Marx and Engels' Critique of Capitalist Modern Civilization and Its Implications
Alongside humanity's exploration of modernization, the historical development of human society has formed distinct stages of civilization distinguished by ignorance versus reason and tradition versus modernity. From a temporal dimension, modern civilization is the sum total of civilizational achievements formed in the process of modernization, as distinct from traditional civilization. From a spatial dimension, although modern civilization originated in Western Europe, with capitalist modern civilization as its typical form, this is not the universal standard for human modern civilization; different countries and nations have their own paths to modern civilization based on their own conditions and historical cultures.
I. Capitalist Modern Civilization and Its Value Core
Regarding capitalist modern civilization, Schumpeter held that "all the distinctive features and achievements of modern civilization are the products (directly or indirectly) of the capitalist process" (Schumpeter, p. 202). Gu Hongming, in *The Spirit of the Chinese People*, took "modern European civilization" as a sample for understanding modern civilization. He argued: "All civilizations begin with the conquest of nature, for instance, by conquering and controlling the terrifying forces of nature so that they can no longer harm humanity. Today, modern European civilization has in many respects successfully conquered nature, and it must be admitted that no other civilization has yet been able to achieve this" (Gu Hongming, p. 4). Rousseau criticized that capitalist modern civilization, marked by science and the arts, far from improving social mores, had instead become a source of inequality among people. "In the end, through the establishment of private property and law, inequality became deeply entrenched and legalized" (Rousseau, p. 183).
Every civilization contains a stable value core that sustains its development. An evaluation of a civilization implicitly entails a judgment of its value core, that is, an assessment of the principles of thought and values it embodies. The value core of modern civilization is a sublation and transcendence of traditional civilizational values. Since the Industrial Revolution, the ideas of science, openness, freedom, anti-authoritarianism, and anti-traditionalism inherited from the Renaissance and the Enlightenment have become the spiritual symbols and value markers of capitalist modern civilization, breaking through the rigid, conservative, and authoritarian resistance that constrained its development. Weber held that the spirit of modern capitalism was deeply influenced by Protestant ethics; early capitalists were mostly Protestants who took the acquisition of greater wealth through legitimate market-oriented economic activity as their life goal, differing in many respects from the "adventurer capitalism" of pre-capitalist societies, which obtained wealth through military conquest or piracy (see Giddens, p. 163). Western modern civilization is rooted in Protestant ethics; under the shelter of Christian faith it developed capitalism and modern science, and became a very powerful cultural force in the world. The development of capitalism gradually diluted the spiritual force originally provided by Protestant faith; the motive of pursuing private gain grew increasingly intense, and at its root it built civilization on individualism and material interest, inevitably leading to and falling into the predicament of modern civilization (see Xu Zhuoyun, pp. 263-264). Since the Enlightenment, the modern West's manifestations of conquest, hegemony, and enslavement have deviated from the rational track of the Enlightenment, endlessly marching toward "material progress" and unrestrainedly seeking to break free from the past and conquer nature (see Tu Weiming, p. 316). These views reveal the value-enlightening role of Protestant ethics and the Enlightenment in capitalist modern civilization, but their assessments are mostly confined to exposing its value deviations and value predicaments; they have not yet systematically clarified how the value core acts upon modern civilization, nor how capitalist modern civilization, constrained by its value core, falls into civilizational crisis. The resolution of this question is of great significance for reflecting on and exploring the proper path of human civilization.
II. Marx and Engels' Critique of Capitalist Modern Civilization
Grounded in historical materialism, Marx and Engels both saw the "prosperous spectacle" of capitalist modern civilization and profoundly revealed the predicaments it inevitably entails and the crises it cannot escape. From the perspective of the historical evolution of human civilization, capitalist modern civilization has epoch-making historical significance and lays the foundation for entering a higher level of human civilization.
