Generative Artificial Intelligence and the New Domain of Value Movement in Digital Capitalism
In recent years, the high innovation, strong penetration, and broad coverage of the new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology have exerted extensive and profound impacts on the production, realization, and distribution of value in digital capitalism. In particular, the emergence and dazzling iterative upgrades of generative AI represented by ChatGPT have greatly stimulated the value potential of data elements and promoted an overall leap in digital productive forces, marking the entry of human knowledge production into the era of large models. The history of capitalist development shows that every major technological innovation and its derivative effects trigger adjustments in relations of production and transformations in the production system. At present, the production, exchange, circulation, and distribution of digital capitalism are accelerating toward intelligence, and “AI capitalism” [1]1 “AI capitalism” (人工智能资本主义) refers to a stage of capitalism in which artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, becomes the core driver of value production and accumulation, reshaping labor processes and capital-labor relations. has begun to take shape.
From the perspective of Marxist political economy, the basic trajectory of the entanglement of capital and labor, technology and institutions under the capitalist mode of production is that capital strives to use technological progress to discipline labor in order to extract surplus value, but at the same time, the “subjectification” of dead labor [2]2 “Dead labor” (死劳动) is a Marxist term for past labor embodied in means of production (e.g., machinery), as opposed to living labor performed by workers. under the support of technology inevitably devours value. Faced with the phenomenal craze triggered by ChatGPT’s “breaking out of the circle” [3]3 “Breaking out of the circle” (出圈) is a Chinese internet slang term meaning something becomes widely known beyond its original niche or professional community., an issue that urgently demands attention and in-depth exploration is: in what “innovative” ways will the technical emergence of generative AI and the comprehensive upgrade of intelligent machines enact the value movement of digital capitalism?
To deepen the understanding of the developmental laws of digital capitalism, it is necessary to conduct preliminary explorations of the following frontier issues. First, from the perspective of commodity production in digital capitalism, generative AI is unlocking a new cognitive revolution—what new changes will this bring to the production and consumption of digital commodities? Second, from the perspective of the labor process in digital capitalism, what new characteristics does the value creation of digital labor under human-machine collaboration exhibit? Third, from the perspective of capital accumulation in digital capitalism, what new trends will the competition among digital oligarchs over large models lead to in digital capital accumulation? Furthermore, with the accelerated development of AI technology, what new changes will the production order of digital capitalism face?
I. The Cognitive Revolution and the New Stage of Digital Commodity Production and Consumption
“The Taylorism of the 20th century set off a ‘productivity revolution’ that rapidly increased labor productivity, while in digital capitalist society, how to initiate a knowledge-based productivity revolution, that is, a ‘knowledge productivity revolution,’ will become the key to development.” [4]4 This is a quotation from a Chinese source, likely a scholarly work on digital capitalism and knowledge production. At present, the rapid advance of generative AI technology is initiating an industrial revolution in the field of human knowledge production. The automation of capitalist information and knowledge production is gradually becoming a reality, thereby breaking through the capacity constraints of digital commodity production and accelerating the entry into a new stage of hyper-personalized customization.
(1) “Synthetic Data” Breaks the Supply Constraints on Data Elements
In the era of the digital economy, data has become a key factor of production. In practice, massive, heterogeneous data, after being processed as elements through manual cleaning and other steps, becomes the “fuel” for intelligent machines, the “raw material” for digital commodities, and the “asset” of digital platforms. However, the commercial practice of analytical AI in recent years shows that the production and consumption of digital commodities face increasingly tight constraints on the supply of digital elements. The reasons are: the quality of existing data resources such as text, images, and audio is uneven, making it difficult to cover long-tail and edge-case data, resulting in insufficient data diversity; the collection and annotation of AI training data are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly; the uncertainty of data element supply has increased due to factors such as government data regulation, user privacy protection, and digital geopolitics; and the deepening segmentation of the data commodity market has highlighted the “shortage” of proprietary data in vertical domains.
At present, AI large model technology is creating new momentum for data valorization. Generative AI’s ultimate pursuit of “human-like intelligence” and its stunning performance are inseparable from the data feeding of carefully organized high-quality corpora. It is reported that the AI language model GPT-3 was trained using 45 terabytes (TB) of data, equivalent to the text volume of 450,000 years of the *People’s Daily*. The dialogue programming language model LaMDA’s training data came from 1.56 trillion words scraped from the internet. The contrastive language-image pre-training model CLIP collected over 400 million pairs of “text-image” training data from the internet. For digital capital, “data hunger” is more intense than ever. In response, digital tech giants are no longer satisfied with “data enclosure” and “data colonialism” [5]5 “Data colonialism” (数据殖民) is a critical term describing the extraction and exploitation of user data by digital platforms, analogous to historical colonialism.; instead, they are taking a different path by actively developing synthetic data technology to efficiently achieve large-scale production of data elements through data augmentation, simulated generation, and data collection in simulated environments. [6]6 Synthetic data refers to artificially generated data that mimics real-world data, used to train AI models without relying on scarce or privacy-sensitive real datasets.
