Marx on the Poverty of the Proletariat as Institutional Poverty
Institutional poverty refers to a type of poverty caused by the institutional injustice of society or the state. Hegel held that "when the mass of the populace sinks to a certain level of subsistence — the level that is naturally adjusted as necessary for members of society — and thereby loses the sense of justice, integrity, and self-respect that comes from self-support, a rabble is produced." In other words, he believed that the "rabble" arises "naturally" owing to its own individual differences rather than the institutional injustice of society or the state. Marx, combining the characteristics of his own era and taking the proletariat as an example, subjected this to profound criticism. He pointed out: "The proletariat is not composed of the poor who are formed naturally but of those artificially produced, not of the masses mechanically crushed under the weight of society but of those produced by the acute dissolution of society, particularly by the dissolution of the middle estates." That is to say, on the whole, the poverty of the proletariat is caused by the institutional injustice of capitalist society rather than by the individual differences of the proletariat. As for whether there exists individual poverty of the proletariat "naturally" formed owing to individual differences, Marx did not rule out this possibility, but it is clearly not the focus of his attention. Marx's analytical judgment that the poverty of the proletariat is a form of institutional poverty is the theoretical foundation on which Marx established his thought on the fundamental emancipation of the proletariat and even of all humanity. Marx further scientifically demonstrated the view that the poverty of the proletariat is institutional poverty through profound critiques of alienated labor, class rule, surplus value, and so on in capitalist society. On this basis, this article proposes to carry out a concrete analysis from the following three aspects.
I. Alienated Labor: The Social Root of Proletarian Poverty
Marx focused on alienated labor at an early stage and, through an in-depth analysis of the logical connection between alienated labor and private property, revealed the social root of proletarian poverty.
Alienated labor, or the alienation of labor, contains two concepts: alienation and labor. This means that, to grasp clearly the connotation of alienated labor or the alienation of labor as a concept, one must first understand the connotation of alienation and labor as concepts.
Alienation refers to the process of the gradual loss of essence and the representation of its results. The existence of a thing, or the thing that exists, is established on the specific essence it possesses. That is to say, once the essence is established, the thing exists according to its original condition; conversely, once the essence is lost, the thing can only become something other, and what becomes something other is necessarily an alienation of the original thing. In this way, alienation and the loss of essence have an existential connection. In Marx's writings, concepts bearing a family resemblance to the concept of alienation include externalization, reification, and so on. Although Marx often used these three concepts in an undifferentiated context, careful reflection reveals their subtle differences: alienation highlights the gradual loss of the overall essence of a thing, externalization emphasizes the externalization of the inner aspect of a thing, and reification emphasizes the objectification of the subject or the subjectification of the object. Whether externalization or reification, both are further explanations of alienation, that is, further explanations of the process of the gradual loss of essence and its results. The logical connection among these three concepts can also be expressed as follows: alienation is a general concept; externalization and reification are subordinate concepts, both of which further explain the general concept of alienation from different perspectives or dimensions.
Labor is a special form of human movement. Labor has a broad and a narrow sense: labor in the broad sense refers to all human activities; labor in the narrow sense refers to the productive activities of material or spiritual goods, a type of productive activity that is a human activity capable of providing beneficial value and the sole means by which humans maintain their own survival and development. Labor is also divided into mental labor and physical labor: mental labor mainly refers to activities carried out by humans relying on intellect or spirit, while physical labor mainly refers to activities carried out by humans relying on muscles or bones. The division between mental labor and physical labor began when a distinction emerged between material production and spiritual production. Labor produces both the human self, the human society, and the human nature; it involves not only the relations between humans, between humans and society, and between humans and nature, but also the relation of humans to themselves.
Engels pointed out that labor is "the free activity of man." Alienated labor is necessarily labor from which the essence of human freedom has been stripped away, namely alienated labor or the alienation of labor, which is the core concept Marx used in his early critique of capitalist society. In the context of using the concepts of alienated labor or the alienation of labor, Marx also mentioned concepts such as reified labor, active externalization, externalization of activity, and externalized activity. In Marx's view, alienated labor has the following characteristics.
