A Re-examination of the Labour Theory of Value in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
With the rapid development and widespread application of artificial intelligence technology, humanity has already entered the age of artificial intelligence. The arrival of the age of artificial intelligence has both propelled an overall leap in China’s productive forces and promoted profound changes in people’s ways of life. The acceleration of “machines replacing humans” and the expansion of “unmanned factories” have raised some new questions for Marx’s labour theory of value, such as: How does the age of artificial intelligence reshape labour? Does Marx’s labour theory of value still possess applicability in the age of artificial intelligence? How should Marx’s labour theory of value be put into practice in the age of artificial intelligence? Grounding ourselves in the fundamental positions of Marxism and actively responding to the theoretical and practical questions posed to Marx’s labour theory of value by the age of artificial intelligence is of great significance for upholding and developing Marx’s labour theory of value in the New Era.
I. The Reshaping of Labour and the Transformation of Value in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Historically, human society has successively experienced three scientific and technological revolutions, and each scientific and technological revolution greatly promoted the transformation and development of the economy and society. Artificial intelligence, as “a strategic technology leading this round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation,”[1]1 The Chinese text cites a source as “[1](P119)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P119) is increasingly integrated into all fields and the entire process of the economy and society, promoting changes, transformations, and upgrades in the modes of production and life, and pushing the world gradually from the post-industrial era into the age of artificial intelligence. Technological progress has brought about profound changes in the mode of labour, enabling new developments in the mode of value creation and the form of its realisation.
First, the age of artificial intelligence promotes the reshaping of labour. Artificial intelligence technology endows machines with “human-like” intelligence, and its effect on replacing human brainpower is even more pronounced. On the one hand, some “exclusively human posts” for information collection, transmission, simple processing, and feedback, such as telephone customer service, information retrieval, and cashier bookkeeping, are gradually being replaced by machines. On the other hand, artificial intelligence technology has created a batch of new occupations, such as AI trainers, and at the same time has given rise to a mode of labour combining humans and intelligent machines, bringing about epoch-making changes in the labour model.
First, the relationship between living labour and objectified labour becomes more complex. In the era of machine-based large-scale industry in which Marx lived, the distinction between living labour and objectified labour was clear, that is, there was a clear boundary between the consumption of the worker’s mental and physical energy and the consumption of the means of production. Workers, through their own mental and physical labour, used instruments of labour to process raw materials into labour products with use value, forming a complete production process. After the production process ended, living labour existed in a special form, namely objectified labour, in which part of the labour product was consumed as means of subsistence to replenish the worker’s mental and physical energy, while another part was preserved in the form of tools and materials to participate in the next labour process. Marx pointed out: “The product of labour is labour fixed in an object, it is the objectification of labour.”[2]2 The Chinese text cites Marx as “[2](P156-157)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P156-157) The emergence of machines reduced the degree of dependence of production on living labour, increased the “labour-saving” effect, and created a certain “overlap” in the functions of living labour and objectified labour. The emergence of artificial intelligence has formed an automated production system dominated by intelligent machines. In application scenarios of artificial intelligence such as “smart workshops,” “security monitoring robots,” and “self-service cashier machines,” autonomous operation can be achieved almost without the participation of workers. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, artificial intelligence is showing a trend of gradually transitioning from weak AI to strong AI and from specialised AI to general AI, enabling it to undertake richer and more efficient work tasks, causing profound changes in the relationship between living labour and objectified labour, with the proportion of objectified labour in the two becoming increasingly larger.
Second, data and new forms of digital labour have emerged. In the age of artificial intelligence, the emergence of the digital economy form, empowered by artificial intelligence technology, marks digital labour as a new form of labour. Digital labour refers to the process in which digital workers use labour tools such as mobile phone terminals, tablets, and computers to process and handle raw data, producing digital products and services with use value. As a new labour form formed in the age of artificial intelligence, the emergence of the new form of digital labour conforms to the inevitable trend of the development of human society. In this context, data, as an important factor of production, is a variety of information obtained by digital workers after collecting, organising, and analysing raw data. Production units use this to significantly reduce costs, improve production efficiency, and enhance the scientific nature of decision-making. In the production mode of data factorisation and technological digitalisation, the object of labour is no longer a tangible physical carrier but highly abstracted data information. The generation, collection, and organisation of data provide raw materials for artificial intelligence’s computation, analysis, decision-making, and self-learning, ultimately realising the “automatic” decision-making of machines, constituting the operational logic of digital labour. A large number of workers have left traditional industries, and in the upstream of production, they transform concrete product performance into digitalised operating procedures through forms such as research and development and programming. Labour products are gradually shifting from material forms to non-material forms, with virtual goods and virtual services increasingly becoming new labour products. These non-material labour products can not only be transmitted and shared more efficiently but are also easily digitalised and automated.
