The Confirmation of the Essence of Artificial Intelligence from the Perspective of Historical Materialism and Its Significance
Marx’s thought on technology provides the fundamental guidance for scientifically understanding the essential attributes and socio-historical effects of artificial intelligence, and for correctly handling the relationship between artificial intelligence and ideological and political education. As a key driving force and strategic technology of the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, artificial intelligence profoundly affects the threefold socio-historical relationships between humans and nature, between humans and humans, and between humans and themselves, and has gradually evolved into a unity of “technical means,” “infrastructure,” and “civilizational marker.” For ideological and political education, artificial intelligence, as an endogenous force, is embedded in and influences its foundational basis, fundamental contradictions, and practical forms. Promoting the deep integration of artificial intelligence and ideological and political education is an inherent requirement and rational choice that follows the laws of technological change and extricates itself from the paradox of technological tools and the worry of technological domination. This integration deeply contains the symbiotic relationship and interactive logic of “technology–ideological and political education,” which is centrally manifested in two interconnected and mutually reinforcing processes and mechanisms: “the ideological and political education-ization of artificial intelligence” and “the artificial intelligence-ization of ideological and political education.”

I. Marx’s Dialectical Reflection on the Essence of Humanity
An inquiry into the essence of artificial intelligence involves the question of the mode of thinking. As a “new thing” brought about by the development of modern technology, AI shares both commonalities and differences with other natural objects and artifacts. It is necessary to return to the history of thought, especially historical materialism, to seek references and insights for questioning its essence. Reflection on the essence of things is not only a core issue of traditional rational metaphysics but also profoundly influences the emergence and development of later natural sciences. It is a “natural tendency” inevitably arising from humanity’s use of reason to pursue truth and to understand the world in the most thorough and profound sense. In the history of thought, many thinkers have approached the essence of things in different ways, and the revelations of the essence of the same thing often present different or even opposite answers. From focusing on the universal attributes of similar things, to attending to the special attributes that distinguish one thing from others, and then to historically understanding the generation of these special attributes, ultimately penetrating into the attribute differences among similar things—this constitutes the evolutionary thread of the “view of essence” within the entire history of Western thought. Marx’s new materialist worldview brought about a major transformative significance in the mode of thinking about the essence of things in modern Western intellectual history. It demonstrates powerful explanatory and transformative force in addressing practical issues. To reflect on the essence of AI, it is necessary to transcend the theoretical shackles of idealism and old materialism and fundamentally draw on Marx’s historical and concrete way of thinking about the essence of things.
In the development of the history of Western philosophy, thinkers generally grasped essence from the level of substance, holding that essence is the absolute existence hidden behind phenomena, pointing to the internal basis by which a thing becomes itself. Some thinkers, dissatisfied with merely describing external phenomena, delved more deeply into what “is” behind the ever-changing appearances of things. This impulse of questioning initiated humanity’s understanding of the essence of things. There are clear divergences in the paths by which thinkers have questioned the “essence” of things. In Plato’s scheme dividing the supersensible world from the sensible world, the Ideas in the supersensible world are regarded as “the true and only reality,” while individual things in the sensible world obtain their basis for existence only by “participating” in the Ideas. This means that the essence of things lies outside the things themselves. Aristotle defined essence as “what it was to be,” affirming the essential existence of concrete things and attributing the differences between things to the “what it is” of concrete things. Following Plato and Aristotle’s reflections on essence and substance, later Western philosophers’ understanding of essence can generally be divided into two schools: first, the universal view of essence, which tends to reduce essence to the common attributes shared by similar things. For example, in the political philosophy and theories of human nature of Hobbes and Spinoza, the “actual essence” of humanity is located in the natural tendency to preserve oneself, which is common to all individuals, including humans. Second, the special view of essence, which tends to regard the special attributes of one thing relative to other things as its essence. For instance, when Feuerbach understood the essence of humanity, he reflected on “what, after all, is the essential difference between humans and animals? The simplest, most general, and most popular answer to this question is: consciousness,” proposing that “reason, love, and willpower” are the highest powers, the absolute essence of humanity, and the purpose of human existence. The shift in perspective from emphasizing commonality to focusing on individuality reflects philosophy’s deepening inquiry into the essence of things, moving toward their internal connections.