First, alienated labor is an activity that can cause labor itself to lose its essence. Labor includes such elements as the purpose of labor, the process of labor, and the result of labor: the purpose of labor refers to the intention or goal that the laboring subject establishes for the use of its own labor power; the process of labor refers to the course in which the laboring subject uses its labor power; the result of labor, also called the product of labor or the effect of labor, refers to the efficacy produced by the laboring subject in the course of using its labor power. Since alienated labor can cause labor to lose its essence, it necessarily causes the purpose of labor, the process of labor, and the result of labor to lose their essence. Labor whose essence is the free activity of man is necessarily labor whose purpose is to develop or fulfill the laboring subject itself, but alienated labor makes "the realization of labor appear as such a loss of realization that the worker is stripped of reality to the point of starving to death"; labor whose essence is the free activity of man is necessarily labor whose process is the delight of the body and mind of the laboring subject, but alienated labor makes the laboring subject's "body be tormented and his spirit devastated. Hence the worker feels at ease only outside labor, and feels ill at ease in labor; he feels at home when he is not working, and when he is working he does not feel at home"; labor whose essence is "the free activity of man" is necessarily labor whose result is the affirmation of the laboring subject itself through the labor of the laboring subject, but alienated labor is labor whose result is the negation of the laboring subject itself through the labor of the laboring subject, and such labor is necessarily not labor that makes the laboring subject "feel happy, but feel unhappy."
Second, alienated labor is an activity that can cause the laboring subject to lose its essence. Since the essence of labor is the free activity of man, the essence of man must also be fully manifested in "freedom." But alienated labor makes "the relation of man to his own labor product, to his objectified labor, be the relation to an alien, hostile, powerful object independent of him, and his relation to this object is such that another alien, hostile, powerful person independent of him is the master of this object." The reason the laboring subject deeply feels that its activity is an unfree activity in alienated labor is that it constantly feels that its activity is "an activity in the service of others, under the domination of others, under the compulsion and pressure of others."
Third, alienated labor is an activity that can cause the non-laboring subject, namely the one who lives without labor, to lose its essence. Man, as long as he exists as man, should fully manifest his essence in "freedom." But the non-laboring subject, namely the one who lives without labor, likewise loses the human essence of "freedom" in living without labor. The reason for this is that the one who lives without labor does not obtain what it seeks through labor whose essence is the free activity of man, but achieves its aims through plunder and seizure. "The alien being to whom labor and the product of labor belong, the being in whose service labor is done and for whose enjoyment the product of labor is made, can only be man himself." For this reason, Marx pointed out: "What appears in the worker as externalization and alienation appears in the non-worker as the state of externalization and alienation."
Fourth, alienated labor is an activity that causes all of man's relations to lose their essence. Man's relations include man's relation to himself, man's relation to others, man's relation to society, and man's relation to nature. The relations constructed by labor, whose essence is man's free activity, must necessarily be relations conforming to reason; however, alienated labor causes man's various relations to lose their essence, thereby giving rise to man's self-alienation. Marx divides man's self-alienation into four aspects: man's alienation from nature, man's alienation from his life activity, man's alienation from his species-essence, and man's alienation from man.
The direct result of alienated labor is the emergence of private property; in this regard, private property belongs to the phenomenological category of alienated labor, while alienated labor belongs to the essential category constituting private property. Marx also emphatically analyzes the forms of appearance of private property (wages, capital, profit, and ground rent, etc.) and its essence. He points out: "To pay labor itself with the product of labor, with the object of labor, is but the necessary consequence of the alienation of labor, for in wages labor does not appear as an end in itself, but as a servant of wages." Moreover, capital is necessarily also a result of alienated labor, because "in the worker there exists subjectively the fact that capital is man wholly lost to himself; likewise, in capital there exists objectively the fact that labor is man lost to himself. But the worker is unfortunate enough to be a living, and hence a poverty-stricken, capital, which loses its interest, and hence its conditions of existence, the moment it ceases to labor." "The worker exists as a worker only when he exists for himself as capital; and he exists as capital only when some capital exists for him. The existence of capital is his existence, his life; the existence of capital determines the content of his life in a manner indifferent to him." Profit and ground rent are "capital and interest in their monetary significance," and hence are necessarily also results of alienated labor, because "the distinction between capital and land, between profit and ground rent, and the distinction between these two and wages, between industry and agriculture, between private immovable and private movable property, remains a historical distinction, not one grounded in the nature of things"; that is, they are no different in their relation to alienated labor. To this end, Marx points out: "Private property is on the one hand the product of externalized labor, and on the other hand the means by which labor externalizes itself."
