On the Oppositional Logic of Objectified Labour

Objectified labour is a core concept in the critique of political economy. It is highly correlated with the categories of objectivity (Gegenständlichkeit) in Hegel and Feuerbach, yet it is fundamentally different. Hegel’s dialectical logic is grounded in the abstract identity of the self and the object in motion and in its logical singularity: “The moments of spirit now expand in the form of that singularity which knows itself as its own object. These moments no longer split into the opposition of being and knowledge, but remain within the singularity of knowledge; they are truths possessing the form of truth, and their difference is merely a difference in content. The movement process through which they develop themselves into an organic whole within this element of knowledge is logic or speculative philosophy.” The movement process of the organic whole is a movement process that, after passing through the content of universality and particularity, expands from the form of singularity. Feuerbach pointed out that the objectification movement expanded from this form of singularity, as well as the essence of speculative philosophy, remains theology: “God, considered from his moral or spiritual attributes, that is, considered as a moral entity, is nothing other than the deified and objectified spiritual essence of man.” Marx inverted the premises and conditions of Hegel’s logic of the identity of self and object, liberated Feuerbach’s real entity-object from the cage of entity-activity, and elevated the critique of the objectified entity into a concrete “objective activity” (gegenständliche Tätigkeit) within a specific social formation — that is, a real critique of inverted “objectified labour.” Taking the oppositional logic of dialectics as the basis for reflection and critique, he created a critique of political economy consistent with philosophical logic.

In the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844*, Marx argued that objectivity cannot, as Hegel held, be equated with the non-objectivity of non-being. At this time, deeply influenced by Feuerbach, Marx held that a non-sensuous “non-objective being is a non-being (Unwesen),” and that “objectified labour” is an “alien, hostile power.” Object and non-object cannot achieve self-equivalence within the logic of singularity, because sensuous reality and real sensuousness stand on the ground; the active equation between man and nature or the object can only be realized through a thoroughgoing communist society. In *The Holy Family*, while critiquing the critique of criticism that had detached itself from the material earth, Marx clarified that the birthplace of history can only be material production on the earth: “Critical Criticism … makes the ‘mass,’ the ‘true birthplace of history,’ into the ‘mists’ of heaven, instead of the crude material production on the earth.” Material production, opposed to the mists of heaven, is the metabolic process between man and nature; this is labour: “Labour is, first of all, a process between man and nature, a process by which man, through his own actions, mediates, regulates and controls the metabolism between himself and nature. Man himself confronts the material of nature as a force of nature.” Man confronting natural material as a force of nature means that the external opposition of formless transformation within nature is the primordial opposition between the (earthly) natural conditions of production and the (heavenly, mist-enshrouded) entity conditions within a specific social formation. In capitalist society, the social metabolism, through the form-change of displacement and transposition, enables past, accumulated labour to invert and dominate present living labour, realizing the metabolism of capital. In *Capital* and the manuscripts, Marx continued the oppositional logic of objectified labour from the philosophical sense of the pre-historical-materialist period (especially the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844*), and through the theory of metabolism, further elevated it into the oppositional logic of objectified labour in the sense of the critique of political economy, excavating its progressive levels of external opposition, internal opposition, and essential opposition. Marx used objectified labour in its essential opposition to run through the philosophy of historical materialism and the critique of political economy, extracting the alchemy of the fetishism of capital, condensing the singular logic of capital’s valorisation, and critiquing the logic of valorisation’s negative sublation of abstract identity.

Therefore, in the author’s view, whether in terms of form, shape, or worldview and methodology, the critique of political economy represented by *Capital* always revolves around a single centre of gravity: objectified labour. On the one hand, objectified labour takes natural elements as the object of human activity; on the other hand, it transforms the living labour of man, who belongs to nature, into its own opposite, serving the abstract labour needs of humanity. Under the capitalist system, labour is objectified into a common entity; both nature and man are subordinated to a mysterious power behind them. In the disappearance and persistence of natural matter within the production process, the essential opposition and contradiction between objectified labour and objective activity are established. Marx pointed out that the contradiction Hegel posited as logically pre-established harmony is, in reality, a split and antagonistic contradiction — a universal and necessary inversion and split between idea and reality under the capitalist system. The “objectified labour” of the critique of political economy is a critique of the concretised practice of philosophy’s “objective activity” (gegenständliche Tätigkeit); it is the core concept of the methodology of the critique of political economy, linking a series of related categories such as the subject, entity, condition, relation, process, determination, and mediation of objectification. The contribution and advance of *Capital* and the manuscripts lie in grasping that the practical activity between man and nature is both sensuous objective activity and the metabolic activity of material exchange between man and the object as other, causing changes in both the content and form of man and nature. Capital determines the metabolism between man and the object as other, including the form-change of man as his own object. However, Marx pointed out that “people understand this form-change … very poorly.” In the author’s view, this is because the oppositional logic of dialectics is deeply hidden within it. Or, we cannot arbitrarily understand the bible of form-change — how capital’s abstract identity and absolute power are possible — apart from the centre of gravity of essential opposition, namely objectified labour. Therefore, the oppositional logic of objectified labour is the key to unlocking the secret of the metamorphosis of form and its form-change in social metabolism. Hence, this paper attempts to explore: how Marx, in analysing social metabolism, proceeds from the transposition movement of commodity and money, cuts into the external opposition in the changes of the external manifestation of the two sides of the opposition and the internal opposition of form-change, and advances both into a totality of essential opposition; and how Marx delves into the secret of objectified labour that can simultaneously exist as value, commodity, and capital, and unfolds a critique of the modern crisis caused by the fetish (fetish) exercising absolute power, i.e., capital. This is of great significance for unlocking the progressively layered dialectical logic within objectified labour and for exposing the important defect in Hegel’s speculative dialectics, namely the failure to distinguish between “objectification” and “alienation, externalisation, and externalisation.”

