; it creates a social stage compared with which all earlier stages of society appear only as local developments of humanity and as idolatry of nature.” (Ibid., p. 390) In Volume 3 of *Capital* (1894), Marx pointed out: “One of the civilizing aspects of capital is that it extracts this surplus labor in a manner and under conditions that are more favorable than earlier forms of slavery and serfdom to the development of the productive forces, to the development of social relations, and to the creation of the elements of a higher new formation.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 7, pp. 927–928)

In the preface to the fourth edition of *The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State* (1884), Engels used the term “civilized nations.” He pointed out: “The rediscovery of the primitive matriarchal gens as the stage preceding the patriarchal gens of the civilized nations has the same significance for primitive history as Darwin’s theory of evolution has for biology and Marx’s theory of surplus value for political economy.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, p. 28) The “civilized nations” of which Engels speaks here also refer specifically to capitalist social civilization, and he likewise affirmed the historical progressiveness of capitalist social civilization.

The above overview shows that when the classical Marxist writers used the term "civilization" to discuss capitalist society, what they meant by civilization was precisely the civilization of capitalist society. While affirming the historical progressiveness of capitalist social civilization and affirming "the great civilizing role of capital," they proceeded from the fact that class struggle, determined by the basic contradiction between productive forces and relations of production, is the cause of the development and progress of civilization in class society, and profoundly exposed the class-exploitative nature and hypocrisy of capitalist social civilization. They held that the exploitation of surplus value causes capitalist society to become increasingly split, split into the owners of capital and the wage workers who possess nothing but their labor power, producing two fundamentally opposed classes, namely "the bourgeois or bourgeoisie" and "the proletariat or working class." The class foundation of capitalist social civilization is the class division and antagonism between the bourgeoisie and the working class, established on the basis of the exploitation of surplus value; the capitalists' exploitation of the surplus value of the working class is the foundation of the "civilized system" of capitalist society, and this is the most fundamental feature of capitalist social civilization. They clearly revealed that the civilization of capitalist society is bourgeois civilization in its class nature, holding that the "civilized system" of capitalist society serves the interests of the bourgeoisie, oppressing the working class and the broad masses of working people at home, and carrying out imperialist aggression abroad.

In analyzing the ills and developmental trends of capitalist social civilization, the classical Marxist writers profoundly recognized that capitalist social civilization inevitably leads to proletarian revolution and to the birth of a higher civilization of communist society. They clearly pointed out that capitalist social civilization forged the proletariat as the great force for human liberation, that the necessary result of the development of capitalist social civilization is the outbreak of proletarian socialist revolution, and that through the transition of socialist society under the dictatorship of the proletariat, communist social civilization will inevitably replace capitalist social civilization, foreshadowing the historical developmental trend of future social civilization.

First, Marx and Engels pointed out that the "old civilization" of capitalism is a "criminal civilization," and that capitalist social civilization is "the last stage of the old civilization."

In his letter to Ludwig Feuerbach of August 11, 1844, Marx wrote: "But in any case, history is turning these 'barbarians' of our civilized society into the practical factor of human emancipation." (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 10, p. 14) He clearly pointed out that the proletariat in civilized capitalist society is the great practical force for human emancipation.

In his letter to Marx of early October 1844, Engels pointed out that capitalist social civilization is "the last stage of the old civilization": "In recent years the workers have reached the last stage of the old civilization; they are opposing the old social system through rapidly increasing crime, robbery, and murder." (Ibid., p. 19)

In The Civil War in France of 1871, Marx pointed out: "this criminal civilization, founded on the enslavement of labor, whenever it has bloodily triumphed over its fighters who sacrificed themselves for a new and better society, has drowned the groans of its victims in a clamor of slander that echoes around the world" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, p. 175); "That is indeed so. Whenever the slaves and oppressed of bourgeois order rise up against their masters, the civilization and justice of that order reveal their savage face. At such times, that civilization and justice are naked barbarism and lawless revenge. Each new crisis in the class struggle between appropriator and producer increasingly clearly proves this fact." (Ibid., pp. 173-174) In summing up the lessons of the Paris Commune uprising, Marx angrily condemned the bourgeoisie's cruel and bloody suppression of the Communards: "The bourgeoisie and its army restored in June 1848 the long-abandoned practice of war of shooting defenseless prisoners. Since then, wherever popular unrest has been suppressed in Europe and India, this barbaric practice has been followed more or less strictly. This proves that it is truly 'an advance in civilization'!" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, pp. 177-178)