First, at the level of material civilization, Marx and Engels affirmed the enormous productive achievements created by capitalist large-scale industry. "The bourgeoisie, during its rule of scarce one hundred years, has created more massive and more colossal productive forces than have all preceding generations together" (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 405). An important reason why the material civilization created by the bourgeoisie so markedly surpassed previous civilizations lies in the value orientation and pursuit of material interest above all and the maximization of capital profit, which drove the bourgeoisie to use every means—science and technology, the world market, and the labor of workers—to continuously promote productive transformation and revolutionize the relations of production and all social relations. This unceasing transformation could for a time adapt to the developmental requirements of new productive forces, particularly the accumulation and expansion of capital, but it also could not overcome the backlash that such transformation and upheaval brought upon the relations of production. Amid the material civilization and social wealth created by the broad proletariat, the bourgeoisie "in all civilized countries now holds a near monopoly on all means of subsistence and on the raw materials and instruments (machinery, factories) necessary for producing them" (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, pp. 296-297), so that production is carried out only for capital, the minority bourgeoisie become the possessors and beneficiaries of material civilization, and the proletariat are reduced to appendages of and those deprived of material wealth. Under the conditions of the capitalist mode of production, the development of material civilization is based on the bourgeoisie's exclusive possession of all factors—means of production, labor power, markets, science and technology, and so on. The bourgeoisie uses advanced technology, machinery, and the division of labor to replace and suppress the creative labor in which workers freely exercise their physical and mental capacities, and uses protracted working hours, excessive labor intensity, and low wages to replace workers' control over their labor time, labor conditions, and the fruits of labor, turning what should be "the use of labor power within limits compatible with normal endurance and healthy development" into "the plundering of labor power" (see Marx, pp. 270-271). In capitalist material civilization, "the devaluation of the world of men is in direct proportion to the increasing value of the world of things" (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 51); the proletariat's growing destitution in conditions of production, labor income, and social status stands in sharp contrast to the immense abundance of commodities, the rapid expansion of capital, and the bourgeoisie's full appropriation of social wealth, leading to an irresolvable tension and antagonism in the relations between people and capital and between people themselves.
The distributive order of capitalist society also reflects the value orientation centered on the maximization of capital profit, forming a disorder of distributive justice in which a tiny minority appropriate the wealth created by the majority. This inevitably comes into conflict with the immense abundance of material wealth and socialized large-scale production, intensifying the contradiction between the socialization of production and the capitalist private appropriation of the means of production, thereby driving this system of production and this material civilization toward periodic "loss of control"—that is, the periodically erupting economic crises of overproduction. The root of overproduction lies in the essential attribute of capitalist production—its capital-centeredness: "the motive and determining purpose of the capitalist process of production is the greatest possible self-expansion of capital" (Marx, p. 384); all production serves the infinite self-expansion of capital and the boundless expansion of capital. Driven by this original motive, "all people are afflicted with a mania for profit without engaging in production" (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 251); this speculative character and excessive production and overexpansion inevitably lead capitalist material civilization toward crisis, particularly manifested as "the increasingly severe and increasingly widespread commercial crises, namely, crises of the world market" (ibid., p. 291), and thus toward "self-destruction."
Second, from the perspective of political civilization: since Columbus’ discovery of the Americas at the end of the fifteenth century, the bourgeoisie completed the primitive accumulation of capital through the bloody plunder of colonies and unequal trade with emerging markets, laying the foundation for its replacement of feudal political civilization. With the capital accumulated through primitive accumulation, the bourgeoisie used large-scale industry to displace traditional handicrafts. Having achieved dominance in the economic sphere, it necessarily required the political superstructure as a guarantee to further consolidate its economic interests and ruling position. “Having risen to become the first class in society, it also proclaimed itself the first class politically” (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 300); the bourgeoisie “elbowed aside the former ruling classes—the aristocracy, the guild masters, and the absolute monarchy that represented them” (ibid.), establishing a modern representative state power that served bourgeois interests and forming a political civilization that used the state apparatus as its means of control and representative democracy as its form. Marx and Engels pointed out: “The bourgeoisie has played a most revolutionary role in history” (ibid., p. 402). It abolished the feudal status distinctions and hierarchies that bound the masses, destroyed the authority of patriarchal feudalism, eliminated the political exploitation brought by religious theocracy and feudal rule, and concentrated its political power through political transformations such as “a unified government, unified laws, a unified national class interest, and a unified nation with unified tariffs” (ibid., p. 405), thereby advancing the development of modern political civilization, clearing away the fetters of the feudal system that constrained the development of the productive forces, and establishing a political system that encouraged free competition and was conducive to maintaining the capitalist order of production.
The innovation of the modern political system under bourgeois rule could not lead to genuine freedom and democracy. Marx held that the modern political system established by the bourgeoisie was nothing but a “illusory community,” in essence a value orientation serving the maximization of capital interests, a “committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie” (ibid., p. 402) that spoke for bourgeois interests. The modern representative political system was merely a product born of class conflict, designed to control class antagonism and safeguard class interests; the bourgeoisie used representative government as a formal veneer of fairness to obtain in substance a new means of suppressing and exploiting the oppressed classes. Through the public powers of legislation, taxation, and judicature in their hands, the bourgeoisie’s political spokesmen secured and maintained their special status as “sacrosanct,” standing above the masses of society.