I. Social Metabolism: Internal Opposition within External Opposition

Material transformation is itself labor. If natural material transformation reveals the external manifestation of material transformation, then social material transformation reveals the inner essence within that external manifestation. The specific mission of material transformation can only occur within a particular social formation, namely capitalist society, which “makes exchange a regular social process.” “The exchange of commodities, in so far as it transfers commodities from the hands where they are non-use-values to the hands where they are use-values, is a social material transformation. … Here, however, we are interested only in the sphere of commodity exchange. Hence we consider the entire process only from the formal side, i.e., only the form transformation of commodities, or the metamorphosis of commodities, which mediates the social material transformation.” The mediation of social material transformation, i.e., the form transformation or metamorphosis of commodities, means that once a product of labor enters the sphere of exchange as a commodity, it establishes an inner opposition within the external opposition. “The exchange process creates a twofold division of the commodity into commodity and money, i.e., an external opposition in which the commodity expresses its immanent opposition between use-value and value.” The logic of opposition deeply embedded within this is the key to unlocking the secret of material transformation in the sphere of social exchange.

First, successive metamorphoses of form: commodity and money form an external opposition. Social material transformation is established in exchange activity. To gain a deeper understanding of this exchange activity, we may directly confront the laws of change of the opposing sides of social material transformation in the process of commodity exchange. In simple commodity exchange and circulation, the form transformation of value is realized through the external metamorphosis of the commodity. The first metamorphosis of the commodity is “commodity (C)—money (M),” and the second metamorphosis is “money (M)—commodity (C).” The process of commodity exchange, which starts from the commodity and returns to the commodity, cannot increase the content of the commodity in the course of its movement; it merely effects a successive material transformation between ordinary commodities and the money commodity. “This form transformation is poorly understood, apart from the lack of clarity about the concept of value itself, because each form transformation of a commodity is realized through the exchange of two commodities, i.e., one ordinary commodity and the money commodity.” The process of transposition and metamorphosis between the money commodity and the ordinary commodity consists of two “mutually opposed, complementary phases.” “In this external opposition, the commodity as use-value stands opposed to money as exchange-value.” At this stage of external opposition, commodity and money “cannot exist side by side in space; they can only occur successively in time,” indicating that the external metamorphosis of commodities can only interweave successively. Money is the means of circulation exchanged with all commodities, assuming the function of the universal equivalent. Since money is also a commodity, such opposition possesses the possibility of formal identity.

In the process of the conversion of money circulation into capital circulation, the order of commodity metamorphosis is reversed: the first metamorphosis is “money (M)—commodity (C).” When the personified commodity guardian, who has become the personification of the thing, takes possession of a large quantity of living commodities, the second metamorphosis is realized, i.e., “commodity (C)—money (M).” “Here, it is not the same piece of money that changes places twice, but the same commodity.” The quantity of money after the second metamorphosis is no longer the quantity of money in the first metamorphosis. Money changes from a two-time transposition to a one-time transposition; money must flow out and then flow back, otherwise this movement will cease. When ordinary commodities exit circulation, new commodities take their place, but money must constantly remain in the sphere of circulation in order to form a “golden chrysalis.” In this way, “this form transformation changes from a mere mediation of material transformation into an end in itself.” “Therefore, the content of the M—C—M process is not due to a qualitative difference between its two poles (both are money), but only to a quantitative difference. Finally, more money is withdrawn from circulation than was initially thrown into it.” Simple commodity circulation transforms the content of matter. Although there is the possibility of identity within the external opposition, this possibility cannot be realized in simple commodity circulation. This is because, in simple circulation, both poles of the external formal opposition claim to be truth, but truth can only be found in the most acute extremes; it cannot manifest as the truth of the totality itself. Only in circulation mediated by money and its material transformation can we directly confront the form within it: value.

Second, simultaneous form transformation: the inner opposition of use-value and exchange-value. In simple commodity circulation, money assumes the function of the universal equivalent, carrying out external changes in material content and form. But in circulation mediated by money, money is the general mode of existence or universal form of value, while the commodity is reduced to a particular mode of existence of value—this is a “disguised mode of existence,” i.e., through the transposition of the two sides of the exchange equation, realizing the one-sided form in “currency” (cours de la monnaie). The transposition in simple circulation and the transposition in money circulation are two different modes of transposition, and therefore need to be clarified. In the process of simple circulation, the commodity owner and the money owner can only occupy one position at a time; exchange-value must appear twice, “once as commodity, and once as capital. When it has one determination, it does not have the other.” However, with the input of labor power into the reproduction process to form productive capital, the determinations of the two opposites can be preserved simultaneously. At this point, value is “the same exchange-value, exchange-value as subject,” which, in the movement of being posited and mediated, can “simultaneously” possess both forms, “i.e., preserving itself in the commodity as money, and in money as commodity.” This is no longer the simple production process shaping the external form of the commodity and having a simple external opposition with money; rather, it is a material transformation starting from money, where money is the mediator and preacher of value’s constant self-externalization and self-return. The condition for this is that the use-value of living labor must first realize its own exchange-value, which reverses the process of value exchange in which the commodity, presupposing use-value, enters the sphere of exchange and circulation in order to realize exchange-value as a past fact.