Third, the extension of labour time and space. Artificial intelligence technology has a certain impact on the temporal and spatial conditions of labour. From the perspective of labour time, on the one hand, artificial intelligence causes an extension of labour time. As early as the era of machine-based large-scale industry, Marx discovered that machines even became “the most powerful means of lengthening the working day beyond all natural limits.”[3]3 The Chinese text cites Marx as “[3](P463)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P463) At the present stage, artificial intelligence has penetrated all aspects of human work and life. Its continuous 24-hour usability allows workers to flexibly use more fragmented time, blurring the boundary between workers’ working time and leisure time. Although artificial intelligence has greatly improved production efficiency, modern workers have not enjoyed leisure; on the contrary, labour time is continuously extended. On the other hand, artificial intelligence extends the total duration of labour. The design purpose of artificial intelligence is to serve production practice. Only the entire process of artificial intelligence from algorithm writing and model creation to its application in practice can be called a complete labour process, which is equivalent to adding the labour link of designing and training artificial intelligence models to the original production process. Since artificial intelligence can replace some specific functions of living labour, a large amount of living labour is transferred to the upstream of production, that is, to links such as data preparation, model building, model evaluation, and behaviour training for artificial intelligence products. Therefore, the increase in total labour time creates a large time interval between the transfer of living labour and the output of products, resulting in a delayed effect of living labour, which easily creates the illusion that living labour does not participate in production labour. From the perspective of labour space, labour space is continuously extended. The value-creation environment for more workers has shifted from factory assembly lines to offices, and workers can also use virtual reality technology to work in a new spatial dimension. The extension of labour space has realised the transformation from workers being present to “unmanned labour,” which can also create the illusion that no workers are needed to participate in labour.
Second, the age of artificial intelligence promotes the transformation of value. The significant substitution effect[4]4 The Chinese text cites a source as “[4]”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given. that artificial intelligence machines exhibit on human labour brings about enormous changes in the realisation of value. Artificial intelligence prompts a further increase in the organic composition of capital, a further reduction in the value of individual commodities, and a transformation in the mode of value realisation.
First, the organic composition of capital rises. The technical composition determines the value composition, and the value composition reflects the technical composition. Marx collectively referred to the two concepts of value composition and technical composition and their interactive relationship as the organic composition of capital. As productive forces improve and production technology continuously advances, the means of production used per unit of labor increase, causing the value of constant capital to rise relatively and the value of variable capital to fall relatively, thereby raising the organic composition of capital. A rise in the organic composition of capital means that the variable capital used to pay workers’ wages will continuously shrink, workers’ income levels will decline, and some workers, such as industrial workers, will face the crisis of competing with artificial intelligence for jobs, forming a large industrial reserve army, placing workers in a more disadvantageous position.
Second, the unit value of commodities decreases. Although use value and value are the two factors of a commodity, and use value is the material carrier of value, the two do not change entirely in the same direction. As productive forces improve, under the premise that the use value contained in a unit commodity remains basically unchanged, the time required to produce a unit commodity decreases, leading to a decline in the value contained in a unit commodity. The application of artificial intelligence technology significantly enhances labor productivity, shortening the socially necessary labor time required to produce a unit commodity, thereby causing a marked decline in the unit value of commodities. Therefore, in the age of artificial intelligence, use value and value exhibit a reverse movement, revealing the trend under the impetus of science and technology of human labor gradually being replaced by advanced means of production. This has also led some people to question the labor theory of value.