Marx’s reflection on the essence of things, especially the essence of humanity, has a profound basis in the history of thought, integrating the explorations of traditional thinkers concerning universal essence and special essence. In *Capital*, when criticizing the principle of utility of Bentham and others, Marx points out: “If we want to apply this principle to humans, and to evaluate all human actions, movements, relations, etc., according to the principle of utility, we must first study human nature in general, and then study the human nature that has historically changed in each epoch.” Marx’s reflection on the essence of humanity has two aspects: first, it points to the nature common to all humans, i.e., the general essence of humanity; second, it points to the essence shaped by the social environment of different historical periods, i.e., the special essence of humanity. These two modes of thinking originate from Marx’s critical inheritance of the theoretical achievements of German classical philosophy on the issue of essence, manifesting as Marx’s process of seeking the essence of humanity from abstract generality to concrete reality.
In the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844*, Marx focuses on the generic “species” difference between humans and animals to locate the “species-essence” of humans, and further inquires into the question of the genesis of this “species-essence.” Marx affirms and accepts Feuerbach’s view that the uniqueness of human existence lies precisely in its “freedom” and “consciousness,” holding that “free, conscious activity is precisely the species-characteristic of human beings,” and considers the question of the human species-essence or species-characteristic from two aspects: first, “man treats himself as a universal, and therefore a free being,” turning nature into his own inorganic body, unlike animals which merely cling to nature within a narrow sphere; second, he proposes that “conscious life-activity directly distinguishes man from animal life-activity,” where “conscious” means “making his life-activity itself an object of his will and of his consciousness.” Unlike Feuerbach, Marx realizes that the species-characteristic of “freedom” and “consciousness” is still a superficial distinction perceived through “sensuous intuition,” and that Feuerbach’s doctrine of “species-essence” remains at the level of general reflection. Marx “inverts” Feuerbachian thinking: on the basis of regarding “free, conscious life-activity” as the fundamental characteristic of human activity and as the essential distinction between humans and animals, he proposes that “it is precisely because man is a species-being that he is a conscious being,” and that “it is in his practical creation of an objective world, in his working-over of inorganic nature, that man proves himself a conscious species-being.” As a “species,” humans are not merely a biological classification; this concept further constitutes a mode of existence that distinguishes humans from other animals. It is precisely through production and life within the “species” that humans differentiate themselves from other animals. This further raises the theoretical question of how the human “species-essence” is generated in “species-life.”
Marx’s dialectical critique of the idealist conception of history opened up a socio-historical perspective for answering the question of the genesis of the human “species-essence.” On the basis of grasping, through horizontal comparative thinking, that “freedom” and “consciousness” constitute the two major characteristics of activity that distinguish humans from animals, Hegel’s mode of thinking, with “historical sense” as its core, provided Marx with “a starting point for his logical method.” [1]1 This refers to Hegel’s dialectical method, which emphasizes process, development, and contradiction, and which Marx critically appropriated while rejecting its idealist framework. Marx critically utilized Hegel’s theoretical resource of “conceiving the self-creation of man as a process… conceiving objective man, true man because real man, as the result of his own labor,” and, with a processual perspective, fully grasped that the “species-essence” difference between humans and animals is produced by human historical labor. However, unlike Hegel, who could only abstractly understand the processual and historical nature of labor, Marx took material productive labor as the foundation for the emergence, existence, and development of humanity and its history. Through attention to actual labor, Marx established a specific perspective for grasping the essence of humans through the historical changes in the form of labor. “As individuals express their life, so they are. What they are, therefore, coincides with their production—both with what they produce and with how they produce.” Actual productive activity, in the dimension of “how they produce,” inherently contains genuine historical change, which is manifested in humans’ manufacture and use of tools of production. Animals can only directly use their own physiological organs to obtain ready-made material resources from nature, whereas humans can use tools they themselves manufacture to alter the material form of nature, and through the continuous improvement of tools, they accomplish the historical reconstruction of their own life and their own essence.
