More Consciously Upholding the “Two Integrations” — The Fundamental Path for Adapting Marxism to the Chinese Context and the Needs of the Times

General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in the report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC: “Only by integrating the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture, and by persistently applying dialectical materialism and historical materialism, can we correctly answer the major questions posed by the times and by practice, and can we always maintain the vibrant vitality and robust energy of Marxism.” This profoundly clarifies that the fundamental path for adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times is the “Two Integrations,” and it elucidates the major question of why the tree of Chinese Marxist theory, adapted to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, has deep roots and luxuriant foliage.

习近平总书记在党的二十大报告中指出：“只有把马克思主义基本原理同中国具体实际相结合、同中华优秀传统文化相结合，坚持运用辩证唯物主义和历史唯物主义，才能正确回答时代和实践提出的重大问题，才能始终保持马克思主义的蓬勃生机和旺盛活力。”这深刻阐明了推进马克思主义中国化时代化的根本途径是“两个结合”，阐明了中国化时代化马克思主义理论之树何以根深叶茂的重大问题。

A summation of experience and a revelation of the laws governing the process of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times. Marxism profoundly reveals the universal laws governing the development of nature, human society, and human thought, and it is the fundamental guiding ideology for our Party’s founding and governance, and for the rejuvenation and strengthening of our nation. This scientific thought is not a dogma but a guide to action; it always develops with the progress of the times, practice, and understanding, and it continuously absorbs all outstanding intellectual and cultural achievements from human history to enrich itself. Chinese Communists are steadfast believers and practitioners of Marxism, and they are also faithful inheritors and promoters of the best of traditional Chinese culture. Over the past century and more, our Party has clearly inscribed Marxism on its banner, insisted on proceeding from China’s specific realities, and drawn nourishment from the best of traditional Chinese culture, successfully opening up the correct path for achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. In this process, our Party deeply recognized that to uphold and develop Marxism, it must be integrated with China’s specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture. Based on this summation of experience and this understanding of the laws, our Party has continuously advanced theoretical innovation on the basis of practice, promoted the rooting and flourishing of Marxism in China, and formed a series of major achievements in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, providing scientific theoretical guidance for the development of the Party and the nation’s undertakings.

The realistic path and inherent laws of Marxism’s innovative development in China in the New Era. Thought is the mother of the times; practice is the source of theory. China in the New Era is undergoing the most extensive and profound social transformation in its history and is carrying out the most magnificent and unique practical innovation in human history. There is an urgent need, under the guidance of scientific thought, to correctly answer the questions of China, the world, the people, and the times in a way that conforms to China’s realities and the requirements of the times, and to arrive at scientific understandings that accord with objective laws. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, Chinese Communists, with Comrade Xi Jinping as their chief representative, have upheld the integration of the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s specific realities and with the best of traditional Chinese culture, and have founded Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. Under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, and under the scientific guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, our Party has united and led the people of all ethnic groups across the country, comprehensively advanced the great struggle, the great project, the great cause, and the great dream [1]1 The “great struggle, the great project, the great cause, and the great dream” is a standard four-part formulation from the 19th National Congress of the CPC (2017), referring respectively to the struggle against various difficulties and risks, the great project of Party building, the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation., overcome many long-standing problems that had not been solved, accomplished many major matters of long-term importance, and promoted historic achievements in the cause of the Party and the nation that have captured the world’s attention. Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was formed by upholding the “Two Integrations”; it is the Marxism of contemporary China and the Marxism of the twenty-first century, the essence of Chinese culture and the spirit of the Chinese times, and it has achieved a new leap in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.

At the same time, we must draw on the rich philosophical thought, humanistic spirit, values, and moral norms contained in the profound and extensive best of traditional Chinese culture, vigorously promote the creative transformation and innovative development of the best of traditional Chinese culture, strengthen historical confidence and cultural confidence, uphold the principle of making the past serve the present and weeding through the old to bring forth the new, connect the essence of Marxist thought with the essence of the best of traditional Chinese culture, and integrate it with the common values that the people use daily without conscious awareness, continuously endowing scientific theory with distinct Chinese characteristics, continuously consolidating the historical and popular foundations for adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, and striving to write a new chapter in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.