Second, Marx, Engels, and Lenin held that in almost all countries of capitalist social civilization, the development of large-scale industry and the bourgeoisie's forceful suppression of the working class inevitably give rise to a socialist revolution in which the proletariat unites, creating the preconditions for realizing communist social civilization.

In "The Communists and Karl Heinzen" of 1847, Engels pointed out: "In all civilized countries, the necessary result of democracy is the political rule of the proletariat, and the political rule of the proletariat is in turn the primary precondition for implementing all communist measures." (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 666) In "Principles of Communism" of 1847, he further pointed out: "But they also see that in almost all civilized countries the development of the proletariat is violently suppressed, and hence the enemies of the communists use all their strength to provoke revolution" (Ibid., p. 685); "Moreover, the mere fact that large-scale industry has established the world market binds the peoples of the globe, especially the peoples of the civilized countries, so closely together that each people is affected by what happens in another country... The communist revolution will not be merely a revolution in one country, but will take place simultaneously in all civilized countries, at least in England, America, France, and Germany. In each of these countries it will develop more quickly or more slowly depending on whether the country has more developed industry, more wealth, and a greater quantity of productive forces. Therefore, the communist revolution will be slowest and most difficult in Germany, and fastest and easiest in England. It will also greatly influence the other countries of the world and will completely change and greatly accelerate their original course of development. It is a world revolution, and so will have a world arena." (Ibid., p. 687) In the Critique of the Gotha Programme of 1875, Marx pointed out: "'The working class, for its own emancipation, works first of all within the framework of the modern national state, while at the same time conscious that the necessary result of its efforts, which are common to the workers of all civilized countries, will be the international fraternal union of peoples.'" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, p. 438) In "On the Emancipation of the Peasants in Russia" of 1858, Marx called the civilization of exploiting society a "false civilization" and the future social civilization that will replace it a "true and universal civilization," namely communist social civilization. The "true and universal civilization" will replace the "false civilization" promoted by the exploiting classes of history. (See Complete Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 12, p. 725) The expositions of Marx and Engels show that capitalist social civilization, marked by large-scale industry, created the necessary preconditions for the proletarian socialist revolution and opened up the inevitable historical course in which communist social civilization will replace capitalist social civilization.

Lenin inherited the thought of Marx and Engels. In "On the Eve of Bloody Sunday" of 1905, he pointed out: "The proletariat has demonstrated by its deeds that it is, and it alone is, the pillar of modern civilization." (Complete Works of Lenin, Vol. 9, p. 204) In "Greeting International Women Workers' Day" of 1920, he pointed out: "Only the dictatorship of the proletariat, only the socialist state, can attain and has already attained a high level of civilization." (Complete Works of Lenin, Vol. 38, p. 210) In "On Our Revolution" of 1923, he further pointed out that "the road to socialism" is the precondition of civilization. (See Complete Works of Lenin, Vol. 43, p. 376)

In summary, it can be seen that the classical Marxist writers, standing on the position of the proletariat, strongly condemned the civilization of capitalist society as a "criminal civilization" and "false civilization" that suppressed the proletariat, and clearly pointed out that whenever the proletariat rose up against the bourgeoisie, the "civilization and justice of this order" would "reveal its savage visage" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, p. 174), thoroughly exposing the brutal class nature, hypocrisy, and deceitfulness of the civilization of capitalist society. They clearly stated that the civilization of capitalist society is "the last stage of the old civilization," and that this "old civilization" would inevitably be replaced by a "truly universal civilization," namely, the civilization of communist society. They clearly held that the civilization of capitalist society created the social conditions for the workers of the whole world to unite in carrying out the proletarian socialist revolution and establishing the political rule of the proletariat, in order to overthrow capitalist society; that the proletariat is the material force for creating the civilization of communist society; and that only the dictatorship of the proletariat, only the socialist state, can attain a "high degree of civilization."