Third, the mode of value realization changes. Marx pointed out regarding the exchange process between commodities and money: “The exchange of commodities makes them relate to each other as values and realize themselves as values.” [3]3 The Chinese text cites Marx as “[3](P463)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P104) Artificial intelligence technology permeates the value realization process of commodities, exerting an important influence on the commodity exchange link. Traditional commodity transactions mainly take place in physical venues such as markets and shops, and commodity exchange must pay material and time costs. Digital platforms, using artificial intelligence technology, can gradually shape “non-present” transaction scenarios and can also precisely match supply and demand through algorithmic recommendations, saving time and energy for both buyers and sellers, shortening the transaction cycle, and making transactions more transparent. In the age of artificial intelligence, productivity has greatly increased, and the popularization of smart payments and digital currencies has gradually freed the form of money from the constraints of material form, making it increasingly abstract and symbolic.
II. Clarifying the Understanding of Marx’s Labor Theory of Value in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
In the age of artificial intelligence, the widespread application of intelligent technology has greatly changed the mode of production, prominently manifested in the replacement of workers by artificial intelligence in multiple production fields. Marx’s labor theory of value faces theoretical and practical challenges. Around the uniqueness of the source of value, the subject status of workers, and the closely related nature of capital, some questioning voices have emerged. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify how to understand and interpret Marx’s labor theory of value in the age of artificial intelligence.
First, clarifying the understanding of the issue of the uniqueness of the source of value. The question of where value comes from is the core issue of Marx’s labor theory of value. Labor is the source of all wealth and the sole source of value. Marx pointed out, “There exists an accumulated labor, which calls this labor capital,” and “Capital, this thing, because it contains auxiliary resources, can increase the productivity of living labor by hundreds or thousands of times.” [5]5 Marx, *Value, Price and Profit* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1964.(P80) Living labor is labor in which the living capacity for labor functions. It is not only the sole source of creating value but also the sole source of creating surplus value. This thesis is the fundamental foothold of Marx’s labor theory of value and the key to unraveling where surplus value comes from. As long as the thesis that living labor is the sole source of value holds, the fact that surplus value is created by the labor of wage workers cannot be obscured.
In the mid-to-late 19th century, living labor mainly referred to the physical labor expended by industrial workers in the process of machine-based large-scale industrial production. However, with the development of productive forces, especially with the continuous application of intelligent technology, voices questioning the labor theory of value have persisted in Western academia. For example, the Italian autonomist school, represented by Boudan, denies the role of material labor, arguing that today’s value creation comes from intelligence, invention, and creative labor. [6]6 Paolo Virno and Michael Hardt, eds., *Radical Thought in Italy: A Potential Politics*, Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1996.(P55) Some scholars also believe that the knowledge theory of value can replace and falsify the labor theory of value. [7]7 See, for example, the works of Daniel Bell and other post-industrial society theorists. The reason for this is that in the age of artificial intelligence, smart factories hardly require workers to participate directly in the production process, creating the illusion of living labor “leaving the scene,” thus leading to the misunderstanding that “living labor is no longer necessary for commodity production and is no longer the sole source of value.”
In fact, Marx always examined the production process from an abstract, holistic perspective, rather than seeking the source of value from some specific form of labor. Marx pointed out, “Labor is a totality, a combination of various kinds of labor,” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980.(P120) and labor cannot be seen as the affair of a single worker; even if it is seen as the affair of the totality of workers, it can only be viewed from the combination of labor independent of each individual worker. “This labor, in its material unity, is subordinate to the machine, to the material unity of fixed capital.” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980.(P120) Marx’s above thesis mainly includes two layers of meaning: first, individual labor cannot be separated from total labor; it should be observed and analyzed as a whole; second, that living labor is the sole source of value is not manifested as living labor’s dominant position in labor. Therefore, when examining the production process in the age of artificial intelligence, one cannot treat the unmanned factory as an isolated existence; instead, multiple processes such as the research and development of artificial intelligence, the assembly and maintenance of factories, and the transportation and sale of products should be included in the scope of investigation. It is precisely in these upstream and downstream links that the consumption of living labor adds value to products. Although artificial intelligence occupies an absolutely dominant position in this process, and living labor is merely auxiliary or even absent, one cannot equate artificial intelligence machines with value. Some scholars believe that the core of this debate lies in whether materialized labor and science and technology can create value on their own, and facts prove that neither materialized labor nor science and technology detached from living labor can create value independently. Therefore, adhering to the monism of living labor as value is necessary. [9]9 See, for example, the works of Chinese Marxist economists such as Wei Xinghua on the labor theory of value. Even if we enter a highly intelligent and automated age of artificial intelligence, production still cannot exclude the participation of the living labor element; on the contrary, the technical content and complexity required of living labor are higher, and the value multiplication effect of complex labor is more pronounced.