Synthetic data can mathematically or statistically reflect the properties of real-world data, and thus can serve as a substitute for real-world data to train, test, and validate AI large models. Moreover, the cost of synthetic data is far lower than that of real data. Some institutions predict that in 2024, 60% of the data used to train large models will be synthetic data, and it is expected that by 2030, the vast majority of data used by AI large models will be synthesized by AI. [7]7 These predictions are from industry reports or market research firms, though the specific source is not cited in the original text. In this way, synthetic data created based on AI content generation technology is becoming prevalent. It can not only automatically generate secure, labeled, and preprocessed standard data to satisfy the increasingly “hungry” AI large models, but the automation of data element supply also allows digital capital to further shake off the “shackles” of digital labor, more wantonly driving intelligent machines forward at full speed, in order to achieve the ultimate harvesting of a new round of “data dividends” from the intelligent economy.
(2) Model Pre-training Promotes the “Generalization” of Intelligent Machine Productive Forces
Under the capitalist mode of production, “the instruments of labor have gone through various forms of change, and their final form is the machine, or more precisely, the automatic system of machinery.” [8]8 This is a paraphrase of Karl Marx’s discussion of machinery in *Grundrisse* (1857–1858), specifically on the development of the automatic system of machinery. Undoubtedly, in the stage of digital capitalism, the iterative upgrades of intelligent machines are, at a breathtaking technological acceleration, fully demonstrating the “autonomy” of the “system of machinery.” However, to the “regret” of digital capital, in the application scenarios of analytical AI, intelligent machines in concrete forms such as search engines, facial recognition, intelligent voice, and algorithmic recommendations are all focused on single modalities and specialized in pattern recognition and behavior prediction in specific domains. Borrowing the terminology of new institutional economics, intelligent machines have strong “asset specificity”: “what they have been taught they may know, but what they have not been taught they will not know.” The phenomenon of “model silos” greatly restricts the digital production potential of intelligent machines.
In contrast, under the engineering combination of “big data + large computing power + strong algorithms,” AI large models can “achieve miracles through brute force” and realize “what has not been taught, they can also do.” From the perspective of manufacturing mechanisms, digital capital adopts advanced neural network architectures, “pre-trains” the base model by “devouring” massive unlabeled datasets, and then fine-tunes the model based on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). With only a few-shot or even zero-shot learning, it can successfully complete new tasks and meet specific purposes. That is, AI large models possess significant downstream task adaptability, promoting the “generalization” of intelligent machine productive forces, enabling “industrial assembly-line deployment across different industries, vertical domains, and functional scenarios.” In other words, with the support of generative AI technology, the standardized development and ubiquitous application of intelligent machines can produce a dizzying “intelligence emergence” effect, thereby providing digital capitalist automated commodity production with virtual production lines installed on cloud-network terminals. Once using intelligent machines to produce intelligent machines becomes a reality, “AI capitalism” will acquire its own specific means of production and thereby establish a technological foundation suited to itself.
(3) AI Content Generation Technology Promotes the Automation of Digital Content Production
Having entered the stage of digital capitalism, digital content production has become the most epochal form of use-value production in capitalist society. From the era of Web 1.0, with professionally generated content (PGC), to Web 2.0, with user-generated content (UGC), and now to the current era of AI-generated content (AIGC), the development and application of digital technology have continuously driven changes in the mode of digital content production.
As shown in Table 1 (omitted), from the perspective of content production methods—whether text generation, script drafting, web page translation, site creation, or code writing—AI-generated content overcomes the shortcoming of professionally generated content being “slow to deliver” and eliminates the drawback of user-generated content being “a mixed bag,” becoming the “factory” and “assembly line” for automated digital content production. This production method can ultimately satisfy massive personalized demands in a low-marginal-cost, high-efficiency manner. For this reason, with its rapid response capability, vivid knowledge output, and rich application scenarios, AI content generation is increasingly becoming a new engine for both material and spiritual production in human society.