In the circulation of money, the natural integument of the commodity is transformed into a golden integument, taking on the responsibility of continuous motion. “This motion contains two opposed processes for the commodity, but as the motion of money itself it always contains the same process, namely, that money changes places with one commodity after another.” The powerful function of (ex)change of (po)sition in the motion of money causes money to appear as the driving force of the exchange process, and simultaneously to possess two forms of value. The active sign of equality, because it completes the change of position, necessarily possesses an inner identity; and because of the change of position of this inner identity, the inversion function that was hidden in money from the very beginning is revealed. “Inversion is the foundation of the capitalist mode of production, and not merely of the mode of distribution corresponding to it.” The motion of money was originally the “expression” of commodity circulation, but now it has become the “result.” That money is the result, i.e., the result of the transformation of form, means that use-value is displaced, inverted, obscured, and replaced by exchange-value. It can be seen that only through the inversion of the supersensible world can value “simultaneously” possess the two forms of use-value and exchange-value, altering and elevating the logical level of the opposition of external forms, which can only succeed one another. “In the social form we are to examine, use-value is simultaneously the material bearer of exchange-value.” The opposition of the external forms of commodity and money is founded on the opposition of the inner forms of value itself; the former is merely the external manifestation of the latter, while the latter is the inner essential form of the former. If the change of form still has time flowing through it, then the transformation of form can only be a “simultaneous” and “identical” static, timeless motion. On this basis, we can analyse that the labour of material metabolism is “simultaneously” natural and human, and therefore possesses a dual character. Only in the “simultaneous” can the left and right sides of the active sign of equality in equivalent exchange achieve a successful change of position and transformation of form through mutual lack. Under the impetus of the identical force behind the inner transformation of form, the two opposing sides achieve a temporary mutual unity through mutual transformation, successfully fulfilling the mission of quantitative difference inverting qualitative difference. As the true motive force of society, “the process in which labour becomes reality is simultaneously the process in which labour loses reality.” The secret of the change of position at the two ends of the sign of equality in the motion of the money-commodity, which transforms form while shaping form, lies in simultaneity and identity. In the material metabolism of society, anthropomorphism is replaced by theomorphism of the object; money, as the preacher of the new god, replaces the preacher of the old god of traditional religion. The new god is capital, and the new religion it constructs is fetishism. The result of social material metabolism “always appears in the highest power as exchange-value” and “strives to attain the same formlessness.” Formlessness represents the eternally enduring substance crystallised in the transitoriness of matter; this is the labour of social material metabolism externalised and objectified into the common value entity of the whole society, i.e., undifferentiated human labour time. The totality of circulation causes “the material metabolism of social labour” to be “completed in the change of form of commodities,” breaking through individual and local material metabolism, and “developing the material metabolism of human labour.”

Third, the opposition of essence: sublating the change of external form “simultaneously” sublates the inner transformation of form. Through the motions of “dipping in sugar” and “gilding,” natural matter becomes commodity matter, and simultaneously living labour becomes objectified labour, because the inversion and change-of-position motion of social material metabolism causes man to be a force of nature while also being a social force. More extensive than the opposition of the inner forms of the commodity is the overall opposition of human society. Only that which can form an overall opposition is the opposition of essence: “The determination of the opposition of essence is a difference of an essence at its highest stage of development.” The opposition of essence at the highest stage of development embodies the totality, preventing the two poles of the opposition from “craving a decisive battle,” and discarding any direct mediation through which they might mutually transform. On the basis of the dissolution of the two opposing sides, “there is no true duality of essence.” The opposition of essence is a unitary opposition; after all, “the determination of the contrast of essence determines itself as reality in this identity of appearance and interior or essence.” This is to say that social material metabolism unifies the objectifying motion from the inside out and from the outside in, thus “simultaneously” sublating the external opposition and the inner opposition. Marx, through the process of reproduction, extended the simultaneity and identity in the circulation of money into the simultaneity and identity of the circulation of capital as a totality. The time of the objectifying motion becomes the common entity of the totality of the whole society, and the objectifying motion is thus transformed into the objectified labour of a static identity, a timeless motion that simultaneously rules the past, present, and future. Objectified labour is the material metabolism with social historicity; under specific social forms and historical conditions, i.e., under the conditions of the capitalist ethical entity, material metabolism is objectified labour.

After simple commodity circulation enters the circulation of money, the relation between commodity and money is sublated into the relation between money and labour: “In money (exchange-value), the objectification of the individual is not the objectification of the individual in his natural determination, but the objectification of the individual in a social determination (relation).” Through the mediation of the circulation of money, simple commodity circulation is elevated into the circulation of capital. “The circulation of capital is the change of form that value undergoes through different stages.” Money, through the advance of value, makes itself into the transient mediation of the circulation of capital, so that “the material metabolism between simultaneously existing labour powers” is sublated into “the material metabolism of capital” which “creates the simultaneous existence of the various branches of labour.” In the circulation of capital, “the transformation of form and the material metabolism occur simultaneously.” This means that the specific function of objectified labour lies in simultaneously objectifying the other and objectifying itself, causing dead, material machinery to operate like a perpetual motion machine, causing the whole society to simultaneously enter an independent kingdom, realising the abstract identity of self-inversion, and silently perpetually stealing. Thus the common value entity still carries out the mission of inversion, revealing the secret of the change of form and transformation of form in social material metabolism: the opposition between capital and labour.