Second, clarifying the understanding of the issue of the subject status of workers. Marx pointed out: “Labor is, first of all, a process between man and nature, a process in which man, through his own activity, mediates, regulates, and controls the material exchange between himself and nature.” [3]3 The Chinese text cites Marx as “[3](P463)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P207-208) The prerequisite for labor is the interaction between man and nature; thus, in the labor process, the worker has a subject status. In his labor theory of value, Marx fully affirmed the subject status of workers, emphasized the important role of workers in promoting socio-economic development, and criticized the exploitation of workers by capital and the alienation of workers by machine production under the capitalist mode of production.
Constrained by doubts about living labor being the sole source of value, the status of workers in the labor process appears even more ambiguous. If non-material labor such as knowledge, intelligence, and invention could independently become a source of value, then workers engaged in material labor would find it difficult to establish a foothold. Especially since artificial intelligence, a crystallization of knowledge and intelligence, has a relatively obvious substitution effect on workers. Artificial intelligence technology endows machines with certain “superhuman” intellectual attributes. From AlphaGo defeating Go world champion Lee Sedol to the emergence of ChatGPT, individual humans in specific fields have found it difficult to compete with artificial intelligence. Therefore, whether humans will be replaced by machines in the future and whether workers can still occupy a subject status has sparked widespread social discussion.
Although the scenario in which some laborers are squeezed out of the labor market by artificial intelligence is real, it cannot be inferred from this that artificial intelligence can replace the subject status of laborers. On the one hand, artificial intelligence has not transcended Marx’s theory of the machine system; it remains a “technical existent” of human labor. Marx once discussed machines: “They are the products of human industry, natural material transformed into organs of the human will over nature, or of the human will’s activity in nature.” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980. (P198) [10]10 Marx, Karl. *Grundrisse der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie* (1857–1858). The citation refers to the Chinese edition, *Zhengzhi jingxue pipan dagang* (Renmin Chubanshe, 1995), p. 198. The passage discusses machines as organs of the human will. Viewed from the history of AI’s development, although AI technology has shifted from imitating the physiological structure of the human brain to imitating the learning behavior of the human brain, in the final analysis AI remains “the organ of the human brain created by the human hand,” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980. (P198) an extension of human intelligence in nature. Consequently, objectified AI still cannot be separated from subjectified humanity; it can only become an advanced tool and means for humans to transform nature. On the other hand, AI cannot completely dispense with the human factor; it is itself a product of labor. Marx pointed out, “The simple elements of the labor process are: purposeful activity or labor itself, the object of labor, and the instruments of labor.” [3]3 The Chinese text cites Marx as “[3](P463)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given. (P208) Purposefulness is a necessary attribute of labor. The starting point of labor lies not only in obtaining what is needed to meet the demands of production and exchange, but also in obtaining what is needed to meet the demands of consumption, and even in obtaining what is needed to meet the demands of human development. No matter how advanced AI becomes, it cannot replace human will in creating demand for labor or in helping people achieve their goals through a series of instructions. From this perspective, even if it only provides the purposefulness of labor and the final enjoyment of the fruits of labor, the laborer still plays an irreplaceable subject role in the labor process.
Third, a clarification of the understanding of the attribute of capital. When examining machine production, Marx proposed, “After entering the production process of capital, the instruments of labor undergo various changes in form, and their final form is the machine, or more precisely, the automatic system of machinery.” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980. (P184) Marx believed that the development process of machines is closely linked to the production process of capital; capital causes the means of production to evolve into the form of machinery, gradually advancing in the direction of production automation.
