Critically Reflecting on Three Models of Contemporary Foreign Marxist Ecological Critique
With the changes and development of Western society, contemporary foreign Marxism has formed several important critical paths in its critique of capitalism. Focusing on issues such as the state, consumption, ecology, ideology, technology, globalization, and modernity in real capitalist societies, contemporary foreign Marxism has developed critical paths including state capitalism critique, consumer society critique, late capitalism critique, global capitalism critique, ideology critique, techno-capitalism critique, and ecological critique. It should be said that since the 1960s, with the outbreak of global ecological crises, contemporary foreign Marxism has undergone an ecological turn. Many scholars have taken ecological and environmental issues as their research objects, attempting to explore paths and solutions to resolve the global ecological crisis, thereby forming a distinctive ecological critique path, which is represented by three critical models: ecological Marxism, ecological socialism, and historical-geographical materialism.
The Ecological Critique of Ecological Marxism
Ecological Marxism is an influential academic school within contemporary foreign Marxism, formed and developed in the mid-to-late 20th century, emerging amid the vigorous development of Western ecological movements. It attempts to combine ecology with Marxism, exploring the roots of the ecological crisis through theoretical analysis of Marxism, thereby seeking new paths for humanity to eliminate the ecological crisis and rebuild socialism. The main representatives of ecological Marxism include James O’Connor and John Bellamy Foster from the United States, Joel Kovel from the United States, William Leiss and Ben Agger from Canada, André Gorz from France, David Pepper from the United Kingdom, and Reiner Grundmann from Germany. Based on the contemporary Western ecological crisis, ecological Marxism integrates Marxist ecological thought with contemporary Western ecological thought, forming a theoretical system that unifies ecological philosophy, ecological economics, and ecological socialism.
Ecological Marxism deeply excavates the ecological thought of Marx and Engels, launching critiques of contemporary capitalism from multiple aspects including capital critique, technology critique, institutional critique, and cultural values critique, attempting to provide new theoretical resources and paths for resolving the global ecological crisis and achieving human freedom and liberation. The critique of the capitalist ecological crisis by ecological Marxism is most unique and valuable. They explore the roots of the ecological crisis within the overall capitalist system, proposing important innovative theories such as the “dialectic of shattered expectations” (the theory of shattered expectations), the dual crisis theory, the theory of ecological socialist revolution and construction, and the “metabolism” theory, greatly advancing research on the contemporary ecological crisis.
The Ecological Critique of Ecological Socialism
Ecological socialism is closely linked to ecological Marxism. Many Western left-wing Marxist scholars studying the ecological crisis are both ecological Marxist scholars and ecological socialist scholars. Ecological Marxism provides the basic theoretical foundation for ecological socialism, and ecological socialism is the natural result of the theoretical logic of ecological Marxism.
The main representative of the first generation of ecological socialism includes Adam Schaff from Poland, who advocated combining socialism with the ecological movement to achieve a union of “green” and “red” and build an ideal socialist society. Representatives of the second generation include William Leiss, Ben Agger, and André Gorz. The theoretical characteristic of this generation is the “fusion of red and green.” They argue that the current crisis of capitalism has shifted from an economic crisis to an ecological crisis. To resolve the ecological crisis, it is necessary to oppose the concept of controlling nature, eliminate alienated consumption, change people’s lifestyles, limit human needs within a reasonable range, implement economic structural adjustments, adopt a “steady-state economy,” use decentralized technologies and renewable energy, and construct a completely new development concept of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Representatives of the third generation include Georges Labica from France, Reiner Grundmann from Germany, and David Pepper from the United Kingdom. The main characteristic of this generation is the “greening of the red.” They advocate deepening the understanding of the relationship between the ecological crisis, ecologism, and ecological socialism, and have constructed the principles of ecological socialism.
In summary, ecological socialism attempts to use Marx’s historical materialism to point out that it is the capitalist system that leads to the global ecological crisis, and it critiques ecological colonialism, militarism, and hegemonism. Ecological socialism advocates basing itself on grassroots democracy, taking a non-violent, gradualist reform path, and also advocates fully utilizing social forces such as the ecological movement, the feminist movement, and the anti-nuclear movement, while combining them with the workers’ movement, to establish a “steady-state” socialist economic model.
The Ecological Critique of Historical-Geographical Materialism
Historical-geographical materialism is an academic school that emerged in the mid-to-late 20th century and still holds strong influence today. It combines reflection on the ecological crisis with the embedding of geographical space. Its main representatives include Henri Lefebvre from France, and David Harvey and Edward W. Soja from the United States.