At this point, we may perhaps have some dialectical reflections on the problem of the understanding of the transformation of form that Marx posed at the beginning. But what force can simultaneously sublate both sides of the opposition, forming the overall opposition of essence? Driven by the desire for the multiplication of capital, the use-value of labour becomes the worker’s “definite productive activity”; this is objectified labour, “i.e., labour existing in space, which can also oppose labour existing in time as past labour.” Past labour is labour that can oppose all labour existing in time in essence. This is a key to unlocking the modern problems of capitalism. On the one hand, objectified labour explains how labour opposes its own past self; on the other hand, it abstracts the time that extends through labour into an abstract entity that can exist independently of external time and space, thereby explaining the reason for the self-sublation of the opposition of essence into the inner opposition, and of the inner opposition into the external opposition. Objectified labour causes everything in commodity society to disappear while simultaneously reviving; through theomorphism of the object replacing anthropomorphism, it harbours the potential for infinite multiplication, establishing the abstract identical fetish of the object. Under the planning of the omnipotent fetish of the object, i.e., capital, Marx reveals the roots of modern problems such as the organic being simultaneously the inorganic, surplus simultaneously scarcity, abundance simultaneously insufficiency, and wealth simultaneously poverty in the world of commodities and capital. As the opposition of essence, objectified labour not only grasps the identity behind it, but also, in the preaching motion of mediation, expands the singular logic of capital, spreading this active and self-sublating identity to every corner of society. “For the worker, machinery and raw materials are not use-values, not commodities, but the objective conditions of a process, while the worker himself is the subjective condition of this process.”

II. Value, Commodity, and Capital Are Objectified Labour

Just as essence is past existence, capital is accumulated labour. But past objectivity alone is insufficient to unlock the full secret of the movement of objectification. What we must first confront is precisely that which has been objectified in the past. Past, accumulated labour is not a purely material thing or an element of the purely labour process; it is an “independent force” capable of confronting the living labour of actual workers, a “material condition” that can immediately manifest as “a definite social relation,” and something that can simultaneously exist as value, as a commodity, and as capital, thereby becoming total objectified labour. Total objectified labour reveals why the objectified entity that disappears into matter in simple production and simple commodity circulation is resurrected in the process of reproduction and capital circulation. In the process of reproduction and circulation, objectified labour that vanished in the past and is revived in the present develops the totality of the antagonism latent within itself through the simultaneity and identity of living labour. The illusory result of the change of form in the social metabolism is that exchange value, in the guise of the identity of thing and person, conceals use value. In the metabolism of capital, as pre-existing value, it causes its own immediate reality to disappear. For value as substance is objectified labour.

(I) Value as Objectified Labour

First, pre-existing value can only re-enter the total circulation process continuously by first losing itself. “The change of form of the commodity shows that it makes no difference in which use-value it exists. Hence it is only when the means of production lose their independent use-value and thereby also their exchange-value in the labour process that value is transferred from the means of production to the product.” Because “the reproduction process of capital also includes circulation,” the loss of the immediate reality of value occurs “when capital passes from the money form into the commodity form, i.e., into the form of a product with a definite price to be realised.” The price to be realised is value possessing only ideal objectivity, and also labour time objectified in the past; hence it must first lose itself before it can, through a perilous leap in reality, throw itself into the purposeful torrent of capital circulation. “The valorisation process of capital is at the same time the devalorisation process of capital.” On the one hand, this means that value “does not arise from circulation, but is realised in it”; on the other hand, it means that the circulation of money lays the inverted premise for the circulation of production. The completion of one cycle of reproduction circulation signifies the realisation of one self-return movement of capital; the time this process requires is the circulation time that stands alongside labour time. The task of realising past value and its specific purpose cannot be accomplished by past labour time alone. Because of the essential antagonism within objectified labour, this return movement necessarily requires that the advanced value be valorised in the process of its real movement. Conversely, every extension of circulation time means a reduction in the number of reproduction cycles and a loss of the advanced value. Pre-existing value is past objectified labour time, which determines the quantity of objectified labour. Therefore, how much value (new value created by present living labour) accumulated labour can add through exchange activities in circulation, in the process of losing past value, depends on the length of the circulation time and cycle time of the outward movement of the objectified value substance that congeals and the inward movement of value growth that recovers.

Second, objectified labour is the cause of the self-antagonism of money and value. This arises from a total movement that possesses both overarching character and simultaneity. Through this total process of capital circulation, the mediating and proselytising role of money and value disappears within itself. The process of value losing itself means that money is no longer the universal equivalent in simple circulation; “this process is directly opposed to exchange; it is essentially a different category.” A different category means that money, which constantly lingers in circulation as universal equivalent and means of circulation, is fixed as the common substance of an independent kingdom that gathers like clouds and disperses like mist, and, under the action of a transposition and inversion movement that “stands on its head in relation to all other commodities,” is sublated into a new category that constantly exceeds the boundary of its own value magnitude. This new category breaks through the temporal and spatial finitude of value itself and becomes an infinite fetish. When the value substance becomes an “automatic subject,” money sublates itself into capital, “money which begets money.” Capital is the boundless desire to transgress boundaries. Although money has undergone the exchange activities and exchange value of social metabolism, in the self-expanding metabolism of capital it is a movement of quantitative self-growth that has abolished quality. Money and its circulation are no longer merely the simple intermediary of exchange, but “necessarily appear as an essential and necessary form of existence of the commodity as exchange value, i.e., as general social labour.”

Finally, value is objectified labour. The quantity of labour objectified as value forms the essential antagonism between value and value, and is therefore the value substance opposed to natural matter. This substance can posit a continuous movement, reviving in disappearance and valorising in sublation. “The value substance is by no means a particular natural substance, but objectified labour”; in the reproduction process, the past and present objectified labour time that has been appropriated is such that “value is nothing but objectified labour.” Because money has sublated its function as universal equivalent, it necessarily stands opposed to exchange and is independent as the one substance of all identity, “i.e., the form of existence of all commodities.” This is capital, which in the total process can simultaneously exist in the form of “any commodity whatsoever.” Under specific historical conditions, exchange is also non-exchange; when money can exist in the form of any commodity in non-exchange, it sublates itself into capital as power.