Referring to Morgan's periodization of the historical development of human civilization, the classical Marxist writers used the term "epoch of civilization," dividing it into "ancient civilization" and "modern civilization." By "ancient civilization" they meant the civilization of social formations preceding the civilization of capitalist society, and by "modern civilization" they meant the civilization of capitalist society. They criticized the historical idealist view of civilization held by some Western bourgeois politicians and scholars, who regarded social civilization as the result of purely spiritual movement, and clearly pointed out that the formation and progress of social civilization are the result of the development of social productive forces. They summarized the different stages and forms of the evolution and development of human social civilization, and revealed the objective laws of the historical development of human social civilization.

First, when Marx and Engels used terms such as "ancient civilization," "Indian civilization," "semi-civilized system," and "old civilized countries," their reference to civilization specifically meant the social civilization that preceded the civilization of capitalist society.

In The Peasant War in Germany of 1850, Engels pointed out: "The Middle Ages developed from raw barbarism. It swept away ancient civilization, ancient philosophy, politics, and jurisprudence, in order to start everything anew" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 2, p. 235). Here, the "ancient civilization" mentioned by Engels should be understood as the social civilization that preceded the civilization of capitalist society.

In "The Future Results of British Rule in India" of 1853, Marx stated: "The British were the first conquerors whose civilization was superior to that of India, and hence were not influenced by Indian civilization. They destroyed the native communes, ruined the native industry, and leveled everything great and sublime in native society, thereby destroying the civilization of India" (ibid., p. 686). The "civilization of India" he refers to here is the civilization of slave society, and even of feudal society, while the "civilization" of the "British" is the civilization of capitalist society, which is of a higher degree of civilization than the "civilization of India."

In "Persia and China" of 1857, Engels pointed out: "In China, the rotten semi-civilized system of this oldest of countries fought the Europeans with its own means" (ibid., p. 622). The "semi-civilized system" of China he refers to here, as opposed to the "civilized system" of European capitalism, in fact denotes the civilization of Chinese feudal society. In the article "The Housing Question" of 1872, Engels pointed out: "A period in which an old civilized country makes the transition from manufacture and small-scale production to large-scale industry, and in which this transition is accelerated by exceptionally favorable circumstances, is for the most part also a period of 'housing shortage'" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, p. 239). Here, the civilization of the "old civilized country" clearly also refers to the social civilization that preceded the civilization of capitalist society.

Second, although Marx and Engels sometimes borrowed the term "barbarism" used by Westerners to refer to the state of social civilization preceding capitalist society, they fundamentally differed from the narrow bourgeois historical viewpoint, and they highly affirmed the "ancient civilization" that preceded the civilization of capitalist society.

Some Western bourgeois politicians and scholars regarded the "ancient civilization" of human society, especially the "ancient civilization" of Eastern peoples, as a "state of barbarism," propagating narrow idealist historical views of the bourgeoisie such as the "theory of the centrality of Western civilization." Their labeling of "ancient civilization" as "barbarism" was a denigration of "ancient civilization," and especially of the "ancient civilization" of Eastern peoples. This is fundamentally different from the Marxist view of civilization of Marx and Engels, who highly affirmed "ancient civilization," especially the "ancient civilization" created by Eastern peoples. As Comrade Mao Zedong pointed out in his 1959 "Conversation with Leaders of Some Latin American Communist Parties," it is necessary to break down the absurd claims and superstitious notions of Western bourgeois politicians that "Americans are civilized" and "we are more barbaric than they are," which denigrate Eastern civilization. He firmly opposed the view of some Western bourgeois politicians and scholars who "say we are barbaric and uncivilized," holding that "this must be turned around" (see Collected Works of Mao Zedong, Vol. 8, p. 21). In his 1958 "Conversation with the Delegation of Young Africans from Black Africa," he pointed out: "Because we in China have never occupied other countries in the past or present, and will never occupy the United States or Britain as colonies in the future, we have always been a civilized country" (Collected Works of Mao Zedong, Vol. 7, p. 382). The truly barbaric countries should be the imperialist bandits who cruelly oppress, exploit, and slaughter the peoples of colonial and semi-colonial countries, while the Eastern peoples are civilized countries, because they have never occupied or colonized other nations.