The application of AI represents a higher stage of capital production. Its enormous effect in enhancing production efficiency can continuously enrich society’s material wealth. By partially replacing human labor, machines gradually liberate people from heavy labor, making their lives more prosperous and free. Based on this real-world transformation, techno-accelerationists emphasize using the effects of the digital technology revolution to reconstruct post-capitalism, thereby restructuring the relationship between intelligent algorithms, digital automation technology, and capital, so as to construct a political assemblage of algorithmic automation that transcends capital accumulation and exploitation. [10]10 Marx, Karl. They attempt to use digital technology represented by AI to rescue the various crises of capitalist society. Techno-accelerationists believe that AI technology can accelerate the rate of capital valorization and solve many of society’s development problems, thus regarding AI as a technology that compensates for the negative effects of capital. The above view is clearly biased and must be clarified.
On the one hand, AI strengthens the positive role of capital. With the assistance of AI, high-quality development led by technological innovation gradually takes shape. Intelligent planning can make resource allocation more rational, making the links of production, distribution, exchange, and consumption smoother and tighter. Moreover, the leap in productive forces can, to a certain extent, solve many current social problems. From this perspective, the application of AI technology promotes the rapid development of capital and has a positive impact. On the other hand, the negative effects caused by the rapid valorization of capital cannot be ignored. First, AI intensifies the opposition between capital and labor. Marx noted that the mission of machinery in the production process of capital “became a form of capital hostile to labor.” [8]8 Marx, *Grundrisse* (Chinese edition), Beijing: People’s Publishing House, 1980. (P300) The emergence of AI further consolidates the rule of capital, continuously weakening the initiative of laborers in labor, turning them into the “nerve endings” of the intelligent network. No individual laborer is any longer irreplaceable; they can only obtain labor opportunities by reducing their own labor costs. Second, AI intensifies the monopoly of capital. AI technology greatly enhances the competitiveness of enterprises. Dominant enterprises quickly achieve a monopoly position in the market through methods such as “free” and “subsidized” offerings, and consolidate their monopoly position through technological monopoly, data monopoly, platform monopoly, and other means. Third, AI intensifies the exploitation of capital. AI cannot eliminate the exploitative nature of capital; it only makes the act of exploitation more concealed. In the age of AI, due to the temporal and spatial integration of information production and workers’ lives, the exchange of labor power by digital laborers becomes very concealed. [11]11 This refers to the phenomenon where users of digital platforms, through their unpaid activities (e.g., providing data, training algorithms), contribute to value creation for the platform company, a form of exploitation Marx analyzed as the extraction of surplus value from unwaged labor. A large number of platform users exchange their own data in the form of free application experiences, training and refining AI models while using the products. This “non-wage labor” allows platform companies using AI to obtain high profits, becoming an important source for them to extract surplus value.
III. The Practice of Marx’s Labor Theory of Value in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
As discussed above, the rapid development of AI technology and its widespread application in the field of production have changed the content and form of social production labor, affecting the process of value production and realization, and posing significant challenges to Marx’s labor theory of value. At the same time, with its powerful labor capacity, AI liberates humans from heavy and tedious mechanical labor, providing impetus and space for humans to engage in other occupations, and bringing new opportunities for upholding and developing Marx’s labor theory of value. Therefore, it is necessary to actively respond to the opportunities and challenges that the age of AI brings to Marx’s labor theory of value, using the method of dialectical materialism and a perspective of historical development.
First, adhere to the monism of living labor as the source of value while keeping pace with the times. The application of AI technology, although making unmanned production possible, still requires laborers to maintain the smooth flow of the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption links of labor products. This also confirms that the emergence of AI has not turned the category of value into a historical concept. It is undeniable that the factors of production currently participating in value creation are undergoing tremendous changes. The important role of non-material forms of factors of production, such as technology and data, in production labor is constantly becoming prominent. [12]12 This refers to the increasing role of non-material factors of production, such as technology and data, in the contemporary economy, which some argue challenges the classical labor theory of value. However, from the perspective of each factor of production, the emergence of every factor of production is inseparable from conscious human labor. Consequently, the claim that AI will replace human living labor collapses of its own accord. Living labor remains the sole source of the value of commodities, and Marx’s labor theory of value remains the scientific guide for the age of AI. On the one hand, the important role of labor must be emphasized. The emergence of AI technology does not mean that labor is useless; on the contrary, AI technology promotes the renewal and iteration of labor. High and new technology replaces and eliminates past simple, repetitive, low-tech labor, and creates new demands for complex, high-tech labor. With the help of AI, humans can achieve labor of high difficulty, high technology, and high value content, thereby fundamentally improving labor efficiency and greatly enriching material wealth. On the other hand, the understanding of the concept of living labor must be deepened. The development of productive forces in the age of AI has caused many changes in the forms of living labor, giving rise to new categories of labor such as digital labor. Starting from the current conditions of productive forces, it is necessary to analyze the new phenomena of real economic development and enrich the theoretical connotation of the concept of living labor, thereby enhancing the applicability of Marx’s labor theory of value.