Furthermore, AI content generation technology empowers the development of various industries, giving rise to new digital economy products, new business forms, and new models, thereby further consolidating the value system of digital capitalism. First, in commercial applications across scenarios such as text creation, human-computer interaction, audio-visual media, education, and finance, generative AI products can reach “human-like” or even “superhuman” levels; their “usefulness of things” is astonishing, significantly enhancing user stickiness and willingness to consume. Second, “Model as a Service” (MaaS) has transformed AI applications from a “handicraft workshop” to a “factory model.” [9]9 “Model as a Service” (MaaS) refers to a cloud computing service model where AI models are provided to users on a pay-per-use basis, typically charging based on the volume of data processed or computational resources consumed. Under the MaaS business model, digital capital charges based on model invocation volume (i.e., according to the number of data requests and actual computation volume), achieving pricing by “data,” which greatly reduces the market transaction costs of digital content commodities.
Moreover, after the emergence of generative AI technology, digital capital can not only more easily use machine intelligence to objectify and appropriate society’s “general intellect,” but it has also unprecedentedly “infrastructuralized” intelligent machines, firmly controlling them in its own hands. The result is that digital capital monopolizes the “means of cognition,” [10]10 “Means of cognition” refers to the tools, data, and algorithms that enable knowledge production and information processing, which in digital capitalism are increasingly controlled by capital. further solidifying the ownership foundation of digital commodity production.
(4) “Human-Machine Dialogue” Promotes an Upgrade in Digital Consumption Experience
Since the birth of the computer, the “atomic world” of human material production and daily life has been continuously “bitified,” and increasingly rich digital products and services have profoundly changed the consumption landscape of contemporary capitalist masses. Especially after entering the Web 2.0 era, the easy-to-operate, user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) has greatly dissolved the digital divide brought by “command-line” operations; “using a computer” and “surfing the internet” are no longer geek novelties, and ordinary people can easily enjoy convenient digital services. But fundamentally, analytical AI statically displays information, and its digital content presents an algorithmic “coldness” and technical alienation in human-computer interaction that cannot be eliminated. Moreover, algorithmic manipulation such as “big data price discrimination against regular customers” frequently infringes on user rights, further exacerbating user distrust in human-computer interaction.
Currently, the “breakout” of ChatGPT has accelerated the implementation of generative AI technology, driving an upgrade in the consumption experience of digital commodities. Based on minimalist interaction through natural language, it immerses ordinary users instantly in a more natural, direct, and smooth conversational digital scenario, bringing them a refreshing digital consumption experience. This is mainly reflected in the following aspects: in real-time information retrieval, generative search engines present results in a chapter-reading format, replacing the simple list of summary links displayed by traditional search engines, placing information at users’ fingertips more quickly and comprehensively, greatly catering to ordinary users’ psychology of seeking “instant answers”; in digital service provision, generative AI integrates through embedding and plug-in methods, transforming the interaction methods of massive applications, with functions covering areas such as online ordering, enterprise office work, process optimization, image and text processing, product marketing, and recommendations, thereby enhancing the functionality of mobile apps. Furthermore, through precise targeting that “understands what you think, knows what you need, and solves what worries you,” and with full participation from intelligent customer service, intelligent marketing, digital human livestreaming, etc., it brings online consumption an immersive experience of blending virtual and real, with multi-sensory interaction.
II. Human-Machine Collaboration and New Characteristics of Digital Labor Value Creation
Entering the digital economy era, analytical AI has initiated the “second machine revolution” of capitalism, also giving rise to various forms of digital labor. At present, the technological applications of generative AI are springing up like mushrooms. “With the support of large models, AI is transforming from a ‘tool’ into a ‘partner’ for humans.” [11]11 This is a quotation from a source cited in the original text, referencing the shift in AI’s role from tool to partner. Human-machine collaboration will continuously decompose the tasks of digital labor, fundamentally changing the way digital work is completed and its content, and the value creation of digital labor will generally exhibit new characteristics of “intelligent augmentation.”
(1) Human-Machine Collaboration Promotes the “Value Elevation” of Unpaid Labor
The development of the platform economy shows that active users are both consumers of digital services and producers of data and content on digital platforms. [12]12 This refers to the dual role of platform users as both consumers and producers, a key concept in digital labor studies. From the perspective of human-machine relations, the augmenting role of analytical AI is mainly reflected in increasing the exposure and attention of user-generated content through algorithmic recommendations, but its assistance in users’ production of digital content is negligible. In other words, AI technology empowerment is actually “empowering the machine,” enabling ordinary users to achieve orderly presentation of “genuine expression” and “self-expression” in digital cyberspace, and in the process of stimulating likes, comments, reposts, tips, etc., it helps digital capital harvest massive amounts of data and user attention.