The development of private property necessarily gives rise to sharp contradictions and even opposition between the laboring subject and the non-laboring subject, and between wages and capital. Marx depicts this: "The more wealth the worker produces, the more powerful and greater in extent his product, the poorer he becomes. The more commodities the worker creates, the cheaper a commodity he becomes. The increase in the world of things is directly proportional to the depreciation of the world of men. Labor produces not only commodities; it produces itself and the worker as a commodity," and it also produces the capitalist. In this regard, for the laboring subject, appropriation necessarily appears as alienation, autonomous activity necessarily appears as activity on behalf of others or for others, life activity necessarily appears as the sacrifice of life, the production of objects necessarily appears as the loss of objects, and what is harvested necessarily appears as owned by alien forces or alien persons.
II. Class Domination: The Political Root of Proletarian Poverty
After the fundamental transformation of his worldview, Marx, grounded in historical materialism, reveals the political root of proletarian poverty through a deep analysis of the non-equilibrium structure between the ruling class and the ruled class.
Class domination refers to the process and result by which the ruling class wields or manipulates ruling power. The ruling class is the class that dominates materially and spiritually; it is "the material force that dominates society, and at the same time the spiritual force that dominates society." From a genetic standpoint, class domination and the ruling class emerge almost simultaneously. Ruling power refers to the most powerful means employed by the ruling class in realizing class domination, including economic power, political power, and cultural power. Power is an influence or manipulative force formed by a behavioral subject manifesting its own will in the behavior of others. Ruling power is domination established with power at its core. In this regard, without power, domination cannot be formed; with only power and no domination, power would become meaningless for lack of a "framework" in which to be placed. Power constitutes the confidence of domination, while domination constitutes the ambit of power. The reason power can occupy a core position in domination is that it possesses the following characteristics. First, scarcity. Power is an extremely scarce resource, because it is difficult to regenerate; although regeneration is theoretically possible, in practice it is very difficult, especially for a particular political organization or individual, for whom recovering lost power is very hard—the conditions for regeneration are harsh and the costs of regeneration are high, needless to say. Second, mystery. The operation of power in traditional class society is a process that can only continue within a black box or a gray box, and is therefore highly mysterious. In this context, operating power cannot be made public; once made public, it would alienate itself into something other. Third, concealment. Power is something very adept at hiding itself. As noted above, power only manifests itself in domination; that is, outside domination, it is concealed. The reason power conceals itself is that it cannot become something commensurable in its operation. Fourth, monopoly. The existence of power implies the existence of political monopoly; between power and monopoly, only through organic unity can each be well. Fifth, dominance. Power is something capable of dominating the will of others and even the whole. This is so because the existence of power itself manifests the existence of an advantage or a condition. Once power is grasped, one possesses the condition to manipulate others; therefore, the owner of power necessarily displays a superiority. Sixth, backlash. Power is something capable of turning back against the subject of power. Operating power has its laws. That is, power can only fulfill the subject of power when it operates according to its laws; conversely, if the operation of power exceeds the scope of its own laws, it will bring trouble or even disastrous consequences to the subject of power. Whether power appears in economic form, political form, cultural form, or other forms, it contains political significance. Wherever power appears, it becomes a battlefield of political struggle. In short, whatever is of power is necessarily political. In Marx's view, ruling power belongs to the category of the superstructure and therefore necessarily possesses the characteristic of being subordinate to the economic base. However, once ruling power exceeds the genetic category—that is, once ruling power is grasped by a certain class—it exerts a decisive influence on the ruling class, the ruled class, and their mutual relations. This influence can be corroborated from the following aspects.