Third, applying the standpoint, viewpoint, and method of historical materialism, and in accordance with the historical materialist doctrine of the "five social formations," Engels held that the entire "epoch of civilization" of humanity is divided into two major stages, "ancient civilization" and "modern civilization": "ancient civilization" is the civilization of the several social formations preceding the civilization of capitalist society, and "modern civilization" is the civilization of capitalist society. This clearly sorts out the historical process of development of the forms of human social civilization.

In Socialism: Utopian and Scientific of 1880, Engels, borrowing Fourier's account of the periodization of history, pointed out: "He divides the entire course of history up to the present into four stages of development: savagery, barbarism, patriarchalism, and civilization. The last of these corresponds to what is now called bourgeois society, that is, the social system that has developed since the sixteenth century, and he points out: 'This civilized system makes every simple vice of the age of barbarism take on a complex, ambiguous, double-faced, and hypocritical form of existence'; the epoch of civilization moves in a 'vicious circle,' in contradictions that it constantly reproduces and is unable to overcome, so that the result it achieves is always the opposite of what it hopes or pretends to hope to achieve" (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 3, p. 532). By drawing on Fourier's critique and exposure of the civilization of capitalist society, Engels profoundly revealed that the "epoch of civilization" of human society moves in a "vicious circle" of class struggle, and clearly pointed out the hypocrisy of the capitalist "civilized system" and the historical inevitability of its eventual turn into its opposite.

In *The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State* (1884), Engels stated: “We can now sum up Morgan’s periods as follows: the period of savagery is the period in which the appropriation of natural products ready for use predominates; the artificial products are chiefly tools used as aids to such appropriation. The period of barbarism is the period in which cattle-raising and agriculture are learned, and the period in which methods of increasing the production of natural products through human activity are learned. The period of civilization is the period in which the further processing of natural products is learned, the period of industry proper and of art.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, p. 38) Here Engels borrows Morgan’s formulation that “the period of civilization is the period in which the further processing of natural products is learned, the period of industry proper and of art.” In my view, the most representative example of “further processing of natural products” is the processing by humans in primitive society of stone, a natural product, into labor tools or articles of daily use, such as fishing implements, bows and arrows, and even pottery. This should be the beginning and germination of human civilization, and may also be said to be the germination and origin of the “ancient civilization” of primitive society. Of course, “the period of civilization is the period in which the further processing of natural products is learned, the period of industry proper and of art” refers to the civilization of slave society, the civilization of feudal society, and even the civilization of capitalist society, and especially to the period of “modern civilization,” that is, the civilization of capitalist society. This is the historical process of the mature development of human social civilization.

In the same work, Engels points out: “Civilization is the stage of social development at which the division of labor, the exchange between individuals arising from it, and the commodity production that combines the two, attain their full development and overturn the whole of pre-existing society.” (Ibid., p. 193) Here Engels holds that the full development of the division of labor, the commodity exchange arising from it, and production truly brings human society into the “period of civilization.”

He continues in the same work: “According to what our examination of the most ancient and most civilized peoples can show, such is the origin of monogamy.” (Ibid., p. 77) The “most ancient and most civilized peoples” clearly refers to the social civilization of the period of the disintegration of primitive society, when patriarchal authority and monogamy appeared, that is, when private property and class differentiation began to emerge. He then points out: “Above, we stood at the cradle of Greco-Roman civilization. Here we stand at its coffin.” (Ibid., p. 166) The Greco-Roman civilization mentioned here is the civilization of slave society. “The social classes of the ninth century were formed not in the decline of a dying civilization but in the birth pangs of a new one.” (Ibid., p. 174) The “dying civilization” he refers to here is the civilization of slave society, and the “new civilization” is the civilization of feudal society.