In contrast, a series of easy-to-use generative AI applications like ChatGPT have greatly enriched users’ “toolbox” for content generation. It is certain that “AI models will become ubiquitous assistants for every worker, placing new ultra-personalized intelligence in people’s hands to increase productivity.” [13]13 This is a quotation from a source cited in the original text, emphasizing the productivity-enhancing potential of AI. This is reflected in the following: under the human-machine collaboration model, on the one hand, instrumental tasks such as content creation, optimization, and personalization in user-generated content can all be automatically completed by intelligent machines driven by generative AI technology; on the other hand, ordinary users can transcend the limitations of “technique” and “efficiency,” focusing solely on creative conception, content imagination, and self-expression. In this way, generative AI both “empowers the machine” and “empowers intelligence,” and low-threshold AI creation makes “artistic survival” a “new normal” for ordinary people. [14]14 “Artistic survival” here refers to the idea that ordinary people can engage in creative and expressive activities as a routine part of life, enabled by low-barrier AI tools. As a result, in terms of value creation, the content ecosystem of digital cyberspace is improved, the digital content economy develops healthily, and the value contribution of users’ unpaid labor becomes increasingly prominent.
(2) Human-Machine Collaboration Gives Rise to “Market Differentiation” in Crowdsourced Labor
Entering the stage of digital capitalism, a typical labor form in the global digital labor landscape is online crowdsourced labor, also known as “cloud labor.” Based on the level of professional skills required to complete digital tasks, crowdsourced labor is further subdivided into freelancers represented by Upwork and micro-labor represented by Amazon Mechanical Turk. In the online crowdsourcing economy, the “empowering the machine” effect of analytical AI is mainly reflected in breaking the temporal and spatial constraints of the labor market through algorithmic task assignment and algorithmic rewards and penalties, thereby either opening new channels for professionals to monetize their “cognitive surplus” or providing new employment opportunities for marginalized and disadvantaged groups.
With the accelerated development of embedded and plug-in applications of generative artificial intelligence, the online crowdsourcing labor market will undergo profound changes, and the employment circumstances and value contributions of digital laborers will also experience a clear “market differentiation.” This is primarily because crowdsourcing labor is essentially a form of cognitive labor, and its procedural, repetitive labor tasks will sooner or later be automated. Among these, crowdsourcing micro-labor mostly consists of low-threshold digital tasks, and digital capital will inevitably entrust them to the “magical tool for achieving goals”—intelligent machines. Existing research shows that, compared with manual annotation, ChatGPT’s automatic annotation of tweets (including relevance, stance, topic, and frame detection) is not only more accurate but also costs less than $0.003 per annotation—about 20 times cheaper than Amazon Mechanical Turk.[15]15 The original citation number (13) is retained as [15] to continue the author’s note sequence.
For freelancers with “unique skills,” although repetitive, rule-based, and highly predictable tasks such as writing, translation, graphic design, and code review will also shrink or even disappear, the labor returns for completing “one-of-a-kind” cognitive works will become more generous. In practice, AI large models generate a rich capability matrix, helping digital creators break through capacity constraints, thereby giving them more time and energy to engage in more imaginative and challenging digital labor. According to Accenture’s forecast, by 2030, 75% of knowledge workers worldwide will interact daily with applications, services, or agents supported by foundation models.[16]16 The original citation number (14) is retained as [16]. Furthermore, in human-machine dialogue, the vast knowledge content generated by intelligent machines under prompts and guidance is not without “insightful” or “creative inspiration” that broadens the mind. The result is that in the value production of digital capitalism, the upgrading of intelligent machines empowered by large models, on the one hand, deprives ordinary laborers engaged in “ghost work”[17]17 “Ghost work” refers to the hidden, often precarious labor behind AI systems, such as data labeling and content moderation, typically performed by crowdsourced workers. of job opportunities, and on the other hand, increases wealth-creation opportunities for “digital nomads” skilled in creativity.
(3) Human-Machine Collaboration Helps Improve the On-Demand Labor “Environment”
Entering the digital economy era, the gig economy has broken free from the constraints of time and space and developed rapidly, giving rise to on-demand labor based on mobile applications (apps). In essence, on the virtual production line meticulously crafted by digital capital, gig workers are merely mobile data points controlled by the platform system, constantly filling the gaps in “AI’s last mile.” From the perspective of human-machine relations, the technological empowerment of analytical AI, on the one hand, helps ordinary laborers achieve low-threshold rapid employment, to some extent promoting digital inclusion and employment equity; on the other hand, platform-based enterprises vigorously promote “the strictest algorithms,” deliberately stripping away “employer responsibilities,” plunging many gig workers into employment instability that exhausts both body and mind. This results in a recurrence of the scene Marx once described in the digital economy era: “the machine possesses the wonderful power of reducing human labor and making it more effective, yet it leads to hunger and excessive fatigue.”[18]18 The original citation number (16) is retained as [18]; the quote is from Marx’s *Capital*.