The establishment of Marx’s new materialist worldview opened up a concrete way of understanding the essence of humans, advancing the judgment of the essence of humans to the analysis of individual differences among “real individuals.” Marx points out that the merit of Feuerbach’s materialism lies in “resolving the religious world into its secular basis” and “resolving the essence of religion into the essence of man.” However, because Feuerbach failed to penetrate the contradictions and divisions within secular society itself, he could only mistakenly regard “religious sentiment” as something common and inherent to all humans, could only understand humans in the sense of abstract, isolated individuals, and could only understand the essence of humans in the sense of a “species” that is an “internal, dumb generality which naturally unites the many individuals.” [2]2 This is a direct quotation from Marx’s *Theses on Feuerbach* (1845), where he critiques Feuerbach’s abstract and ahistorical conception of human nature. This critique of Feuerbach enabled Marx to establish a concrete mode of thinking that further explores individual differences among things of the same kind: the essence of humans is manifested not only in the comparison of differences between humans and animals, but also in the differences between real humans themselves, and in the ways different individuals produce their own material life. “The essence of man is no abstraction inherent in each single individual. In its actuality it is the ensemble of the social relations.” [3]3 This is the famous sixth thesis on Feuerbach, which defines human essence as the ensemble of social relations, a cornerstone of historical materialism. This is the inevitable conclusion Marx drew from examining the sociality and historicity of human productive labor through the lens of historical materialism.
By moving from a general, species-level distinction between humans and animals to a historical understanding of the causes of the differences between humans and animals, and to a concrete understanding of the differences between real individuals, Marx inquires into the question of the essence of humans from the perspective of the unity of universality and particularity, forming a dialectical mode of thinking for grasping the essence of humans. This provides a scientific and rational theoretical tool for reflecting on and examining the essence of things. Faced with the rapidly developing technology of artificial intelligence, contemporary Chinese philosophical and social science workers should absorb Marx’s methodological approach to contemplating the essence of humans from the height of historical materialism. They must grasp the “species-essence” of this “human-like” entity [4]4 The Chinese term “类人存在物” (lèirén cúnzàiwù) literally means “human-like being” or “humanoid entity,” used here to describe AI as an entity that resembles humans in certain functions but is fundamentally different in essence. both from the differences between AI and humans and other beings, and understand the historical genesis and social effects of AI from the perspective of actual productive activity.
II. The Confirmation of the Essential Attributes of Artificial Intelligence from the Perspective of Historical Materialism
Marx’s reflection on the essence of humans from the perspective of the unity of universality and particularity provides a theoretical reference for grasping the “species-essence” and actual essence of artificial intelligence. To consider the essence of AI based on historical materialism, one cannot presuppose that AI possesses the same subject status and essence as humans. Instead, one must adopt a dialectical and historical perspective to conduct a premise-based examination and comprehensive analysis. Specifically, it is necessary to answer the following three questions: First, what is the internal basis that distinguishes AI from other beings, i.e., the question of the essential difference between AI and humans and other beings? Second, how does this basis make AI what it is, i.e., the question of the historical genesis of the essence of AI? Third, what are the qualitative manifestations of the existing essence of AI and its genesis in actual material productive life, i.e., the question of the actual attributes of AI?
