[Editor’s Note] This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of *Contemporary China History Studies*. As the only professional academic journal dedicated to the study of the history of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in China, since its inaugural issue in January 1994, the journal has adhered to the editorial policy of “studying history to comprehend change, advising governance and educating people,” upholding the correct political direction, academic orientation, and value orientation, adhering to historical materialism, firmly grasping the main theme, main line, mainstream, and essence of PRC history, and publishing a large number of high-quality research results on PRC history. It has made significant contributions to promoting the construction of the “three major systems” [1]1 The “three major systems” (三大体系) refer to the disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics. of PRC history research, building an independent Chinese knowledge system, and flourishing philosophy and social sciences. At the same time, it has actively explored and attempted to strengthen international academic exchange and external academic dissemination, achieving certain results and accumulating experience, and winning recognition and high praise from domestic and international academic circles. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its founding, in order to thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC and the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter on the 30th anniversary of the founding of the PRC History Society, to further unite the vast number of PRC history research workers across the country, continuously improve research standards, innovate propaganda methods, and promote the high-quality development of the journal, the journal specially invited former editors-in-chief Zhang Xingxing and Liu Guoxin, two researchers, to discuss the journal’s development process and editorial experience for the benefit of readers. In the future, the journal will continue to unite with the majority of academic colleagues, guided by the latest achievements in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, keeping in mind the responsibility and mission of the “national team” [2]2 “National team” (国家队) here refers to the leading, core group of researchers officially designated to conduct research on the history of the People’s Republic of China, implying a position of authority and responsibility. of PRC history research, adhering to integrity and innovation, publishing more high-quality academic achievements that are substantial, high-level, possess ideological penetration, and can be regarded as “trustworthy history” and “good history,” inspiring people to strengthen historical confidence and enhance historical initiative, consolidating a strong position for researching and publicizing PRC history, continuously promoting and perfecting the construction of the “three major systems” of PRC history research, enhancing international communication capacity and influence, and striving to open up new horizons in PRC history research.

Strengthening the construction of international communication capacity, promoting foreign people-to-people and cultural exchanges through multiple channels, telling China’s story well, spreading China’s voice well, and promoting mutual learning among human civilizations are important tasks proposed by the Party and the state. As the only professional academic journal in China dedicated to the study of the history of the People’s Republic of China, *Contemporary China History Studies* bears significant responsibility and possesses many unique academic advantages in interpreting the Chinese path, summarizing Chinese experience, telling China’s story well, and spreading China’s voice well. During the 12 years from 2008 to 2019 when I served as the editor-in-chief of *Contemporary China History Studies*, I made some active explorations to strengthen the foreign academic exchange and academic dissemination of contemporary Chinese history research, striving to enhance the international communication capacity of contemporary Chinese history research, and achieved some modest results and superficial experience. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of *Contemporary China History Studies*, I am organizing and summarizing some of my superficial insights, hoping to contribute some wisdom to enhancing the international communication capacity of contemporary Chinese history research.

I. Attending International Academic Activities, Fully Utilizing Overseas Academic Platforms

On the eve of taking over as editor-in-chief of *Contemporary China History Studies*, I was invited to attend the “General Assembly of Member Organizations of the International Committee of Historical Sciences” co-hosted by the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. This conference was held in Beijing from September 15 to 18, 2007, with the participation of members of the ICHS Executive Bureau and representatives of historians from 27 countries across five continents: Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. During the conference, in addition to the ICHS Executive Bureau meeting and the General Assembly of Member Organizations, the Chinese Historical Society also hosted an international academic symposium titled “The Current State and Future of Chinese History,” aimed at promoting a better understanding among foreign historians of the development status and future prospects of Chinese historiography. According to the division of labor and requirements of the Chinese Historical Society, I wrote an English paper titled “The Current State of Research on the History of the People’s Republic of China” and delivered an approximately 30-minute report in English to the ICHS members and representatives from various countries, introducing the rise and development of research on the history of the PRC, the main academic achievements obtained, some major issues in the research, and several thoughts on strengthening and deepening research on the history of the PRC. The Chinese version of “The Current State of Research on the History of the People’s Republic of China” was published in *Contemporary China History Studies* Issue 2, 2008, and was fully reprinted in the Renmin University of China’s photocopied newspaper and periodical materials *History* Issue 9, 2008.