Beyond consolidating internal political power, the bourgeoisie, relying on its advantages in navigation, military strength, and modern industrial production, constructed a political hegemony worldwide based on colonial trade and emerging markets, transforming the formerly relatively closed condition of world civilization. Capitalist large-scale industry “united all the small local markets into a single world market, prepared the way for civilization and progress everywhere, so that everything occurring in the civilized countries necessarily affected all other countries” (ibid., p. 299); it “made barbarian and semi-barbarian countries dependent on civilized ones, made peasant peoples dependent on bourgeois peoples, and made the East dependent on the West” (ibid., p. 405). The bourgeoisie forced the toiling masses of the colonies to surrender the ownership of their labor power and the rights to exploit raw material resources, compelled emerging markets to open their ports and trade, engaged in product dumping and unequal exchange, and continuously expanded the world market to promote capital accumulation and expansion, thereby compelling other countries and markets to submit to the bourgeois order of civilization. “Those peoples that still produced under the lower forms of slave labor or corvée labor, once drawn into the world market dominated by the capitalist mode of production—a market that made the export of their products their primary interest—would have added to the barbaric atrocities of slavery and serfdom the civilized atrocity of overwork” (Marx, p. 273). Countries and nations forcibly drawn into the world market surrendered economic control and paid the price of cheap labor and resources. Under this highly expansionary and aggressive civilizational control, “the social development of all civilized countries was roughly the same” (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, p. 306), all submitting to the logic of bourgeois exploitation and the logic of capital accumulation.
Third, from the perspective of cultural-ethical progress: the intellectual germination of modern civilization can be traced back to the European Renaissance of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance raised the banner of humanism, advocating the replacement of Christian divinity with sensuous, natural humanity, liberating human thought from religious bondage. During the Enlightenment, Europeans championed reason and freedom and advocated individualism; these values also became important value factors influencing capitalist modern civilization. These modern capitalist ideas broke the shackles that feudal patriarchal ideology had placed on people’s spirits and played a role in intellectual emancipation. Marx and Engels pointed out: “The bourgeoisie, wherever it has attained dominance, has destroyed all feudal, patriarchal, and idyllic relations” (*Selected Works of Marx and Engels*, Vol. 1, pp. 402-403). Under capitalist conditions, “all fixed, frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away” (ibid., p. 403); in terms of cultural values, people were on the one hand freed from the bonds of feudal hierarchy, and on the other hand placed in a new state of uncertainty.
After consolidating its political rule through economic power, the bourgeoisie necessarily extended its ruling power into the ideological and spiritual-cultural sphere, forming a capitalist spiritual civilization marked distinctly by bourgeois ideology. Historical materialism reveals the law of domination in the ideological sphere: “The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas. … The class that is the ruling material force of society is at the same time its ruling intellectual force” (ibid., p. 178). The bourgeoisie, dominating the material means of production and thereby controlling the state apparatus, necessarily on this basis dominated the intellectual means of production, using ideological instruments and spiritual-cultural products to consolidate the power of capital. This spiritual civilization serving capital exhibited a high degree of materiality, creating an internal tension and opposition between the material and the spiritual. Once the rapid expansion of the material occupied people’s life-world, it inevitably led to the materialization and extreme impoverishment of the spiritual world. Marx and Engels criticized the “vulgarity” and “impoverishment” of capitalist spiritual civilization, holding that the capitalist system—centered on capital, aimed at money, and dedicated to the material enrichment of the few—left “no other bond between people than naked self-interest, than callous ‘cash payment’” (ibid., p. 403). Proceeding from the fetishism of money, Marx criticized the alienation between people and money: money, the intermediary for measuring commodity prices, became the object of worship in capitalist civilization, leading to the alienation of the human being and to the actual domination of the human being. The bourgeoisie took the maximization of capital interests as its secular pursuit, investing endlessly in the production and reproduction of capital, and its spiritual world was impoverished. The working class, in order to maintain its survival, was bound endlessly to production activities under the domination of capital, and its spiritual world was equally impoverished. This immense spiritual emptiness imposed on all members of society could not supplement or consolidate the economic and political system, and could easily, under the impact of economic crisis, accelerate the formation of an overall spiritual collapse and cultural crisis.
Fourth, from the level of social civilization, the capitalist system liberated people from the constraints of the traditional, conservative, and rigidified feudal social system, broke the hierarchical order of feudal society and the traditional division of labor, drove large numbers of laborers living in the countryside off the land and away from the means of production, and concentrated large numbers of originally independent and self-reliant workers into urban factories, where they became mere “cogs” in a vast production system. Under this drastically transformed social division of labor, the development of capitalist modern civilization made the previously unproblematic questions “What is the human being? Why does one exist?” increasingly perplexing (see Huang Lizhi), and people fell into social relations in which they were more adrift and dependent than ever, able to survive only by selling their labor power, as if trapped in a cage.