First, in the sense of “species-essence,” artificial intelligence, as the “brain” of the automated machine system, is the externalization of human knowledge and rational capacity. Drawing on Marx’s reflections on the “species-essence” of humanity, the inquiry into the “species-essence” of artificial intelligence can be divided into two steps: first, answering the question “what is artificial intelligence,” and second, pursuing the inner basis that makes this determination and definition valid. Artificial intelligence developed in the latter half of the 20th century, built on the foundation of computer science and related technologies. As one of the crystallizations of computer science, artificial intelligence’s simulation of human intelligence has undergone three stages—“formalization,” “empiricization,” and “rationalization”—that is, simulating respectively the forms of human thought, human experience, and human reason. “Artificial” is the core characteristic of artificial intelligence compared with other natural existents; whereas other non-human existents in nature are the “absolute other” of humanity, artificial intelligence is the “objectified other.” It can be said that artificial intelligence is precisely “a ‘personified operational procedure’ and ‘technical artifact’ that is ‘data-based and system-oriented,’” [5]5 Sun Wei, “The Essence of Artificial Intelligence and the ‘Humanization’ of Its Development,” *Social Science Front*, no. 3 (2023): 27. a technical tool of intelligence created artificially. Starting from the theoretical implications of artificial intelligence, we can see that artificial intelligence “first concerns the relationship between ‘artificial’ and ‘intelligence.’ ‘Artificial’ is relative to ‘natural,’ while ‘intelligence’ is related to rational capacity; taken together, artificial intelligence involves non-natural rational capacity.” [6]6 Sun Wei, “The Essence of Artificial Intelligence and the ‘Humanization’ of Its Development,” 27. Artificial intelligence points not only to the “artificiality” of the intelligent thing but also to the “intelligence” of the artifact. The technical artifact only describes the “species-essence” of artificial intelligence in the sense of an entity-like result; we must further investigate the question of the essence of artificial intelligence’s “intelligence.” Just as Heidegger pointed out: “Technology is not equivalent to the essence of technology… Similarly, the essence of technology is by no means anything technological.” [7]7 Martin Heidegger, “The Question Concerning Technology,” in *Selected Works of Martin Heidegger*, vol. 2, trans. Sun Zhouxing (Shanghai: Shanghai Joint Publishing Press, 1996), 924. This path of external inquiry means that one cannot stop at a judgment of “species-essence” defined by genus and specific difference; one must continue to inquire into the “enframing” [Gestell] support behind it, and this precisely aligns with Marx’s mode of thinking that pursues the historical genesis of “species-essence”—that is, the essence of humanity lies not in humans being primates, nor even merely in humans being purposeful and conscious animals, but in human practical activity achieving the unity of changing the natural environment and changing oneself. Marx pointed out: “Nature does not construct any machines… They are the products of human industry; natural material transformed into organs of the human will over nature, or of human participation in nature. They are organs of the human brain, created by the human hand; the power of knowledge, objectified.” [8]8 Karl Marx, “The Fragment on Machines,” in *Marx and Engels Collected Works*, vol. 31 (Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1998), 102. The “intelligence” of artificial intelligence is rooted in the imitation of human rational capacity. If traditional automated machines are, for humans, “organs of the human will over nature” that act according to human commands, then artificial intelligence is precisely the command system on which the functioning of these organs depends—the externalization of human knowledge and rational capacity. If traditional computers are an extension of the human brain organ, then artificial intelligence is an extension of human “brainpower.” Marx once called the automated machine system “value existing for itself.” [9]9 Karl Marx, “The Fragment on Machines,” 102. If the traditional machine system is the automated operation of human objectified labor, then the emergence of artificial intelligence provides a “self-organizing program” for this “value existing for itself.” Thus it can be seen that artificial intelligence, at the level of “imitation,” “partakes of” the implications of the human “species-essence.”