More than two years later, as a member of the Chinese Historical Society delegation, I attended the 21st International Congress of Historical Sciences held in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, from August 22 to 28, 2010. This was the first time a scholar of contemporary Chinese history, i.e., the history of the People’s Republic of China, attended the International Congress of Historical Sciences. The International Congress of Historical Sciences is held every five years by the ICHS and is an academic gathering of historians from around the world. In 1985, the Chinese Historical Society officially joined the ICHS as a national member and subsequently organized delegations to attend the 16th to 20th International Congresses of Historical Sciences. More than 100 countries participated in the 21st Congress, with over 1,500 officially registered delegates and some additional free participants, totaling more than 2,000 people. The most significant achievement of the Chinese delegation’s participation in this congress was the successful passage of the proposal for the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences to be held at Shandong University in China, following procedures such as the bidding country’s—the Chinese delegation’s—presentation to the congress and voting by the Executive Committee. This was the first time the International Congress of Historical Sciences was held outside of Western Europe and the Americas, carrying very important significance and influence. *Contemporary China History Studies* Issue 6, 2010, published in the form of a journal news item, the “China Wins the Right to Host the 22nd International Congress of Historical Sciences” and the academic dynamics of the journal’s editor-in-chief participating in the Chinese Historical Society delegation. During the conference, in addition to participating in the collective activities of the Chinese Historical Society delegation, I also attended and paid attention to thematic sessions such as “National History and the Globalization of History,” “National Identity and Dominant Memory,” “The Importance of History to Politics and Culture,” “Images, Mass Media, and History,” “Personal Biography and Microhistory,” and “History in the Face of Controversial Memory” based on my academic interests, exchanged ideas with relevant scholars, broadened my academic horizons, widened my research perspective, and gained further understanding of the research dynamics and academic frontiers of international historiography.

From January 8 to 10, 2015, at the invitation of Professor Joseph Siracusa of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and Professor Frank Gavin of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, I went to Melbourne, Australia, to attend the international academic symposium “Reassessing the Global Nuclear Order: Past, Present, and Future,” co-hosted by RMIT and MIT. There were a total of 42 official delegates at this international symposium, including 21 American scholars, 14 Australian scholars, 2 New Zealand scholars, 1 scholar each from Vanuatu, the United Kingdom, and Austria, and 2 Chinese representatives (myself and Professor He Congnian from the College of Defense Studies, National Defense University). I primarily based my paper and submitted essay, “China’s Public Declarations on Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Strategy,” on materials such as the *Statement of the Government of the People’s Republic of China* issued after China’s successful first nuclear test in October 1964, speeches by Hu Jintao at the first Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C., USA in April 2010, and at the second Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea in March 2012, speeches by Xi Jinping at the third Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague, the Netherlands in March 2014, and China’s defense white papers published by the State Council Information Office. Because the Chinese scholars received the conference invitation and submitted their papers somewhat later, the conference was unable to arrange a formal presentation; I made a brief impromptu speech during the discussion session, introducing the main viewpoints and content of my paper. The attending scholars highly praised the Chinese government’s consistent stance of being the first to make a solemn commitment not to be the first to use nuclear weapons, actively supporting and joining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, advocating for the comprehensive prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons, and firmly safeguarding global and regional nuclear security.

Actively going abroad to participate in international academic exchanges and striving for the right to speak on international academic platforms are of great significance for enhancing the international communication capacity and influence of contemporary Chinese history research. It is necessary to vigorously improve one’s own academic literacy, research level, and capacity for foreign exchange, to make extensive friends in foreign and overseas academic circles, to adopt flexible and diverse methods and means of exchange, to grasp international academic trends and frontiers, to align with the academic concerns of different regions, countries, and groups, and to enhance the effectiveness of foreign academic exchanges and communication.