(II) The Commodity as Objectified Labour

That value becomes objectified labour manifests only as the potential and ideal objectivity of objectified labour. Only when real living labour also becomes objectified labour, becomes value posited as use value for others, can the various commodities objectified as independent entities, under the action of identity, move to the next link of the total movement, pointing toward the self-realisation process of that entity which constantly and automatically increases in reality. “It is only in the process which is simultaneously reproduction and circulation” that “the realisation of surplus value” can “be revealed.” The renewal of capitalist production, i.e., reproduction, “is at the same time the production of definite formal conditions, the production of definite modes of behaviour in which personified objectified labour expresses itself.” Personified objectified labour necessarily contains the essential antagonism that sublates both external and internal opposition. By exchanging with the equivalent in the money form, the commodity of labour-power also becomes objectified labour. In this way, the advanced value existing in the money form, with living labour as its vehicle, throws itself into the objectified labour that becomes the total metabolism. Only when living labour-power becomes a commodity can a specific process enter into the reproduction process, thereby realising its own real purpose.

First, living labour must engage in a “surface exchange” with objectified labour because of its specific quality. The foundation of capitalist production development and capital circulation lies in the specific quality peculiar to the commodity of labour-power itself. This commodity differs from other commodities, possessing a quality or use-value that other commodities do not have, namely, the commodity of labour-power. On the premise that the value of the commodity has been advanced, the exchange-value of living labour, because it can create new exchange-value, becomes the element and subjective condition of capital’s movement. When money purchases the various factors of production for reproduction, it must purchase the commodity of labour-power, because the specific use-value of this commodity lies in its ability to create an exchange-value greater than the exchange-value of the commodity of labour-power itself. “The exchange-value of labour that is realised in the exchange with the capitalist is pre-existing, predetermined; it undergoes only the formal change that any price existing merely in idea undergoes when it is realised.” [6]6 Karl Marx, *Grundrisse der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie* (Berlin: Dietz Verlag, 1953), p. 358. [Translator’s note: All Marx citations are translated from the Chinese text’s references; the English rendering follows the sense of the Chinese author’s usage.] Therefore, labour-power does not exchange for an equivalent; “from the perspective of capital, the exchange must be merely a surface exchange, that is, it must belong to a different form of economic determination than the formal determination of exchange; otherwise, capital could not exist as capital, and labour could not exist as labour opposed to capital.” [7]7 Ibid., p. 359. A surface exchange is a non-exchange, forming the opposition of labour itself under specific labour conditions. “The foundation of capitalist production development, generally speaking, is the opposition between labour-power, a commodity belonging to the worker, and labour conditions, commodities fixed in the form of capital and existing independently of the worker.” [8]8 Ibid., p. 360. This necessarily manifests as another economic determination different from the formal determination of exchange, namely, the power determination of past and personified objectified labour appropriating living labour without compensation.

Second, living labour and objectified labour form an essential opposition of totality. Objectified labour dominates all elements of living labour, including materials, means, objects, relations, conditions, etc. “All these elements are reduced to objectified labour.” [9]9 Ibid., p. 362. They dominate living labour itself with capital as the condition of production. “Capital appears as the new domination of objectified labour over living labour.” [10]10 Ibid., p. 363. The material transformation of totality, i.e., the material transformation of capital, achieves the essential opposition between objectified labour and living labour through objectified labour time that can transcend present living labour time. The essential opposition of totality between objectified labour and living labour is simultaneously the opposition between capital and labour. Because “living labour time reproduces only that part of objectified labour time (capital)” [11]11 Ibid., p. 365. which is the equivalent (wages) of the power to dominate living labour itself, this part compensates for the labour time and production costs objectified in labour-power, but at the same time conceals the newly objectified labour time and newly created value. This newly objectified labour time is surplus labour time, and the newly created value is surplus value. “Living labour, when adding a new quantity of labour, exists as living labour and stands in an intrinsic relation determined by the production process with the labour materials and labour instruments,” [12]12 Ibid., p. 367. forming an essentially antagonistic social relation and social contradiction determined by the socialised production process. This essentially antagonistic social contradiction is antagonistic, not the pre-established harmony that Hegel posited.

Finally, the commodity (labour-power) is itself objectified labour. “Capital … is not the substance as the material material of the commodity, and thus as the determination of the thing, but the common substance as the commodity, and thus as exchange-value — lies in the fact that the commodity is objectified labour.” [13]13 Ibid., p. 370. The author believes that the distinction between the commodity becoming objectified labour and value becoming objectified labour is this: the latter is direct; once it enters the production process, it necessarily condenses into the abstract common substance of quantity; but the former bears the heavy responsibility of realising ideal value, because simultaneously existing capitals are restricted and influenced by the universal circulation time of the entire world. That is to say, whether and to what extent a commodity can realise the quantity of labour that has already existed in the production process and been objectified into the common substance, i.e., the “pre-existing exchange-value,” depends on the restriction of circulation time in reality and the length of time for the movement of return to money. But this is a matter of contingency in the circulation cycles of simultaneously existing capitals. “The simultaneous existence of different cycles of capital, like the simultaneous existence of different determinations of capital, only becomes clear when many capitals are presupposed.” [14]14 Ibid., p. 372. Capital as the commodity (labour-power) shares the same fate as commodities; whether the leap can be achieved is a matter of contingency. Just as the life processes and age stages that everyone must undergo can generally coexist in totality, but for each individual, these processes and stages are full of contingency. “Now capital as a commodity itself shares the same fate as commodities: whether it can be exchanged for money, whether its price can be realised, are contingent matters.” [15]15 Ibid., p. 374. The abstract continuous identity that necessarily occurs logically and ideally, once it cannot achieve the perilous leap in the actual circulation process where buying and selling are separated and full of contingency, will lead to circulation stagnation and bring about a universal “modern crisis,” because the question of “whether the valorisation achieved by capital in the production process is the actual valorisation of capital” [16]16 Ibid., p. 375. cannot be resolved by ideas.