Second, the historical genesis of artificial intelligence represents both the inevitable trend of the development of productive forces and a tool for the automation of contemporary human mental labor. From a broad historical perspective, the progression of human production activities from handicraft to mechanization to automation is the inevitable evolution of productive forces, especially of the means of production. Although in Marx’s historical era the automation of the production process was only beginning to emerge, Marx already engaged in profound reflection on the development of the machine system, providing a “key” and methodological guidance for penetrating the historical genesis of artificial intelligence. Marx pointed out: “Simple tools; accumulation of tools; composite tools; tools driven solely by human power, i.e., tools driven by humans; tools driven by natural forces; machines; a machine system with a single motor; a machine system with an automatic motor—this is the process of the development of machines.” [10]10 Karl Marx, *Capital*, vol. 1, in *Marx and Engels Collected Works*, vol. 44 (Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 2001), 429. Artificial intelligence is precisely a further development of the automated machine system that Marx observed; it arises from the two-way interaction between humans and the world realized through human practical activity, and is the newest component of the “humanized world.” The process of the emergence and development of artificial intelligence is a process in which the essential powers of humanity are continuously and newly confirmed through externalization, proving that in transforming nature, humans not only obtain means of subsistence and physical tools for production but also obtain mental tools for further production activities. Just as the development from traditional hand tools to automated machines realized the automation of human physical labor, the development from traditional computers to artificial intelligence has, to a certain extent, realized the automation of part of human mental labor. The emergence of artificial intelligence is not a purely technological phenomenon but is rooted in human material practical activity; it is a necessary link in the sequence of the development of productive forces. It marks a epoch-making node in the process of objectified labor where humans systematically externalize and instrumentalize their own subjective cognitive structures and functions, and is the inevitable extension and profound qualitative change in the logic of the evolution of the machine system toward a “machine system with an automatic motor” as revealed by Marx. As an objectified and objectified means of production, artificial intelligence confirms Marx’s profound insight that the essential powers of humanity are continuously confirmed and expanded through objectification. Humans not only create material tools to extend their physical strength in transforming nature but also, in the process of understanding and transforming their own cognitive structures, create intelligent tools that partially replace mental labor. The philosophical implication of the automation of mental labor lies in its truly touching upon the transformation of the essence of labor and the reshaping of human subjectivity. The emergence of artificial intelligence is not only a push forward in the liberation of human physical labor but also a potential historical sublation of the alienated forms of cognitive labor. When repetitive, routinized, and primary cognitive activities based on massive information processing are undertaken or replaced by automated tools, the human subject achieves a considerable degree of liberation. Marx’s profound critique of the application of the machine system under capitalism shows that there is a complex tension between the progressiveness of technological forms and the social relational forms in which they are embedded. The revolutionary significance of artificial intelligence far exceeds the enhancement of tool efficiency; as a confirmation of the essential powers of humanity at the level of cognition and conception, it is a new milestone in the process of the “humanized world.” The historical value of artificial intelligence lies not only in its instrumental implication of liberating human physical labor but also in its serving the fundamental value-oriented purpose of the comprehensive development and free liberation of human subjectivity. Examining the genesis and development of artificial intelligence from the perspective of productive forces embodies the unity of “conformity to laws” and “conformity to purposes,” pointing to the evolution of the mental tools on which human production activities depend. In the era of artificial intelligence, humanity should deeply contemplate the dialectical relationship between technology and humans, instrumental rationality and value rationality, and the logic of efficiency and the logic of liberation, and, entering the critical theoretical horizon provided by historical materialism, continuously engage in the active shaping and value guidance of artificial intelligence technology.
Third, compared with human beings who are engaged in actual material production and life, artificial intelligence embodies a unity of transcendence and non-transcendence; it can never be completely equated with human intelligence and can only be defined as a “human-like” entity lacking perceptual capacity and practical purpose. Whether artificial intelligence can acquire self-consciousness and ultimately surpass human intelligence has long been a concern of both academia and the general public. Artificial intelligence exhibits transcendence over individual human intelligence in specialized and data-driven fields—a conclusion drawn from empirical phenomena such as human-machine competitions—but this does not indicate that AI surpasses humans in all dimensions. When comparing the relationship between artificial intelligence and human intelligence, the individual human and humanity as a whole constitute two distinct dimensions. AI is transcendent compared with individuals in some areas, but it is non-transcendent compared with humanity as a whole. AI itself is an information storage and integrated invocation of the overall knowledge of humanity. This means that even if an AI robot has an individual appearance, it contains human information existing as a whole. All seemingly individual competitions between a single