II. Developing an Overseas Author Base and Publishing Research Results of Overseas Scholars

The Institute of Contemporary China Studies (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) places great emphasis on foreign academic exchanges. It has long-term scientific research cooperation and exchange agreements with the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (now renamed the Institute of China and Modern Asia), and has signed letters of intent for academic exchange with the National Institute of Korean History and the Institute of Chinese Studies of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. In September 2004, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Institute established the International Advanced Forum on Contemporary Chinese History, held every five years. It subsequently held the second, third, and fourth forums in 2009, 2014, and 2019, making it an institutionalized international exchange platform with considerable academic influence. The Institute’s foreign academic exchanges and institutionalized international exchange platforms have created favorable conditions for *Contemporary China History Studies* to strengthen its foreign academic exchanges and to develop contributions from internationally renowned scholars.

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and former Director of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Mikhail L. Titarenko, was one of the foreign scholars who visited the Institute most frequently and was a co-founder of academic exchanges and cooperation between the Institute and the Institute of Far Eastern Studies. In September 2009, Titarenko attended the Second International Advanced Forum on Contemporary Chinese History held by the Institute. *Contemporary China History Studies* published his paper “The International Significance of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Experience of China’s Reform” in its sixth issue that year. I visited the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences twice, in May 2006 and June 2012, and was warmly received by Titarenko on both occasions. In November 2015, Titarenko was awarded the “World China Studies Contribution Award.” Titarenko, the team of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies under his leadership, and other Russian scholars became an important author base for *Contemporary China History Studies*. Issues 2 and 4 of *Contemporary China History Studies* in 2010 successively published “Research on the History of New China in Russian Academic Circles in the Last Ten Years” by V. N. Usov of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies and “Main Principles of China’s Foreign Policy (1949–2007)” by K. M. Gerasimova; Issue 2 in 2011 published “Research by Russian Scholars on the History of the Korean War” by Yu. V. Vanin of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Issue 4 in 2013 published “Contemporary Chinese Studies in the Russian Pacific Coast Region” by V. L. Larin, Director of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnology of the Peoples of the Far East, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Issues 5 in 2013 and 4 in 2014 published “China’s Modernization Experience: Some Domestic and International Perspectives” by D. A. Smirnov of the Institute of Far Eastern Studies and “Administrative System Reform: China’s Path to Success” by Alexander Yershov.

Professor Ezra F. Vogel of Harvard University in the United States was a highly internationally renowned scholar of Chinese studies. He stayed at the Institute as a visiting scholar in 2006 and 2007 to collect materials for his research on the “Deng Xiaoping Era,” and was also invited to participate in the Institute’s academic activities on multiple occasions, giving academic lectures to the Institute’s researchers. On October 27, 2017, I had the honor of chairing Professor Vogel’s academic lecture at the Institute, where he humorously and earnestly said that the Institute was his “work unit” in Beijing. In September 2009, Vogel attended the Second International Advanced Forum on Contemporary Chinese History, and *Contemporary China History Studies* published his article “Deng Xiaoping and China’s Opening to the Outside World: Sino-US Relations, 1977–1979” in its sixth issue. In November 2013, I led an academic delegation from the Institute to visit the United States. Vogel warmly received us at his home at Harvard University and arranged for our delegation to visit and inspect the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Yenching Library at Harvard University. That year, Vogel was awarded the “World China Studies Contribution Award.” In September 2019, although Vogel was unable to attend the Fourth International Advanced Forum on Contemporary Chinese History, he sent a video speech titled “1949: The 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese Communist Party” for the forum.