First, continuously strengthening the ruling position of the ruling class. Clan society, because it had no ruling power, had no class rule; at that time “there were no soldiers, constables, and police, no nobles, kings, governors, prefects, and judges, no prisons, no lawsuits… all disputes and conflicts were settled by the whole body of the parties concerned, that is, by the clan or tribe, or by the various clans settling them mutually.” That is to say, there was no ruling power belonging exclusively to a minority. Only with the so-called “age of civilization” did ruling power make its appearance together with the emergence of “the exploitation of one class by another.” The appearance of ruling power was both a sign that the development of the productive forces had reached a certain level and a sign that the development of the productive forces was still not abundant enough. The limited character of the development of the productive forces determines this: whoever commands the productive forces possesses the capacity to dispose of the material means of production and the intellectual means of production; whoever can dispose of the material means of production and the intellectual means of production can wield in society the power of life and death, and this power can also be decomposed into the power of decision, the power of possession, the power of distribution, and so on. When a minority, by taking risks, engaging in underhand dealings, or resorting to open force, transforms the original public power into a private good, public power, having lost the essence of the “public,” is alienated into private power. The appearance of private power is both a typical sign of private ownership and a powerful protector of private ownership; it means both that ruling power makes its appearance in full pomp and that class rule makes its appearance in full pomp. The earliest class rule mainly included political rule, economic rule, and cultural rule. The core of political rule is political power; only by grasping political power can one carry out political rule, and only then can one make decisions in society on all kinds of social affairs (which are in fact all political affairs) and thereby enjoy absolute power of decision; only by enjoying absolute power of decision can one, while carrying out political rule, also carry out economic rule and cultural rule. Economic rule is mainly manifested in enjoying absolute power of possession and distribution over the material means of production, and cultural rule is mainly manifested in enjoying absolute power of possession and distribution over the intellectual means of production, and all of this finds appropriate expression in political rule. The above three types of class rule resonate at the same position and frequency within the same ruling process.
For the ruling class, the primary task after grasping ruling power is to preserve ruling power and thereby consolidate its ruling position. The ruling class will do everything in its power to consolidate its ruling position and thereby preserve ruling power, and its customary method is to gloss over its own private interests as universal public good and to disguise the private power in its hands as public power.
Second, continuously fixing the ruled position of the ruled class. The ruled class stands in opposition to the ruling class, and the two appear simultaneously. The reason the ruled class is in a ruled position is that it can neither occupy a dominant position in the production of the material means of production nor in that of the intellectual means of production and thereby enjoy absolute power of possession and distribution, still less can it make decisions in society on all kinds of social affairs, especially political affairs, and thereby enjoy absolute power of decision; in a word, the ruled class is far removed from ruling power. Its ruled position is concretely manifested as: political oppression, economic exploitation, cultural enslavement, and so on.
If the ruling class can only be composed of a minority in society, then the ruled class must necessarily be composed of the overwhelming majority in society; if the ruling class constitutes the upper stratum of society, then the ruled class can only constitute the middle and lower strata of society. In *The Class Struggles in France, 1848 to 1850*, Marx, after a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the various classes in French society, confirmed the above judgment. French society at that time was mainly composed of the aristocratic landlord class, the big bourgeoisie, the industrial bourgeoisie, the petty bourgeoisie, the peasant class, and the proletariat. The aristocratic landlord class was mainly composed of large landowners; although already in decline at the time, the privileges, interests, and honors it enjoyed still placed it at the very top of French society. The big bourgeoisie was mainly composed of the financial aristocracy, stock-exchange magnates, wealthy railway merchants, coal and iron mine owners, forest kings, and so on; it was the largest vested-interest group to emerge after the French bourgeois revolution of 1789 and occupied the upper stratum of French society. The industrial bourgeoisie was mainly composed of capitalists engaged in industrial production; in economic strength it was somewhat inferior to the big bourgeoisie and occupied the upper-middle stratum of French society. The petty bourgeoisie was mainly the democratic republican faction; its representative in the Executive Commission of the Provisional Government was Ledru-Rollin, in the Constituent National Assembly it was the Mountain, and in the press it was *La Réforme*. Although the petty bourgeoisie had once, in the “June Revolution,” joined with the big bourgeoisie and the industrial bourgeoisie in “attacking the proletariat,” it was still exploited by the aristocratic landlord class, the big bourgeoisie, and the industrial bourgeoisie, and occupied the middle or lower-middle stratum of French society. The peasant class, together with the petty bourgeoisie, constituted the majority of French society. The peasant class had rather complex characteristics: on one side clumsy and on the other cunning, on one side treacherous and on the other naive, on one side stupid and on the other shrewd. In this respect, the peasant class was a “hieroglyphic that the minds of civilized men find hard to understand,” and it too was exploited by the aristocratic landlord class, the big bourgeoisie, and the industrial bourgeoisie, constituting the lower-middle stratum of French society. The proletariat had no means of production at all and could only live by selling its labor power; its economic condition was the most distressed, its political position the most disadvantaged, and its social status the lowest. Thus it can be seen that the ruling class of France at that time could only be the minority represented by the aristocratic landlord class, the big bourgeoisie, and the industrial bourgeoisie, while the ruled class was the majority represented by the petty bourgeoisie, the peasant class, the proletariat, and so on.