(III) Capital as Objectified Labour

For capital to become actual rather than ideal objectified labour, it must first complete its in-itself and non-positedness in the production process, second complete its for-itself and positedness in the circulation process, and finally, in the unity of the two, complete its in-and-for-itself and world-market character. “The total production process of capital includes both the circulation process in the proper sense and the production process in the proper sense … it appears as the totality of these two processes. … It appears as the unity of labour time and circulation time, as the unity of production and circulation. This unity is movement, is process.” [17]17 Ibid., p. 378. Only when capital becomes objectified labour can we grasp, within capital as a total process, its antagonistic logic of resurrection after death yet necessarily heading towards destruction.

First, the essence of capital is the inversion and transposition of force against force. Capital, through the self-sublation of living labour, valorises value that has already been realised. The valorisation of value must undergo the inversion and transposition of objectified labour over living labour in the reproduction process before it can re-enter circulation for re-exchange with labour and commodities, continuously carrying out the inverting activity of social inversion and transposition through material re-exchange and re-transformation. The inversion and transposition of all productive “forces” of capital with the productive “forces” of labour proves that “capital itself is in essence this inversion, this transposition.” [18]18 Ibid., p. 380. At this point, the realised, past value is no longer merely simple value; “it is the ceaseless movement of creating more surplus value. The quantitative limit of surplus value is for capital merely a natural barrier that it constantly strives to overcome and transcend as a necessity.” [19]19 Ibid., p. 382. Past value can only realise more value in resurrection after death through the force of “accumulated labour”; “this life-restoring natural force of labour … becomes the force of capital, not the force of labour.” [20]20 Ibid., p. 384. Value turns into non-value, exchange into non-exchange, time into non-time — this is the supreme power of the capital fetish, and it necessarily executes the function of theft. Through inversion and transposition, capital achieves the dual sublation of past accumulated labour and present living labour, so that capital movement has no limits, constantly breaking through the boundaries of reality and ideas, possessing the capacity of the necessity to constantly transcend natural limits. This self-transcending necessity in turn sublates the contingency in the circulation process, making absolute contingency into necessity. But this life-restoring force achieved through self-transposition and self-sublation remains ideal.

Secondly, purely conceptual capital becomes the ground of “entering into relation with itself.” Money “produces itself while, as ground, it enters into relation with itself as that which is grounded by it, as a value existing in advance enters into relation with itself as surplus value.” Money is the form of the essential antithesis of the commodity of labour-power; in the process of metamorphosis, it becomes a form independent of the commodity’s initial shape. However, only through the sublation of the directly actual form of money can capital turn money into something “purely conceptual” — something posited by itself rather than posited, and at the same time sublated by its own self-objectifying movement rather than by the objectifying movement of something else. Purely conceptual money, while positing itself, also creates the myth of self-sublation, transforming circulation into a circulation without temporal movement; in completing the quantitative determination of the objectivity of value, it also completes the qualitative determination within the idea: “the different phases that capital goes through in circulation are equally the qualitative determinations of the metamorphosis of capital’s own form.” When the production process and the circulation process are united as one in the total movement of capital, the necessary phases of capital’s metamorphosis — the circuits of money-capital, productive capital, and commodity-capital — prove that it has already exceeded “the scope of the isolated circuit of a single individual capital” and become the circulation and circuit of capital that is both concretely individual and conceptually total. Things that are essentially antithetical become mutually transparent and self-developing within the universality, particularity, and individuality manifested in capital’s material metamorphosis. Capital, as something capable of bearing fruit, not only possesses the value of self-reproduction and self-perpetuation but can simultaneously realise the value it has posited; the qualitative determination of purely conceptual exchange-value is precisely capital, and only capital can be the ground of entering into relation with itself, establishing the most abstract and general relations of alienation and inversion in the whole of society: “individual labour must necessarily present itself as abstract general, social labour only through its own transfer (alienation).” Through the ceaseless inversion and transposition of the supersensible world, capital turns the objectified thing itself into the subject, completing the process of establishing the identity of thing and man: “hence capital is necessarily at the same time the capitalist.”

Finally, capital is objectified labour. Only capital existing for itself — i.e., the capitalist — participating in the total process of reproduction can subsume capital existing in itself — i.e., the advanced value — so that the movement of capital manifests itself as a totality in and for itself, becoming a force that posits itself as condition, process, and relation. At this point, objectified labour is no longer the various commodity forms but rather surplus labour within the formal metamorphosis of capital’s circulation: “objectified labour (the advanced value), necessary labour (the value of wages), and surplus labour; after passing through circulation, it yields profit because the surplus labour contained in the product is realised together with the product.” This is a total, abstract common entity, indifferent to any particularity yet necessarily related to it. “Because capital itself is indifferent to any particularity of its own substance, and is at once the totality of all these particularities and the abstraction from all of them, labour confronting capital also contains in itself, on the subjective side, the same totality and abstraction.” What is easily confused is that “the value being exchanged is always objectified labour-time … value itself is always the result, not the cause.” Hence capital, grounded in itself, is the cause of the value advanced as reproduction costs; it keeps value alive by positing itself, constantly absorbing the air of living labour: “capital constantly leaves itself as objectified labour in order to absorb living labour-power, the air it needs for its survival.” The objectified labour of value is the most direct, most abstract, and most universal; it passes through the objectified labour of the commodity in reality, uniting universality and particularity, and in the movement of metamorphosis becomes the objectified labour of capital as a concrete totality of essential antithesis and contradictory identity.