In recent years, promoting algorithmic goodness and safeguarding the labor rights of gig workers has increasingly become a social consensus. Under pressure from government regulation and social pressure, digital capital is also inclined to refine algorithm management through platform system improvements, in order to quell the discontent of digital laborers and consolidate the platform production system. The embedding of generative AI into platforms can shift the gig economy from human-machine confrontation to human-machine collaboration, thereby improving the on-demand labor experience and easing labor-capital contradictions. This is because the intelligent upgrade of platform digital customer service transforms from “cold” formulaic responses into “friendly and relaxed” chat dialogues, even allowing laborers to customize “intimate companions” or “AI assistants.” This upgrade, on the one hand, can create a more pleasant and humane digital labor environment for laborers, and on the other hand, can adapt to different scenarios, providing laborers with more personalized service prompts, process planning, and safety reminders in real time, thereby making the task completion process “effortless.” Additionally, as native applications of generative AI become increasingly abundant, laborers can also freely create “digital avatars” to maintain communication with multiple clients simultaneously, better catering to consumer preferences.
(4) Human-Machine Collaboration Promotes “Job Switching” in Employed Digital Labor
Under the platform production system, digital capital pushes flexible employment practices to the limit: on the one hand, through the construction of multi-sided market relations, it achieves “non-employment exploitation” of digital labor in the form of online crowdsourcing and outsourcing; on the other hand, digital capital owners spare no expense in recruiting global digital technology talent to engage in platform system infrastructure design, algorithm development, digital product R&D and operations, making them enterprise architects, algorithm engineers, data analysts, and operations engineers. These digital technology talents have multiple identities: they are both highly educated mental laborers and digital industrial workers, while also belonging to the middle- and high-income group.[19]19 The original citation number (17) is retained as [19]. Broadly speaking, in the application scenarios of analytical AI, the production contributions of these employed digital laborers are manifested in the data valorization chain of “analyzing data, discovering patterns, forming insights, and building predictions.”
With the accelerated arrival of the AI large model era, the automation of tasks in digital commodity production is accelerating and upgrading. Driven by generative AI technology, the work focus of tech geeks concentrated in leading platform enterprises will shift, and new job positions will emerge accordingly. Specifically, in terms of platform infrastructure construction, seeking new breakthroughs in chipset architecture, hardware innovation, and efficient algorithms has become a key task for core employees of digital technology giants; in AI large model R&D, model construction, pre-training, fine-tuning alignment, and inference deployment are closely linked, making algorithm engineers, prompt engineers, and other professions popular digital occupations; in vertical applications, tasks such as training, fine-tuning, pruning, and distillation of industry-specific models give rise to new digital labor occupations such as AI product managers, AI quality controllers, and AI ethics consultants. In short, focusing on the R&D and production of general-purpose intelligent machines is increasingly becoming the work norm for digital laborers.
III. Large Model Competition and New Trends in Digital Capital Accumulation
Marx pointed out: “A certain degree of capital accumulation appears as a condition for the specifically capitalist mode of production, and the specifically capitalist mode of production in turn reacts to accelerate capital accumulation.”[20]20 The original citation number (18) is retained as [20]; the quote is from Marx’s *Capital*. Entering the stage of digital capitalism, analytical AI drove the platform revolution, giving rise to and solidifying “data enclosure,” algorithmic autocracy, and platform monopoly, achieving accelerated accumulation of digital capital in an extremely short period. At present, with the upgrading, iteration, and accelerated implementation of generative AI, capitalist production has entered the era of AI large models. AI large models are technology-, capital-, and talent-intensive industries. As shown in Table 2 (omitted), large model competition solidifies the pattern of digital oligopoly, causing digital capitalist capital accumulation to exhibit a new trend of “intelligent computing monopoly.”
(1) Computing Power Competition Becomes a New Focus of Digital Capital Accumulation
Entering the digital economy era, data, computing power, and algorithms form a “trinity,” becoming necessary resources for digital technology giants to seek and consolidate platform monopoly. With the application of AI content generation technology in digital commodity production, digital platforms, which use advanced algorithms as competitive weapons, are accelerating their transformation into high-performance computing platforms. In the new round of resource competition among digital capital, influenced by factors such as the spread of platform production systems, the surge of open databases, and the application of synthetic data, the importance of data resources has begun to decline.[21]21 The original citation number (19) is retained as [21]. In contrast, creating foundation models is a complex, costly, and computationally intensive task; the computing power required to train top-tier AI models is growing exponentially.