Third, continuously strengthening the asymmetrical relational structure between the ruling class and the ruled class. From the above analysis it can be seen that, within the same class rule, between the ruling class and the ruled class there must necessarily form an asymmetrical relational structure: on one side is the ruling group constituted by the ruling class enjoying absolute ruling power, and on the other side is the ruled group constituted by the ruled class far removed from ruling power; the ruling group, relying on ruling power, can do as it pleases in society and act with arrogant condescension, while the ruled group, being far removed from ruling power, can only submit to adversity and swallow its anger in society; the members of the ruling group live in comfort and ease, well-fed and idle, while the members of the ruled group endure hardship and suffering, weathered by the storms of life. Although the ruling group, being a minority, may on account of some accidental upheaval fall into the ranks of the majority in the identity of the “lumpenproletariat,” or the ruled group, being a majority, may on account of some unforeseen circumstance rise to the rank of the minority in a conspicuous identity, none of this can fundamentally change the crucial influence that class rule, and especially ruling power, exerts in continuously strengthening the asymmetrical relational structure between the ruling class and the ruled class. In this context, the ruling class and the ruled class are always in a posture of opposition, constantly carrying on struggles of different forms, and the outcome of each struggle is either that the whole society is revolutionized, or that the contending parties perish together.
As the lowest group situated within this kind of asymmetrical structure, the proletariat can only struggle on the poverty line. The proletariat bears all the suffering of the development of capitalist society, yet cannot share in any of the joys that this development brings. Individual members of the proletariat may change their identity, but the proletariat as a whole cannot fundamentally transcend its social stratum within the existing class rule. The class rule of capitalist society necessarily requires the proletariat as such a collective existence, because the proletariat can produce not only itself, not only the bourgeoisie, but also the relations of production; in short, without the proletariat, the bourgeoisie as the ruling class would inevitably be unable to sustain itself.
The capitalist relations of production concentrate within themselves the “antagonistic mutual opposition” between labor and capital. Labor-power, as “living labor,” becomes the fundamental means and method for the valorization of capital, while capital, as already “accumulated labor,” becomes the principal instrument and medium for the expropriation of labor, that is, of living labor. This “antagonistic mutual opposition” is in turn concentrated in the capitalist process of production: “on the one hand, the capitalist mode of production manifests itself as the historical necessity of the transformation of the labor process into a social process; on the other hand, this social form of the labor process manifests itself as a method by which capital, through raising the productive power of the labor process, exploits the labor process more profitably.”
In this way, the class rule of capitalist society inevitably provides political guarantees for the accumulation of boundless wealth by the capitalists, and inevitably becomes the political root of the accumulation of boundless poverty by the proletariat.
III. Surplus Value: The Economic Root of Proletarian Poverty
In the course of profoundly criticizing and fundamentally overturning bourgeois political economy, that is, national economy, Marx established the political economy of the proletariat. In scientifically disclosing the secret of the existence of surplus value, he also exposed the economic root of proletarian poverty.
In order to scientifically disclose the secret of the existence of surplus value, Marx, as no one had done before, proceeded from the commodity, this “elementary form of wealth,” to focus on the process by which surplus value is produced.
A commodity is a product of labor produced for exchange, and in capitalist society the product of labor is of course the fruit of the labor of wage workers. This makes it necessary to examine labor. Labor is distinguished into concrete labor and abstract labor. Concrete labor refers to the “expenditure of human labor-power in a special form having a particular purpose,” that is, labor in its concrete form; abstract labor refers to the “expenditure of human labor-power in the physiological sense,” that is, general labor after the concrete form has been abstracted away. Concrete labor produces the use-value of the commodity, while abstract labor produces the value of the commodity. Use-value refers to the property by which a commodity can satisfy some need of the consumer, that is, “the usefulness of a thing… whatever the social form of wealth, use-values constitute the material [content] of wealth”; use-value constitutes the material content of wealth. Value refers to the “indifferent human labor” congealed in the commodity; value constitutes the general form of material wealth. That a product of labor can successfully become a commodity expresses both the organic unity between concrete labor and abstract labor and the organic unity between use-value and value. In capitalist society, if a product of labor cannot become a commodity, this means that a contradiction or even an opposition must necessarily arise between concrete labor and abstract labor, and between use-value and value. Commodities are distinguished into ordinary commodities and the special commodity: ordinary commodities are things that satisfy some need of the consumer through their own properties, while the special commodity is labor-power, which can produce a value greater than its own value. The special commodity not only possesses the properties of ordinary commodities, but also possesses a characteristic that ordinary commodities do not have, namely, the ability to produce a value greater than its own value.