Populations deprived of land and means of production gathered continuously from the countryside into the cities, selling their only remaining labor power to capital, which held absolute power economically and politically, and were forced to depress the value of their labor power to the level of bare subsistence, falling “in whole batches into the same state of decay, desolation, and poverty” in the cities (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 369). Capital not only replaced adult male workers with machinery but also replaced adult male workers with female and child laborers, and the whole society fell into a miserable condition in which a tiny number of capitalists controlled the fate of the vast majority of its members. “The social combination of the labor process thus appears as the organized suppression of the worker’s vitality, freedom, and independence as an individual” (Marx, p. 579). Workers were forced into mechanically repetitive labor, lost their freedom and creativity under the all-round social control based on capital’s economic and political domination, and could at any moment be replaced and discarded by capital through machinery. The value orientation centered on capital and the maximization of capital’s interests transformed tensions in the relations of production among the vast majority of social members into tensions in social relations generally, and the social relations among people shifted from mutual dependence and mutual cooperation into alienated relations of intense competition and high tension. Marx held that only when the proletariat recognizes its own revolutionary character and thoroughness and unites to organize itself as a political and social force can it liberate itself from the shackles of this capitalist social civilization.
Fifth, from the level of ecological civilization, modernization has changed not only the relations between human beings and between human beings and production, but also the relations between human beings and nature. Capitalist industrial production enormously enhanced humanity’s capacity to utilize and transform nature. The use of the spinning jenny, the locomotive, and all kinds of machinery, the mining of ores, the digging of canals, and so on, greatly stimulated people’s enthusiasm for exploring nature, raised the efficiency with which humanity utilized natural resources, and thereby raised the production efficiency of large-scale industry.
The rapid advance of capitalist large-scale industry nurtured the bourgeoisie’s greed to conquer nature, and the value orientation of material interest above all else led the bourgeoisie to turn a blind eye to nature, to cease to revere nature, and to exploit nature without limit. Marx held that “without nature, without the sensuous external world, the worker can create nothing” (Selected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 52), that “human beings live from nature,” and that nature is “the human being’s inorganic body” (ibid., p. 55). Engels exposed the unbridled plunder of nature by capitalist large-scale industry, criticizing the ecological degradation caused by clearing forests for cultivation, the soil erosion caused by indiscriminate deforestation, the discharge of factory waste gases and wastewater, the accumulation of garbage, the pollution of rivers, and the famines and other ecological and social consequences caused by the indiscriminate introduction of new species. He criticized the bourgeoisie’s delusion of dominating nature amid the swelling of material desire, exposed the error of a view of nature centered on capital and dominated by a minority, and called on people not to “be too intoxicated with our victories over nature” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 9, p. 559), lest they inevitably suffer nature’s “revenge.” He stressed that humanity belongs to nature and must “recognize and correctly apply the laws of nature,” rather than habitually “interfering” with nature, that we must see not only the more immediate effects of production on nature but also foresee its more remote effects, and that we cannot stop at recognizing these effects but must thoroughly overthrow the system itself that gives rise to ecological ruin, carrying out a thorough transformation of the capitalist social system so as to realize a harmonious and unified relation between humanity and nature.
III. Exploring a New Path of Human Civilization Oriented toward the Free and Comprehensive Development of the Human Person and Manifesting the Value of Community
Marx and Engels profoundly revealed the underlying logic, structural predicament, and tendency toward decay of capitalist modern civilization, and proposed a program of revolutionary movement for more thorough institutional transformation and the self-liberation of the proletariat, bringing profound implications for the exploration of a path of human civilization more in keeping with the laws of social and historical development. Capitalism inaugurated modern human civilization, but the antinomy of the logic of capital and the limits and predicaments of development derived from it determine that it can neither realize the free and comprehensive development of the human person nor take the liberation of all humanity as its value pursuit (see Liu Tongfang). The human being is the most dynamic and most active force in creating civilization, and the process by which human beings create civilization is the process by which they make history in a community in which they comprehensively develop themselves. Only a civilization truly centered on the human being can unite countless dynamic, active individuals into a genuine community, achieve a comprehensively developed self, form social relations of comprehensive intercourse, and create a civilization of comprehensive progress. The free and comprehensive development of the human person must be made the aim of civilization, and the will and value of community must be fully manifested, so as to realize the comprehensive development of the human person and the comprehensive progress of society.