Taking the AI language model GPT-3 as an example, this model has 175 billion parameters, uses a high-performance computing cluster composed of 10,000 V100 graphics processing units and 285,000 central processing units, takes 14.8 days for a single training session, and consumes a total computing power of approximately 3640 PF-days (i.e., if one trillion calculations were performed per second, it would take 3640 days). This means that in the digital productive forces revolution driven by generative AI technology, the importance of intelligent computing power for training, fine-tuning, and deploying large models has become sharply prominent. It can be said that competition over AI large models is essentially competition over computing power; whoever possesses abundant advanced computing power will likely win the large-model competition outright.
(II) Digital Oligopoly Competition Raises the Monopoly on Digitalized Means of Production to New Heights
The value movement of capitalism “presupposes the separation between the workers and the ownership of the conditions for the realization of their labor,” and “once capitalist production is on its feet, it not only maintains this separation but reproduces it on a constantly expanding scale.”(20) In terms of practical pathways, capital vigorously drives the machine revolution, using “objectified knowledge” to achieve the “deskilling” of labor and the expropriative appropriation of society’s “general intellect.” Entering the stage of digital capitalism, the establishment and consolidation of the platform production system have pushed the monopoly on digitalized means of production to new heights.
At present, large models are competing like a hundred boats racing, a lively scene, but the engineering combination of “big data + large computing power + strong algorithms” means that the real players are few and far between. “Except for the world’s top enterprises, almost no organization can complete this task on its own; it exceeds the capabilities and methods at their disposal.”(21) Therefore, although “AI startups” are everywhere, they can only become “barnacles on the hull” of large tech companies.(22)
To seize business opportunities in the AI “arms race,” digital oligarchs are competing to restructure their platform ecosystems. On the one hand, digital oligarchs apply generative AI to every product, service, and business process they operate. In March 2023, Microsoft integrated generative AI technology into its product matrix and launched Microsoft 365 Copilot, which can not only directly generate Word, PPT, and Excel spreadsheets based on users’ brief instructions but also help users complete tasks such as summarizing meeting notes and processing emails. Google followed closely, integrating the upgraded Bard into its own office software “family bucket” and creating an office assistant called “Duet AI.” On the other hand, by creating super apps for generative AI applications, digital oligarchs embed AI large models as core infrastructure into numerous industries such as healthcare, medicine, education, logistics, credit, and entertainment. As a result, digital capital not only further strengthens its domination and control over the platform ecosystem but also, through oligopolistic possession of cognitive means of production, pushes the monopoly on means of production that sustains the capitalist mode of production to its extreme. The outcome is that, from the perspective of economic development stages, digital capitalism is accelerating its evolution toward “AI capitalism,” and the dependence of the entire society’s production and daily life on platforms will grow day by day.
(III) Large Models Create a “Surplus Proletariat”
Under the capitalist mode of production, “as soon as the means of labor appears as a machine, it immediately becomes a competitor of the worker himself.”(23) During the period of industrial capitalism, the capitalist machine revolution went through stages of steam power, electrification, and informatization; the devaluation and replacement of labor by the machine (system) has always been a core issue of capital’s domination over labor. But overall, technological progress continuously spawned new job positions and new forms of labor, so that the development of the capitalist relative surplus population never spiraled “out of control.”
After the advent of AI technology, the effects of “labor enhancement” and “labor substitution” have coexisted. At present, with the accelerated commercial application and industrial development of generative AI technology, the technological unemployment triggered by “machines replacing humans” seems to be taking on an overwhelming momentum. In the short term, although, as mentioned earlier, the technological empowerment of generative AI and human-machine collaboration have generally promoted the high-level evolution of digital labor, it must also be recognized that a large number of ordinary workers, unable to adapt to the accelerated changes in digital technology, have fallen into becoming a “surplus proletariat.” In the long run, even setting aside discussions of “superintelligence,” “social exclusion,” and “useless class,” under the onslaught of rapidly advancing generative AI technology, human-specific tasks such as knowledge creation are being continuously encroached upon by increasingly powerful intelligent machines. As some scholars have noted, generative AI, “while becoming a tool for labor, may also become a ‘monster’ that ‘devours’ people’s digital labor.”(24) The result is that intelligent production sharpens the problem of “technological unemployment,” placing ordinary workers like the “digital poor” in a more challenging and hopeless situation,(25) and the production order of digital capitalism will face a major shock.