“Nothing can emerge at the end of the process that did not appear as its premise and condition at the beginning.” Capital as objectified labour is the collective force of conditions, processes, and relations. Under specific historical conditions of capitalism, the private ownership of the means of production causes “past objectified labour to be the condition of his labour” — that is, the material condition of the worker’s labour. The labour that makes things increase in value — objectified labour — is the “yeast” of capital; while causing capital to “ferment,” it also processes the objectivity in which capital exists and sublates its subjectivity. Capital as the ruling force or power of the whole of society is the independent force hidden behind the metamorphosis of material forms and the transformation of forms: in the total circulation process of the circuits of productive capital, money-capital, and commodity-capital, the sacred “simultaneity” of material metamorphosis realises a trinitarian reified world: “in the trinity formula, the mystification of the capitalist mode of production, the reification of social relations, the direct fusion of material production relations with their historical and social determination, is completed: this is an enchanted, inverted, topsy-turvy world.” The singularity of Hegelian speculative philosophy and the singularity of capital’s valorisation are so congruent that, through the material metamorphosis of capital, Marx’s specific social form, in its essential antithesis, establishes the identity of value with value, the identity of force with force, and the identity of surplus with surplus, turning difference and concrete actuality into a dead objectivity without difference and without form. “The particular skill of labour becomes ever more something abstract, indifferent.” This elevates the formally abstractly identical objectified labour into the reified labour of the total fetishism of capital. But we must not drown in the purely conceptual gravity of capital; only living labour and its material bearer, the worker, are the true cause and ground.

III. The Positive Sublation of Objectified Labour: The Natural Conditions of Objective Activity

Capital, in the manner of universality, particularity, and individuality becoming mutually transparent and mutually identical, infuses itself into the concrete soul of every atomic individual in capitalist society; it sheds its rigid material shell and haunts every corner of the human world like a spectre, gaining conceptual immortality in the concrete total movement. With the development of the productive forces, objectified labour and living labour necessarily increase, but in the inverted logic this “is in fact a tautological proposition,” because “capital is the collective force, is civilisation.” While surpassing past civilisations, capital is also full of crises.

First, the objectified labour of capital leads to an infinite world history and to modern crises. In conception, the capitalist reproduction process appears as a complete chain, but in reality it is always accompanied by interruptions in the change of form. The first condition of capitalist production is that the product must become a commodity, “must be expressed as money and must complete the process of change of form”; yet even in the simple change of form of the commodity, crisis has already been revealed. The completion of money in the total production process is also the completion of the change of form of capital. Surplus value is the goal pursued by the movement of capital; it does not depend on a single or simple act of value production, but on the number of reproductions within a specific period of time. This is a movement beyond simple production, and surplus value is no longer the direct relation of opposition between the objectified labour of capital and living labour and its product, but rather an element of the contradictory movement of the essential opposition of the totality: “this relation is expressed only as an element of the total movement of capital.” [23]23 Karl Marx, *Grundrisse*, Notebook IV, “Chapter on Capital (continuation).” See *Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe* (MEGA²) II/1.2, p. 500; English translation in *Grundrisse*, trans. Martin Nicolaus (Penguin, 1973), p. 519. “Production and each of its elements are posited as a totality, but at the same time all contradictions are unfolded. Hence the world market again constitutes the presupposition and the bearer of the whole.” In pure conception, capital is its own cause and ground and drives the unfolding of all contradictions: “as cause, as activity, the worker is absorbed by capital and embodied as capital.” But in reality, the worker is the ground and the cause. The world market is the hotbed on which capital realises itself, yet it gives rise to “the most complex phenomenon of capitalism — the world market crisis.” [24]24 The phrase “the most complex phenomenon of capitalism — the world market crisis” is a paraphrase of Marx’s discussion in *Theories of Surplus-Value*, where he refers to the world market crisis as the most complex phenomenon of capitalist production. See *Theories of Surplus-Value*, Part 2, Chapter 17. Once the change of form of the commodity in the production process and the change of form of capital in the circulation process cannot smoothly transform into each other but stagnate in mutual separation and independence, a world-historical modern crisis erupts.