The ecological critique of historical-geographical materialism emphasizes combining ecological issues with space. They argue that due to the expansion of the logic of capital, space has become a site for capital accumulation and valorization. Capital has penetrated all spatial domains, including natural space and social space, private space and public space. Moreover, the spatial penetration of capital has gradually transformed into the spatial production of capital, because under capitalist conditions, space is not only a condition for capital to create value and surplus profit, but has itself become capitalized and commodified. The spatial production of capitalism both manifests the domination of power and, through means such as spatial transfer and spatial fix, turns nature into a “tap” and a “sink” for capital accumulation.
At the global level, the uneven spatial development brought about by capital expansion manifests as ecological imperialism in developed countries. Ecological imperialism, on the one hand, obscures the ecological colonization of developed countries, and on the other hand, forces developing countries to bear the destruction of the natural environment caused by economic development, thereby leading to the destruction of global ecological justice. The ecological disasters in developing countries further exacerbate the global ecological crisis. By means of the global spatial expansion of capital, ecological imperialism plunders global resources, shifts pollution, monopolizes global ecological discourse, and constructs trade barriers related to the environment, attempting to realize its ecological hegemony. Therefore, the ecological critique of historical-geographical materialism expands our understanding of the global spatial reshaping brought about by the capitalist ecological crisis and deepens the analysis of the essence of the global ecological crisis and the dissolution of imperial space from the perspective of ecological imperialism (spatial imperialism).
Theoretical Dilemmas and Deficiencies of Contemporary Foreign Marxist Ecological Critique
The three models of contemporary foreign Marxist ecological critique, from different yet interrelated angles, have profoundly analyzed the ecological problems of contemporary capitalist society and even the world. They offer certain insights for understanding the essence, logic, and effects of contemporary capitalism and for highlighting the contemporary value of Marx’s historical materialism. However, it is undeniable that all three models suffer from several theoretical dilemmas and deficiencies.
First, they overemphasize theoretical interpretation while neglecting integration with complex and diverse revolutionary practice. The current capitalist society exhibits characteristics such as political polarization, social fragmentation, and the prevalence of racism and populism, with society showing a trend of multiple contradictions erupting simultaneously and overall alienation. Although the three models of ecological critique mentioned above focus on the ecological problems faced by Western societies and combine Marxism with ecological theory, broadening the horizon of capitalist critique, they fail to recognize that without combining with actually existing anti-capitalist political struggles, the ecological plans and visions of a new future society they propose will become pure utopias, lacking a real foundation and the possibility of realization.
Second, they still confine ecological critique within the ruling system of capitalism. The three models of contemporary foreign Marxist ecological critique neither propose effective paths to transcend the actual power structure and overall system of capitalism from the perspective of the developmental forms of human society, nor do they pay much attention to the world significance of the construction of socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics, thereby obscuring their theoretical horizon and weakening the pertinence and effectiveness of their theories. We know that if ecological critique is conducted only within the ruling system determined by the existing capitalist system and its mode of production, constructing some ecological theory and proposing some reformist measures, without fundamentally touching the capitalist system and eliminating the logic of capital, then the goal of transcending capitalism cannot be truly achieved. If the practice of socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics is not taken seriously, the direction of human ecological civilization construction cannot be understood, and the theory loses its sense of the times and falls into Western-centrism.
Third, they all reconstruct Marxist ecological thought to varying degrees, and there exist problems of exaggerating and even distorting Marxist ecological thought. The three models of ecological critique all involve understanding and constructing Marxist, especially Marx and Engels', ecological thought. Whether it is ecological Marxism and ecological socialism attempting to "green" Marxism, or historical-geographical materialism attempting to combine Marxist ecological thought with space and organic philosophy, they all attempt to construct a theoretical system that conforms to their own theoretical interests. This constitutes, to varying degrees, a "reconstruction" of Marxist ecological thought, with many problems. Moreover, these theoretical systems also have internal disputes and cannot truly guide the practice of real ecological civilization.
Through the analysis of foreign Marxist scholars' ecological critique, we deeply realize that we must comprehensively and accurately understand the roots of the current ecological crisis, dialectically view the logic of capital, deeply grasp the direct impact of the capitalist system and its mode of production on the ecological crisis, be vigilant against ecological traps, and ensure ecological justice. We must take Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization as a guide and continuously advance the construction of socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics. Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization proposes that solving ecological problems should be treated as an important livelihood undertaking, and that from the aspects of institutional construction, talent development, and policy support, the urgent needs of the people in material, spiritual, and especially ecological and environmental aspects should be effectively met, and a beautiful China should be built through continuous advancement. On this basis, transform the mode of economic development, moving from traditional development paths and models to a development path and model guided by the Five Concepts for Development [1]1 The Five Concepts for Development (五大发展理念) refer to innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing, proposed by the CPC as guiding principles for China's development during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020)., transforming one-sided development into comprehensive development with green development as the goal, and achieving coordinated economic, social, and ecological development.
