Firmly Upholding the Soul and Root of Adapting Marxism to the Chinese Context and the Needs of the Times

General Secretary Xi Jinping has emphasized that the very proposition of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times determines that we must never discard the soul of Marxism, nor must we discard the root of fine traditional Chinese culture. Firmly upholding this soul and root is the foundation and prerequisite for theoretical innovation. Deeply contemplating the rich connotations and practical requirements of firmly upholding the soul and root of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times is of great significance for strengthening historical confidence and cultural confidence, for making the past serve the present and weeding through the old to bring forth the new, for continuously deepening the understanding of the laws governing the Party’s theoretical innovation, and for achieving more fruitful theoretical innovation achievements on the new journey of the New Era.

The soul guides the direction; the pulse concerns life. Having the guidance of Marxist scientific theory is the Party’s distinctive political character and powerful political advantage. In his speech at the ceremony marking the centenary of the CPC, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized: “Why the CPC was capable, why socialism with Chinese characteristics worked; ultimately, it was because Marxism worked!” [1]1 Xi Jinping, “Speech at a Ceremony Marking the Centenary of the Communist Party of China,” July 1, 2021. We must never discard the soul of Marxism, because behind this soul pulses a rich store of scientificity, people-centeredness, practicality, developmental character, and openness. This soul is the fundamental guiding ideology for our Party to build the Party and the country, and to rejuvenate the Party and the country. It is the indispensable “spiritual calcium” and the ever-strengthening “ideological gene” of the CPC on the new journey.

The soul of Marxism is a scientific truth with powerful vitality. The mighty truth-force of Marxism, originating in 19th-century Europe, has traversed time and space, profoundly changed the world, and greatly promoted the development of human society. The fundamental reason for Marxism’s far-reaching influence lies in its creation of historical materialism and the theory of surplus value, which, through profound theoretical work, creatively revealed the general laws of the development of human society and the specific laws of the operation of capitalism, pointed the way for humanity to leap from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom, and showed the people the path to achieving freedom and liberation. Practicality is the fundamental reason why the soul of Marxism can serve as a guiding ideology for the people to transform the world, and it is through its own practical process that the soul of Marxism continuously endows itself with an influence that transcends national boundaries and eras.

The soul of Marxism is the fundamental guiding ideology for our Party to build the Party and the country, and to rejuvenate the Party and the country. Having the guidance of Marxist scientific theory is the Party’s distinctive political character and powerful political advantage. From the day of its founding, the CPC has clearly engraved Marxism on its soul and its banner, never wavering in its firm belief in Marxism, and continuously advancing the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times. “A doctrine is like a flag; once the flag is raised, people have something to look to and know where to go.” [3]3 A saying attributed to the early Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong, expressing the importance of a clear guiding doctrine. The soul of Marxism is the action guide that runs through the Two Integrations. As it continuously develops and enriches through successful practice in China, it becomes closely linked with the fate of the CPC, the fate of the Chinese people, and the fate of the Chinese nation, providing a powerful spiritual driving force for us to understand and transform the world.

Since the New Era, the great achievements of socialism with Chinese characteristics have already proven the significance of firmly upholding the soul of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times. Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era has made original contributions to enriching and developing the soul of Marxism, made historic contributions to activating the root of fine traditional Chinese culture, and made world contributions to advancing the cause of human civilization and progress. The openness and contemporaneity of the soul of Marxism enable it to always stand at the forefront of the times, exploring new issues raised by the development of the times and responding to new challenges faced by human society. Only by adhering to Marxism as the soul can theoretical creation continuously achieve breakthroughs and can the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times be continuously advanced.

坚守好中华优秀传统文化根脉

The report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC emphasizes: “Only by taking root in the fertile soil of the country’s and the nation’s history and culture can the tree of Marxist truth grow deep and flourish.” [5]5 Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, October 2022. Fine traditional Chinese culture is the fundamental prerequisite for advancing the adaptation of Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times. Its root is the “treasure house of civilization” of the Chinese nation, and it is also the very foundation that enables the Chinese nation to always stand firm amidst the global clash of cultures, to promote the localization of foreign cultures, and to continuously cultivate and create socialist culture with Chinese characteristics for the New Era. The root of fine traditional Chinese culture contains many important elements that together shape the prominent characteristics of Chinese civilization.