Labor-power is “the aggregate of those mental and physical capabilities existing in a human being, which he exercises whenever he produces a use-value of any description.” Only when labor-power becomes a commodity can it become actual labor-power, and only when it becomes actual labor-power can it keep itself alive. The capitalist is the owner of the means of production and the means of subsistence. The owner of money can become a capitalist only by converting money into capital, and if he wishes to convert money into capital, he must find “free workers” on the commodity market. Here “free” has, in Marx’s view, a double meaning: “On the one hand, the worker is free, and able to dispose of his labor-power as his own commodity. On the other hand, he has no other commodity for sale, he is free of all the objects needed for the realisation of his labour-power.” Marx also points out: “Capital arises only when the owner of the means of production and subsistence meets the free worker on the market as the seller of his own labour-power.” As far as labor-power is concerned, workers have the freedom to refuse to sell it to a particular capitalist, but they do not have the freedom to refuse to sell it to all capitalists; they have the freedom to choose the time at which they sell it, but they do not have the freedom to choose not to sell it at any time. As far as the capitalist is concerned, he owns both the means of production and the means of subsistence, and therefore possesses far more freedom of choice than labor-power does.
Marx points out: “The owner of labour-power and the owner of money meet in the market, and enter into relations with each other as owners of commodities of equal status, the only difference being that one is the buyer and the other the seller, so that both are legally equal persons.” When selling labor-power, its owner can bargain with the owner of money as a subject, and when buying this special commodity of labor-power, the owner of money can likewise bargain with the owner of labor-power as a subject. Once the two parties reach agreement and complete the transaction, the owner of labor-power immediately enters the capitalist process of production to produce products of labor for the owner of money, and the owner of money pays wages to the owner of labor-power within a specified period of time.
Behind this seemingly equal phenomenon there in fact lies hidden an extremely unequal essence. Marx holds that in capitalist society what the owner of labor-power sells can only be labor-power, not labor; that the value of labor-power is determined by the labor-time necessary for the production and thus the reproduction of this specific article, and that the use of labor-power is limited only by the working capacity and physical strength of the worker; and that after purchasing labor-power, the owner of money will never, out of a stirring of conscience or moral consideration, require the worker to create only a value equivalent to the value of his own labor-power, but will require the worker to create the maximum value. From this there necessarily arises a portion of value exceeding the value of labor-power itself, namely surplus value, and the boundless pursuit of surplus value is the sole purpose of capitalist production. The capitalist process of production is a unity of the process of producing commodities, the process of producing surplus value, the process of absorbing surplus labor, and the process of producing capital. Marx points out: “He, who was previously the money-owner, now strides out in front as a capitalist; the possessor of labour-power follows as his worker. The one smirks and is intent, the other is timid and reluctant, like someone who has sold his own skin and is waiting to be tanned.” In this regard, the more surplus value the wage worker produces for the capitalist, the less value he himself appropriates.
Using surplus value as capital, that is, reconverting surplus value into capital, is capital accumulation. Marx points out: “Accumulation is the conquest of the world of social wealth. It extends the area of exploited human material, while at the same time extending the direct and indirect rule of the capitalist.” The capitalist must necessarily put a portion of surplus value back into the process of production as capital, and capital therefore has a tendency toward boundless expansion. This necessarily means that the capitalist process of production “reproduces the separation between labour-power and the conditions of labour… reproduces and perpetuates the conditions for exploiting the worker,” necessarily “forces the worker to sell his labour-power in order to live, while constantly enabling the capitalist to buy it in order to enrich himself,” and necessarily “throws the worker back on the commodity market again and again as the seller of his labour-power, and constantly converts the worker’s own product into the capitalist’s means of purchase.” That is to say, through capital accumulation the capitalist purchases more labor-power and means of production, and thereby can dispose of more labor-power and means of production to create more surplus value for himself. In the eyes of the capitalist, this process can be repeated cyclically and infinitely. On this basis, the capitalist can become ever richer, while the wage worker, however desperately he struggles, cannot change his fate of becoming ever poorer.