The above analysis shows that although Engels borrowed Morgan’s term “period of civilization,” he did not follow Morgan’s historical periodization in calling the period before the “period of civilization” the “period of savagery” and the “period of barbarism,” but rather explicitly divided the “period of civilization” into two major stages: “ancient civilization” and “modern civilization.” “Ancient civilization” and “modern civilization” together constitute the entire “period of civilization” of human society. From Engels’s overall discussion concerning civilization, it can be seen that “the origin of civilization” and “the beginning of the period of civilization” are not the same thing, nor do they refer to the same stage of historical development of social civilization. “Ancient civilization” should include the originating civilization of primitive society, as well as the civilization of slave society and the civilization of feudal society; “modern civilization” is the civilization of capitalist society. The “period of civilization” refers to the civilization of slave society, the civilization of feudal society, and up to the civilization of capitalist society since primitive society split into class society. From the “ancient civilization” of slave and feudal society to “modern civilization” is the developmental course of the “period of civilization” of human society. The “period of civilization” clearly does not include the originating civilization of primitive society.

Fourth, Engels indicates that since the dissolution of public ownership in primitive society, all “old civilizations” of class-exploitative society have been civilizations built on the basis of class exploitation and class antagonism; the emergence of classes and the state is an important marker for judging that human society has entered the “period of civilization.”

In *The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State* (1884), Engels further points out: “The stage of commodity production with which civilization begins is economically characterized by: (1) the introduction of metallic money, and thus of money capital, interest and usury; (2) the appearance of merchants as an intermediate class between the producers; (3) the appearance of private property in land and of the mortgage; (4) the appearance of slave labor as the dominant form of production. The family form corresponding to civilization and definitively established with it is monogamy, the domination of the man over the woman, and the individual family as the economic unit of society. The state is the summary of civilized society; in all typical periods it is without exception the state of the ruling class, and in all cases it is in essence a machine for the suppression of the oppressed and exploited class. In addition, the period of civilization has the following features: on the one hand, it fixes the opposition between town and country as the basis of the entire social division of labor; on the other, it introduces the testamentary system, by which the owner can dispose of his property even after his death. This system, which directly conflicts with the ancient gentile system, did not exist in Athens until the time of Solon; in Rome it was introduced very early, though we do not know when; among the Germans it was introduced by the priests, so that the honest German might leave his inheritance to the church without hindrance.” (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, pp. 195-196) “With these basic institutions, civilization accomplished things that the ancient gentile society was wholly unable to do” (Ibid., p. 196), “and since the basis of civilization is the exploitation of one class by another, all its development proceeds in constant contradiction.” (Ibid., pp. 196-197)