党的二十大报告强调：“只有植根本国、本民族历史文化沃土，马克思主义真理之树才能根深叶茂。”中华优秀传统文化是推进马克思主义中国化时代化的根本前提，其根脉是中华民族的“文明宝库”，更是中华民族始终能够在世界文化激荡中站稳脚跟，促进外来文化本土化，不断培育和创造新时代中国特色社会主义文化的根基所在。中华优秀传统文化之根脉有很多重要元素，共同塑造出中华文明的突出特性。

Chinese culture is unique and magnificent in the long river of human culture and the global cultural landscape. Behind it is passed down the spiritual gene of the nation and the country, and it fundamentally determines that the Chinese nation must take its own path. 根脉之根，在乎连续。习近平总书记指出：“中国是有着悠久文明的国家。在世界几大古代文明中，中华文明是没有中断、延续发展至今的文明，已经有5000多年历史了。”中华文化在人类文化长河与世界文化版图中独树一帜、蔚为大观，背后传承着国家和民族的精神基因，更从根本上决定了中华民族必然走自己的路，决不能抛弃，“如果不从源远流长的历史连续性来认识中国，就不可能理解古代中国，也不可能理解现代中国，更不可能理解未来的中国”。

The root of the root lies in innovation. If one can make things new day by day, let it be done every day, and again every day. From thought to artifacts, from art to science and technology, the root of fine traditional Chinese culture, created and cultivated by the Chinese people themselves, still shines brightly in the long river of history. Only by firmly upholding the innovative root of fine traditional Chinese culture can we continuously achieve development through inheritance and innovation, be elevated by adapting to the times and responding to changes, and align with the deepest spiritual pursuits of the Chinese people.

根脉之根，在乎创新。苟日新，日日新，又日新。“中华文明的创新性，从根本上决定了中华民族守正不守旧、尊古不复古的进取精神，决定了中华民族不惧新挑战、勇于接受新事物的无畏品格。”从思想到器物，从艺术到科技，由中国人民自身创造和培育的中华优秀传统文化根脉至今仍在历史的长河中熠熠生辉。唯有坚守中华优秀传统文化之创新根脉，才能够不断在继承创新中获得发展，在应时处变中得到升华，契合中国人民最深沉的精神追求。

The root of the root lies in unity. The history of China is also a history of the integration and convergence of various ethnic groups into a pluralistic and unified Chinese nation. The unity of Chinese civilization fundamentally determines that the cultures of all ethnic groups in the Chinese nation are integrated into one, and that even when encountering major setbacks, they are firmly cohesive; it determines the common belief that the territory cannot be divided, the country cannot be thrown into chaos, the nation cannot be dispersed, and the civilization cannot be broken; it determines that national unity will forever be the core of China’s core interests; and it determines that a strong and unified country is the destiny of all ethnic groups. Behind the root of unity lies a long historical tradition of pluralistic unity, solidarity, and concentration, and a common ideal and belief. It must never be discarded.

根脉之根，在乎统一。一部中国史也是由各民族交融汇聚为多元一体中华民族的历史。中华文明的统一性，从根本上决定了中华民族各民族文化融为一体、即使遭遇重大挫折也牢固凝聚，决定了国土不可分、国家不可乱、民族不可散、文明不可断的共同信念，决定了国家统一永远是中国核心利益的核心，决定了一个坚强统一的国家是各族人民的命运所系。统一之根脉背后是多元一体、团结集中的悠久历史传统、共同理想信念，决不能抛弃。