First, material civilization is the unity of the immense abundance of material products and the comprehensive development of the human person, and is the process by which the vast majority of people create the fruits of civilization and comprehensively develop themselves within a genuine community. The question of “for whom, by whom, and for whose development” is the key question reflecting the essence and value of a civilization, and is also the core question determining the vitality and sustainability of that civilization. A civilization’s view of development, that is, its developmental aim, mainly resolves the question of “for whom” and “by whom” the accumulation of the fruits of civilization is achieved. A civilization’s view of distribution, that is, its distributive value orientation, mainly resolves the question of “for whose development” the fruits of civilization are distributed, and according to whose will and interests. Whether under slavery, feudal autocracy, or the capitalist system, history has repeatedly proven that when a minority owns the means of production and enjoys the fruits of civilization while the vast majority are reduced to those who cede the fruits of civilization and are deprived of their due rights, such a system cannot long endure. Capitalist modern civilization, with capital as its dominant force, has formed a developmental logic of “for capital, by the laboring people, for the development of capital,” generating distributive injustice in which “the contribution of the human subject” is subordinated to and serves “the interests of capital.” Capital uses labor power to its absolute limit without end, extracts the maximum surplus labor from each person through technology, management, and other means, and every social unit exhibits a self-organizing character of profit-seeking and capital supremacy, so that the whole of social production easily falls into a state of disorder, leading to imbalance between supply and demand in the production of material civilization, overproduction, and economic crisis, causing the production of material civilization to spiral out of control and become bubble-like, and producing the civilization-devouring situation in which “a few plunderers dispossess the masses of the people” (Marx, p. 874).
One of the basic functions of civilization is to create material civilization achievements that satisfy human survival needs. The value attributes of material civilization determine the value foundation of civilization as a whole. Humans are the subjects of civilizational activity, as well as the creators and beneficiaries of material civilization production. Only by unifying the developmental view and distributive view of material civilization, achieving the unity of civilizational values of "for people, by people, and developing people," and realizing the organic unity of the people-centered essence and value of civilization—that is, achieving a high degree of consistency between the subjective driving force and subjective interests of civilizational development—can the great abundance of material products and the comprehensive development of humanity advance in coordination and mutual reinforcement. By establishing and perfecting the ownership of the means of production, distribution systems, and social division of labor that safeguard the interests of the overwhelming majority, and by constructing mechanisms to prevent and correct capital's unbridled expansion and disorderly development, capital no longer stands "outside labor" in the posture of a master, but rather combines with labor in the posture of stimulating and developing people's subjective capacities. This ensures that material civilization production is no longer the profit-seeking, capital-first production of a minority who own the means of production, but rather, through the organic combination of an effective market and a capable government, empowers laborers to integrate the relations between humanity and things, and between subject and object, within a united community. Through rational production mechanisms, distribution mechanisms, and division-of-labor orders, laborers' innovative and creative capacities are transformed into the productive forces of material civilization and into fair and reasonable distribution for each laborer, enabling laborers to jointly create and jointly share the fruits of material civilization. This truly reflects people's subjective will at the level of the civilizational system, fully safeguards people's subjective rights, fully unleashes people's subjective creative capacities, enhances people's ability to handle subject-object relations, and truly realizes "the augmentation of the world of things in direct proportion to the augmentation of the world of humanity," achieving the unity of the great abundance of civilizational achievements and the comprehensive development of humanity.
Second, political civilization is the sum total of a modern political system and civilizational order of intercourse in which, internally, a genuine political community manages and regulates society, and externally, civilization advocates harmonious co-governance. The narrative of modern political civilization under capitalist conditions deviates from the basic principles of historical materialism, regarding the state as an independent force liberated from religious theocracy and feudal absolute monarchy, and touting it as a "Leviathan-like" [12]12 A reference to Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan (1651), which depicts the state as a sovereign "mortal god" or artificial man that secures peace and order by concentrating absolute authority, an image Marx and Engels critically appropriate to expose the capitalist state's class character. great force that seeks peace internally and resists foreign enemies externally (see Hobbes, p. 132). Yet the capitalist state "has always been, and above all, the guarantor of capitalist property relations. … To this day it is clearly the instrument of the rule of the capitalist class" (Sweezy, p. 425). The bourgeoisie deliberately blurs the determined-and-determining relationship between the political superstructure and the economic base. Internally, it constructs a "illusory political community," using the state apparatus and so-called "democracy" to safeguard the ruling position of the bourgeoisie, excluding the people from the real subjects of power through representative democracy and other forms, turning political power that belongs to the people and serves the people into an externalized force opposed to themselves, abstracting the people's subject status in the political community, and plunging their subjective identification into nothingness. Beyond dominating the people internally, the world history opened up externally by the logic of capital is in essence the extension of the capitalist mode of production on a world scale. The community constructed by the capitalist civilizational form is called by Marx an "illusory community" precisely because the logic of capital, in world history, maintains and consolidates the hierarchical order of "center-periphery" in class society (see Wang Yangyang). Through such a narrative discourse of political civilization, the bourgeoisie constructs a civilizational order of subordination and dependency favorable to itself, forcing other civilizations to submit to the unidirectional logic of capital civilization.