Here, one can clearly sort out how Engels analyzed and understood the development of human social civilization through historical materialism. In the same work, he pointed out: “With the emergence of slavery, which attained its fullest development in the age of civilization, came the first great split of society into an exploiting and an exploited class. This split continued throughout the whole period of civilization. Slavery was the first form of exploitation peculiar to the ancient world of Greco-Roman times; it was followed by serfdom in the Middle Ages and wage labor in modern times. These were the three great forms of servitude characteristic of the three great periods of civilization; open and, more recently, disguised slavery always accompanied civilization.” (Ibid., p. 195) His phrase “slavery, which attained its fullest development in the age of civilization” clearly indicates that in slave society occurred the first great split of society into an exploiting and an exploited class, and from then on class differentiation and opposition “continued throughout the whole period of civilization,” that is, the entire “age of civilization.” He held that the division of labor, the commodity exchange and commodity production arising from the division of labor, as well as private ownership and the class differentiation and opposition it caused, were important markers of humanity’s entry into the “age of civilization.” He pointed out that “slavery,” “serfdom in the Middle Ages,” and “wage labor in modern times” were respectively the three institutional forms of private ownership of the means of production in slave society, feudal society, and capitalist society, and were the “three great forms of servitude” peculiar to the three great periods of the entire “age of civilization.” He called “wage labor in modern times,” that is, capitalist wage labor, “disguised slavery.” Engels’ exposition shows that the so-called “age of civilization” contained the civilization of slave society, the civilization of feudal society, and the civilization of capitalist society. He held that the “age of civilization” since slave society began with the division of labor and the commodity exchange and production arising from it. Economically, it had four characteristics: the emergence of money capital, interest and usury; the emergence of a commercial class; the emergence of private ownership of land and mortgage; and the emergence of slave labor. In family form, there appeared the individual family characterized by monogamous marriage and the rule of men over women. Politically, the characteristic was the emergence of the state: “The state is the summary of civilized society,” and “in essence [it is] a machine for the suppression of the oppressed and exploited class” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 4, p. 195). He also pointed out other characteristics of the “age of civilization,” namely the emergence of the old division of labor between town and country and the system of inheritance of private property. Through his analysis of the characteristics of the “age of civilization,” Engels made clear that the “age of civilization,” whether “ancient civilization,” that is, the civilization of slave society and feudal society, or “modern civilization,” that is, the civilization of capitalist society, all bore the characteristics of class exploitation, class oppression, class contradiction, the opposition between town and country, and the old division of labor. He exposed the class-exploitative essence of all previous class societies as “forms of servitude,” and revealed the developmental history of the entire “age of civilization” of class society from “ancient civilization” to “modern civilization.”

It should be pointed out here that the “ancient civilization” of which Engels spoke should also include the initial, germinal, and originating civilization of primitive society. For Engels borrowed Morgan’s formulation that humanity learned “to make further progress in the processing of natural products,” and this exposition contains the idea that civilization began with humanity’s learning to process natural products, beginning first with the processing of natural things into tools. In fact, in primitive society, humanity already learned to process natural things into tools of production and articles of daily use, and “ancient civilization” began from this point. Of course, his taking the division of labor, the commodity exchange and production arising from it, private ownership, and the emergence of classes and the state as important markers of the formation of social civilization and of humanity’s entry into the “age of civilization” is not contradictory to his judgment, which he endorsed, that the origin of ancient civilization began with the making of tools. And from slave society, which came after the dissolution of the public ownership of primitive society, humanity entered the “age of civilization.” The “ancient civilization” that entered the “age of civilization” refers to the civilization of slave society and the civilization of feudal society.

Fifth, Marx and Engels profoundly criticized the idealist view of civilization and, applying historical materialism, elucidated the true causes of the emergence, formation, and development of civilization.

In “The Condition of England: The Eighteenth Century” of 1844, Engels pointed out that historical materialism holds that “civilization is a practical matter, a quality of society” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 97). In the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, Marx pointed out that civilization is “the object that the worker creates” (Ibid., p. 158). In the Grundrisse (1857–1858), he further pointed out: “All the progress of civilization,” or in other words, is “all growth of the social productive forces” (see Complete Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 30, p. 267). In “The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man,” published in 1896, Engels pointed out that the bourgeoisie attributes the “rapidly advancing civilization” entirely “to the head, to the development and activity of the brain” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 9, p. 557), thereby criticizing the idealist view of civilization that reduces civilization to a product of the mind. Marx and Engels emphasized that civilization is the result of “all growth of the social productive forces,” is “a practical matter,” and is “the object that the worker creates.” Applying historical materialism, they fully explained the true causes and the truly driving forces of the emergence of social civilization.

From the above synthesis of the classical expositions of the Marxist classical writers on social civilization, one can grasp their basic views and opinions on human social civilization, and can clearly see how they applied the basic principles and basic methods of historical materialism to analyze and understand the problem of social civilization, thereby elaborating the Marxist view of civilization.