The root of the root lies in inclusiveness. The fundamental reason why Chinese civilization has been able to continue uninterrupted to the present day lies in the prominent inclusiveness within the root of fine traditional Chinese culture. In dealing with foreign civilizations, Chinese civilization treats neighbors as friends, engages in exchange and mutual learning, and, over the long course of historical evolution, selects what is good and absorbs it comprehensively. “Chinese civilization is a civilization born on Chinese soil, and it is also a civilization formed through continuous exchange and mutual learning with other civilizations.” [10]10 Xi Jinping, “Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations,” May 15, 2019. The inclusive characteristic within the root of Chinese culture is not only the reason why it has been able to continue to this day and continuously radiate new vitality, but also an important ideological foundation for promoting the progress of all human civilization and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

根脉之根，在乎包容。中华文明之所以能够成为延续至今从未中断的文明，其根本在于中华优秀传统文化根脉中突出的包容性，对待外来文明，中华文明以邻为友，交流互鉴，在长期的历史演进中择善而从、兼收并蓄。“中华文明是在中国大地上产生的文明，也是同其他文明不断交流互鉴而形成的文明。”中华文化根脉中的包容特性不仅是自身得以赓续至今，并不断焕发簇新生命力的原因所在，更是推动全人类文明进步，构建人类命运共同体的重要思想根基。

The root of the root lineage lies in peace. “The great Way does not walk alone; all under Heaven are one family” is an important component of the concept of tianxia in fine traditional Chinese culture, and it is also the source of the fact that China has no history of colonizing or invading other countries and still adheres to the path of peaceful development today. From “great harmony under Heaven” and “harmonizing all nations” to promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and a new type of international relations centered on win-win cooperation, history and practice constantly prove that the root lineage of peace in fine traditional Chinese culture fundamentally determines that China was, is, and will always be a builder of peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order; it determines that China constantly pursues exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations without engaging in cultural hegemony; it determines that China will not impose its own values and political system on others; and it determines that China insists on cooperation, not confrontation, and will never engage in the small circle of “attacking those who disagree.”

根脉之根，在乎和平。“大道不孤，天下一家”是中华优秀传统文化中天下观的重要内容，也是中国历史上没有留下殖民和侵略他国的历史、今天仍然坚持走和平发展道路的根源。从“天下大同”“协和万邦”到推动构建人类命运共同体、以合作共赢为核心的新型国际关系等，历史和实践都在不断证明，中华优秀传统文化之和平的根脉从根本上决定了中国过去是，现在是，也将始终是和平的建设者、全球发展的贡献者、国际秩序的维护者，决定了中国不断追求文明交流互鉴而不搞文化霸权，决定了中国不会把自己的价值观念与政治体制强加于人，决定了中国坚持合作、不搞对抗，决不搞“党同伐异”的小圈子。

“Developing socialism with Chinese characteristics on the deep foundation of over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization” is the regular understanding we have gained in exploring the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and it is the greatest magic weapon for our success. Theoretical innovation must speak new words, but it cannot discard the ancestors; forgetting one’s ancestors is equivalent to cutting off the soul vein and root vein, and will ultimately commit the subversive error of losing the soul vein and root vein.

“在五千多年中华文明深厚基础上开辟和发展中国特色社会主义”，这是我们在探索中国特色社会主义道路中得出的规律性认识，是我们取得成功的最大法宝。理论创新必须讲新话，但不能丢了老祖宗，数典忘祖就等于割断了魂脉和根脉，最终会犯失去魂脉和根脉的颠覆性错误。

The essence of Marxist thought and the purport of fine traditional Chinese culture coincide implicitly, and from the very beginning of their emergence they have possessed many points of convergence in standpoint and viewpoint. The historical practice of China’s revolution, construction, reform, and development has already proven that the essence of Marxist thought must be integrated with the essence of fine traditional Chinese culture, so that the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics can be passed down from generation to generation, guarded from age to age, and on the basis of continuing the spiritual bloodline of the nation and the state, realize the integration of the soul vein and root vein to keep pace with the times and bring forth the new through the old, grasp the initiative in thought and culture, and achieve innovation in the path, theory, and system facing the future.