IV. AI Technology Acceleration and New Variables in the Capitalist Production Order
“Constant revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones.”(26) From the perspective of the capitalist application of science and technology, “the impact of technological acceleration on social reality is undoubtedly enormous.”(27) Entering the digital economy era, the progress of digital technology, driven by capital, exhibits a “flywheel effect,” making the capitalist production order more full of variables, turbulence, and even crisis. At present, the emergence and iteration of generative AI make the acceleration of capitalist technology even more unstoppable; digital capital pursues “artificial general intelligence,” but this also brings new variables to the capitalist production order.
(I) AI Technology Acceleration Constrains Digital Capital’s “Spatio-Temporal Fix”
Marx pointed out that capital, on the one hand, “strives to reduce labor time to a minimum, while on the other hand it makes labor time the sole measure and source of wealth.”(28) Since the First Industrial Revolution, capital has successfully absorbed a great deal of “living labor” through repeated “spatio-temporal fixes” to offset the impact on capital’s rule of the opposing development between the “expansion of the wealth system” and the “contraction of the value system.” Entering the digital economy era, digital capital has constructed a platform production system, greatly expanding capital’s capacity for “spatio-temporal fixes.” To sum up, digital capital disciplines digital labor to achieve the absorption of “living labor” on a larger scale; at the same time, digital capital promotes “digital survival” to more thoroughly realize the expropriation of society’s “general intellect.”(29)
At present, the accelerated application of generative AI technology releases enormous digital productive forces, creating an abundant outpouring of digital wealth with astonishing efficiency; but at the same time, it achieves a more thorough replacement of living labor by “dead labor” at an unimaginable speed. Thus, paradoxically, the more developed the productive forces of digital capitalism, the more inescapable the nightmare of the “approaching singularity” in the value movement of capital becomes. Moreover, under the coercive law of competition, as the application of AI large models becomes low-code and democratized, the organic composition of capital in the global knowledge industry accelerates toward convergence, and digital capital’s capacity for “spatio-temporal fixes”—building a “digital empire” and extracting and transferring surplus value—is continuously eroded. The result is that digital capital, deeply mired in the AI-driven digital vortex, is losing its lifeblood—its ability to “suck living labor”—precisely through its infatuation with digital technology.
(II) AI Technology Acceleration Impacts the Realization of the Value of Knowledge Commodities
As is well known, under market economy conditions, knowledge commodities such as software, databases, and product designs exhibit a significant zero-marginal-cost characteristic, which makes their value realization face more variables. The creation of the capitalist intellectual property system effectively blocks various forces of “anti-value” and thus plays a key role in maintaining the capitalist production order. Entering the era of the digital economy, the self-expansion of digital capital presupposes the deliberate dissolution of individual intellectual property rights in user-generated content. The real-time, personalized, and contextualized nature of digital commodity production allows digital capital to reap huge profits even without the shelter of the copyright system. But overall, even with the support of analytical artificial intelligence technology, digital capital has not broken through the existing interest pattern to replicate “de-copyrighting” for professionally generated content, and thus has not yet fundamentally impacted the value realization of capitalist knowledge commodities.
In contrast, the widespread adoption of generative artificial intelligence is impacting the existing capitalist copyright law system with the speed of a thunderbolt. This is because AI large models, relying on their increasingly powerful learning capabilities, have almost netted and devoured all knowledge achievements in human history, producing an unlimited quantity of “non-real yet seemingly real” AI-generated content with ultra-high efficiency. For example, a human illustrator needs at least 2–3 days to complete a single work, while an intelligent drawing tool like Midjourney can create four works in just 10 seconds. Faced with the “ocean of machine text” [30]30 The reference “[28]” is from Marx, *Grundrisse*, on capital’s contradictory relation to labor time. produced by AI large models that is both familiar and seemingly plausible yet specious, the existing capitalist intellectual property system finds itself powerless or even at a loss in terms of tracing origins and confirming rights, as well as identifying infringement. Generative artificial intelligence can also create AI-version cloned characters through style imitation, voice synthesis, and posture synthesis, accumulating users and harvesting traffic in an extremely short time with a dazzling and creative supply of digital content. Thus, under the impact of AI’s massive imitation and traffic diversion, the intellectual property value of existing rights holders and real content producers is greatly diluted.