person and a single robot are, in essence, competitions between an individual human and “humanity as a whole.” Although contemporary AI is evolving in a so-called “generative” direction, seemingly possessing a certain capacity for autonomous learning and improvement, and exhibiting computational and decision-making abilities highly similar to human intelligence, these abilities are ultimately an imitation and one-sided enhancement of human rational thinking capacity. In the following two senses, AI and human intelligence are fundamentally different, revealing AI’s non-transcendence: First, as an “extension of human brainpower” and an externalization of human rational capacity, AI lacks the irrational factors rooted in the life activities of human intelligence. The generation of human intelligence takes complex physical survival needs as its real premise. It is precisely in the perceptual activities of satisfying their own needs that humans consciously and purposefully realize material and information exchanges with nature, further promoting the development of human physical strength and intelligence. Human reflection on the laws of the world and related knowledge production are inevitably constrained by their own life experiences, but these constraints themselves constitute the prerequisite conditions for the emergence of human intelligence. Lacking such life experience, AI’s imitation of human intelligence is limited to a powerful deduction of human concepts, judgments, and reasoning abilities, and cannot give rise to a “self” centered on survival needs. Second, AI does not possess practicality, and therefore cannot have the possibility of generating true intelligence. From the perspective of historical materialism, consciousness itself has no mysterious internal mechanism; it arises only through the objectifying relationship between humans and the perceptual world. “The ideal is nothing else than the material world reflected by the human mind, and translated into forms of thought.” [11]11 Karl Marx, *Capital*, Vol. 1, Afterword to the Second Edition. [Translator’s note: This is a standard Marx citation; the English rendering follows the standard translation.] Although some argue that, compared with traditional automated machines, intelligent robots have a tactile sense of environmental objects like natural persons, and can even temporarily and autonomously adjust based on changes in environmental data, as if possessing self-consciousness independent of human control, strictly speaking, practical activity is perceptual activity, but not all perceptual activity can be regarded as practice. The most fundamental hallmark of practice lies in “revolutionarily” changing the environment to meet the needs of the subject. In the case of real human subjects, this is manifested as “men, producing their means of subsistence, indirectly produce their actual material life itself.” [12]12 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, *The German Ideology*. [Translator’s note: Standard Marx citation.] For AI such as autonomous driving and other systems that recognize the state of the physical world, although they simultaneously simulate human sensory capacities, process logical relationships between pieces of information, and respond to external perceptual facts, this ability is ultimately a reduction of perceptual information. It cannot, like human practical activity, verify the truth or falsity of factual propositions, nor does it involve a purposeful, bidirectional interactive relationship based on the subject’s own needs.
To think historically and concretely about the essence of artificial intelligence within the practical relationship between real humans and the world is an important way to grasp the contemporary era through historical materialism. As a “technical artifact” created by humans, AI belongs to the “organs through which humans realize their will in nature.” [13]13 Karl Marx, *Capital*, Vol. 1, Ch. 13, “Machinery and Large-Scale Industry.” [Translator’s note: Standard Marx citation; the phrase “organs of the human will in nature” appears in this context.] But this “organ” has not gained independence from humans; rather, it is born from the revolutionary practical activity of humans transforming nature, fundamentally pointing to the objectified labor of human labor power, and is a confirmation of the essential power of humans. As a collection of the overall knowledge system of humanity, AI exhibits a powerful transcendence compared with individual rationality, but it lacks the most basic life experience and practical capacity on which human intelligence depends for its generation. Therefore, it is always only a one-sided enhancement of human rational capacity, cannot fundamentally surpass human intelligence, and is essentially distinct from human intelligence.
III. The Contemporary Significance of Confirming the Essential Attributes of Artificial Intelligence
As the core of a new round of technological revolution, artificial intelligence not only challenges traditional social norms and ethical rules but also continuously challenges human self-cognition, shaping a new era of artificial intelligence. Faced with such profound technological change and the accompanying great social transformation, “it is necessary to deeply understand the great significance of accelerating the development of a new generation of artificial intelligence, strengthen leadership, make good plans, clarify tasks, consolidate the foundation, promote its deep integration with economic and social development, and promote the healthy development of China’s new generation of artificial intelligence.” [14]14 Xi Jinping, “Speech at the Collective Study Session of the Political Bureau of the 19th CPC Central Committee on the Development Status and Trends of Artificial Intelligence,” October 31, 2018. [Translator’s note: This is a standard citation of a speech by Xi Jinping.] Historical materialism still provides a level of thought that penetrates the essence of history for understanding the contemporary world; it is the theoretical basis for discerning the essence of artificial intelligence and even the “spirit of the times” of the entire era of artificial intelligence. Grasping the essence of artificial intelligence with reference to the mode of thinking of historical materialism helps to comprehensively grasp the practical significance and historical limitations of AI, and to dialectically respond to the contemporary challenges of AI.