A political civilization with people as the value subject is the product of satisfying people's needs for political ideas and practices that safeguard the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority. A political community characterized by people's democratic politics transcends the "illusory community," transforming "illusory, abstract people" into "real people," and is a "real community" capable of eliminating class antagonisms, reflecting the democratic will of the people, and safeguarding the people's democratic political rights. A modern state characterized by people's democratic politics manages and regulates society efficiently and effectively internally, attaches great importance to the objective material foundation for promoting people's political emancipation, and, by implementing a system of ownership of the means of production that safeguards the interests of the overwhelming majority rather than a minority, fundamentally prevents privileged groups representing minority interests from rising to become the political "first class," effectively channeling the boundaries of capital's activities, preventing capital's interference in the political community, and preserving the purity of the people's democratic will. By advocating substantive democracy rather than formal democracy, it forms a democratic system that broadly covers the broad masses of the people, enabling the overwhelming majority to rely on effective democratic political mechanisms to genuinely express their democratic demands, to condense the broadest and most universal democratic will of the people, to allow the will that truly represents the people's needs for political emancipation to be fully manifested, and to enable the people to achieve political emancipation and comprehensive emancipation within the "real community."
The development of world history overlaps with the development of modern civilizational history; the development of modern civilization shapes the face of world history. "The more the original isolation of separate nationalities is destroyed by the developed mode of production and intercourse and the division of labor between various nations naturally brought forth by these, the more history becomes world history" (Selected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 168). The development of world history breaks the previous path of civilization's generation with a certain region as its unit, opening up a path of mutually constitutive development in which various nations and civilizations engage in comprehensive intercourse. The free and comprehensive development of humanity is embedded in the process of world historical development; as "individuals are replaced by world-historical, empirically universal individuals" (ibid., p. 166), "individuals can free themselves from various national and local barriers and enter into actual intercourse with the production of the whole world (including spiritual production), and thus acquire the capacity to enjoy this all-sided production of the whole earth (the creations of humanity)" (ibid., p. 169). Universal intercourse based on the mutual interdependence of all humanity sublates individualism, nationalism, and regionalism, discards Western-centrism, transcends the clash of civilizations thesis and the superiority-inferiority of civilizations thesis, and promotes each individual's conscious reconciliation of the relations between self and other, individual and species, and region and globe, achieving the free and comprehensive development of humanity amid the universal intercourse of civilizations, the manifestation of civilizational diversity, and the safeguarding of civilizational equality.
Third, cultural-ethical progress is the sum total of achievements in the spiritual sphere that are coordinated with and adapted to the level of development of material civilization, and is also the process by which humanity truly grasps its own essential forces, unleashes the subjective momentum of life's innovation and creation, receives dual nourishment in the material and spiritual dimensions, and achieves comprehensive physical and mental development. Capital-centered capitalist modern civilization is the reflection of the logic of capital's infinite self-expansion in the production of spiritual civilization. Its public and public-welfare nature is maximally dissolved, leading to the high commercialization, excessive packaging, and vulgarization of cultural works and services, triggering the comprehensive penetration and control of human life by money fetishism, commodity fetishism, and capital fetishism, causing people to blindly follow a social value predicament characterized by inflated material desires and nihilistic spirituality, and giving rise to a cultural crisis of "utilitarianism and the total destruction of the meaning of life caused by utilitarianism" (Schumpeter, p. 207). Under the tide of globalization, many other civilizational systems suppressed by Western civilization possess intellectual resources capable of correcting and supplementing the predicaments of modern civilization (see Xu Zhuoyun, pp. 268-269), pointing a new direction for resolving the predicaments of modern civilization, returning to the essence of civilization, and promoting the diversity, national character, and historicity of civilization.