In November 2007, Yoo Young-yeol, Chairman of the National Institute of Korean History, visited the Institute and signed a letter of intent for academic exchange with the Institute, promoting academic exchanges with South Korea. In October 2008, I led an academic delegation from the Institute to visit South Korea, delivering an academic lecture titled “The Institute of Contemporary China Studies and Research on the History of the People’s Republic of China” for the National Institute of Korean History, and visiting relevant research institutions at Seoul National University, Korea University in Seoul, and Kyungpook National University and Keimyung University in Daegu. At Seoul National University, we visited Professor Chung Jae-ho, Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies and Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations. Professor Chung earned his PhD from the University of Michigan, was a visiting scholar at Renmin University of China in 2007, is proficient in Chinese, and is also an editorial board member of the English-language *China Quarterly*. He presented me with his English-language article “A Review of Contemporary Chinese Political Studies in South Korea.” With the author’s permission, I arranged for Zhan Heng, a graduate student in the Department of National History, to compile and translate it into Chinese, which was published in Issue 2 of *Contemporary China History Studies* in 2009. Through this visit to South Korea, we also invited Professor Lee Jeong-nam, a research professor at the Asiatic Research Institute of Korea University, to attend the Second International Advanced Forum on Contemporary Chinese History held the following year.

In addition, papers by foreign scholars published in *Contemporary China History Studies* include: “Chinese and Zhou Enlai Views of Japanese Students: A Case Study of Soka University” by Professor Takashi Kawasaki of Soka University in Japan (Issue 3, 2008); “60 Years of Chinese Diplomacy: Retrospect and Prospect” by Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Metropolitan University and former Japanese Chair of the Japan-China Friendship Committee for the 21st Century, Tatsumi Okabe (Issue 2, 2010); “A Historical Investigation of the Central Investigation Department of the Chinese Communist Party” by Professor Michael Schoenhals of Lund University in Sweden (Issue 2, 2010); “Making Policy through Experimentation: China’s Unique Experience” by Professor Sebastian Heilmann of the East Asia and Pacific Research Institute at the University of Trier in Germany (Issue 3, 2010); “Current Status and Prospects of Contemporary Chinese History Research in Vietnam” by Do Tien Sam, Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (Issue 5, 2013); and “Reform and Development of China’s Social Security System and the Chinese Dream” by Phung Thi Hue, Deputy Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (Issue 5, 2014). The articles written by these internationally renowned scholars provide multi-perspective observations and analyses of contemporary Chinese history and have played a very positive role in enhancing the international influence of contemporary Chinese history research.

III. Strengthening Foreign Academic Exchanges and Organizing Overseas Academic Conferences

Collaborating with foreign research institutions to hold academic seminars is also an important form of conducting international academic exchange and enhancing international communication capacity and influence. On June 15, 2012, the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies, and the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences jointly held an international academic seminar in Moscow on “Sino-Russian Relations and Their Domestic and International Factors (1991–2011).” More than 30 scholars from the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies, the China Institute of International Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Economics, and the Russian Ministry of Regional Development attended the meeting. Zhu Jiamu, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Director of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, and Mikhail Titarenko jointly presided over the opening ceremony and the conference summary. *Contemporary China History Studies* published an overview of the conference in a special column in its 2012 issue No. 5, and published abstracts of the Chinese scholars’ papers. The main papers included Zhu Jiamu’s “Review and Prospects of Sino-Russian Friendly and Cooperative Relations,” Ding Ming’s “Review and Analysis of 20 Years of Sino-Russian Relations,” Xu Yijie’s “Review and Prospects of Sino-Russian Economic and Trade Cooperation,” Liu Guoxin’s “Brief Discussion on 20 Years of Sino-Russian Cultural Exchange,” Zhang Xingxing’s “Sino-Russian Military Cooperation Outside the Framework of an Alliance,” Sun Cuiping’s “East Asian Factors in Sino-Russian Relations (1992–2002),” and Zhou Hong’s “Review of Research on the Sino-Russian Strategic Partnership of Coordination.” According to the plan agreed upon by the Chinese and Russian sides, the second phase of the international seminar on “Sino-Russian Relations and Their Domestic and International Factors (1991–2011)” was held in Beijing on June 28, 2013. More than 20 scholars attended, including Chinese scholars from the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies, the China Institute of International Studies, and the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, and Russian scholars from the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Moscow State University, and Transbaikal State University. I presided over the meeting. The holding of the two phases of the meeting had a positive impact on strengthening research on the history of Sino-Russian relations, correctly understanding and summarizing the achievements and experience gained in 20 years of Sino-Russian relations, deepening academic exchange between scholars of the two countries, and promoting the healthy development of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