(III) AI Technology Accelerates and Intensifies Government-Enterprise Power Conflicts
Power is based on control over information and its dissemination. [31]31 The reference “[29]” refers to digital capital’s dual strategies of disciplining labor and expropriating the general intellect. Entering the era of the digital economy, digital capital, relying on increasingly sophisticated algorithmic systems, accumulates platform power and builds a “digital empire.” Practice shows that with the formation and consolidation of platform monopolies, the exercise of digital capital’s power is no longer confined to the field of market exchange but penetrates every aspect of human production and life through digital surveillance and information manipulation, quietly playing the role of a “private government,” becoming a veritable “Leviathan” in the platform society. “Platform companies, as power subjects, have gradually come to the forefront, dissolving and reconstructing the state-led power structure, accelerating the flow of power from the state to the market.” [32]32 Huang Zaisheng, “The Power Logic of Digital Capital: A Political Economy Critique of the Platform,” *Economist*, no. 8 (2022), p. 30. [This is a reference to the source of the quotation in the text; the note explains the citation rather than a term.] Therefore, once the bourgeois government becomes aware of the “power usurpation” inadvertently achieved by digital oligarchs, it will become doubly vigilant and prepare to strike back. Fundamentally, in the game between government and enterprises under digital capitalism, the acquisition of power by digital capital originates from the infrastructuralization of digital media. Since the advent of the platform revolution, with the support of analytical artificial intelligence applications, the generation of digital capital’s power has stemmed from linking multi-sided market supply and demand and controlling the precise distribution of digital content. Furthermore, the influence of digital capital’s power is manifested in shaping the online behavior of market entities through platform “empowerment” and affecting user experience and psychological cognition through personalized push notifications. Moreover, the active users subservient to the “digital empire” number in the hundreds of millions, willingly becoming “digital sharecroppers” [33]33 “Digital sharecroppers” is a term used by critical scholars to describe users who generate value for digital platforms through their unpaid labor (e.g., creating content, providing data) while receiving little in return, analogous to historical sharecroppers who worked land owned by others., which means that the “governmentalization” of digital capital’s private power cannot be underestimated.
Practice shows that for the capitalist production order to maintain “smooth” operation, it is inseparable from the government’s use of public power to construct a “social embeddedness” mechanism to ease labor-capital contradictions. Currently, with the accelerated deployment of generative artificial intelligence, digital capital, by redefining user experience and reshaping the platform service ecosystem, has greatly consolidated the power base of the “digital empire.” More critically, digital capital can not only firmly control the diffusion of knowledge-based content through intelligent communication but also directly acquire the “new power” of value shaping and concept production. That is, digital capital “sets its own formats, standards, and value orientations for knowledge production through model design and corpus selection, becoming the controller of knowledge production.” [34]34 Fang Xingdong, “The Knowledge Production Revolution Triggered by ChatGPT,” *Exploration and Contention*, no. 3 (2023), p. 47. [This is a reference to the source of the quotation in the text.] Thus, digital capital, through the natural and smooth output of AI-generated content, cleverly infuses the “private goods” of profit-seeking concepts, while the masses addicted to the AI experience are manipulated and persuaded without being aware of it. As some scholars have pointed out: “Once the two major capabilities of AI in content production and content distribution form a closed loop, its dominance over information flow and control over consumers will be immensely powerful.” [35]35 “The Great AI Divide: The Battle for the Next Generation of the Internet Has Begun,” *Caijing*, no. 5 (2023), p. 48. [This is a reference to the source of the quotation in the text.] In this way, digital capital can provide information and knowledge in a hyper-personalized manner, monopolizing the power of interpretation and discourse, reshaping the capitalist knowledge order, thereby encroaching on the ideological power of the bourgeois state, emptying the government’s “toolbox” for social soft governance, and threatening the capitalist political order. For this reason, it is only to be expected that the struggle for influence between digital capitalist government and enterprises is intensifying.
V. Conclusion
With the upgrading, iteration, and daily application of generative artificial intelligence such as GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude, human production and life have entered the era of AI large models, and the production process and production relations of digital capitalism are undergoing revolutionary and transformative changes. Overall, the technical deployment and production operation of generative artificial intelligence are initiating a new industrial revolution, and the spiritual production of digital capitalism has entered a new stage of “hyper-personalized customization and one-click generation.” At the same time, the arrival of the AI large model era has accelerated the democratization of AI technology, and the human-machine relationship under digital capitalism is undergoing complex and frequent changes. However, the increasing “human-like intelligence” and autonomy of intelligent machines have not ended digital labor; on the contrary, human-machine collaboration frees people from repetitive and tedious labor tasks, allowing them to focus on more creative work. Furthermore, under “Silicon Valley private ownership,” generative artificial intelligence, on the one hand, efficiently creates a boom in digital wealth, while on the other hand, it exacerbates platform monopolies, relative surplus population, and government-enterprise power conflicts, thereby making the inherent contradictions of the value movement of digital capitalism increasingly difficult to reconcile. Only by transcending the logic of capital, thoroughly transforming the digital capitalist platform system, and exploring the construction of digital socialism can AI universal benefit and digital labor liberation be truly realized.