Second, unwaveringly uphold the principal position of laborers. In the various debates on the labor theory of value in the age of artificial intelligence, the core issue is whether AI can replace human labor and where laborers should go. Marx’s labor theory of value points out the principal position of laborers in the production process, embodying a value orientation that is people-centered and seeks liberation for laborers. Adhering to the people-centered value orientation is the key to straightening out the relationship between AI and laborers. Xi Jinping pointed out: “Developing AI will provide important support for China to build a modern economic system and achieve high-quality development, and will provide important guarantees for improving people’s livelihoods.” [1]1 The Chinese text cites a source as “[1](P119)”; the original source reference is not provided in the input, so it is reproduced as given.(P140) The ultimate goal of AI development is not to replace humans, but to better serve humanity. In the New Era, the focus must be placed on meeting the people’s ever-growing needs for a better life. On the one hand, the subjective role of laborers must be brought into play. First, the key role of talent in technological innovation should be highlighted, with efforts focused on cultivating innovative laborers, channeling the labor force into innovative industries, and making laborers an important force driving technological innovation and development. Second, to meet the requirements of the AI era, AI education should be strengthened, forming an integrated intelligent education system from primary school to university, improving people’s ability to learn and master AI, and thereby fundamentally enhancing the comparative advantage of laborers relative to AI. On the other hand, the all-round development of people must be promoted. First, AI technology should be used well, striving to free laborers from heavy work and provide conditions for realizing people’s all-round development. Second, the opportunities brought by the AI era should be seized, with attention paid to and measures taken to promote the development of laborers, such as expanding the “occupational map” of the New Era and encouraging laborers to choose careers with development prospects, so as to reconstruct laborers’ production and lifestyle with the goal of people’s all-round development.
Third, dialectically understand the interaction between capital and AI technology. When AI technology is combined with capital, capital becomes the driver of AI technology development, while AI technology becomes the driver of capital expansion; the two drive each other. In a technological innovation model dominated by capital, AI technology has achieved rapid progress and development. However, excessively rapid technological progress, lacking corresponding institutional safeguards, may have negative impacts on human society. Under the dominance of the logic of capital, AI becomes a means to intensify the exploitation of laborers, gain market monopoly status, and maximize capital accumulation, triggering more intense contradictions between capital and laborers. This enlightens and requires us to adhere to the guidance of Marx’s labor theory of value, grasp the dual role of capital in AI technology, curb the disorderly expansion of capital through institutional forms, and ensure the healthy development of AI technology. Specifically, first, China’s basic economic system must be upheld. Regulating the development of capital within the framework of the basic economic system is the fundamental means to curb the disorderly expansion of capital. AI must be made to return to its essence as a tool for improving labor productivity, serving the construction of a high-level socialist market economy system and the improvement of people’s living standards, and finding the correct positioning of AI. Second, fair distribution must be ensured. The use of AI must be prevented from widening the gap between rich and poor, balancing income levels among different laborers, and promoting labor equality through fair treatment. The income distribution system must be deepened, the proportion of labor remuneration in primary distribution increased, the minimum income standard gradually raised, and efforts made to narrow income gaps between urban and rural areas, regions, and industries, so as to promote fair labor treatment. Third, the regulatory mechanism must be improved. Strict anti-monopoly measures must be taken to break the monopoly position of large AI enterprises. The legal norms for the classified protection of data information must be accelerated and improved, a policy and regulatory system adapted to the characteristics of digital platforms must be constructed, equal emphasis must be placed on encouraging technological innovation and promoting technology for good, and unfair competition practices such as algorithm abuse must be regulated according to law, effectively safeguarding consumers’ rights and interests in market transactions. (Huang He, a doctoral student at the School of Marxism, Wuhan University, also made important contributions to this article.)