The spiritual world points to the meaning of human existence, encompassing not only individual-level intellectual, emotional, and volitional elements of thought and feeling, but also collective cultural-psychological structures, manifesting the collective spiritual outlook of social mentality, social culture, and so forth. This reflects both the conscious subjectivity and creative vitality of the human being, and serves as a concentrated expression of the vitality and creativity of a country and a nation. The richness of the human spiritual world is the value yardstick for the emergence of the subject of modern civilization; the human spiritual world is the more essential and deeper dimension of people’s all-round development. Only by truly treating people as both the subjects who create the fruits of cultural-ethical progress and the subjects who share in them can we overcome the constraint that dependence on things imposes on people’s all-round development, and break the spiritual and cultural shackles that the expansion of capital and the rule of things impose on people. Historical materialism holds that cultural-ethical progress does not exist independently of material civilization; the comprehensiveness of material production determines the richness of social relations and spiritual production. “The common association of all members of society, who jointly and systematically utilize the productive forces; developing production to a scale that can satisfy the needs of all; putting an end to the situation in which the interests of some are sacrificed to satisfy the needs of others; … enabling the talents of all members of society to develop fully” (Selected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, pp. 308–309) — thereby fully realizing people’s development of their own labor capacity, social-interaction capacity, and innovative capacity in the collective, social process of material production, and in turn enabling them to create and enjoy the fruits of cultural-ethical progress and to develop their own physical and intellectual capacities in an all-round way. At the same time, cultural-ethical progress in the collective sense necessarily requires overcoming and transcending the overly commercialized and utilitarian mechanisms of spiritual and cultural production, taking people’s need for a more comprehensive and nobler spiritual and cultural life as the value standard of spiritual-cultural production, guiding and encouraging cultural producers to form a people-centered orientation in spiritual-cultural production, and producing more spiritual-cultural works that possess both historicity and contemporaneity, reflect the historical and cultural traditions of the nation, and integrate the spirit of the times with modern aesthetic pursuits — thereby satisfying people’s need for national, historical, and contemporary spiritual identification, allowing people to obtain confirmation of their essence through the consumption of high-quality cultural products, and enabling all members of society to fully manifest their subjective vitality and creativity in a rich spiritual world.
Fourth, social civilization is the civilizational fruit of people developing themselves in an all-round way and developing social relations in an all-round way through creative labor in transforming the world, forming an active yet orderly social community. Capitalist modern civilization uses capital, technology, and the division of labor as means to conceal and suppress human subjectivity, producing “an inversion of the relation between dead labor and living labor, between value and the force that creates value” (Marx, p. 360), artificially manufacturing the reversal and opposition of subject and object, leading to the consequences of highly strained social relations and vicious competition, and causing the modern social crisis of the separation of the individual from the community and the conflict between individual development and community development. Capitalism’s value core of prioritizing material interests and maximizing capital interests determines that social development inevitably falls into the predicament in which the development of things rules over the development of people and the greed of capital’s limitless self-expansion suppresses the realization of human subjectivity; at the same time, it prepares the conditions for people to liberate themselves from social control mechanisms such as capital, technology, and the division of labor, and to realize the all-round development of the human being and the all-round liberation of social relations.
Human civilization, whose aim is the free and all-round development of the individual, must necessarily cast off the shackles that dependence on things imposes on people’s all-round development, return to people themselves the relation between the human and the thing, between subject and object, in the course of modernization, and realize the modernization of people’s social-interaction relations. Social civilization in the modern horizon is a civilization of comprehensive social progress; the all-round development of each individual is the precondition for the all-round development of society. The all-round development of the human being is socio-historically conditioned; it is a process in which people manifest their social subjectivity in social production. On the one hand, creative labor is the primary fulcrum of the Marxist project of “changing the world” and the general foundation of the existence and development of human society. (See Dai Mucai.) Every person capable of labor has an essential need to participate in labor and will embed themselves in the social production structure in some form, developing themselves in an all-round way by utilizing productive factors such as capital, land, and technology and bringing into play their own labor-creative capacity. It is necessary to perfect a social production structure centered on the human being, to create a division-of-labor order conducive to bringing into play people’s comprehensiveness and innovative-creative capacity, to break the old division of labor that segments and suppresses people, to avoid the dissolution of people’s comprehensiveness and creativity by mechanical, fragmented division-of-labor structures, and to cast off the constraint that capital’s supremacy imposes on people’s individuality and creativity — “through the abolition of the old division of labor, through industrial education, through variation of work” (Selected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 1, p. 308) — so that people can labor according to both social needs and personal interests, liberating people from repetitive, mechanical labor divisions while also enabling them to master modern technology, allowing technology to better serve people, and then further embedding them into more creative division-of-labor structures, so that the way people develop themselves in an all-round way in social production is once again under their own control, and through productive practice they realize labor autonomy, active creativity, and the sharing of fruits, making accumulated labor a means for expanding, enriching, and improving people’s lives, and making labor the first need of people’s free and all-round development rather than a means of subsistence. On the other hand, social civilization is a civilization that progresses comprehensively through comprehensive social interaction, and a civilization that realizes the all-round development of all people within overarching social relations — that is, each person engages in social interaction and cooperation not in isolation but in close connection with others, and realizes each individual’s free and all-round development not one-sidedly but within the overall progress of the community. It is necessary to regulate the order of social interaction and competition, to form a social culture that values people’s subjective contributions, encourages people’s developmental potential, and emphasizes win-win cooperation among social members, so that people develop their capacities socially rather than atomistically, so that each person actively seeks their own existential value in relation to the community, so that in comprehensive interaction and win-win cooperation among people, the unity of individuality and sociality is realized, the free all-round development of the individual is in harmony with the comprehensive progress of society, and an active yet orderly social community is constructed by activating the comprehensiveness and creativity of all members of society.