In July 2008, Do Tien Sam [4]4 Do Tien Sam (杜进森) is a Vietnamese scholar who served as Director of the Institute for Chinese Studies at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. paid an official visit to the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, and the two sides signed a letter of intent on academic exchange and cooperation, which promoted the rapid development of academic exchanges between the two sides. In December, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, Zhu Jiamu led an academic delegation to Hanoi, Vietnam, to attend the international seminar “Achievements and Experience of 30 Years of China’s Reform and Opening Up,” hosted by the Institute for Chinese Studies of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. In addition to scholars from China and Vietnam, scholars from Japan and the Hong Kong region of China also attended. Participants conducted extensive discussions and exchanges on the great achievements and basic experience of China’s reform and opening up over 30 years in the economic, political, cultural, and social fields, especially successful practices such as special economic zones, local development, social equity, cultural education, and maintaining peace and stability. *Contemporary China History Studies* published an academic summary of this international seminar on “Achievements and Experience of 30 Years of China’s Reform and Opening Up” in its 2009 issue No. 1, introducing the basic overview and main content of the conference, expounding on the central issues discussed at the conference, and promoting the dissemination of the results of academic exchange. In November 2018, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up, I led an academic delegation from the Institute of Contemporary China Studies to conduct academic exchanges again with the Institute for Chinese Studies of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and the Southern Institute of Social Sciences. The Institute for Chinese Studies of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences is located in the capital, Hanoi, and the Southern Institute of Social Sciences is located in Ho Chi Minh City. We successively held academic seminars with the leaders and scholars of the two institutes, focusing on China’s reform and opening up and Vietnam’s *doi moi* (renovation). I and delegation members Song Yuehong, Li Wen, Zhang Jincai, Yao Li, and Wang Qiaorong respectively gave a brief introduction from the aspects of the reform of the Party and state leadership institutions, political construction, economic construction, legal system construction, social construction, and peaceful diplomacy, outlining the achievements and experience gained in the 40 years of China’s reform and opening up, especially the comprehensive deepening of reform and promotion of high-standard opening up since the 18th National Congress of the CPC [5]5 The 18th National Congress of the CPC was held in November 2012, marking the beginning of Xi Jinping’s leadership and the launch of a. Vietnamese scholars introduced Vietnam’s economic and social development situation and the problems encountered since *doi moi*, promoting exchange and mutual learning between reform and opening up and *doi moi*. This form of academic exchange enables us to more clearly recognize the great achievements of China’s development from an international comparative perspective, more deeply grasp the special laws of China’s economic and social development, and more effectively resolve the various new situations, new problems, and new challenges encountered on the path forward.

IV. Expanding Overseas Academic Dissemination, Publishing the English Edition of *Contemporary China History Studies*

Publishing the English edition of *Contemporary China History Studies* was an important decision made by Zhu Jiamu during his tenure as Director of the Editorial Committee of *Contemporary China History Studies*, and he attached great importance to and provided careful guidance for this work. In November 2009, he helped the editorial department establish contact channels with the Social Sciences Academic Press, providing favorable conditions for advancing the publication of the English edition. To do a good job in the editing and publishing of the English edition, I participated in a training course for editors-in-chief of English-language journals organized by the General Administration of Press and Publication and the China Periodicals Association, and obtained a qualification certificate for editors-in-chief of English-language journals through examination.

At that time, the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press had only recently been established, with limited staff and heavy workloads, and various business channels were just being set up, so the work progressed slowly. After repeated negotiations and screening, it was finally decided to entrust Brill Academic Publishers in the Netherlands with the translation, editing, publishing, and distribution of the English edition of *Contemporary China History Studies*. After selecting the papers for the first volume of the English edition, the tasks of translation, editing, and proofreading were all very complex, and we could only advance step by step, solving problems one by one. It was not until early 2015 that the first volume of the English edition of *Contemporary China History Studies* was finally published. From the first contact with colleagues from the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press in November 2009 to discuss the publication of the English edition, to the publication of the first volume, it took a full five years. During this period, Zhang Meng and the other editors of the editorial department put in a great deal of effort and hard work.