Grasping the essence of artificial intelligence in its general distinction from humans and other existing things is conducive to a dialectical view of the alienating effects and liberating potential of AI. The development of AI and its application in the field of social production not only has positive significance for improving production efficiency and upgrading industrial structure, but may also revolutionarily influence and change the mode of human labor. Marx’s judgment on the difference between the system of machinery and traditional tools provides a reference for understanding the revolutionary significance of AI. Marx proposed: “The worker makes use of the tool as an organ, endowing it with a soul through his own skill and activity, so that the ability to master the tool depends on the worker’s craftsmanship. In contrast, the machine replaces the worker in possessing skill and strength; it is itself the skilled craftsman, possessing its own soul through the mechanical laws that operate within it.” [15]15 Karl Marx, *Capital*, Volume 1, Chapter 13, Section 1. [Translator’s note: The quotation is a paraphrase of Marx’s discussion of the difference between tools and machines.] The system of machinery does not, like traditional labor tools, play an intermediary role in the worker’s labor; on the contrary, it is the worker who plays an intermediary role in the self-operation of the system of machinery. This reversal of relations brings about two consequences: First, in a realistic sense, the intervention of AI in the field of social production does not automatically bring about the realization of the liberation of labor. Marx pointed out that under the conditions of capitalist society, due to the alienation of the worker from labor, the object of labor, and the labor process, the automated system of machinery, as both the result of labor and the tool on which further labor depends, transforms from a confirmation of the essential power of the human into something that excludes humans, “aggregated into a material force that rules over us, is beyond our control, frustrates our wishes, and nullifies our plans,” [16]16 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, *The German Ideology*, Part I. [Translator’s note: This is a paraphrase of Marx and Engels’ description of the alienated social power of the division of labor.] as if this force were alien, external to humans, possessing its own “stage of development that not only does not depend on the will and actions of people but instead dominates their will and actions.” [17]17 Ibid. This process is reinforced by the spread of the great division of labor in capitalist society: “Owing to the extension of machinery and the division of labor, the labor of the proletarians has lost all independent character and, consequently, all attraction for the workers. The worker becomes a mere appendage of the machine, and is required only to perform the simplest, most monotonous, and most easily learned operations,” [18]18 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, *The Communist Manifesto*, Chapter 1. with the worker merely treated as a conscious limb or tool of the system of machinery. As a more advanced automated system of machinery, AI applied within the capitalist mode of production likewise follows the logic of capital valorization, leading to the squeezing out and replacement of humans in the production process, giving rise to the emergence of a large so-called “useless class.” Second, in an essential sense, the species-essence of AI points to the externalization of the essential power realized by humans in the process of practical activity; it is generated in human practical activity and confirms and realizes the essence of human intelligence, serving as proof of humanity’s gradual realization of the liberation of labor. AI’s intervention in the field of social production and its promotion of higher-level automation and unmanned operation can free people from heavy socially necessary labor, granting them more free time and creating objective material conditions for humanity’s leap from the “realm of necessity” to the “realm of freedom.” This means that people spend less and less time on labor to obtain the necessities of life, and instead engage more in creative labor that develops their own essence. Labor increasingly loses its character as a “means of livelihood,” achieving a unity between freedom in the sense of human self-realization and necessity in the sense of human survival and living. The liberating potential and alienating effects inherent in AI are not mutually exclusive or opposed but have an intrinsic necessary connection: that is, the social movement of AI objectively shortens socially necessary labor time, but under the dominance of the logic of capital, this “saving” is not transformed into leisure time and free time for members of society; instead, it prolongs relative surplus labor time, deepens capitalist exploitation, and, due to the generation of a relative surplus population, is transformed into workers’ “unemployment time” and “useless time.” AI itself does not necessarily lead to the exclusion of humans; its negative effects stem from the capital control and application of AI.