Marx also analyzed the process by which surplus value is divided up. The development of capitalism produced three forms of capital: industrial capital, commercial capital, and loan capital. Corresponding to these, three groups of capitalists emerged: the group of industrial capitalists, the group of commercial capitalists, and the group of loan capitalists. In addition, there also emerged large landowners. All of these groups are able to claim a share of surplus value and take this as the basis for their own survival and development.
First, the group of industrial capitalists receives industrial profit. For the group of industrial capitalists, surplus value must necessarily be transformed into profit; this is the precondition for expanded reproduction. Profit and surplus value have the same source; the fine distinction between them is that surplus value is defined with respect to variable capital, whereas profit is defined with respect to the total capital advanced. Thus, surplus value is the essence of profit, while profit is the transformed form of surplus value. Where there is profit, there is a rate of profit; the rate of profit is the ratio between surplus value and the total capital advanced. Because the rate of profit is always smaller than the rate of surplus value, it necessarily conceals the true source of surplus value. Competition among sectors and the free flow of capital tend to equalize the rates of profit across sectors, thereby forming a general rate of profit. Once the general rate of profit has been formed, the capitalists of each sector obtain an average profit commensurate with the magnitude of their capital according to the general rate of profit.
Second, the group of commercial capitalists receives commercial profit. Commercial capitalists necessarily involve commercial capital; commercial capital is a form of capital that is separated from the commodity-capital function of industrial capital and comes to function independently, and commercial capital is capital engaged in commercial operations. Marx points out: "It is only because commercial capital performs the function of realizing value that it functions as capital in the reproduction process, and hence, as functioning capital, takes its share of the surplus value produced by the total capital." At first glance, commercial profit appears to come from the difference between the selling price and the purchase price of commodities; in fact, this is only an illusion, because commercial profit by no means arises from a markup at the time of sale, that is, it does not arise from the sphere of circulation, but rather from part of the surplus value created by wage laborers in the production process. This part of surplus value is transferred by the industrial capitalist to the commercial capitalist, and the commercial capitalist, like the industrial capitalist, can obtain only the average profit.
Third, the group of loan capitalists receives interest. Loan capitalists necessarily involve loan capital; loan capital is that part of capital which is temporarily lent to functioning capitalists in the form of money capital in order to obtain interest. The group of loan capitalists participates in the division of surplus value through the lending of money. Where there is interest, there is a rate of interest; the rate of interest is the ratio between the amount of interest and the amount of loaned funds (principal) in a given period, and is also referred to simply as the "interest rate." The rate of interest is usually divided into three types: annual rate, monthly rate, and daily rate. The upper limit of the rate of interest cannot exceed the general rate of profit; given a certain general rate of profit, the rate of interest is regulated by the relation between supply and demand for loan capital. In capitalist society, the lending of money capital is carried out mainly through banks. Banks are enterprises that specialize in operating money capital and serve as intermediaries in lending relations. The purpose of bank capitalists in operating money-capital business is to obtain profit; bank profit is equal to the difference between interest on loans and interest on deposits. The ratio of bank profit to the bank's own capital invested by the banker constitutes the rate of profit on bank capital. Bank profit, like interest, originates from the surplus value created by wage laborers.
Fourth, large landowners receive ground rent. Ground rent is the economic realization of landed property. Capitalist ground rent is that part of surplus value which the agricultural capitalist pays to the landowner for the right to use the land and which is created by agricultural laborers over and above the average profit. Capitalist ground rent most concentratedly displays the fact that the agricultural capitalist and the large landowner jointly divide up the surplus value created by agricultural laborers. Capitalist ground rent takes two basic forms: differential rent and absolute rent. Equal areas of land of different quality necessarily give rise to differential rent; differential rent is the rent paid by the agricultural capitalist to the large landowner in capitalist agriculture, and is divided into differential rent I and differential rent II; the gradations in the quality of land are the condition for the formation of differential rent. The rent that the agricultural capitalist must pay regardless of what kind of land he rents constitutes absolute rent; absolute rent is the rent arising from the monopoly of private ownership of land.