The first volume of the English edition of *Contemporary China History Studies* is a comprehensive collection, containing 14 papers in total, with two papers each on political history, economic history, cultural history, social history, defense history, diplomatic history, and review articles. The excitement over the publication of the first volume of the English edition had barely subsided when cold water was poured on us. A well-known foreign scholar reported to the editorial department that the English translation of the English edition of *Contemporary China History Studies* was “terrible,” completely incompatible with this serious academic journal. It was learned that the person responsible for editing the English edition, in order to pay less in translation fees, had hired some foreign students who lacked both a professional foundation in contemporary Chinese history and adequate English proficiency to do the English translation work, resulting in many problems such as inaccurate, non-standard, and unidiomatic English expressions. We promptly reported this situation to the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press. The International Publishing Division reported it to the representative of Brill Academic Publishers in China. The representative had to report it back to the publisher in the Netherlands, which then forwarded it to the person responsible for English editing. We really had no confidence in how effectively this problem could be resolved through such a chain.

The second issue of the English-language edition was published in 2016, changing from a comprehensive collection of essays to a thematic collection, which centrally included 14 academic papers on China’s agricultural reform and rural transformation. After receiving the sample copy of the second English-language issue, we discovered that the English-language compiler had added a 21-page “Introduction” at the front of the collection, titled “Rethinking China’s Agricultural and Rural Development: Western and Chinese Perspectives.” The addition of an “Introduction” written by the English-language compiler to our carefully selected collection was not included in the originally signed publication contract, nor was it communicated to the Chinese side in advance, nor had it been reviewed and approved by the Chinese side. We immediately raised the matter through the Social Sciences Academic Press to the representative of Brill Academic Publishers in China, pointing out that it was improper for the English-language publisher to unilaterally add other content to the collection selected by the Chinese side without informing the Chinese side. Brill Academic Publishers expressed respect for the Chinese side’s opinion and stated that in such cases they would in future submit the material in advance to the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press and the editorial department of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History* for review and approval. To strengthen control over the political direction, academic orientation, and translation quality of the English-language edition of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History*, we worked with the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press to formulate a specific rectification plan. First, strict selection criteria were proposed for English-language translators to effectively improve the quality of English translation. Second, strict control over the content of the English-language edition was strengthened; English-language compilers and the English-language publisher were not permitted to add content that had not been reviewed. Third, supervision of the publication and printing procedures was strengthened; after compilation, the manuscript required the signatures of the editorial department of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History* and the International Publishing Division of the Social Sciences Academic Press approving “publication” before it could be formally printed and distributed. Although this rectification delayed some subsequent publication time, it provided more appropriate guarantees for ensuring and enhancing the publication quality of the English-language edition of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History*.

In 2019, the third issue of the English-language edition of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History*, with the theme of the development of contemporary China’s medical and health undertakings, was printed and published. I, together with colleagues in the editorial department, also jointly selected the contents for the fourth issue of the English-language edition, with the theme of contemporary China’s marriage system reform and women’s liberation. At the end of 2019, I completely stepped down from the position of editor-in-chief of *Research on Contemporary Chinese History*, which I had held for 12 years.

*Research on Contemporary Chinese History* is an important platform for conducting international academic exchange and enhancing international communication capacity. To fulfill this duty and mission and to build a world-class academic journal, there is still a long way to go. On the basis of adhering to the correct political direction and academic orientation, we must earnestly sum up experience, continuously explore and innovate, and broadly unite scholars of contemporary Chinese history from both domestic and international circles, in order to make more active contributions to enhancing the international communication capacity and international influence of research on contemporary Chinese history, and to explaining the Chinese path, summarizing Chinese experience, telling the Chinese story well, and spreading the Chinese voice well. I wish to dedicate this article to the late Professor Ezra Vogel and Academician Mikhail Titarenko, who gave great support and made important contributions to *Research on Contemporary Chinese History*!