Second, the original opposition between the natural conditions of “objective activity” and the substantive conditions of “objectified labour.” The material metabolism of society occurs in the labour process and is realised in the circulation process; the material metabolism of capital fuses immediacy and mediation, production and consumption into one. Yet we cannot ignore the material metabolism of nature itself. Only by standing on the material metabolism of the round earth can the totality of human social forms and their social relations be determined, and at the same time the non-objectifying objectification process of natural use-value and subjective productive labour be determined. Conversely, “the form of personal independence founded on objective dependence … forms the system of general social metabolism, of universal relations, of all-round needs and universal capacities.” [25]25 Marx, *Grundrisse*, Notebook I, “Chapter on Money.” MEGA² II/1.1, p. 91; Nicolaus trans., p. 158. This reveals the historical science within material metabolism. Nature and society are themselves non-objectified, which means that the opposition between the natural conditions of “objective activity” and the substantive conditions of “objectified labour” is an original opposition within differential reality. Objectified labour turns nature and society into substance; the personification of capital is the fundamental purpose of the material metabolism of nature and society. But under the production conditions determined by the modern ethical substance of capitalism, first nature submits to second nature, causing both natures to lose the vital force of the organism. Objectified labour is merely a process of precision and rationalisation of things into a purposeless purposiveness; nature is transformed into a substantive external world opposed to itself, making itself not only “the inorganic body of man” but also making man’s organic body into “inorganic nature.” [26]26 The phrase “the inorganic body of man” is from Marx’s *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844* (MEGA² I/2, p. 272); “inorganic nature” is a related concept from the same work, referring to nature as man’s inorganic body. Only through de-substantialisation can the empire of the fetish be broken through, and the object-nature and life that cannot be objectified be grasped. Through the original opposition of the production conditions of essential difference, Marx further points out: “capitalist production … disturbs the metabolic interaction between man and the earth … i.e., it prevents the return to the soil of its constituent elements consumed by man in the form of food and clothing; hence it hinders the operation of the eternal natural condition for the lasting fertility of the soil … Moreover, all progress in capitalist agriculture is a progress in the art, not only of robbing the worker, but of robbing the soil … it destroys the original sources of all wealth — the soil and the worker.” [27]27 Marx, *Capital*, Vol. 1, Chapter 15, Section 10. MEGA² II/5, p. 407; English translation in *Capital*, Vol. 1, trans. Ben Fowkes (Penguin, 1976), pp. 637–38. The passage is slightly adapted in the original Chinese text. This is the essential difference between the “spontaneous” material metabolism of man and nature (the land) in pre-capitalist society and the “forced” material metabolism brought about by objectified labour in capitalist society; with this, Marx uncovers the law of socio-historical development within material metabolism.

Third, “objective activity” harbours the power to reproduce itself as a new object. The pure natural force of man is the natural attribute of labour; that is, the natural attribute of the labour object and of objectified labour itself — use-value — deeply contains the real power to unlock the objectified labour chained by capital. If objectified labour is objectified objective activity, then the living labour opposed to it becomes non-objective, i.e., non-existent activity. Only non-objectified living labour under natural conditions, not under substantive conditions, can actively sublate the body and soul reified by objectified labour and realise complete objective activity. Therefore, if we want to leap out of the total process and totality of capital, we cannot enter the labour process from abstract value-substance; we can only enter the labour process through use-value, which is obscured, displaced and forgotten in the transposition and inversion of exchange-value, in order to clarify the essential power of active sublation within objective activity. Because use-value is cast aside in the valorising material exchange movement, the fetish cannot profoundly excavate the natural force of the bearer of class consciousness: “Labour, therefore, as the creator of use-values, as useful labour, is a condition of human existence which is independent of all forms of society; it is an eternal natural necessity which mediates the metabolism between man and nature, and therefore human life itself.” [28]28 Marx, *Capital*, Vol. 1, Chapter 5, Section 1. MEGA² II/5, p. 119; Fowkes trans., p. 133. Within the natural form of objectified labour there exist natural objects and natural forces that cannot be dissolved — these are also natural conditions that cannot be objectified. Marx never simply equated dialectical thinking with reified consciousness; the former opposes any either/or choice between two opposed poles, and also opposes treating reified collective forces and their passive sublation as rigid and immutable dogma. No concrete thing possessing use-value can be completely dissolved into the abstract social form. The key is that Marx seeks to elucidate a completely new historical dialectic, to reveal the immediacy and authenticity of objective activity that takes place at every moment; its essential power is the material metabolism between man and nature in non-objectified labour. Use-value cannot be dissolved into abstract, general, homogeneous objectified labour; it is natural, and it is life: “The only thing distinct from objectified labour is non-objectified labour, labour which is still in the process of objectification, labour as subjectivity.” [29]29 Marx, *Grundrisse*, Notebook IV, “Chapter on Capital (continuation).” MEGA² II/1.2, p. 498; Nicolaus trans., p. 517. The only thing that can become the opposite of capital is the natural force of labour that creates use-value; the use-value of living labour is not the economic determination of the natural form nor its power-determination, but rather a power that the common substance cannot solidify, preserve or objectify. This is also the non-objectified “reality” that Hegel’s movement of objectification cannot grasp, because nature and life cannot be dissolved into the self-movement of “spirit.” As the non-objectified material metabolism of living labour, it makes old objectified labour actively sublated into non-objectified living labour. The reified subject is sublated into a new subject that creates a new world history, becoming the essential power of the reality that creates new objects.

In sum, the antinomic logic of objectified labour concentrates the dialectical logic of the critique of political economy, explaining that the secret of the material metabolism of social labour is the change of form, and that the essential opposition within the change of form is cause and ground. The antinomic logic of objectified labour reveals the inner-outer movement of capital objectifying itself into money and commodities, and then withdrawing itself back from objectified money and commodities; it also reveals the upward movement of individual material forms arising from individuality, continuously evaporating into the One, and the downward movement from the One continuously immersing itself into the real body and soul. Capital is the secret of the reification of the real whole, driving material metabolism to ascend step by step into objectified labour, and causing objectified labour to permeate and saturate every atom of society. But because of the non-identity of reality and conception, the antinomic logic of “objectified labour” in *Capital* and the manuscripts can only be a logical opposition within non-identical reality. Rediscovering the natural conditions and use-value of living labour remains of great significance for our examination and critique of modern problems of capitalism today.

  1. “Dipping in sugar” (蘸糖) and “gilding” (镀金) are metaphors used by Marx to describe the process by which commodities acquire the form of money, drawing on the imagery of coating objects with sugar or gold leaf to give them a new appearance.
  2. “Theomorphism of the object” (物人同形) is a neologism coined by the author to parallel “anthropomorphism” (神人同形), meaning the attribution of human-like or divine-like qualities to material objects, specifically commodities and money, under capitalism.