The word civilization, in the broadest sense, can be used in many different ways, such as Eastern civilization and Western civilization, ancient civilization and modern civilization, industrial civilization, agricultural civilization, and nomadic civilization, the civilization of slave society, the civilization of feudal society, the civilization of capitalist society, and the civilization of socialist society; it can be used from different disciplines, such as history, ethnology, anthropology, sociology, and archaeology; and it can have different referents and different connotations. The Marxist classical writers, in using the word “civilization,” imposed strict limits, that is, they endowed the concept of civilization with a definition grounded in historical materialism, and in using the term “civilization” to discuss the problem of social civilization, they ran through the standpoint, viewpoint, and method of historical materialism, embodying the Marxist view of civilization.

Systematically sorting through the classical Marxist expositions, arguments, and theses on social civilization, the author holds that the Marxist view of civilization mainly contains the following important viewpoints.

First, the nature, condition, and degree of the social productive forces are the fundamental standard for understanding the emergence and development of human social civilization and its nature, condition, and degree. The Marxist classical writers held that the productive forces are the ultimate driving force of the progress of human social civilization, that the masses of the people are the creators of social civilization, and that the contradictory movement between the productive forces and the relations of production, and between the economic base and the superstructure, is the true cause of the progress of human social civilization. For example, Marx pointed out: “All the progress of civilization,” or in other words, is “all growth of the social productive forces” (see Complete Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 30, p. 267). Civilization is “the object that the worker creates” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 158), and “in order not to lose the fruits of civilization, people are compelled to change all their inherited social forms when their mode of intercourse [commerce] no longer corresponds to the acquired productive forces” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 10, pp. 43–44).

Second, in judging the nature, condition, and degree of a society's civilization, one should first take as the basic basis the nature, condition, and degree of the social formation in which that society's civilization is situated. Proceeding from the fundamental cause that the basic contradiction between productive forces and relations of production, and between economic base and superstructure, gives rise to the development and change of human society, and following the principle of the general laws of the development and evolution of human social formations, the classical Marxist writers, on the basis of the "five social formations" doctrine—according to which the development of human social formations proceeds from primitive society, slave society, feudal society, and capitalist society, and finally through the transitional stage of socialist society to communist society (socialist society being the first stage of communist society)—regard the civilization of human society as a developmental process of "five forms of social civilization": civilization originating in primitive society, slave-owning social civilization, feudal social civilization, capitalist wage-labor social civilization, and communist public-ownership social civilization (socialist ownership social civilization being its first stage of development), thereby revealing the law by which the civilization of human society continuously develops from lower to higher levels. (See *Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, pp. 38–193)

Third, civilization is a historical category; one cannot use an abstract, eternal, transhistorical "universal civilization" to measure the concrete forms of social civilization of different classes, different countries, and different nations under different historical conditions. Proceeding from the relations of production determined by the productive forces, from the sum total of relations of production, that is, from the superstructure determined by the economic base, from the nature and condition of ownership of the means of production, and from the nature and condition of the political superstructure, the classical Marxist writers scientifically delimit and define the concrete forms of social civilization at different stages of development of human society with different natures and conditions; they regard the civilization of human society as historical, concrete, and constantly developing and changing, holding that there has never existed an abstract, transhistorical, "universal" social civilization; and they hold that social civilization is a social phenomenon and possesses sociality.