马克思主义思想精髓与中华优秀传统文化旨趣暗合，自诞生之初便在立场、观点上拥有诸多契合之处。中国革命、建设、改革、发展的历史实践已然证明，必须把马克思主义思想精髓同中华优秀传统文化精华贯通起来，才能使中国特色社会主义伟大事业薪火相传、代代守护，并在赓续国家和民族的精神血脉的基础上实现魂脉与根脉结合的与时俱进、推陈出新，掌握思想和文化的主动，实现面向未来道路、理论、制度的创新。

Continuously advance the Party’s theoretical innovation and development through the integration and interpenetration of the soul and the root. Looking back on the Party’s more than one hundred years of struggle history, the fundamental reason why our Party has been able to achieve major accomplishments in various historical periods of revolution, construction, and reform, and to lead the people to complete arduous tasks that other Chinese political forces could not accomplish, lies in possessing the scientific theory of Marxism and continuously combining it with new practice to advance theoretical innovation. History has already proven that firmly guarding our soul and root is the foundation and prerequisite for theoretical innovation; facing the future, further exploration of the process of integrating and interpenetrating the soul vein and root vein is the prerequisite and key to whether theoretical innovation and development can continue to deepen. To truly transform the integration of the soul vein and root vein into new advantages for theoretical innovation, and to achieve more fruitful theoretical innovation achievements on the new journey of the New Era, we must insist on rooting ourselves in the historical and cultural soil of our own country and nation, develop Marxism, insist on injecting the core concepts, great spirit, and rich wisdom of the Chinese nation into Marxism at a deeper level, and on the basis of enriching the cultural life of Marxism, provide rich historical and cultural nourishment for adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, continuously advance the Party’s theoretical innovation and development through the integration and interpenetration of the soul and the root, and constantly write new chapters in adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times.

Promote the construction of China’s independent knowledge system through the integration and interpenetration of the soul and the root. In 2022, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out during his inspection of Renmin University of China, “Accelerating the construction of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics is, in the final analysis, constructing China’s independent knowledge system.” [11]11 Xi Jinping’s remark during his inspection of Renmin University of China on April 25, 2022, emphasizing the need to construct an independent knowledge system for Chinese philosophy and social sciences. Essentially, the process of constructing China’s independent knowledge system is the process of adhering to the guidance of the Marxist soul vein to comprehensively excavate the treasure trove of over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, using Marxism to activate the vital excellent factors in fine traditional Chinese culture and endowing them with new contemporary connotations; it is the process of continuously integrating the soul vein of truth into the local root vein. Only by taking the integration and interpenetration of the soul of Marxism and the root of fine traditional Chinese culture as the fundamental prerequisite can we truly take China as the reference and the times as the reference, both base ourselves on China’s reality to solve China’s problems, continuously promote the creative transformation and innovative development of fine traditional Chinese culture, and also face the world and the future, under the illumination of the light of Marxist truth, successively open the door to the transformation of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation, and construct China’s independent knowledge system.

Promote the construction of the modern civilization of the Chinese nation through the integration and interpenetration of the soul and the root. The integration and interpenetration of the soul vein and root vein recreates an organically unified new cultural life entity, making Marxism Chinese, making fine traditional Chinese culture modern, and making the new culture formed through “integration” the cultural form of Chinese-path modernization. The process of integrating and interpenetrating the soul vein and root vein is also the process by which Chinese-path modernization endows Chinese civilization with modern power, and Chinese civilization endows Chinese-path modernization with profound heritage. The integration of the essence of Marxist thought with the essence of fine traditional Chinese culture establishes the basic spiritual coordinates for constructing the modern civilization of the Chinese nation, and is the guiding star for the Chinese nation to gain the spiritual initiative to build modern civilization in the New Era. Viewing Chinese civilization from the new journey of the New Era, only by firmly guarding the soul and root of Marxism adapted to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, and promoting the construction of the modern civilization of the Chinese nation through the integration and interpenetration of the soul and the root, can we gather the profound cultural and civilizational heritage for Chinese-path modernization.