Fifth, ecological civilization is the civilizational fruit of humanity continuously deepening its understanding of the relation between the human and nature, and regulating and transforming nature under the value orientation of harmonious coexistence between the human and nature. In the process of transforming nature and creating civilizational fruits, humanity necessarily humanizes nature, confirming the essential capacity of the human being to understand and grasp the laws of nature, to follow and apply them, triggering the dual transformation of “the humanization of external nature” and “the humanization of internal nature,” and realizing the dual transformation of external nature and one’s own nature. Capitalist modern civilization disregards the essence of the human being as an existent of nature, “dominating nature as if standing outside nature” (Collected Works of Marx and Engels, Vol. 9, p. 560), forming a distorted ecological view in which the human is placed above nature, vainly attempting to transcend the constraints of natural necessity and to transform and conquer nature at will, subjecting nature to unrestrained modernizing transformation, over-humanizing nature, subverting the rational mode of material exchange between the human and nature, leading to the accumulation of numerous irreparable ecological consequences in the course of modernization, and producing a highly strained relation between the human and nature and an ecological crisis.
Marxist philosophy demonstrates the dialectical unity of humanity and nature through “the humanization of nature” and “the naturalization of humanity,” scientifically revealing that humans originate from and belong to nature, and that humans must confirm their own essential existence through the labor process of material exchange with nature. This not only elucidates the social-historical character of nature’s constraint on humanity’s practical activity of creating history, but also points out that humans must control and regulate their own mode of production to overcome their destructive impact on nature. It is necessary to grasp the scale and boundary between “nature-in-itself” and “humanized nature,” fully recognize the mutual subject-object relationship between humans and nature, and avoid treating nature as a pure object and instrumental existence. Through the labor practice of material exchange with nature, humans must return to nature, conform to natural laws, transform nature within limits, reduce excessive intervention in nature, handle the relationships between the immediate and the long-term, between governance costs and development benefits, and between partial development outcomes and the overall situation of human development, overcome the contradiction between blind development and expansion and the finiteness of ecological resources, and the contradiction between the pursuit of short-term returns and the long-term nature of ecological restoration, promote ecological priority, conservation, intensive use, and green low-carbon development, and achieve the dialectical unity of utilizing and protecting nature. Adhere to the continuity and integrity of ecological governance and protection, realize the unity of the regularity and purposiveness of human behavior, satisfy humanity’s own reasonable needs on the basis of following natural laws and ecological norms, and achieve a genuine reconciliation of the contradictory relationship between humans and nature.
In short, civilization is the process of disenchanting the traditional world, casting off previous mysterious and transcendental bonds, and tending toward rationalization and intellectualization (in Weber’s terms). With the multipolar development of the world and the spiral ascent of civilizational evolution, capitalist modern civilization is also being continuously “disenchanted,” exposing its structural predicaments and civilizational decay trends under the constraints of its civilizational values. Capitalist modern civilization, which prioritizes material interests and capital above all, sounds an alarm for the development of human civilization. This suggests a return from “thing-centeredness” to “people-centeredness” as the value foundation of civilization, allowing humans to truly become the most dynamic and active force in creating civilization, enabling humans to develop material civilization, political civilization, cultural-ethical progress, social civilization, and ecological civilization within a community where they comprehensively develop themselves and engage in comprehensive interaction, embedding and unifying the comprehensive development of humans within civilizational practice, and forging a new path of human civilization that bridges disputes over civilizational values, resolves crises of civilizational conflict, and promotes the sustainable development of humanity.