A dialectical view of the social effects of AI helps to move beyond the opposition between radical progressivism and conservative romanticism. Since modern times, in the face of the rapid development of science and technology, two opposing tendencies have existed: first, the progressivism inaugurated by the Enlightenment, which regards science and technology as tools for humans to understand, transform, and control the world, optimistically believing that with the progress of science and technology and the continuous deciphering of nature’s secrets, humanity can continuously avoid the disasters caused by past ignorance, thereby providing a foundation for more perfect moral consciousness and political organization. Second, romanticism, which has survived from older social traditions, seeks to judge historical things by appealing to moral factors such as conscience and compassion; through criticism and suspicion of new things, it offers solutions to the crisis of modernity in a “return to the past” of traditional ways of life. Today, people’s attitudes toward AI are exactly the same: some celebrate technological progress as a victory over nature that promotes human freedom; others worry about the threat of AI to human civilization and call for a halt to the development of higher-level AI systems. In Marx, we can also see an interweaving of two attitudes. On the one hand, Marx’s doctrine contains a strong belief in historical progress, holding that the evolution of human society from lower to higher stages is an inevitable trend of history, with the basis for this belief lying in Marx’s view of constantly developing productive forces as the foundation of the entire society. On the other hand, Marx acknowledged that “the victory of technology seems to be bought at the cost of moral decay… All our inventions and progress seem to result in endowing material forces with intellectual life, while human life is reduced to a dull material force.” [19]19 Karl Marx, “Speech at the Anniversary of the *People’s Paper*,” 1856. [Translator’s note: This is a paraphrase of Marx’s well-known passage on the contradictory effects of technological progress.] But these two attitudes are not contradictory in Marx; the possibility of their dialectical unity lies in: first, Marx’s description of technological progress and moral decay has a specific context, pointing to the “antinomy” phenomenon that occurs only in societies with private ownership, especially capitalist society; this phenomenon is not eternal, and its social root lies in the institutional design centered on private property. Second, Marx once proposed the classic proposition that “the supersession of self-alienation follows the same path as self-alienation,” [20]20 Karl Marx, *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844*, “Private Property and Communism.” meaning that in capitalist society, although technological progress leads to the universal occurrence of human alienation, the supersession of alienation cannot be achieved by rejecting and eliminating technological progress; on the contrary, the development of advanced productive forces represented by technological progress is the necessary path for superseding alienation, “for without this development, there would only be poverty, the generalization of extreme destitution; and in conditions of extreme destitution, the struggle for necessities would have to begin anew, and all the old filthy things would revive.” [21]21 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, *The German Ideology*, Part I. Marx’s dialectical handling of the relationship between these two attitudes provides an effective reference for understanding and evaluating AI, namely, adhering to the unity of the standard of productive forces progress and the standard of moral progress, and establishing a historical consciousness of solving social value problems through the transformation of the mode of production.
Faced with the development of artificial intelligence and the epochal transformations it has triggered, the correct attitude is not to fabricate new utopian myths or disaster fantasies, but to conduct a sober and calm examination from a historical and progressive perspective, grasping the real premises and historical limitations of its existence and development. Proceeding from the theoretical perspective of historical materialism, artificial intelligence fundamentally points to the extension and externalization of human mental capacity; it is the “brain” of other automated machine systems created by humanity, and together with them constitutes an external confirmation of humanity’s essential powers. It provides the material basis for humanity to further liberate itself from heavy social necessary labor and move toward free and comprehensive development. However, artificial intelligence only enhances human rational capacity; it itself does not possess the life experience and practical ability brought by the human body. The deep imprint of instrumentality means that artificial intelligence cannot be a “divine” existence surpassing humanity, but is merely a foundational material existence for humanity’s further liberation. Grasping the essential attributes of artificial intelligence on the basis of historical materialism can dispel the intellectual fantasy that regards human liberation as a “natural historical process” of AI development. It will, on the foundation of fully promoting the development of artificial intelligence and relying on the proletariat’s practice of “abolishing the existing state of affairs,” realize the practical advancement of the historical activity of human liberation.