Fourth, one must use the viewpoint and method of class and class struggle to analyze and understand the phenomenon of social civilization in class society. Applying the viewpoint of class struggle and the method of class analysis to the social civilization of class society, the classical Marxist writers profoundly revealed that the civilization of class-exploitative society is a civilization built on the basis of class antagonism and class exploitation, holding that class struggle is the motive force of the development and progress of human social civilization since class society, and that the history of human social civilization since the dissolution of the public ownership of primitive society is the history of class struggle. In class society, social civilization has a distinct class character; there is no supra-class social civilization, and therefore the social civilization of class society must be subjected to class analysis. Marx and Engels took the emergence of classes and the state as the basic and principal mark of human society's entry into the "age of civilization." Marx pointed out that civilization "is the quality of society" (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 97). Sociality is the developmental characteristic of human civilization, and class character is the concentrated expression of the sociality of civilization in class society. Marx and Engels held that from the "ancient civilization" of slave society, which began with the dissolution of the public ownership of primitive society, to the "ancient civilization" of feudal society, and on to the "modern civilization" of capitalism, all are social civilizations of class exploitation and antagonism, whose basis is in every case "the exploitation of one class by another" (ibid., p. 196); "every step forward in civilization is also a step forward in inequality" (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 9, p. 147); "the state is the summation of civilized society" (*Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 4, p. 195); and "in all cases it is in essence a machine for the suppression of the oppressed and exploited class" (ibid.). The antagonism and struggle between classes is the objective law that the development of civilization follows. As Comrade Mao Zedong said in 1949 in "Cast Away Illusions, Prepare for Struggle": "Class struggle, the victory of some classes, the elimination of others. This is history, this is the history of several thousand years of civilization." (*Selected Works of Mao Zedong*, Vol. 4, p. 1487)

Fifth, every social civilization is historically progressive relative to the social civilization that preceded it, and every form of social civilization is necessarily superseded by a new form of social civilization. Applying the most thorough historical dialectics, the classical Marxist writers elucidated that the social civilization of any social formation is historically progressive relative to the social civilization of the preceding social formation and has made contributions to the development of the civilization of human society. For example, Marx and Engels gave a dialectical evaluation of the progressiveness of capitalist social civilization: they affirmed "the great civilizing role of capital"; but they held that capitalist social civilization, built on the basis of the antagonism and struggle between the two great classes of capitalist society, is "old civilization," which inevitably gives rise to the proletarian socialist revolution and, through the dictatorship of the proletariat (the political rule of the proletariat), is superseded by a new form of civilization—communist social civilization, the "truly universal civilization." They pointed out that the proletariat is the material force that buries the old class social civilization and creates the new social civilization, and they scientifically foresaw the historical inevitability of the future new civilization of human society, namely communist social civilization, replacing capitalist social civilization.

Sixth, the idealist conception of history's view of civilization must be thoroughly criticized. Standing on the standpoint of historical materialism, the classical Marxist writers thoroughly criticized the narrow idealist view of civilization of some Western bourgeois politicians and scholars, who argued that human social civilization is a pure product of spirit, advocated a dualistic division of the history of human social civilization into "barbarism–civilization," proclaimed that pre-capitalist society was a "state of barbarism" and that "capitalist society is the end point of civilization," and propagated such views as "the centrality of Western civilization." For example, in "The Part Played by Labour in the Transition from Ape to Man," published in 1896, Engels criticized the erroneous view of certain bourgeois scholars that human reason and spirit are the ultimate motive force of human civilization, criticized the idealist view of civilization that attributes "rapidly advancing civilization" wholly "to the head, to the development and activity of the brain," and pointed out that the historical activity that drives the progress of civilization should be based on the "needs" of real material production and life, not on the thinking of a few individuals. (See *Collected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 9, p. 557) Productive practical activity is the foundation of the progress of human civilization, and the productive forces are the fundamental motive force driving the progress of human social civilization. Civilization is an important category of historical materialism that marks, embodies, and summarizes the nature, condition, and level of the progress of human society. The "clash of civilizations" theory trumpeted by Huntington today is a contemporary variant of the idealist view of civilization criticized by the classical Marxist writers. The transhistorical, abstract "clash of civilizations" theory obliterates the fact that the history of human civilization since class society is the history of class struggle, and attempts to replace the theory of class struggle.

From the expositions of the classical Marxist writers, one can clearly sort out the basic content and basic viewpoints of the Marxist view of civilization, that is, the Marxist general view and basic principles concerning social civilization. Although they did not give a clear definition of civilization, from their expositions concerning the question of social civilization it can be seen that civilization should be the mark, embodiment, and summary of the condition, nature, and degree of the progress of human society. We must learn to use the standpoint, viewpoint, and method of historical materialism to make historical, concrete, dialectical, and class-based analyses and understandings of the question of social civilization.