Surplus value is that part of value which is created by wage laborers and appropriated by capitalists without compensation. Marx's scientific revelation of the secret of the existence of surplus value not only scientifically explains the economic root of the poverty of the proletariat, but also provides a powerful empirical foundation for further, in-depth explanation, from the perspective of economics, of alienated labor and class domination in capitalist society.
From the above analysis it can be seen that in capitalist society, alienated labor, class domination, and surplus value are respectively the social root, the political root, and the economic root of the poverty of the proletariat. And alienated labor, class domination, and surplus value in capitalist society are all based, at the institutional level, on the capitalist system. In this regard, the capitalist system is necessarily the general root of the poverty of the proletariat. This determines that if the proletariat is to achieve its own fundamental liberation, it must first of all fundamentally eliminate its own institutional poverty; if it is to fundamentally eliminate its own institutional poverty, it must first of all thoroughly "abolish bourgeois property" and on this basis establish its own property; if it is to thoroughly abolish bourgeois property and on this basis establish its own property, it must first of all raise itself to the position of ruling class and win democracy; once it has raised itself to the position of ruling class and won democracy, it must "step by step seize the whole of bourgeois capital, concentrate all instruments of production in the hands of the state, that is, of the proletariat organized as the ruling class, and increase the total mass of productive forces as rapidly as possible," and it must also "intervene forcibly in property rights and in bourgeois relations of production." Only in this way can the proletariat eliminate its own poverty on the basis of fundamentally eliminating the institutional injustice of capitalist society. Marx's analytical judgment that the poverty of the proletariat is a kind of institutional poverty provides the scientific theoretical foundation for Marx's establishment of the idea of the fundamental liberation of the proletariat and even of all humanity, and also provides the necessary theoretical guidance for us to comprehensively grasp and deeply understand Marx's idea of the fundamental liberation of the proletariat and even of all humanity.

- "Rabble" (贱民, Pöbel) is a term Hegel uses in his Philosophy of Right to describe a class that falls below the standard of living required for a member of civil society and loses the sense of honor derived from self-support.
- The quotations in [P8] and [P9] are from Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, specifically the section on "Estranged Labor."
- The quotation in [P10] is also from the "Estranged Labor" section of the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844.
- "Species-essence" (类本质) renders Marx's Gattungswesen, the human species-being as free, conscious activity, a concept central to the 1844 Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts from which the quotations in this article are drawn.
- "Framework" (座架) is a Heideggerian term (Gestell) used here metaphorically to denote the structural setting in which power can operate; the Chinese text borrows it to stress that power without domination lacks a locus of operation.
- "Black box or gray box" (黑箱或灰箱) refers to systems whose internal workings are opaque (black) or partially opaque (gray); the metaphor is used to describe the secrecy of power's operation in traditional class society.
- Ledru-Rollin (1807–1874) was a French lawyer and politician, a leader of the petty-bourgeois democratic republicans during the Revolution of 1848. The Mountain was the radical democratic faction in the French Constituent Assembly of 1848–1849, named after the radical grouping in the French Revolution. *La Réforme* was a French republican newspaper of the 1840s associated with the petty-bourgeois democrats.
- The “June Revolution” refers to the workers’ uprising in Paris from June 23 to 26, 1848, brutally suppressed by the bourgeois republican government; Marx analyzed it as the first great battle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie in France.
- The “lumpenproletariat” is Marx’s term for the déclassé, vagabond elements at the margins of society (thieves, beggars, swindlers, etc.), distinct from the industrial proletariat.
- “National economy” (Nationalökonomie) is the term Marx uses in his early writings, especially the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, for classical political economy as the theoretical expression of bourgeois society.
- The phrase “free workers” (freie Arbeiter) is Marx’s technical term in Capital for the doubly free laborer of capitalist society: free in the sense of being a legal person able to dispose of his own labor-power, and free in the sense of being dispossessed of all means of production and subsistence.
- The image of the worker as having “sold his own skin” and waiting “to be tanned” is Marx’s own simile in Capital, volume 1, chapter 4, emphasizing that the wage contract, though formally free and equal, delivers the worker into exploitation.
- The quotations in this paragraph are from the "Manifesto of the Communist Party" (1848) by Marx and Engels, specifically from Section II on the relation of communists to the proletarians.
